Manchester United’s Antony has become the latest player to praise the impact of the youngsters coming through the club’s academy.

In what has been a dark year in many respects for United, the progress of the youth teams and academy players have been a shining light.

This season has seen the rapid development of academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnachoin the first team, while Omari Forson and Willy Kambwala have also become regular members of the squad.

In addition, last week saw the introduction of Ethan Wheatley against Sheffield United, who became the 250th academy graduate to represent the first team.

The form of the under-18 team has also been a cause for huge optimism, as they won the Premier league Cup against Manchester City and destroyed arch-rivals Liverpool 1-9 earlier this month.

Captain Bruno Fernandes has also already spoken on the need for the first team to create the right conditions for academy players to continue to flourish when they break into the squad. Speaking to the club’s official website, Antony has become the latest player to lavish praise on the young players breaking through.

“It’s certainly been an excellent season for Garnacho. He’s still a very young lad and full credit to him for his performances. I’m really happy for him and hope he continues doing what he knows how to do with a focused mind and continues helping us marking, making passes and running for the team.”

The 24 year old also reserved praise for Kambwala and Kobbie Mainoo.

Discussing the French defender’s recent game against Liverpool he stated, “I’m really pleased for them. Willy is really hard-working, always training hard and I’m delighted with the game he had against Liverpool. He had a great game and I congratulated him afterwards.”

“Kobbie has had a longer run of games,” Antony continued. “He’s a huge talent. I see so much talent there and I’m really happy for his performances.”

“I’ve been in the position of these young players – although I’m still only 24, I was also playing at their age as well. With their talent, together with focus, a supportive family and looking after themselves, things will happen naturally for them.”

The Brazilian winger scored at the weekend and certainly put in one of his better performances as of late. He will be hopeful that he and the young players can finish the season on a high with a victory in the FA Cup final in less than a month’s time.

Emerging Manchester United centre-back Willy Kambwala has reportedly developed a habit of arriving at Carrington hours before the scheduled time for training to take part in injury prevention exercises.

Kambwala’s impressive performances for United this season whenever given the chance by Erik ten Hag, have seen the youngster rise from a youth team regular to a first-team player in a very short space of time.

He made his full debut for United in the 2-0 defeat against West Ham in December at the London Stadium.

More recently he was handed just his second start for the Red Devils in their blockbuster 2-2 draw vs. bitter rivals Liverpool at home, amidst an injury crisis in the defensive department. Even at the moment, Kambwala and Harry Maguire remain the only fit and available central defenders available to Ten Hag for selection, with the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane all sidelined.

Against Jurgen Klopp’s men, Kambwala was excellent and did a great job of nullifying Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah. His exploits earned him praise from Ten Hag and Rio Ferdinand, who named him the man of the match.

However, it hasn’t been all easy for Kambwala, who has had to overcome a lot of fitness difficulties during his time at Old Trafford. The Frenchman joined United at the same time as Marc Jurado (from Barcelona), Alvaro Fernandez (Real Madrid), Alejandro Garnacho (Atletico Madrid), Isak Hansen-Aaroen (Tromso) and Radek Vitek (Olomouc), as part of the club’s campaign to recruit some of the most promising players from Europe.

The Red Devils forked out £3.5million, for the then 16-year-old, who was tipped to have a bright future. However, just two weeks into his new life in England while already playing for the U21s, Kambwala suffered a severe ankle injury in a friendly match against Salford City. The setback ruled him out of competitive action for almost a year.

After that, he struggled for consistency and sustained a string of smaller issues that hampered his progress.

It speaks to Kambwala’s mental fortitude that he worked through all those challenges to capture Ten Hag’s attention and promotion into the Dutchman’s senior set-up.

According to The Athletic, the teenager is not taking chances with his fitness and has adopted a ruthless regiment to ensure he stays injury-free.

The newspaper reports, “Kambwala had been brought to their attention by Mathieu Seckinger, an academy scout based in France who also identified Hannibal Mejbri, who was signed the previous summer from Monaco’s academy.”

