Manchester United manager Marc Skinner is hopeful that Geyse will be available for selection this weekend after coming back from illness.

In his press conference ahead of the WSL game against Tottenham Hotspur, Skinner said: “Geyse trained earlier in the week, so I think she had a 24/48-hour [bug].”

However, Jayde Riviere will still be sidelined after getting injured against Brighton at home back in February.

“Jayde is going to be missing for this game, she is still progressing, hopefully coming back towards the end of the season,” Skinner confirmed.

Meanwhile, the manager confirmed that Jess Simpson, Emma Watson and Gabby George, who all suffered ACL injuries at the start of the season, will not return until pre-season.

“It’s such a devastating injury if you get it wrong and I’m not somebody that short changes or cuts corners on the rehab of that. So the players need to recover properly even if that’s longer than they want and they would want to be back.”

Speaking of the injuries his side has suffered this season, Skinner said they had had a big bearing on his team’s progress.

“These are players that will have a huge impact in kind of how we want to play. What I can stress is that we are looking to add players in that will make us better, I have no doubt about that.”

This weekend’s fixture is almost a dress rehearsal for the FA Cup final, where these two sides will meet at Wembley.

“Beating Chelsea – that’s been something we’ve had to get off our back. We had to win it and we had to do it a different way. But there’s another game to go [in the FA Cup], to underestimate Tottenham in a final would be a sin.”

“I always respect every opponent we play. We prepare to go around their strengths, around their weaknesses. I think the difference with Tottenham this year is that, Robert [Vilahamn’]s been able to get a run of those moments where you win a game and all of a sudden you get that confidence and you get into a flow state. I think what you have to do as a coach playing against that is try and disrupt that flow.”

United will host Spurs at Leigh Sports Village at midday on Sunday.

Manchester United star Geyse scored an incredible goal whilst on international duty with Brazil.

Brazil are competing at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup and a 5-0 victory over Panama secured progression to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Geyse opened the scoring in the 4th minute as she struck a sweet half-volley from outside the area which flew past Panama shot-stopper Yenith Bailey.

Her acrobatic celebration showed what it meant to her. She went on to score another later on, latching on to a loose ball in the box, before firing home into an empty net.

Geyse will remain with Brazil as they progress through the competition, which concludes at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on 10 March.

As well as beating Panama, Brazil have also got the better of Colombia and Puerto Rico convincingly enroute to the quarters.

Brazil take on Argentina on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it was elation for Lucia Garcia who won the Nations League with Spain and sealed a place in this summer’s Olympics.

Spain beat Olympic hosts France 2-0 in the final of the competition on Wednesday night.

There were 14 United players on international duty over the weekend.

Both Grace Clinton and Millie Turner made their England debuts as the Lionesses beat Austria and Italy in international friendlies.

Hayley Ladd and Gemma Evans featured for Wales as they beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 with Aoife Mannion an unused substitute.

United women return to action on Sunday as they travel to West Ham in the WSL.

There are 14 Manchester United women players in action for their countries this weekend.

12 senior players have been called up alongside Olivia Francis and Mayzee Davies from the academy, who have been picked to represent Wales.

Five United stars are out in Spain with England’s Lionesses who take on Austria tonight before facing Italy.

Grace Clinton, who is currently thriving on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, is in the side alongside England regulars Ella Toone and Mary Earps.

Also in the side are two United defenders, Maya Le Tissier and Millie Turner, the latter of which is still waiting to get her first cap for England.

Geyse is in Brazil’s squad for the CONCACAF W Gold Cup and is expected to miss some games for United depending on how far Brazil get in the competition.

Lisa Naalsund has been chosen for Norway after excelling at United recently.

They take on Croatia in a double header in the Nations League.

After returning to action briefly in United’s FA Cup tie with Southampton, Aoife Mannion returns to the Republic of Ireland squad.

Lucia Garcia returns to action for Spain as they take on the Netherlands in the semi-final of the Nations League.

A place in the Olympics is also up for grabs for Garcia’s side should they win the tournament.

Safia Middleton-Patel, who has been on loan at Watford since January, is joined by Hayley Ladd and Gemma Evans in the Welsh squad as they take on the Republic of Ireland.

United return to action on March 3rd when they face West Ham away in the Super League.

Manchester United Women travel to London this weekend to face Arsenal at a sold-out Emirates stadium.

The game is anticipated to break attendance records for a league game in this country.

Manager Marc Skinner believes his side have to win to keep their top three dreams alive.

Skinner said: “We’re going to have to energise and we have to try and silence a massive crowd. If not, it could be a long day.

“We have to be the ones that can get under Arsenal’s skin and and make sure that we try and perform to the best of our ability.”

