Several Manchester United players are holding off on their decisions regarding their future with the club, amid growing doubts over manager Erik ten Hag’s future.

This uncertainty follows a series of underwhelming performances that have left the team struggling in the Premier League.

A report from the Manchester Evening News suggests a pervasive sense of uncertainty at Man United, with key players reluctant to commit to new contracts as they anticipate potential managerial changes.

Ten Hag, who took the helm at United two years ago, has seen the team win only one of their last seven Premier League matches, causing them to fall to seventh in the standings, 13 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

This tumultuous period coincides with significant corporate developments at the club, including an investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Despite Ratcliffe’s involvement and the evaluation of potential managerial replacements by the INEOS Group, public assurances of Ten Hag’s job security for the next season have not been forthcoming.

The precarious position of United is highlighted by the fact that they currently trail the points tally of David Moyes’ tenure in the 2013-14 season — which was their worst in the Premier League era — by four points.

In addition to the managerial woes, player discipline and team dynamics have also surfaced as issues.

Alejandro Garnacho, for example, faced potential disciplinary action after expressing dissatisfaction on social media about being substituted in the last game against Bournemouth.

Such incidents have intensified the scrutiny of Ten Hag’s management style, particularly his approach to player management and tactical decisions during games.

As the season progresses, the future of several senior players remains in limbo, with contracts set to expire and no clear direction from the club’s leadership.

Manchester United are reportedly examining the credentials of Bologna’s manager Thiago Motta, amid uncertainty about current manager Erik ten Hag’s future at the club.

While Ten Hag’s departure is not confirmed, the quest for potential replacements has begun, highlighting Motta as a key contender.

Thiago Motta has led Bologna to a commendable fourth position in Serie A, earning accolades for his team’s dynamic style of play.

According to sources close to CaughtOffside, other prominent names are also on United’s radar, including Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte, both of whom are expected to be available this coming summer.

Additionally, Roberto de Zerbi of Brighton is being considered, though securing him might prove challenging due to likely interest from top clubs like Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

The search for a new manager isn’t new for the Red Devils, who had previously considered Julen Lopetegui, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager.

Although initial discussions were held, Lopetegui is no longer viewed as a leading candidate for the position.

United are moving towards a more structured footballing philosophy under the new ownership of INEOS.

The appointment of Omar Berrada as CEO, alongside potential appointments of Jason Wilcox as Technical Director and Dan Ashworth as Director of Football, signal Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s intent to overhaul the club’s structure from the top down.

This shift suggests a clear preference for a coach who focuses solely on pitch performances, leaving transfer dealings to the recruitment department.

In this context, Thiago Motta emerges as a fitting candidate.

His tactical style deemed innovative and modern, promises to inject fresh ideas into the Premier League.

Motta could be the visionary leader to spearhead the rebuild at United, aligning with the new owners’ vision for a definitive style of play.

Manchester United have reportedly offered FC Barcelona €90 million for Frenkie de Jong.

According to El Nacional, once considered indispensable, De Jong is now amongst those who could depart, marking a pivotal moment for the Catalan giants.

This move is said to be a part of Barcelona’s broader strategy, under Deco’s leadership, to alleviate financial pressures by offloading high earners before embarking on new signings.

United aim to re-enter the race for De Jong, a player Ten Hag previously managed at Ajax. Their collaboration led to an impressive Champions League semi-final run, a memory Ten Hag seeks to replicate at Old Trafford.

This potential acquisition aligns with United’s strategy to strengthen their squad, leveraging Ten Hag’s familiarity with De Jong’s capabilities.

The sale of De Jong could significantly impact Barcelona, not only financially by the substantial 90 million euros but also tactically, as it would mean losing a player deeply ingrained in the club’s philosophy.

However, it presents an opportunity for Barcelona to rejuvenate and financially stabilize, allowing for strategic acquisitions in the upcoming season.

Other clubs, notably Bayern Munich, have also shown interest in the 26 year old.

Despite previous denials from De Jong regarding a move, the evolving dynamics at both Barcelona and potential suitors keep the door open for a summer transfer.

As the season progresses, Laporta must weigh the immediate financial relief against the long-term strategic implications of De Jong’s departure.

With United’s offer on the table and the summer transfer window approaching, Barcelona’s decision will be closely watched, marking a potentially transformative period for the club.

The post Manchester United at risk of European exclusion due to ownership clash with Nice appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Manchester United may be barred from European competitions next season, as UEFA enforces its regulations on multi-club ownership.

This predicament arises from the ownership link between United and French club Nice, both under the INEOS group owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

UEFA’s newly published regulations on multi-club ownership clarify that while clubs under the same ownership can participate in different European competitions, they are prohibited from competing in the same tournament.

This rule puts Man United’s European aspirations in a precarious position, especially given Nice’s potential qualification for the same competition.

