Manchester United and England star Mary Earps was honoured by Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday as she received an MBE for her services to football.

Earps was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) amidst a very successful career both for club and country.

She played a pivotal role for England as they won the European Championship on home soil in 2022. Earps was also part of the Lionesses’ run to the World Cup final last summer. Unfortunately, they fell short at the final hurdle as they were beaten by Spain.

Earps has been part of United’s ranks since 2019 but her future is uncertain with her contract expiring this summer.

Arsenal have been strongly linked to the Red Devils star.

The 31-year-old has twice been named the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper in 2022 and most recently in 2023. She also claimed the Golden Glove at the World Cup last summer.

She will have the opportunity to win her first piece of silverware with United this Sunday when Marc Skinner’s side take on Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the FA Cup.

The shot-stopper spoke to PA (via club media) about her role in the women’s game and said, “I think there’s still a lot of hard work to do. I think that’s what we’re focused on, it’s the absolute recognition of how far we’ve come and that gratitude.”

“Standing on the shoulders of the people who’ve worked before us and hopefully the future generations can stand on our shoulders as well.”

She added, “It’s continuously everybody involved in the game just continuing to try and push it in the right direction
 long may it continue.”

Earps joins Marcus Rashford and Jonny Evans in a long line of United players to receive royal recognition.

Rashford was given his MBE in 2021 while Evans achieved the feat in 2023.

Manchester United Women’s team could not follow up last week’s late win against Leicester, as they came unstuck against old rivals Liverpool.

Coach Marc Skinner spoke before the match that United could not be distracted by next week’s FA Cup final when he stated, “We’ve got a showpiece final next week, but we’ve got a final this weekend, and we’ve got a final, obviously, when we play at Old Trafford against Chelsea.”

However, his side were unable to respond as Liverpool had almost the double of shots with 19 to United’s 10.

The Red Devils just shaded possession with 55% but a Jenna Clark goal in first-half stoppage time was enough to give Liverpool the win.

Not only was pride at stake but also the win saw the Anfield side jump above United into fourth place with only one league game left to play in the Women’s Super League.

United almost got off to the perfect start when they caught Liverpool napping as Leah Galton was put through one-on-one in the fourth minute of play, but could not convert as she fired the ball straight at Liverpool’s keeper, Teagan Micah.

The home side then had their first chance of the afternoon when Ceri Holland got through some industrious work down the right-hand side and played a great ball across which Taylor Hinds could only hit right at a grateful Mary Earps in the United goal.

Holland was once again in the thick of the action as she unleashed a dipping drive that dropped just above the United keeper’s crossbar as Liverpool began to take charge of proceedings.

In a back-and-forth first half, United’s Millie Turner had a great chance to open the scoring in the 15th minute when a corner dropped in the penalty box and after some pinball, Turner swivelled and shot right down Micah’s throat.

The best chance soon fell to Liverpool just before the 20th-minute mark when Emma Koivisto found herself in oceans of space but could only head against the post, leaving Earps stranded. There was a chance for her to put away the rebound, but it came at her very quickly and from a Man United perspective, luckily bounced wide of the post.

There was drama on the touchline when Liverpool’s head coach, Matt Beard, was shown a direct red card for saying something to the referee after Koivisto went down late in the first half.

Shortly after, the Red Devil’s best chance of the game fell to the usually reliable Ella Toone. The 24-year-old snatched at a half-volley chance from just inside the box after great work from Lucia Garcia down the right-hand side had set her up perfectly to finish.

United were eventually punished in the 48th minute of play when a short corner was whipped in by Marie Höbinger and Clark got the slightest of touches to deflect the ball past the stranded Earps.

Skinner had spoken of Liverpool’s threat from set pieces before the match and United were all at sea for the goal.

The second half was largely one-way traffic as the Red Devils failed to really create any major chances to threaten the Merseysiders’ lead.

Earps made a smart save from yet another long-range effort and in the 62nd minute, Liverpool striker Mia Enderby went on a great run and after beating a couple of players, fired a long-range effort that just dipped over the bar and beat the goalkeeper’s outstretched glove.

The Old Trafford side left it late but they did have a couple of chances to find an equaliser. In the 87th minute, Katie Zelem fired in a long ball that substitute Rachel Williams got her head to but could not find the required control to threaten the Liverpool goal.