United are unbeaten in the last four games against the Gunners. They drew 2-2 at Leigh Sports Village earlier in the season.

Last time they faced the Gunners at the Emirates, United came from behind in the last ten minutes in emphatic style to beat them 3-2.

Unfortunately this time, Skinner will be without defender Jayde Riviere, who took a knock in the game against Brighton two weeks ago.

However, he did confirm that Geyse would be back in the side and would depart for international duty with Brazil following the final whistle.

Skinner said: “We have her available for this game. Then we’ll obviously reserve the right and judgment on [when she comes back]. Depending on where Brazil are at at that point as well, I think is obviously really important.

“I think it will be the preference probably for her to stay with the national team. I think that is healthy and we’ll have to go on without her for a game after that should we need to.”

United sit four points behind third placed Arsenal heading into the game and ten points behind league leaders Chelsea.

It is the final league game before they break for international duty, with United not returning to action until March 3rd when they again travel to London to face West Ham.

Manchester United Women have beaten Brighton 2-0 at home in the WSL.

The game started an important week of reflection for the whole club.

The Supporters Club flags were replaced with flags paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the Munich Air Disaster and both managers laid a wreath prior to kick off as a rendition of The Flowers of Manchester played.

Brighton brought the game to United in the opening five minutes, they were pressing well and attacking aggressively but United soon found their rhythm.

After a series of corners for the home side, Geyse delivered a lovely cut back into the six yard box which found Nikita Parris, who turned it past former United keeper Sophie Baggaley.

The Seagulls defence were having difficulty with Lucia Garcia, who was a bundle of energy in the first half, constantly pressing high for the ball.

22 minutes in and Brighton got their first corner of the game but it was well dealt with by Millie Turner, who headed it away from danger.

It was a good spell of possession for the visitors and they managed to get their first shot on target which Earps magnificently saved.

United were forced to make an early change as Jayde Riviere who had picked up a knock against Villa last week was injured just before the half hour mark. United were down to ten temporarily as Evans prepared herself.

United came close to doubling their lead just before half-time. Geyse launched another attack down the right and found Ella Toone but her shot was just wide. Brighton could not handle the speed and agility of Geyse.

The game began to get heated in the second half as Geyse found herself on the floor three times in as many minutes under the challenge of Poppy Pattinson. A heated exchange of words ensued between Nikita Parris and Vicky Losada. The fans were getting frustrated, the referee had words but no cards came out.

Moments later, Geyse punished Brighton for their foul play as she darted inside the box and, in what looked like an exact replica of the first goal, she pulled it back to Parris, who was lurking around the six yard mark and she blasted it past Baggaley again.

United came again, this time it was Blundell down the right wing, she delivered it into the box as Leah Galton was arriving but it was just a little too far in front of her.

It was an energetic performance from United. The points keep them in touching distance of the top three and keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Team: Earps, Le Tissier, Blundell, Toone (Guerrero 78), Zelem, Riviere (Evans 33), Naalsund, Garcia (Galton 57), Turner, Parris (Williams 78), Geyse (Malard 78)

Manchester United Women have lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as they fall ten points behind the league leaders in the WSL.

An early corner for Chelsea saw Lauren James come within touching distance of the away fans who made clear their feelings. A wry smile crept across her face as the boos rang out.

Five minutes in and it was James who opened the scoring for the home side. Chelsea were patient in the box, United couldn’t clear their lines, and James tapped it past Mary Earps.

She went running over to celebrate in front of the United fans.

United took a few minutes to wake up and respond but Toone and Galton showed good control on the edge of the box, the former played it into the path of Captain Katie Zelem, whose shot was too high.

23 minutes in and James doubled the score. This time she found her own fans to celebrate with.

United couldn’t get a foothold in this game at all.

Geyse had given the ball away a few times but she found space down the right and got a shot away, forcing Hannah Hampton into a good save.

United were growing into the game 35 minutes in and when Chelsea lost possession cheaply, Garcia managed to shoot but it was a comfortable catch for Hampton.

Their belief paid off. Geyse played it through the legs of a Chelsea defender into the box and cut it back for Garcia, whose shot was blocked. Hayley Ladd was first to the ball though and made no mistake as she smashed it into the back of the net.

United came out in the second half with a lot more energy. A chance for Toone was blocked by Chelsea as she dithered in the box.

The ball came back in to Garcia at the far post, who headed just wide.

United came again but with a number of Red shirts in the box they got in each others way, Toone left it for Ladd, Ladd left it for Toone and Chelsea took Toone out of the equation. Ladd got her shot away but it was well saved by Hampton.

The game was beginning to open up and Earps was forced into a save pushing the ball onto the post.