“Kambwala, who still lives in club digs, is known for clocking in early at United’s Carrington base before training to get through additional injury prevention work — often two and a half hours before the rest of the squad are due to arrive.”

It’s a testament to the level of his dedication and ruthless committment – almost akin to that of the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo – that he’s willing to go to such lengths to ensure he’s ready to play when called upon by his manager.

Kambwala’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025 and it’s not a surprise that United are eager to agree terms over a new deal to extend his stay at the club.

]]>

Manchester United travelled to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth in the 17:30 BST Saturday Premier League clash.

Erik ten Hag named an unchanged starting XI from the one that held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw a week ago. Andre Onana started in goal with a defensive four of Diogo Dalot, Willy Kambwala, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ahead of him.

Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes were deployed in the middle of the park. Rasmus Hojlund led the line with Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford on either side of him. Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

Shambolic defending from United

United headed into the break a goal down and with the score at 2-1 in the Cherries favour. In truth, the Red Devils were lucky to still have been in the game considering the sheer amount of clear-cut chances that Bournemouth failed to convert.

Bournemouth registered 12 shots at Onana’s goal and most of them were excellent goalscoring opportunities. It seemed that every time they went forward and attacked United, they found it very easy to cut through the backline and test Onana.

Indeed, both goals scored by Andoni Iraola’s men came about as a result of some pitiful defending from United. Dominic Solanke shed first blood just 16 minutes into proceedings when he capitalised on a number of mistakes from United.

Garnacho casually lost the ball and failed to get back to provide defensive cover. The ball found its way to Solanke, who only had Kambwala. The centre-back lost his footing, giving Solanke the space and time to pick his spot. The England striker made no mistake as he fired the ball into the back of the net for his 17th goal of the Premier League season.

United fought back and against the run of play, restored parity via Fernandes who volleyed his effort past the reach of Neto.

However, as has been the case for large parts of the campaign, Ten Hag’s side couldn’t build on the momentum and conceded soon after – this time five minutes after grabbing the equaliser. Bournemouth produced two line-breaking passes in midfield as they took advantage of just how sluggish United were in closing down the spaces. An unmarked Justin Kluivert found himself inside the box with amateurish space. The 24-year-old squeezed his shot into the bottom-left corner. Onana should have arguably done better and should have certainly not been beaten at his near post.

The most shocking thing about Bournemouth’s second goal and how it came to be is that the Cherries didn’t really have to break a sweat to get in. Even Kluivert himself would have been confused with just how much space and time they left him to work with.

Beyond the Reds’ poor defending, they just seemed lethargic and bereft of any ideas. The players were unable to keep hold of the ball and sustain meaningful spells of pressure and possession that would have given Bournemouth one or two issues to think about.

Going forward, United looked bereft of any ideas and any little attacking impetus seemed rushed and speculative at best. In conclusion, it was the typical performance fans grown accustomed to under Ten Hag this season.

Garnacho and Mainoo burnout concerns

Another theme that was noticeable in the match vs. Bournemouth was just how tired Garnacho and Mainoo seemed. This has been the case for some time now and it reared its ugly head once again.

Garnacho and Mainoo have this season taken massive strides in their respective United careers and have quickly become two of Ten Hag’s trusted lieutenants. Garnacho in particular has started more than 30 consecutive games for the 20-time English champions across all competitions. Mainoo on the other hand made his 24th appearance across all competitions. Since he came back into the team late last year, he has been an almost guaranteed presence in the manager’s starting XI selections.

The academy duo was not at their sensational best at the Vitality Stadium and considering the minutes they’ve been racking up in recent weeks, it’s not very surprising that fatigue and burnout seem to have caught up with them.

On more than one occasion, Mainoo was caught in possession as he held on to the ball for one or two seconds longer – very uncharacteristic of him to say the least. Not to say that the 18-year-old was poor but he wasn’t as sharp as he usually is. Mainoo still did well and outshone most of his senior and more experienced teammates. In fact, he’s the one who won a penalty just after the hour mark that drew United level. Mainoo’s shot took a deflection and hit Adam Smith’s hand, giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty. Fernandes scored from the ensuing spot-kick.