The crux of the issue lies in Nice’s performance in France’s Ligue 1.

The club’s recent decline has seen them fall out of Champions League qualification spots and into contention for the Europa League, the same competition  United is likely to enter based on their current Premier League standing.

Sir Jim, who has a controlling stake in Nice and a significant share in United, previously believed UEFA’s rules would not hinder United’s European participation.

However, UEFA has confirmed the strict enforcement of its multi-club ownership rules, leading to potential complications for United.

United’s route to European football next season is laden with variables.

Nice’s league position could directly impact their Europa League qualification. If both teams are set to qualify for the Europa League, Nice would take precedence due to their higher domestic ranking.

A victory in the FA Cup could provide United with an alternate path to European football, possibly relegating Nice to the Conference League.

The situation is further complicated by the changes UEFA is implementing in the structure of European competitions next season. The traditional group stages will be replaced by a league format, making the implications of these ownership rules even more significant.

United’s fate could also be influenced by the domestic cup winners across Europe, which could shuffle the allocation of European spots.

In a scenario where both Manchester United and Nice finish in the same position domestically and qualify for the same European competition, United would have the upper hand due to England’s superior ranking in UEFA’s access list.

Nonetheless, there exists a real risk that both clubs could be relegated to the Conference League, with Nice potentially taking the sole spot, leaving United out of European football entirely.

Manchester United’s preparations for their FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool have taken a hit as their second-choice goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, is set to be sidelined due to a muscle strain.

The 25-year-old Turkey international is expected to be out of action for around two weeks.

This timeline forces him to miss the crucial encounter at Old Trafford this Sunday.

Bayindir, who made his debut for United in a 4-2 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Newport County in January, has been a reliable backup for the team.

His injury comes at a critical time as United face a challenging fixture list, including the upcoming FA Cup match against arch-rivals Liverpool.

The goalkeeper had also been called up by Turkey for their upcoming friendlies against Hungary and Austria but will now have to withdraw from the national squad.

With Bayindir sidelined, United’s third-choice goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, is now expected to return to the squad.

Heaton has been recovering from an injury but is anticipated to be fit for Sunday’s game.

This development could see him take a spot on the bench, providing cover for United’s first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The injury to Altay Bayindir, along with issues concerning other squad members such as Jonny Evans, has brought the total number of injury or illness cases affecting the team to a staggering fifty this season.

This statistic, highlighted in a tweet by Samuel Luckhurst, underscores the significant challenges United have faced in terms of player availability.

The cumulative effect of these absences has undoubtedly put pressure on the squad’s depth and resilience, impacting team selection and potentially influencing the outcome of their campaigns across various competitions.

Manchester United’s ambitions for a defensive revamp could see them targeting Barcelona’s stalwart Ronald Araújo.

With Barcelona open to negotiations for the right offer, United’s search for a centre back ahead of the summer transfer window could land them one of football’s most promising defenders.

Reports from ESPN reveal Barcelona’s willingness to consider offers of around €100 million for Araújo.

The 25-year-old Uruguayan has proven himself a key figure in Barcelona’s lineup, embodying both skill and versatility in defence.

This potential move comes at a time when United, under the new stewardship of INEOS, aims to make significant changes to their squad, signalling a bold new era for the club.

Araújo’s ability to command the defensive line, coupled with his experience in La Liga and the Champions League, makes him an ideal target for the Red Devils.

His recent performances, notably in Barcelona’s Champions League victory over Napoli, have underscored his importance to his current club.

Yet, Barcelona’s financial predicaments might force them to entertain lucrative offers for their star defender.

Araújo’s potential arrival at Old Trafford could offer United the solidity and leadership they have been missing at the back.

However, United would face competition, as Bayern Munich and a top Premier League club are also interested in Araújo’s services.

United’s interest in bolstering their defence is evident, with the club linked to several top defenders, including Antonio Silva, Jean-Clair Todibo, Goncalo Inacio, and Edmond Tapsoba.

These links highlight the club’s strategic approach to recruitment, aiming to build a squad capable of competing at the highest levels both domestically and in Europe.

Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez is on the brink of completing his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

Despite being called up to the Argentina squad, the defender will not partake in the upcoming international friendlies.

Argentina, reigning world champions, are scheduled to play El Salvador and Costa Rica as they gear up for the Copa America this summer.

According to The Athletic, he is expected to return to action for United against Brentford.

Martinez will complete his recovery phase with the Argentina national team, sidelining him from participation in the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on March 17.

Erik ten Hag will be delighted with the news of  Martinez nearing a return to full fitness, especially considering the Argentine’s pivotal role in United’s defensive setup.

Martinez’s importance to United extends beyond his defensive capabilities; his adeptness at playing out from the back has become a cornerstone of United’s build-up play under Ten Hag.

His ability to initiate attacks from deep positions, coupled with his composure under pressure and precision in passing, makes him an invaluable asset in the Dutchman’s system.