Toone was getting frustrated after a foul on her went unpunished and then she was flagged as being offside when she appeared to be a mile on. You could almost see the Chelsea shirts poking out from under the officials’ tops!

Though the second half had been dominated by United, one sniff of goal cambe for Lauren James and she found the net again.

Team: Earps, Turner, Blundell (Evans), Riviere, Le Tissier, Zelem, Toone (Williams), Galton, Garcia (Parris), Ladd (Naalsund), Geyse

]]>

Three months in to their competitive careers at Manchester United and the summer signings have so far offered mixed results on the field.

Undoubtedly, the squad as a whole have had a mixed first half of the season, losing pace with the top three, crashing out of the Champions League but topping the Conti Cup group heading into the new year.

The team has also been hit with injuries with a number of our newcomers falling victim to lengthy ailments, mostly picked up in training or on international duty.

However, some of the summer stars have settled in nicely and are proving to be unstoppable on the pitch.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce

The American shot-stopper has played in all three of United’s Conti Cup group games meaning she has a 100% win record at the moment, keeping two clean sheets and conceding just one.

Tullis-Joyce created a memorable moment in United’s 1-0 win over Liverpool when she pulled off a world class save to deny them an equaliser.

Gabby George

Defender Gabby George returned to the side after previously playing for the club at youth level.

She showed promise in her opening few games for United but suffered an ACL injury against Leicester in the League, ending her season. She is recovering well from surgery.

Gemma Evans

The Welsh international brought with her a wealth of experience upon joining the club, having previously made 99 top flight appearances.

As United struggled in defence with the injury to Gabby George, Evans has risen to the challenge and settled in quickly to United’s back line.

Irene Guerrero

Guerrero is another of United’s newcomers to have been plagued with injuries.

However, she deserves praise for her appearances off the pitch as well, throwing herself in to her work with the MU Foundation, which is an important part of the ethos of the club. Sources close to the club have praised the Spanish international, who is said to have thoroughly enjoyed her time working with and meeting some of the children that the foundation benefits.

Hinata Miyazawa

Miyazawa came to United a World Cup Golden Boot winner and though we saw glimpses of her potential as a world class midfielder, she took time to settle in to this team.

She got her first goal for the club shortly before the last international break of the year and looked to have found her form. However, whilst playing in a friendly for Japan she suffered an ankle injury which required surgery.

Emma Watson

Before the season even began, the gifted youngster Emma Watson suffered an ACL injury whilst playing for Scotland.

Melvine Malard

Malard is only on loan, but the club will most definitely be trying to get her to make the move permanent.

She is proving to be United’s best signing so far, scoring the club’s first ever Champions League goal and being United’s top scorer so far this season.

She is really enjoying her time in England, becoming a fan favourite and singing the praises of captain Katie Zelem, who has made her feel at home despite the language barrier.

Geyse

The Brazilian international is one of the most technically gifted footballers to ever play in the women’s game, the way she dances round defenders and finds a way through, it’s like her feet are magic, it’s mesmerizing to watch.

However, after she’s accomplished the hard part, her decisions in front of goal and her finishing need a little work.

She has settled well though and fans can expect big performances from her in the second half of the season.

With the International break over, players are starting to arrive back at Carrington for training ahead of United’s clash with Tottenham at the weekend.

14 United stars took part for their countries over the last week with mixed results.

Hinata Miyazawa took part in two international friendlies against Geyse’s Brazil but there was personal heartbreak for her as she picked up what looked to be a nasty injury.

Meanwhile, Jayde Riviere was part of Canada’s squad who hosted two international friendlies against Australia, with Canada winning both matches.

Wales have had a miserable time in the Nations League and they begun these fixtures with another loss.

Hayley Ladd, Gemma Evans and Safia Middleton-Patel were called up by Gemma Grainger but they found themselves relegated as they were thrashed by Iceland.

There was some hope for the future though as they held group winners Germany to a goalless draw to end their campaign on a positive note.

France and Spain both progressed to the semi-finals of the Nations League and Melvine Malard and Lucia Garcia were in action.

Malard assisted the winning goal as France beat Portugal to secure their progression.

But despite two very entertaining wins for England’s Lionesses, they did not do enough to progress to the semi-finals and their Olympic dreams are now over.

They faced Netherlands in a must win game but fell behind in the first half 2-0, the second goal was a rare mistake from United keeper, Mary Earps.

The European champions managed to turn it around in the second half with United’s Ella Toone getting the winning goal to make it 3-2 to England but they really needed one more goal to go ahead of the Netherlands in the table.