Garnacho on the other hand appeared to be finding it difficult to execute his defensive responsibilities. One thing that cannot be questioned about the Argentine is his work rate but against Bournemouth, he lacked the edge and tenacity that usually highlight his play. Garnacho was taken off at half-time and replaced by Amad Diallo who took his position on the right wing.

It’s important to note that both Garnacho and Mainoo are still teenagers and while their talent is undeniable, their workload must be carefully managed to keep them continuously fresh and fit.

Amad and Mason Mount deserve a bigger role in the team

Amad played the second period of the game following Garnacho’s substitution and during the time he was on the pitch, the Ivorian was good and showed the kind of impact he can have if afforded more minutes.

The winger was very neat and tidy on the ball and gave United some much-needed composure in the final third.

His passing was measured and accurate. Often, United have been slammed for being too frantic in their actions but Amad was the polar opposite to this. When required, he slowed the game down and helped knit the attack together.

Before the Bournemouth game, the 21-year-old only had 46 minutes of top-flight action to his name this season. It’s scandalous that he hasn’t been used more this term considering his valuable skill set and what he brings to the side.

Another player whose situation closely mirrors Amad’s is Mason Mount. The English midfielder came on in the 78th minute for Mainoo – a surprise personnel change considering Casemiro was yet again United’s poorest player on the pitch and it would have Ten Hag would have been best served by doing away with the Brazilian.

Mount was Ten Hag’s marquee summer signing but he has been used very sparingly when available although admittedly, his maiden season at Old Trafford has been disrupted by injuries.

In recent games when he has been thrust into the action, Mount has been a breath of fresh air. It’s puzzling that he’s not playing more during a period in which Casemiro continues to be a liability for United in midfield.

Both he and Amad need more chances if United are to finish the season strong and hold off their rapidly approaching rivals.

Andre Onana has endured a rollercoaster of a Manchester United career to date.

His signing from Ajax in the summer was met with much fanfare as the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag finally had a modern keeper who was as comfortable as they come on the ball.

However, he soon became the villain as a string of high-profile errors in the Champions League helped contribute to the side’s early exit, especially two soft goals conceded in Istanbul that saw the Red Devils throw away the lead twice against Galatasaray.

However, the keeper has really turned his season around since then and has been one of the few consistently strong performers for the Red Devils since the turn of the year. He even won the club’s Player of the Month award for March.

Speaking to Sky Sports on his early criticism he claimed, “in life, everything is temporary and so you have to find a good balance”.

“Not too high, not too low… I knew six months before, I was seen as the best. Then it can be that in six months, everything changes and you just have to deal with the situation.”

“Critics are a part of life, especially when you reach this kind of level”.

The Cameroonian has also been complimented for his positive role in and around the dressing room and staff at Carrington have described him as the biggest positive influence around the club.

The 28 year old has also taken on a mentorship of the younger players, acting as a sounding board and especially paying close attention to breakout star Willy Kambwala. It is said that “his fluency in Spanish, French, English, Italian and his understanding of Dutch marks him the ‘golden thread’ of the dressing room”.

Onana has also been quick to praise his teammates and coaching department for their role in helping him settle into the squad.

“We are in this together. I want to thank Tom [Heaton], Altay [Bayındır], Richard [Hartis] and Craig [Mawson]. It’s been a difficult time, a difficult situation, a difficult start for me. We have to protect each other, especially when things are not going good”.

“Most of the keepers who have been here at Manchester United had difficulty in the beginning. These are the kind of messages they were giving me, and the players also helped me so much”.

One of the most controversial topics of 2024 has been United’s ludicrous openness which has seen them concede more chances than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues.

Elaborating a little on the issue he claimed, “if this year is a price to pay, I’m ready”.

The 28 year old then made a somewhat incredible statement for a keeper when he asserted, “last season, Manchester United didn’t concede so many shots. But I don’t think it’s a big issue because at the end of the day, football is about goals and now we are scoring a lot. We’ll receive some against us sometimes, but we have defenders that work hard and we will do everything to block the shots”.