The home team did have one more chance as a mix-up in the United defence led Turner to clear the ball against the Liverpool attacker who could only fire into the side netting.

However, the Merseysiders almost paid for their wastefulness when Zelem fired a late free kick into the box, that was headed across goal and substitute Melvine Malard was almost the heroine as she produced a great header that was clawed away by the inspired Micah.

The game ended and Liverpool now find themselves three points ahead of United with only one game left in the Women’s Super League, as it looks like the Red Devils will have to content themselves with a disappointing fifth-place finish.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils can now look forward to a crucial game next weekend at Wembley when they take on Tottenham Hotspur, aiming to win the club’s first piece of silverware in the women’s game.

Manchester United women’s Irish centre back, Aoife Mannion, has lavished praise on goalkeeper Mary Earps.

The United shot-stopper has had a meteoric rise over the last few seasons with her standing across world football skyrocketing.

Earps was a crucial part of England’s Euros win in 2022 and was also magnificent in her national team’s run to the final of the World Cup, saving a penalty in the final.

She has also been crowned the best keeper in world football for two consecutive years and won the BBC sports personality of the year award.

The 31 year old has carried her fine form into club football, as she put in an outstanding performance for the Red Devils when she faced a barrage of shots in the club’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the recent FA Cup semi-final.

Speaking to talkSport, her teammate Mannion has claimed, “What Mary is like on the pitch is exactly what she’s like in training.”

The defender was also full of praise for the attitude she brings to matchdays.

“She’s full throttle, incredibly authentic and passionate as a character and very inspiring to be around on the pitch.”

The defender once again praised Earps’ acts of heroism on the pitch and spoke of one particular save she made in the vital semi-final victory over Chelsea a couple of weeks ago.

“I was saying to her in the gym actually that there was one particular save that she made [vs Chelsea] where it almost looked like she had to hyper extend or dislocate her shoulder to stop the ball from going in the net and I’m surprised there’s not been any videos or memes [because] basically when she did that, I just put my hands to my face and gasped.

“For that moment, I was like a fan watching it and it’s very rare in football in a game as a player where you have a sense of something that’s so incredible.”

Referencing how crucial Earps is for the team she commented, “She’s an incredible goalkeeper and sometimes, little moments like that in games can remind everyone just how lucky we are to have her and how lucky I am personally to play alongside her.”

“Some of those saves were just enormous and can’t be understated how incredible and skilful they are. I’m really pleased she was in the net for us because it could have been a very different outcome if she wasn’t.”

United’s women aim to finish the season strongly as they take on Leicester City on Sunday and still have two mouth-watering fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea in the Women’s Super League.

However, Earps will be no doubt be champing at the bit to help United win their first piece of silverware when they take on Tottenham in the FA Cup final on the 12th of May.

There is little doubt that the England international will once again be of vital importance if United go on to win the trophy.

Manchester United Women reached the final of the FA Cup this weekend to the delight of 6800 fans in Leigh Sports Village. They held on for a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, beating the current Champions for the first time in their 11 meetings.

United’s goal scorers, Lucia Garcia and Rachel Williams were visibly emotional at the final whistle as they spoke to club media, with the sound of their team-mates’ dressing room celebrations audible in the background.

“I’m so tired but so happy,” Garcia gushed. “It’s the first time we’ve beaten Chelsea and the best time to do it because we’re through to the final for the second year in a row.”

Garcia was surprised to learn that her goal came just 42 seconds into the game after Leah Galton won the ball and charged down the left. She delivered a cross into the box and Garcia headed it past Hannah Hampton.

“Wow! It was an amazing moment but we have to work hard now to win the final at Wembley,” Garcia said.

Williams doubled United’s lead with another header in the 23rd minute. Ella Toone provided the assist.

“It was a rewrite of last year’s final and there’s no easy route to the final,” Williams said. “To put in the hard work we have, the staff, the players the fans, they were absolutely brilliant.

“We’re going to enjoy today and then look forward to the final and hopefully, fingers crossed, we might just be able to win it.”

It was a gritty performance from United, who had to defend resolutely for much of the game. Lauren James clawed one back just before half-time but United held on for the win.