Earps was inconsolable on the pitch as she felt her error had cost the team dearly but they still had a fighting chance of getting to the Olympics.

On the final day they needed to beat Scotland by three more goals than what Netherlands scored against Belgium – it felt impossible.

However, at half-time, England were on top of the group as Netherlands were winning 1-0 and England were winning 4-0 thanks to two former Reds – Greenwood and James as well as the returning Beth Mead.

Both teams were receiving news from the touchline on how the other was doing but Scotland had parked the bus.

England scored a fifth through Fran Kirby, giving England a cushion, but not long after, Netherlands netted a second.

As injury time began, Netherlands scored a third against Belgium and as England boss Sarina Wiegman updated her players, Toone assisted Lucy Bronze, who headed in for the final action of the match.

The team waited anxiously for news that the other game was over but with Netherlands a minute or so behind, Sarina’s home nation must have received word that they needed one more and somehow they got it, breaking English hearts as the final score was 4-0, meaning England’s 6-0 victory was not enough.

It was a dramatic end to the Nations League, showcasing the highs and lows of football.

Now, attention switches back to the domestic league as United quickly regroup for a trip to London to take on Spurs.

Manchester United Women have 14 players who have been called up on international duty this week.

Six of those players could be in action for England’s Lionesses as they take on the Netherlands tomorrow night, followed by Scotland next Tuesday in the Nations League.

Mary Earps has been called up as she continues to be Sarina Wiegman’s first choice keeper after she scooped another individual award in the week.

The BBC crowned the shot-stopper as Women’s Footballer of the Year, the first time a keeper has won the award.

Earps is joined by England regular Ella Toone and United Captain Katie Zelem.

Also in the squad is defenders Maya Le Tissier and Millie Turner, the latter replacing Chelsea’s Millie Bright, who withdrew through injury.

Grace Clinton, who is currently on loan to Tottenham, also comes into the side.

England must win both games and hope other games go their way if they have any chance of topping the group and qualifying for the Olympics.

Meanwhile, three United stars have been called up for Wales, goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel, defender Gemma Evans and midfielder Hayley Ladd.

They take on Iceland tomorrow night as they battle the threat of relegation.

Lucia Garcia could be in action for Spain who currently sit top of group C while Lisa Naalsund has been called up for Norway.

Geyse and Hinata Miyazawa came face to face tonight as Brazil hosted Japan in an international friendly and it was Geyse’s side who came out on top in a goal fest that ended 4-3.

Canada take on Australia in the early hours of Saturday morning and Jayde Riviere is expected to play for the hosts.

United’s next game is on December 10th when they will travel to Tottenham in the league.

Manchester United Women have beaten West Ham 5-0 at home in the WSL.

Marc Skinner made just one change from the team that started against Brighton last week, bringing in Parris, who scored a hat-trick in the Cup in mid-week.

Rhianne Skinner made two changes to the West Ham side who lost 3-2 to Bristol last weekend.

United got stuck in straight away, Miyazawa’s third minute shot deflected off a West Ham defender and Brazilian striker Geyse ran forward to head it in after breaking free of her marker.

Moments later and Toone forced Arnold into a brilliant save to prevent her shot from the left sneaking into the top corner.

Galton thought she’d made it two for United but the offside flag was up.

West Ham were forced into two early changes as Hayashi picked up a knock and Asseyi suffered a nasty clash of heads with Katie Zelem that forced the West Ham player off before half-time.

Though United were dominant, West Ham had their chances, mainly through Ueki whose shot was blocked by Mary Earps when she stuck out her left leg to keep United’s slender lead.

An unlikely goalscorer doubled United’s lead in the 42nd minute as Turner overlapped with Galton and found herself in the box. She made space for herself and buried it in the top corner.

With 12 minutes added on in the first half, Parris made it three, slotting her shot past Arnold.

The visitors were much improved in the second half and they had more chances. A free kick in a dangerous area ping-ponged around the area but Earps managed to get down low and keep hold of Tysiak’s strike.

Earps parried another free kick away from goal as the visitors looked to get something out of this game.

A bad challenge by Cissoko on Toone went unpunished making the England international furious. She was lucky not to be booked for dissent as she mouthed off to the linesman and squared up to Cissoko mid-match.

Two late goals for united sealed victory. Lucia Garcia finished off a lovely team goal after making a good run down the left in the 88th minute and a minute later Melvin Malard slotted it past Arnold following a corner.

It was a result which took United back up to 2nd in the League.

Manchester United: (4-3-3) 27. Mary Earps, 4. Maya Le Tissier, 6. Hannah Blundell, 7. Ella Toone, 10. Katie Zelem (C), 11. Leah Galton (17. Lucia Garcia, 78’), 14.
