Manchester United loanee Alvaro Carreras grabbed an assist in another fine display for Benfica in a dominating 5-0 win versus Arouca.

The Eagles dominated the game from start to finish, taking a three goal lead into half-time.

Despite the scoreline, the home side only shaded the possession figures with 51% of the ball. Nonetheless, they did dominate the match with 19 shots to the visitor’s five.

Carreras struggled for game time originally in Portugal but he has really come into his own the last month and he has been a much more regular member of the team.

He recently scored his first goal in senior football and has made numerous starts in the last few fixtures.

This has led to reports that Benfica will take up the option of signing the United youngster on a permanent basis in the summer after being convinced of his talents.

This evening was another fine example of his progress as the marauding fullback gave the opposition trouble all game.

Sofascore gave him an impressive 7.5 for his contribution to the match.

The 21 year old was solid in defence as his side kept another clean sheet. He made three clearances and one interception in the match.

He was able to make one tackle and won 100% of his aerial duels in the encounter.

However, any United fan who watched Carreras’ progress in the academy knows his true potential lies in his attacking game.

The Spanish under-21 international did not disappoint as he broke down the left and passed the ball through to Rafa Silva, who chipped in from inside the penalty box. It was his first assist in a Benfica shirt and likely the first of many in senior football.

He also contributed three key passes and had an impressive 92 touches of the ball.

He completed a massive 48 out of 62 passes for a pass accuracy of 77%. He was also able to torment the Arouca right back and successfully completed three of his four crosses.

Benfica have already consolidated second place in the league with only one match remaining of the league season. This will take place away to Rio Ave, where Carreras will be hoping to get another chance from the first minute to consolidate a fine finish to the season for the young talent.

Manchester United loanee, Alvaro Carreras, was given another chance to start for Benfica as he has begun to establish himself in the first eleven.

After making sporadic appearances from the bench since moving to the Lisbon side in January, Carreras has started two out of the last three games and even found the back of the net for the first time in his professional career recently.

Despite a poor performance and result that saw Benfica lose 2-0 away to FC Famalicão and in the process, award Sporting Lisbon the league title, due to the fact As Águias can no longer mathematically catch their city rivals, Carreras shone.

Benfica dominated possession with 58% and had more shots as they had 18 to the home side’s 10. Despite a limp overall performance, Carreras put in one of his side’s better displays.

He was given a respectable score of 7.3 on Sofascore for his night’s work. The Spaniard blocked one shot and made one interception to repel the Famalicão attack.

He also showed his strong defensive presence by successfully completing five tackles. The young defender won both his aerial duels and six out of 11 ground battles.

As usual, though, the wingback’s talent shone through in an attacking respect. Carreras had a mammoth 82 touches of the ball and completed 43 out of his 51 passes, resulting in a pass accuracy of 84%.

The 21-year-old also completed three key passes and was successful in his one attempted long ball. The exciting fullback whipped in four crosses with one finding its intended target.

He was also able to have one shot on goal but it was blocked by the resolute home defence.

The result is obviously a disappointing one for Benfica but Carreras will take heart in the display. It was a complete showing where he was solid defensively but showed his true attacking talent.

The youngster was very highly rated at United’s academy and was wonderful on loan last season at Preston.

It seems that his days at Old Trafford are numbered though as Benfica have openly talked about activating the buy option they have in his current deal, as he has proven himself to be a capable squad member for the Lisbon side.

However, United seem certain to include a buy-back option in the deal, if they ever choose to bring back the impressive fullback.

The Spanish Under 21 international will be hoping to make another start against Arouca next Sunday and show United exactly what they have been missing this campaign.

Benfica and Alvaro Fernandez Carreras secured a 3-1 win at home to Braga which took them within four points of Sporting Lisbon at the top of the Liga Portugal.

The Eagles dominated the game as they had 22 shots to the away side’s 11 and enjoyed a comfortable 62% of the possession.