It was an intense and physical game which Mary Earps described to the BBC post match as being “horrible” but United found a way to win.

Williams continued: “The manager wanted to change things up. I’ve been in this league a long time, I’m not bothered about playing pretty football. If we have to play long ball, pretty football, pattern football, you play whatever you need to win games. We wanted to have players that were not only going to work hard on the ball but off it as well.”

In the second half, Williams took a ball to the face as she tried to prevent Hampton from hoofing it up the field.

“A big part of my game is physicality, a lot of people were saying about how I took the ball in the face off the keeper and you just get on with it. I’ll do it, because what’s more important is that we do our jobs out there and we got our rewards today.”

Williams praised Earps for her “brilliant” performance as she made seven big saves to maintain United’s lead.

“That’s why she’s had the accolades she’s had over the last few years because when you need your keeper to step up in big moments she’s done that.”

Maya Le Tissier posted on social media following the game that it was 89 minutes of defending for United and again Williams beamed with pride as she spoke of her team-mate.

“Right at the end Maya’s doing diving headers, nearly getting kicked in the face. I think with the ups and downs of this season that we’ve had, when this is what you’ve got left to play for, I ain’t going home tonight sitting on the sofa thinking I wish we’d done this, I wish we’d done that, we’ve given absolutely everything we can and that’s the reward.”

After the game, the club posted footage of the players dancing and singing in the dressing room.

Williams joked, “Zel says drinks on gaffer but I say two days off because after that, my body’s going to be battered!”

United will now switch their focus to the league as they host Tottenham next weekend in what will feel like a practice for the final as Spurs beat Leicester to guarantee their place at Wembley on May 12th.

Mary Earps was a hero yesterday as Manchester United held on to beat Chelsea for the first time ever to reach the final of the FA Cup.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Earps said it would mean “everything” to win the FA Cup with the club she’s been with for the last five years.

United had a dream start as Lucia Garcia opened the scoring after just 40 seconds. Leah Galton won the ball off Eve Perisset and charged down the left. She delivered a cross into the box for Garcia to head past Hannah Hampton.

Twenty minutes later, United doubled their lead after Ella Toone stood strong to win the ball back, again on the left and deliver a cross to the near post where Rachel Williams was there to head it into the back of the net.

Former United player, Lauren James clawed one back for Chelsea in first half injury time but United dug deep and defended like their lives depended on it to hold on to the victory.

Earps pulled off seven saves to maintain United’s lead, including a world class dive to her right that denied James’ looping header that would have forced extra time.

“This season has been so hard, mentally brutal but I’m so glad with the win,” Earps said.

United have struggled for consistent form in the league, leaving them well outside of the Champions League qualifying places.

“We’ve been lacking aggression in our game this season and I think the girls knew we needed to give it a good go, not that we don’t think that every week but it’s heavy when things don’t go your way this year, it’s been difficult.

“[The match] was ugly, it was horrible, but I don’t care because we won.”

The England shot-stopper had a point to prove as she was dropped from England’s starting eleven in their last match in favour of Chelsea’s Hampton.

Earps thinks the performance against Chelsea was the team’s best of the season.

“It was the most gritty, the one with the most heart and I think everyone who came into the game knew what we were trying to achieve. We were holding a block against one-way traffic but it meant so much.”

United will now face Tottenham Hotspur in the final on May 12th but they will host Spurs next week in the WSL in what pundits are calling a dress rehearsal for the big day under the arches.

Manchester United Women ended their long-running misery of never winning against Chelsea with a 2-1 win that sends them to Wembley for the FA Cup final against Tottenham.

United got off to a flying start as Lucia Garcia headed in Galton’s cross to the back post in the first minute. The crowd went wild.

As the game settled, Chelsea controlled possession but United looked threatening when they won the ball back.

United defended resolutely. James had a shot that went wide, much to the relief of the home fans.

At the other end, United fought hard for every ball and Toone delivered a lovely ball into the box, Garcia and Williams were waiting and it was the latter who headed it in at the near post.

United had to be patient off the ball as Chelsea launched wave after wave of attacks. With five minutes of injury time to play Chelsea’s pressure paid off. A shot came in that Earps magnificently saved.

