Manchester United’s disappointing season has left Erik ten Hag fighting for his position at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman is under huge pressure at the club after an awful league campaign and an embarrassing early exit from Europe.

A raft of names have been linked to replace the 54-year-old, with outgoing Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel a frontrunner for the hot seat.

However, as reported by The Sun, the German coach could soon be served with a touchline ban from European competitions which could potentially harm his chances of arriving at Old Trafford.

The Bayern boss could be charged for his outburst following Bayern’s controversial semi-final exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Bayern had a last-gasp equaliser disallowed by a hasty flag from the lineman which denied Tuchel’s men a chance at extra-time, a decision the former Chelsea boss said “felt like a betrayal”.

Tuchel did not stop his onslaught at the match officials in his post-match conference either, claiming the decision “would not have happened on the other side”.

To question the integrity of the officials will not go down well with UEFA who could now step in and levy a harsh punishment on the 50-year-old.

A decision is likely to be made next week and Tuchel will be hoping the fact the referee and linesman admitted they made an error will go in his favour.

However, Should Tuchel get hit with a touchline ban, it will mean he could miss multiple games from the sidelines next year.

INEOS will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the situation with Tuchel the bookies favourite to take over in the summer.

This being said, United still have a lot of work to do in order to qualify for Europe next season with Ten Hag’s men needing points from three tricky looking league fixtures.

A bad end to the season could be compounded by defeat in the FA Cup final which would surely see the end of Ten Hag’s reign in Manchester.

Tuchel looks the outstanding candidate despite INEOS’ strange flirtation with Gareth Southgate and United fans seem to be in favour of a change in the dugout.

Manchester United’s long list of injuries have caused Erik ten Hag major headaches throughout his difficult second campaign at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has had to deal with a wafer-thin squad for the majority of the season, with his back line in particular hit hard with absentees.

So much so that Brazilian midfielder Casemiro has had to step in at centre-back in recent weeks and the former Real Madrid man has struggled badly as a result.

He put in a disastrous display in the recent 0-4 annihilation at Crystal Palace was his worst game in a United shirt and he simply cannot continue in that position.

Former United skipper Roy Keane has weighed in on the stark decline in Casemiro’s form and insists he shouldn’t have started in the centre of defence against Palace.

Speaking on Gary Neville’s Stick to Football podcast, Keane feels a youth team player should have been chosen over the Brazilian.

“Of all the players at Manchester United, including the reserves and youth team, if there was one player I wouldn’t play at centre-half against Crystal Palace, he’d be the one,” said Keane.

Keane added that he thought Casemiro would be in for a “tough night” given the atmosphere at Selhurst Park and the strong recent form of Oliver Glasner’s side but the five-time Champions League caused his own issues.

“He was isolated by his own fault, because he wasn’t getting people around him, and you have to take responsibility for that,” he said.

Keane did admit that Ten Hag’s tactics didn’t help the 32-year-old on the night with the team desperately lacking in structure for many weeks now.

“But if we’re talking about it being a team game, structure-this and structure-that, playing between the lines.

“That’s all well and good but when you’re up against it, you need your teammates around you. There’s the whole idea of playing in a team,” Keane concluded.

United need points from their three remaining Premier League games if they are to qualify for any of the European competitions next season and also need to find some form before the FA Cup final at the end of the month.

However, the trio of league fixtures look testing for United with Arsenal and Newcastle visiting Old Trafford before a trip to Brighton, which hasn’t been a happy hunting ground in recent years.

If Casemiro is deployed in the central defensive position in those games, he would surely be targeted by the opposition who know the Brazilian’s legs have gone.

It’s difficult to make a case for United winning any of their remaining games with Casemiro at the back and Ten Hag will be desperate for Lisandro Martinez to prove his fitness before the all-important final against Manchester City.

The Argentine is back in training but after being rushed back too quickly already this year, Ten Hag will want to manage his number one centre-back accordingly.

Arsenal visit Old Trafford on Sunday in a huge game for Mikel Arteta’s side who are going punch-for-punch with Manchester City for this year’s title.

It’s also a big game for Ten Hag whose position at the club has come under huge pressure in recent months.

A win against Arteta’s in-form side would be a huge boost for Ten Hag who will know the importance of his players heading into the final with confidence.

Martinez has been a monumental miss for the team this season with the Argentine a key figure both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

The World Cup winner’s ability to play out from the back and start attacks has been sorely missed and getting him up to speed for the showpiece occasion would transform United’s chances on the day.

As for Rashford, his form has been atrocious all season, but he does possess the quality to cause any defence problems, as he showed on multiple occasions last year.