The Lisbon side got off to a poor start and they conceded the opener in the 28th minute of play when Ricardo Horta fired home for the visitors.

However, the home side sprung into life in the last 20 minutes, scoring three goals to secure the victory and keep their slim chances of the title alive.

The United loanee Carreras, after impressing massively last time out and scoring his first senior goal, entered the field of play after 52 minutes and played his part in his side’s recovery.

Benfica levelled the game with a fine finish from Marcos Leonardo before taking the lead in the 84th minute after a swift attacking move ended with David Neres heading home.

There was still time in stoppage time for Leonardo to bundle in his second goal of the game.

Carreras was given a score of 6.5 on Sofascore for his 38 minutes of action.

With his side chasing the game, he was not required to defend much but what he had to do, he did well.

Carreras made one interception and two successful tackles.

As he often does, the United academy player contributed offensively with 38 touches and an impressive passing accuracy of 84%.

The 21 year old also won 100% of his aerial duels but was less successful on the ground, only coming out on top in 33% of his duels.

The youngster did try and take the game to the visitors by showing off his dribbling skills but could only successfully complete one out of his four dribble attempts.

Nonetheless, it will have been a great experience for him to be part of such a comeback and sharing the left hand side with Angel Di Maria will surely benefit him immensely.

With only three matches left in the season, he will be hoping for more opportunities before there is a decision made on whether Benfica activate the option to buy or whether he returns to Old Trafford.

Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez has revealed just how proud he is of his performance during Benfica’s 3-1 win against Farense on Monday, which he crowned with a first goal for the Liga Portugal giants.

Fernandez’s appearance for Benfica vs. Farense was just his second top-flight start for the club which he joined in January after United cut short his Granada loan spell.

The left-back got on the end of a cross from Angel Di Maria and expertly controlled the ball before guiding it into the far post with his right foot.

The United loanee registered 98 touches of the ball, won four tackles and made two key passes. He also emerged victorious in 10 of the 14 ground duels he delved into.

It was certainly a game to remember for Fernandez, who spoke to reporters after the match and gave his verdict on his own display.

The Spaniard said, “We always want to win, do our best and today we did well, and I’m happy for the team and the goal.”

“I’m proud, I came here to help and do my best. I’ve been welcomed from the start.”

He added, “I just have to keep working. My teammates are doing their best to integrate me quickly.”

The 21-year-old’s sensational display also received praise from the Portuguese press, who waxed lyrical about him while urging Benfica to make his stay permanent.

Record wrote about Fernandez, “In a match in which he has stood out, Álvaro Carreras crowned his good performance with a goal, Benfica’s third against Farense and also his first in senior competitions.”

Notícias ao Minuto relayed, “The defender on loan from Manchester United scored what was the decisive goal of the match (1-3), in the 67th minute, after other highlights in the team’s defensive and offensive processes, especially in the first half. Carreras thus showed that the German coach can count on him on the left side of the Red defence.”

SAPO Desporto even compared him to a “Porsche” due to how good he was.

Fernandez has made 12 appearances so far for the Eagles. While he’s not a guaranteed starter, he’s certainly giving Roger Schmidt something to think about.

From United fans’ point-of-view, they will be left wondering whether Fernandez should have stayed to play in the left-back position. Due to injuries sustained by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, the Red Devils have no recognized senior left-back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has played on that part of the pitch but he’s hardly a specialist. Ten Hag has also been forced to name teenagers like Harry Amass to the bench to ensure there is enough cover at left-back.

Benfica boss Roger Schmidt has insisted that the situation of Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez remains open and no final decision has been made regarding a potential permanent stay.

Fernandez saw his six-month spell at La Liga outfit Granada CF Cut short in favour of completing a surprise switch to Benfica in January.

The full-back had to be patient to get a solid opportunity to demonstrate his abilities at the Primeira Liga champions, who are battling to win a record-extending 39th top-flight crown.

On Sunday night, Fernandez finally got his chance as he made his first appearance for the Eagles since a 12-minute off-the-bench cameo against Estoril on the 10th of March.