This skill set not only enhances United’s fluidity in transitioning from defence to attack but also underscores Martinez’s crucial role in the team.

His return is a significant uplift to the team’s overall playstyle, embodying Ten Hag’s philosophy of maintaining control and dictating the pace of the game from the back.

In related news, United announced that Mason Mount has resumed training after a calf injury in November.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also back in training, readying for the team’s upcoming clash with Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Manchester United are reportedly considering England manager Gareth Southgate and Brentford head coach Thomas Frank as potential replacements for Erik ten Hag, should he exit Old Trafford.

While no definitive decisions have been made regarding Ten Hag’s future, INEOS, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently acquired a significant stake in the club, is exploring options for potential managerial candidates.

According to ESPN, the search for potential successors is part of a wider strategic review by INEOS, reflecting their desire for preparedness amid a landscape where top clubs, including Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, are also seeking new management.

This development coincides with the club’s anticipation of new executive arrivals and structural reviews, particularly with Sir Dave Brailsford’s oversight of United’s operational strategies.

United’s interest in Southgate stems from his successful tenure with the England national team, despite his lack of recent club management experience.

His connection with prospective United sporting director Dan Ashworth, with whom Southgate has previously collaborated at the Football Association, adds a layer of intrigue to his candidacy.

However, Southgate’s future intentions, particularly post-Euro 2024, remain uncertain, positioning him as a less likely choice.

On the other hand, Thomas Frank’s achievements with Brentford have not gone unnoticed.

His high-energy team approach and data-driven recruitment strategy align with United’s aspirations, making him a compelling candidate.

The club’s situation is further complicated by Ten Hag’s current performance, with United’s recent losses and the looming pressure to qualify for the Champions League casting doubt on his tenure.

Despite the uncertainty, there is a silver lining.

Ten Hag’s commitment to nurturing young talent, such as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, underscores his alignment with United’s youth development tradition.

The potential financial implications of transitioning to a new manager also remain a significant consideration for the club.

United has not officially commented on the situation, reflecting the fluidity and discretion surrounding these deliberations.

Manchester United are reportedly considering Roberto De Zerbi for their managerial position, as questions loom over Erik ten Hag’s future with the club.

The Italian, currently at Brighton, has made a notable impression, positioning himself as a sought-after manager in European football.

According to a report by Telegraph Sport’s Mike McGrath, clubs interested in De Zerbi, including Man United, might face a compensation fee exceeding £12 million to release him from Brighton.

This significant amount stems from his successful tenure at the Amex Stadium and a contract extending until 2026, secured 17 months ago.

The compensation fee for De Zerbi reflects the evolving market dynamics where managerial transfers have started mirroring player transfers in terms of financial dealings.

His strategic approach and tactical expertise have earned him praise and recognition, not least from Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, who believes De Zerbi is destined for greater achievements in top-tier football.

United’s interest comes amid speculation over the current manager, Ten Hag’s, standing, especially as co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has yet to endorse him publicly.

However, with United still active in the FA Cup, definitive decisions regarding Ten Hag’s future remain pending.

De Zerbi’s coaching journey, marked by stints in Italian football and at Shakhtar Donetsk, showcases his adaptability and innovative approach to the game.

Under his guidance, Brighton players have refined their skills, particularly in playing out from the back, a testament to his meticulous and effective coaching methods.

While De Zerbi remains committed to Brighton, having been in discussions for a new contract, the allure of managing a club with the stature and resources of United could prove irresistible.

In a recent BBC interview, Cesc Fabregas expressed uncertainties regarding Manchester United’s tactical approach under manager Erik ten Hag.

Fabregas, a seasoned footballer, contrasted Ten Hag’s strategies with those of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, highlighting a lack of clarity and structure in the current setup.

According to Fabregas, while Solskjær’s tenure at United had a discernible strategy focusing on solid defence and effective counter-attacks, Ten Hag’s game plan remains unclear to the former midfield maestro.

“I don’t know his gameplan, I don’t know if he has structure, I don’t know what his message is. At least with Solskjær, there was a plan – defend well and have great breaks,” said Fabregas during the interview.

Further scrutiny came as Fabregas discussed  United’s recent performance against Fulham, noting significant defensive lapses that allowed multiple counter-attacks.

“Looking carefully at the counters that Fulham did to them and the way they were done, it makes the alarm bells go for a very, very long period of time,” Fabregas elaborated.

He stressed that frequent counter-attacks against a top team Man United indicate a fundamental issue within the team’s tactical framework.

“It cannot happen that a top, top team gets done on the counter so many times in one half, or over 60 minutes. And this shows that they are lacking something,” he added.

The critique from such a highly regarded figure in football adds pressure on Ten Hag to address these concerns and refine his strategy to ensure  United can compete at the highest level consistently.