If Rashford can find a burst of quality for the remaining games, he probably does still represent United’s best chance of causing City problems, something he has a good record of doing.

The news of the pair’s return will provide an obvious boost to the squad who will be desperate to salvage something from what has been a wretched season to date.

Furthermore, the final looks like Ten Hag’s only chance to save his job in Manchester and he will be doing all he can to upset the odds at Wembley and regain some faith that has been lost this year.

However, one plus point from the season has been the emergence of young midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo has been a mainstay in the starting XI since his first game of the season at Goodison Park in November, excelling in the middle of the park despite the team’s poor form all around him.

His wonderful breakthrough campaign has not gone unnoticed, with United’s No 37 getting nominated for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award.

The Englishman grabbed his first goal for his boyhood club in the third round of the FA Cup against Newport, following it up with a couple of stunning strikes in the Premier League.

His ridiculous stoppage-time winner in the pulsating 4-3 win against Wolves won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for February, showcasing all of his attributes with a stunning run and finish.

Mainoo then put United ahead in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford, his outstanding curling effort ensured a point and helped put an end to the old enemy’s title hopes in the process.

The academy product also made his bow for England in a friendly against Brazil at Wembley, impressing on the big stage and now looking a certainty for the Three Lions squad for the Euros in the summer.

Alongside his incredible talent with the ball, Mainoo’s temperament is perhaps the most impressive thing about the young man.

At just 19, Mainoo’s composure in possession and unflappable nature under pressure will be key to him starring for United for many years to come.

It’s imperative United now build their midfield around the new star and with a summer of changes expected at the club, tying Mainoo down to a long term contract should be high on the INEOS to-do-list.

Winning the prestigious award would be the icing on the cake after a wonderful breakthrough campaign but the United man does face stiff competition for the gong.

Manchester City pair, Phil Foden and Erling Haaland will be among the favourites with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer also in the running.

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Tottenham Hotspur’s Destiny Udogie and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and William Saliba make up the remaining nominees.

Whatever the outcome, Mainoo has every reason to be delighted with his work this season and will hope to finish it off by lifting the FA Cup at the end of the month.

Spanish media have reported that long standing target for United, Frenkie de Jong would be top on Ten Hag’s wishlist should he move to the Allianz Arena.

The Barcelona midfielder looked set to rejoin his old boss at Old Trafford last season but the deal fell through after lengthy discussions.

Ten Hag was desperate to sign De Jong when he arrived at United but the club’s inability to get their man rather sums up their shoddy approach to the transfer market over the last decade.

Reports say that De Jong would command a €70 million fee with Barca open to the sale to ease the financial pressure the club are currently suffering from.

However, much has to fall into place for the deal to come to fruition with Ten Hag’s position still very much in situ at Old Trafford with the small matter of an FA Cup final on the horizon.

Many feel win or lose at Wembley, Ten Hag’s time at United should be up but the showpiece occasion certainly gives him a great opportunity to register back-to-back trophy successes in his two seasons at the club.

Manchester United women have revealed their Player of the Month for April, with Ella Toone scooping the honour for the third time this season.

As confirmed by the club’s official website, Toone pipped goalkeeper Mary Earps to the award by just three percent of the votes.

Earps’ 41% wasn’t enough to topple Toone, who has enjoyed a trio of excellent performances across the month. Maya Le Tissier finished third in the running with 15% of the votes.

It’s Toone’s fifth triumph overall after being awarded the prize back-to-back in December 2023 and January 2024.

The attacking midfielder scored her 52nd goal for the club against Leicester last weekend, a crucial late strike that proved to be the match winner on the day.

Toone’s clever turn and stunning 25 yard hit fizzed into Janina Leitzig’s top corner and secured the club’s Goal of the Month award in the process.

The strike is also up for the Goal of the Month award in the Women’s Super League, which could lead to further recognition for Ella.

It’s been a special period for United’s number 7 who became the first player to reach the 50 goal mark for the Women’s team when she claimed a brace on the final day of March against Everton.

Furthermore, Toone’s fine cross that allowed Rachel Williams to nod home the killer second in the famous FA Cup semi-final win against Chelsea helped United secure their place in second successive finals in the competition.

United will start as favourites in the showpiece occasion on May 12 against Tottenham, and Toone will no doubt have a key role to play should Mark Skinner’s men lift the trophy for the first time.

Despite a disappointing league campaign overall for the Women’s team, Toone has remained an almost ever-present throughout the season and continues to give her all for the cause.