“It’s the risk we take because we are a very offensive team with the quality we have in front”.

Whilst Onana is probably trying to deflect criticism from his defence and also demonstrate he has the confidence in his own ability to deal with such situations, it echoes the worrying statements from his manager.

Many fans have been left taken aback by Erik ten Hag’s inability to understand the problem with conceding so many chances and have been downright bemused by his stubbornness to continue to play this type of chaotic, transition-fuelled football.

The goalkeeper did admit that injuries have certainly played their part in the team’s defensive woes but concluded that any player representing the club should have the skillset to deal with it.

“Well, it’s quite easy when you’re used to playing with the same back four,” Onana concedes but added, “We are Manchester United, so every player around the first team has the level to belong here”.

“Unfortunately we have a lot of injuries but that is an opportunity for others – like Willy, he was brilliant for us”.

“Being a goalkeeper is a position with a lot of responsibility. You have to be ready to play with anyone and… I can’t complain. Of course, when you are used to playing with the same line, it’s the best, but at the moment we don’t have that”.

Onana refused to answer the question on his best game, as he doesn’t believe he has shown his true potential yet but he does have a favourite experience, the topsy-turvy 4-3 FA Cup victory over Liverpool last month.

“It was crazy,” he puffs. “I was in shock. It was just beautiful to be there. The noise, it was so loud. The joy… wow!”.

Onana will be hoping to have a quieter evening than he has become accustomed to as of late against Bournemouth this evening.

3-0. That’s the shocking scoreline that prompted many to call it the worst defeat under Erik ten Hag.

There have been losses by bigger margins, who can forget the 7-0 loss to Liverpool, but the manner in which Manchester United folded without a fight at their home vs a team that barely survived relegation a year earlier was baffling.

United travel to Bournemouth, the same opponent that engineered that nadir and try to claw back some pride.

The Champions League qualification race looks done for so the rest of the season is about winning as many games as possible and hopefully, the FA Cup too.

Here are the key themes that will decide the fate of this game vs Bournemouth-

Press, press, and press

It is a damning thing to say but the reality is, Bournemouth look closer to Ten Hag’s vision for United in half the time with Andoni Iraola.

They press like machines in a proper pattern by identifying triggers and using the sideline almost as an “extra man”. Dominic Solanke’s opening goal in the reverse fixture came as a result of that concerted press.

They press high, but retreat into a low block quickly if initial attempts fail which means there is no sea of space between the attack and midfield, something which has bothered United repeatedly.

In the cauldron-like stadium of Bournemouth, they will start fast and United might not have a choice but to play it long and over their press.

Otherwise, a deja vu feeling might not be far away with an early goal by Iraola’s men.

Dominic Solanke vs Willy Kambwala

Hojlund’s hot streak of January has cooled off and he has become more isolated in this structure, or the lack of it. Solanke, on the other hand, is enjoying the best top-flight scoring season of his career.

Solanke has already hurt United once and his ability to be involved in the play even when he isn’t scoring marks him out as a multi-faceted threat.

Willy Kambwala successfully came through the baptism of fire when he started against Liverpool and acquitted himself well. Solanke will provide a different challenge and will undoubtedly target him instead of going up against Harry Maguire.

If the Frenchman can handle Solanke as well as he did Liverpool’s forwards, mainly Darwin Nunez, he will go a long way towards establishing himself as more than just an emergency option when United are injury-ravaged.

Milos Kerkez vs Antony

If Marcus Rashford isn’t able to shrug off his issue and play this game, then a front three of Garnacho-Hojlund-Antony is expected. In that case, Antony will line up against Milos Kerkez, the Hungarian left-back who has taken to the Premier League like duck to water.

Kerkez has impressed so much that even United have been credited with an interest. On the other hand, Antony is also starting to find some form.

This promises to be an exciting battle as Antony will try to drag Kerkez inside with him, leaving space for United’s right-back to overlap.

Going the other side, Kerkez is a good progressive passer and regularly breaks lines with his passes, something United are missing from Luke Shaw this season. A good performance here could be an audition for the Hungarian to play the role at Old Trafford next season!