He impressed as Benfica convincingly beat Moreirense 3-0 in Lisbon. The United loanee registered a pass completion rate of 91%, successfully delivered three crosses, made three clearances and as many tackles.

The Spaniard’s contributions were not lost on club manager Roger Schmidt, who branded him as “talented”.

After the final whistle, Schmidt was asked by reporters whether he and his Benfica bosses had already made a transfer decision on Fernandez.

The 57-year-old coach replied, “The situation is clear, he is on loan and there is the option of him staying at Benfica.”

“It’s an open process. He hasn’t had much playing time, because Aursnes has played well, but he is a talented player and there is an option for him to stay.”

He added, “We will see what is best for us and for the player. Right now we are focused on finishing the season well, only then will we make the decision.”

“But it was good for him to play today and win.”

Benficas next task is a crucial one – an away trip to Marseille in the quarter-final of the Europa League on Thursday. Fernandez will be hoping that his efforts were enough to earn him a place in the starting XI.

Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez Carreras got a rare chance to show off his abilities for Benfica on Sunday night as they beat Moreirense 3-0 in Lisbon.

It was the Spaniard’s first appearance for the Eagles since a 12 minute bench cameo on the 10th of March against Estoril.

There have been mixed rumours about the 21 year old’s future due to his lack of playing time for the Portuguese giants.

It was thought that Carreras would be returning to Old Trafford due to a lack of involvement at the end of the season but there have also been more recent reports that Benfica plan to sign him as a backup left back option.

Benfica were dominant in the match and had 19 shots to the visitor’s eight. Carreras had little defending to do as the opposition failed to register a single shot on target.

The Spanish Under-21’s biggest involvement came in the 43rd minute of play when he received the ball out wide and he cut inside to unleash a ferocious strike with his right foot that was parried away by the keeper.

He also registered one shot that was blocked, as he took the opportunity to rush forward against weaker opposition.

Carreras was awarded a score of 7.1 on Sofascore and will be pleased with his night’s efforts.

The marauding left back was heavily involved with 59 touches and a passing accuracy of 91%, making 30 out of his 33 passes.

He also made three crosses from the left with one finding its intended target.

From a defensive perspective, he made three clearances and successfully completed three tackles for his team.

Carreras attempted 10 ground duels, winning four and won one of his three aerial contests.

All in all, it was an impressive display from a player who has been starved of game time as of late.

As Benfica still chase the league title and are in the quarter finals of the Europa League, the young fullback will be aiming to be more heavily involved as the season enters the final stretch.

Their next assignment is the small matter of a trip to Marseille in the quarter finals of the Europa League this coming Thursday.

Benfica plan to sign Manchester United’s Alvaro Fernandez Carreras despite his stuttering loan spell at the club.

The Spaniard enjoyed a wonderful time on loan last season at Preston, as he won the Championship side’s young player of the year award, playing 42 times.

However, this season has involved a lot more upheaval for Carreras as he started the campaign on loan at struggling Granada.

Carreras started off with a bounce but after a lack of gametime from November onwards, he moved to Benfica in January.

The 21 year old has hardly had a chance to show off his talent as he has largely been resigned to a bench role.

In nine league matches, he has not left the bench five times and in the other four, the maximum time he has been on the pitch in any one game is 45 minutes.

In fact, he has only completed 78 league minutes. His only starts have come in the cup or Europa League, where he has also struggled to make any real impact.

Therefore, it was reported recently out of Portugal that Benfica were not too convinced by their January signing and may not look to sign him for the €6 million he is available to them for.

However, Portuguese paper Record have different ideas.

They report that “Benfica plan to activate Álvaro Carreras’ purchase clause”.

Reportedly, they want to sign Carreras “whether the left-back plays half of the starting games or not, which would force club to pay €6 million”, which was written into the agreement signed with United back in the winter window.