However, although United had kept her quiet, Lauren James found a way back in for the blues, netting just before the break.

Chelsea were relentless in the second half and United were hanging on for dear life.

Earps made two fantastic saves to maintain United’s lead in the first ten minutes of the second half.

The game was getting edgy as Chelsea tried to play for free kicks and penalties, meanwhile United were putting their bodies on the line with every wave of attack.

United netted a third but it was ruled out for offside.

Corner after corner came in, free kick after free kick but there was always a Millie Turner to head away, and Hayley Ladd to boot it up field.

Every single player was defending like their lives depended on it. Earps got booked for time-wasting. There were eight minutes of injury time but somehow United held on. As the ball went wide following a corner, there was one last big kick from Earps and the ref put her whistle to her mouth.

The north stand erupted, the curse had been broken and United had beaten Chelsea for the first time in their history to book their place at Wembley. Happy tears flowed from fans and players alike.

Team: Earps, Mannion, Le Tissier, Turner, Blundell, Naalsund, Toone (Ladd), Garcia, Galton (Parris), Williams (Malard)

A number of Manchester United women players have been in action for their countries over the past few days.

England Lionesses kicked off their European defence as qualifying for Euro 2026 got under way.

Millie Turner, Ella Toone, Mary Earps and Grace Clinton were called up for the games against Sweden and Ireland which concluded with a draw and a win for the current champions.

Earps was in goal against Sweden but was unable to keep a clean sheet as Sweden found a reply to former United starlet Alessia Russo’s first half goal.

Earps dropped to the bench against Ireland but United’s Ella Toone came into the side as Sarina Wiegman made five changes.

It proved to be a successful move as England beat the hosts 2-0 with goals from two former Reds, Lauren James and Alex Greenwood.

Aoife Mannion, who returned from injury for United recently, was on the pitch for Ireland.

Meanwhile, England U19’s were also in action and have secured their place in the Euro finals in Lithuania with Manchester United’s Evie Rabjohn helping them to victory.

Elsewhere, Lisa Naalsund helped Norway beat Finland 4-0 on home soil. She came on for ex-Red Vilde Boe Risa and produced the assist for her country’s fourth and final goal, scored by Elisabeth Terland of Brighton & Hove Albion.

However, they lost their second game of the campaign 0-1 to the Netherlands.

Gemma Evans and Hayley Ladd partnered each other at centre-back as Wales beat Croatia 4-0 in Wrexham before following it up with a huge 6-0 victory over Kosovo last night.

Academy player Mayzee Davies was also in the squad and came on as a 77th minute substitute in Kosovo.

Lucia Garcia was called up for world champions Spain as they beat Belgium 7-0 before besting Czech Republic 3-1 in their next game.

Outside of Europe, Geyse was also in action for Brazil in the SheBelieves Cup whilst Hinata Miyazawa came on as a sub for Japan in the same competition which was eventually won by the USA.

It was a good chance to monitor the performance of a number of players linked with a move to United next summer, in particular Canada’s Julia Grosso who scored the winning penalty against Japan to progress through to the final of the SheBelieves Cup.

Manchester United goalkeeper, Mary Earps, could be in danger of losing her number one spot with England.

Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton and Manchester City’s Khiara Keating have been outperforming Earps in the league of late and there’s a danger that the 30 year old could be dropped for the Euros qualifiers.

Earps is the back-to-back winner of the Fifa Best goalkeeper award and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year after helping the Lionesses to Euros victory in 2022 and to the World Cup final in 2023.

Earps was last year’s golden glove winner but Keating is currently leading the way this year with seven clean sheets, one more than Earps and two more than Hampton.

However, Hampton has reached that number after only becoming Chelsea’s first choice keeper since mid-December.

Earps has made more saves than Keating, 47 to her 46 but has save percentage of just two thirds compared to Keating’s 80.7% and Hampton’s 85%.

However, Earps has much more experience than both Hampton and Keating having won 48 caps for her country and keeping a clean sheet in over half of those.

She has been Wiegman’s trusted No 1 since the coach’s first match in charge of the Lionesses in September 2021.

Keating is uncapped, while Hampton has three caps and most recently started England’s 7-2 friendly victory over Austria in Spain in February.