Manchester United’s defence creaked once more as Liverpool ran riot at Old Trafford with 28 shots last weekend.

Fortunately the Anfield men forgot to bring their shooting boots and Erik ten Hag’s men could escape with a 2-2 draw, after two wonder strikes by Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

The sheer number of shots that the Red Devils have given up this year is terrifying, with no club giving up more this calendar year in Europe’s top five leagues.

This is largely down to Erik ten Hag’s unfit for purpose system, but another significant factor is the sheer number of injuries his side have faced. It was reported after the Liverpool game that Willy Kambwala, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were the 31st defensive combination of the season for United.

However, in the midst of this chaos, it has has provided the opportunity for 19-year-old Kambwala to stake his claim for a significant role in the future at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman received massive plaudits for his effort against Liverpool where he played like someone well beyond his years.

Kambwala’s performance was praised by his manager Erik ten Hag, who said in a post-match interview:

“He has been training a while with us and progressing well. The next generation need to step in and he is doing brilliant. The challenge for him is doing it consistently. Great opportunity for him and we have other options like bringing Casemiro in at centre-half, but today he deserved it and he showed it on the pitch”.

Rio Ferdinand labelled the defender “magnificent” after the impressive display, while he was also praised in his home country of France.

French magazine, L’Equipe, named him in the team of the week of French players playing across the continent; a high honour when you consider the sheer depth of talent for France in Europe. And it is even more impressive when you consider the opposition the young defender was selected against.

The outlet noted that Kambwala held his own against senior established stars, with Liverpool needing a controversial late penalty to rescue a point.

Shortly after the game it was reported that United aim to tie down their new starlet to a long-term contract and see him as playing an integral part in the first team next season.

The Frenchman’s future, just like that of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, will certainly be fascinating viewing for any United fan.

]]>

Manchester United have given nearly three times the amount of minutes (3,637) to teenagers in the Premier League this season than the rest of the top 6 combined (1,245).

Fans of the Red Devils have been forced to tolerate a lot this season. After finishing third last season and winning a trophy for the first time since Jose Mourinho delivered the Europa League in 2017, hopes were high at the start of the year.

However, ever since United’s midfield was ripped to pieces in a highly unconvincing home win against Wolves on opening day, expectations have sunk and the Old Trafford outfit find themselves in sixth, well off the Champions League places.

Erik ten Hag’s men followed this up with a pathetic showing in the Champions League which saw them finish last, while their Carabao Cup defence also fell at the second hurdle.

In the midst of this abject form, an FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City and the sheer number of games that young players have played this season are the two shining lights of this campaign.

The Red Devils dominate their PL rivals when it comes to giving teenagers minutes, especially in comparison to the rest of the top six. Whilst United have given 3,637 minutes to teenagers, league leaders Arsenal have only allowed 14 minutes. Manchester City have provided 698 minutes and bitter rivals Liverpool a paltry 117.

Alejandro Garnacho, at only 19 years old, has quickly turned himself into the side’s most potent attacking weapons, as he has scored nine goals and created another four in all competitions this campaign.

The Peoples Person relayed back in February that the Argentine had played more minutes than any other teen in the division. Furthermore, the 19 year old recently tied Michael Owen’s record by scoring a brace as a teenager in three different league games this season, most recently at Stamford Bridge.

In addition, the rise of 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo will always be synonymous with the 2023/2024 season. The young Stockport native has dazzled pundits and fans alike and, in a similar vein to Garnacho, has cemented himself as a vital cog of the team. The youngster does so many things so well but two wonder strikes versus Wolves and Liverpool will live long in the memory.

The most impressive thing about both players is not only the minutes they are playing but how crucial their contributions are. These goals also helped United break another youth record as they helped United become the team with most goals scored by teenagers in Premier League history.

It is scary to think where Ten Hag’s side would be without Garnacho or Mainoo this season.

Willy Kambwala has had nothing like the influence of the aforementioned two, but this season may just have unearthed yet another future gem.