The left back could still theoretically play the guaranteed starting roles as despite only starting two games, there are eleven left. However, as the matches enter the nitty-gritty stage of the season, with Benfica still challenging on three fronts, it seems unlikely they will suddenly begin to trust the Spanish Under-21 international.

Perhaps the Portuguese side see enough talent to take the risk, even though he is clearly not trusted yet to threaten the regular starters at the club.

Carreras was very impressive for Manchester United’s youth teams and was discussed as one of the club’s most talented products at Carrington. Now it seems likely that he will continue his career in red, but at the Estádio da Luz, not Old Trafford.

The post INEOS must be ruthless and purchase a left back to relegate injury-ridden Luke Shaw to bench appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Manchester United have been plagued by injury all season, but no position has suffered more than that of left back.

After an impressive first season under Erik ten Hag, it looked like Luke Shaw was back to his best and new recruit, Tyrell Malacia, proved to be reliable back up, with a couple of highly credible performances, most notably in the 2-1 home win over Liverpool.

With highly-rated Alvaro Carreras coming through the academy, United seemed they had one position sorted for the foreseeable future. Wrong.

It was announced before the pre-season tour of the United States began that Tyrell Malacia had picked up a knee injury that has been shrouded in mystery ever since. Despite numerous reports that the player was close to a return throughout the season, it was finally revealed that he will most likely play no part in the rest of the current campaign.

Furthermore, Luke Shaw has only been available for 15 matches this campaign after picking up a muscle injury in August which saw him miss 92 days and he was hurt again last month. The United coach also revealed that the player only has an “outside” chance of making the last games of the season.

Carreras has also been sent on loan, first to Granada and then to Benfica, where his playing time has been minimal so far.

Logically, the Red Devils are very concerned about this particular position and as a consequence, they have bumped the left back position up the priority list according to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, as they aim to definitely buy one this summer.

The question is, should this new left back be a backup replacement for Malacia or should it be someone who can relegate Shaw to a support role?

In defence of the Englishman, he is incredibly important to how United play and when he is on form, United tend to do well.

The Athletic have already justified the 28 year old’s importance to the Old Trafford side by stating, “the England left-back is not only their best defender in wide areas, he is also vital to how Ten Hag’s team progress the ball between the two penalty boxes. Shaw’s left-footedness is essential to Ten Hag’s tactics and the Dutchman values the passing angles and defensive orientation this brings”.

Furthermore, the player has developed a strong on-pitch connection with Marcus Rashford and it is possible that one of the reasons behind the forward’s poor form this season could be to do with the little game time Shaw has had.

The two England stars clearly work well together on the left with Rashford often finding Shaw on overlap runs. Rashford has spoken of the relationship they have claiming, “it’s something we’ve had a lot of time to work on and grow into understanding each other’s game”.

However, the player is 28 years old and the unfortunate reality is he has never shaken his persistent injury problems. He is in his 10th season for the club but has only pulled on the red shirt 275 times. Compare this to Bruno Fernandes who is in his fifth season for the club but has already played 222 times for the Red Devils.

Whilst the England international did only miss 13 days due to injury last season, this is sadly the exception to the rule. He has already racked up 117 missed days in this campaign and missed 85 days in the 2021/22 season.

In fact, the player has not been available for selection a scarcely believable 1223 days since he signed for United. Whilst the data is skewed a little from his serious leg break in 2015, the player on average misses 122 days a season.

Add to this, when the former Southampton player does play, he is hardly a model of consistency. As mentioned previously, when he is on top form, he is fantastic and objectively one of the best full backs in the league. However, he often isn’t. And at 28 years old, it is hard to imagine this will ever change.

Therefore, INEOS must be ruthless and aim to bring in a left back who will take Shaw’s place as first choice. The Red Devils have been linked to high level options such as Miguel Gutiérrez at Girona and Alejandro Balde at Barcelona.

Both players are young, Gutierrez at 22 years old and Balde at 20, yet have sufficient top level experience to be considered viable first choice options.