Earps started in the next game which the Lionesses won 5-1 against Italy.

The competition for the jersey has never been more fierce with the three England internationals statistically being the best in the WSL at this point in the season.

The three keepers were all named in Wiegman’s side this morning for the April fixtures alongside fellow United stars, Ella Toone and Millie Turner.

Sarina Wiegman could have a tough decision to make for England’s Women’s European Championship qualifiers against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland next month.

Manchester United Women have lost 3-1 to Manchester City in the Women’s Super League.

There were chances for both sides in the opening ten minutes.

An early corner for United was delivered well by Katie Zelem but Le Tissier’s header was off target and City eventually cleared their lines.

Lucia Garcia found herself a little too eager to launch an attack and was flagged offside moments later.

Parris too had an opportunity that Khiara Keating had to save before Geyse tested City’s resolute backline.

City had a long range shot that forced Earps into a fantastic diving save as the first half hour turned into a battle of the shot-stoppers.

However, after 37 minutes, United gave City far too much space and Jess Park opened the scoring.

Moments later, with United’s defence undone, Shaw thought she’d made it two, but was flagged offside.

A minute before half time Park was quickest to react following a corner and volleyed past Earps.

United needed a big second half but all they got was further misery as seconds into the restart Shaw made it three to the hosts.

A big blow for United came in the form of an injury to Jayde Riviere, who slipped and fell awkwardly as she changed direction.

City looked as though they were settling for the three and looked in control but United never let their heads drop and managed to bag a consolation goal.

Hannah Blundell whipped in a cross that deflected behind Khiara Keating, who had otherwise had a good afternoon.

The result means United could find themselves in fifth at the end of the weekend depending on Liverpool’s result tomorrow.

Marc Skinner’s Manchester United are taking on bottom of the table Bristol City on Sunday, but it’s the run of fixtures on the horizon that Skinner may be more focused on.

The following week, United take on Manchester City in the league at the Etihad before they face Chelsea next month in the FA Cup semi final at Leigh Sports Village.

With the league title out of sight and their dreams of qualifying for the Champions League all but over, many would forgive Skinner for focussing his attention on beating Chelsea for the first time to qualify for the FA Cup final.

With that in mind, Skinner could choose to rest key players against Bristol with some fans even suggesting Mary Earps could be left out of the side in favour of Phallon Tullis Joyce.

Skinner has had an injury crisis at the back this season with Gabby George ruled out long term with an ACL and Jayde Riviere only just returning from injury after United had come to rely heavily on the Canadian international.

Aoife Mannion is back in the squad, making a brief return against Southampton in the FA Cup a few weeks back and Evie Rabjohn was in the squad against Brighton last weekend.

Gemma Evans also stepped up whilst Riviere was out injured so Skinner could choose to rotate at the back against Bristol.

Skinner has options in midfield, Emma Watson is still out long term after rupturing her ACL on international duty at the start of the season and Hinata Miyazawa is back training on grass but could be sidelined for a few more weeks.

With Leah Galton out injured with a return date unknown at this stage, Skinner may be forced into some rotation in the middle of the pitch.

Lisa Naalsund has found form in her last few appearances, getting on the score sheet against Brighton with a fabulous second half strike.

Hayley Ladd and Irene Guerrero have been introduced as second half substitutes a lot this season but Skinner could choose to bring them into the starting line-up in order to give Captain Katie Zelem, who recently made her 150th appearance for the club, and Ella Toone a rest.

Geyse is back with the squad after Brazil lost to USA in the final of the inaugural Women’s Gold Cup but it is unlikely she will start against Bristol.

Melvine Malard stepped up against Brighton, bagging three assists in the 4-0 dismantling of the Seagulls so it is expected that she will start for Skinner on Sunday.

Lucia Garcia is often more effective when introduced as a substitute but with fresh speculation over her future at the club, it will be interesting to see whether she starts or not.

With United looking likely to finish out of the Champions League places this season, rumours are rife that United might part ways with Skinner. The FA Cup is the only competition United have left to fight for and success against Chelsea in April and a trip to Wembley could save his United future. In this regard, how he picks and sets out his team and which players he rests against Bristol could be absolutely crucial.