The 19-year-old Frenchman did himself proud when he had to step in alongside Jonny Evans at West Ham due to an injury crisis in December. Ever since, he has been a regular squad member and made substitute appearances versus Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, his display against Liverpool, when he played his first ever 90 minute game for United, was widely praised and has got fans excited about another academy product making his breakthrough at Old Trafford.

Similarly, 19-year-old Omari Forson was also given his Premier League debut this campaign and will hope for a taste of more in the coming future.

Youth development has always been vital to the lifeblood of the club and in such dark times, fans will be relieved that. at least in this regard, United’s future looks very bright.

The star-studded under-18s who recently mauled Liverpool 1-9 are a testament to that and, logically, supporters at Old Trafford can look forward to more fresh-faced teenagers making their mark in the coming seasons at the Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United were dominated by Liverpool in their Premier League game on Sunday but took an unlikely lead in the second half only to relinquish it late on.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had 28 shots as compared to United’s nine and dominated the ball, having 68 percent possession and created chance after chance with Erik ten Hag’s system allowing them a free run at goal.

Individual brilliance saw the Red Devils score twice in the second half but the Merseysiders should have scored way more than just two if not for some fine last-ditch defending from young Willy Kambwala.

The academy graduate was given his second start in the English top flight and his first at Old Trafford due to the mounting injury crisis at the club.

Kambwala’s impressive display

Prior to the game, both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans joined Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof on the sidelines meaning the Dutch boss had no choice but to turn to the 19-year-old.

The Frenchman impressed with his recovery pace, his fiery tackles and his ability to remain calm under pressure with his manager and pundits praising him after the game.

The Peoples Person relayed reports that the club was highly impressed with Kambwala and have decided to offer him a new deal with his current contract getting over in 2025.

The former Sochaux academy star is also set to become a regular in the first team moving forward but till the time a new contract is not signed, his future remains the subject of conjecture.

Dot Sport have now reported that Serie A giants Napoli are interested in the centre-back and are looking at him to fill the void left by Kim Min-jae, who departed for Bayern Munich last summer.

Napoli want him

Napoli CEO Aurelio de Laurentiis wants to begin negotiations soon after identifying defence as a major area in need of reinforcements.

“One of the names on De Laurentiis & Co’s list is young Manchester United defender, Willy Kambwala.

“The Congolese, naturalized Frenchman, convinced everyone, offering a solid and impressive performance against Liverpool which was also noticed by the Azzurri manager who will try to start a negotiation with United.”

Judging from Kambwala’s enormous potential and the planned defensive overhaul, there is no way INEOS should let the highly-rated youngster leave.

Manchester United got dominated by Liverpool in their Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday but ended up taking a surprise second-half lead which they ultimately relinquished late on yet again.

It was the visitors who started on the front foot and took the lead through Luis Diaz and the first half was another clear example as to why Erik ten Hag’s style does not work.

The Merseysiders ran through the non-existent United midfield at will and had 28 shots as compared to United’s nine and dominated the ball as seen from their 68 percent possession.

Individual brilliance saw Bruno Fernandes chip the keeper from near the halfway line while Kobbie Mainoo curled in a screamer from the edge of the box to hand the hosts an undeserved lead.

Kambwala’s impressive showing

Aaron Wan-Bissaka then gave away a penalty late on which Mohamed Salah scored from but the performance from United left a lot to be desired.

Jurgen Klopp’s men could have scored a lot more if not for some fine last-ditch defending from Willy Kambwala and the United academy graduate earned a lot of praise from his manager and pundits alike.

This was just his second start in the English top-flight and yet the 19-year-old displayed maturity beyond his years and his recovery pace impressed one and all and it seems like the perfect attribute to have when trying to play in a high-transition system.

Now as per HITC, the Red Devils have been so impressed with the Frenchman that they are set to offer him a new contract in a bid to avoid any late hassle as seen from the club’s discussions over a new deal for Omari Forson.

New deal on the anvil

Kambwala, for his part, has always revealed his love for the club and his enthusiasm and skills deserve to be rewarded. His current deal is valid until 2025.

This is a great turnaround for a player whose early United academy career was ruined by injuries but the player has fought back to remind everyone why the club brought him to Manchester from FC Sochaux for €4 million back in 2020.

“The 19-year-old has impressed United’s coaches and HITC is told that they have made it known to the club’s hierarchy that they should prioritise a new deal for Kambwala.

“Sources with knowledge of the situation have told HITC that Kambwala is ‘very happy’ at Old Trafford and is delighted to be fully integrated into the first-team squad, as he has been for most of this season.

“Kambwala’s current deal is due to expire in 2025 and the club are ready to offer him a long-term deal. United are set to work on Kambwala as they hope to avoid the same issues they are currently experiencing with his friend Forson.”

Interestingly, despite this development, United are known to be prioritising a new centre-back in the summer with Raphael Varane set to be released while the futures of quite a few other defenders remain in the balance.

Kambwala reaping rewards

If new recruits come in, the former France U16 international might find chances hard to come by and hence a loan exit could be on the cards.

But Football Insider have rubbished those claims and added that the club are looking to integrate him fully into the first-team squad and he is set to become an important player next season.

“A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Red Devils chiefs feel he has “huge” potential after breaking into the first-team setup this season. Sources say the defender is set to be involved more regularly next season.”

The 6.3ft star can also double up as a right-back if needed and his versatility is another factor going for him. The youngster just needs to keep his feet firmly on the ground and keep working hard.

Manchester United’s 2023-2024 season is in danger of going down as one of the worst in the club’s recent history.

The Red Devils lie in sixth place in the league, 11 points off teams in the Champions League places and are in serious danger of being overtaken by both West Ham and Newcastle. An eighth place finish would represent the club’s worst league finish since 1990, when they finished 13th but did manage to win the FA Cup – a potentially startling symmetry to this season.

The United defence has been incredibly suspect all season as they shipped 15 goals in just six Champions League group games, crashing out in last place in December. What’s more, no team in Europe’s top five leagues has faced more shots on goal than the Red Devils in 2024.

Of course, the players and manager need to have a long hard look in the mirror when this season is done and dusted, but there is another major reason behind this season’s pathetic displays – a scarcely believable list of absentees through injury, especially in defence.

Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw have missed the majority of the season and they are arguably the club’s two most valuable defenders, not just in defending but also in Erik ten Hag’s build up play.

In fact, all the backline has been missing at some point during the season, resulting in an incredible 31 different back four combinations during the season. This was highlighted by Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire being the only two fit centre backs to play in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

When analysing the names, it can be seen that the only real consistent in the defensive line as of late has been Diogo Dalot and perhaps it is no surprise that he has been enjoying arguably the best season of his career, highlighted by his fine display versus Liverpool at the weekend.

The Portuguese international has played 26 times in 31 Premier League matches. However, nobody else has been able to play for any considerable stretch of time in the first eleven.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has played 13 times, Raphael Varane 16, Victor Lindelof 11, Harry Maguire 14 times and even the 36 year old Jonny Evans has started nine times and been subbed on many more. This means that many players have had decent game time, but really no central defender has been able to consolidate their place in the team, never mind having two continuously available to form an actual partnership.

The left back is the most ridiculous situation where Tyrell Malacia has not played all season and Shaw has only played 11 matches with a few of them being in the centre back position.

In total, there have been six different left backs used this season with only two of them being recognised left full backs, Shaw and Sergio Reguilon. Sofyan Amrabat, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot have all had to deputise in the unfamiliar role.

Ten Hag perplexed fans once again during his post-match press conference when he claimed his side played very well despite dominated in terms of shots and possession against their arch-rivals.

However, one comment he made did make a whole lot of sense. Without being able to field anything close to a consistent back four, it is normal that they players can’t build up routines or patterns to understand one another.

There is much talk about the pursuit of sporting directors and the upcoming transfer window but perhaps the most important piece of business INEOS carry out will be connected to the ongoing investigation of the massive failings of the current medical team employed at Old Trafford.

It is vital to not let any player or manager off the hook but at the same time it is worth considering, could any team actually be successful defensively under such ridiculous circumstances?