Moreover, Shaw would offer incredible depth as a backup and could be a major help to the new left back’s settling in period. United’s very own Jonny Evans is an example of a player who has been injury-ridden in the recent past, but with playing less and managing game time, has been a very valuable signing for the Mancunian team.

It stands to reason that if Shaw is not made to put his body through so much, especially with the physical rigours of being a modern day fullback, he will be injured less. A Balde or Gutierrez playing 35 games a season and a well-rested Shaw filling in for 15-20 games sounds like an exciting prospect for United fans as a way to solve at least one hole in the team that every passing day seems to more resemble a colander.

]]>

It has been a challenging week for Manchester United’s array of young loanees and the loan experience in general has not been easy for many.

Will Fish at Hibernian and Radek Vitek are the two exceptions of United academy products that have grabbed their chance, or even been given one to show off their talents after their loan move.

Hannibal Mejbri started the season with increased minutes and scored a thunderous strike against Brighton in September. However that has certainly been the highlight of his club career to date.

The Tunisian barely featured for United after October and was sent out on loan to Sevilla. Speaking on the move, the 21 year old was clearly excited about the opportunity, praising the Spanish side’s project.

However, after falling out with teammates and not impressing the coach in training, Hannibal has rarely got off the bench for the Andalusian side, playing a total of 37 minutes over three La Liga games.

This has led to it being reported that Sevilla have no interest in activating the buy option they have or United in keeping him beyond the summer.

Moreover, it seems unlikely that United will get good money for him anywhere, or be persuaded to make him an integral member of their own first team squad, after six months of bench warming at such a critical stage in his career.

Another season that started with early promise but has fizzled out of late has been that of Alvaro Carreras.

The Spaniard started really well on loan at Granada getting numerous minutes but once the autumn got into full swing, he fell down the pecking order and was swiftly moved onto Benfica in Portugal.

The Galician left back has once again struggled for minutes and whilst not playing too badly when given a chance, he has been limited to 201 minutes of action, largely off the bench.

The defender was once again an unused sub in Benfica’s last game at the weekend against Portimonense.

Joe Hugill is another case of a young United loanee going out to experience professional football, but barely getting a kick.

The 2022 Youth Cup winner’s start could hardly have gone better when he scored on debut for Burton off the bench and racked up an assist in his next game.

Lately however, the striker’s appearances have been limited to half an hour off the bench, where he has hardly been able to influence the game at all.

The Youth Cup winning captain, Rhys Bennett, has also only managed one game for Stockport and that was a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Tranmere.

An even more extreme case is the highly rated academy product, Dan Gore has only played one game for League One strugglers Port Vale. The midfielder was hooked off after 54 minutes in a 0-1 home loss to Portsmouth and has been missing in action since.

Finally, defensive midfielder, Maxi Oyedele, is another Carrington product that has been limited to brief cameos off the bench, making little to no impact in League Two for Forest Green.

Obviously, not everyone can have the success Amad Diallo had at Sunderland last season, where he won the PFA Fans Championship player of the year, where he scored 14 goals and provided four assists for the North-East side.

However, it is very worrying that very few of these highly-rated academy products can make any sort of impact at third and fourth division level.

Of course entering a new team is tough in January and especially in teams like Port Vale and Burton who are fighting for their lives in their respective divisions but it begs the questions, what is wrong with the club’s broken loan system.

The club rightly prides itself on its wonderful youth record, but that will only suffer if they cannot find a way to make loans more productive for the player and the club. Very few youngsters like Alejandro Garnacho or Kobbie Mainoo are good or lucky enough to break through right into the first team.

Of course some blame must lie with the players but arguably more must reside with the club, when time and time again players are sent on loan with little return for any of the interested parties.

Perhaps the club needs to rethink its approach and also reassess where they are sending their loan players to.

Stockport are fighting for promotion, so in the crucial spring months, may not want to rely on a 20 year old. As previously mentioned, Port Vale and Burton are fighting for their lives in the lower regions of their divisions. Forest Green also sit 23rd in League Two, so once again, they may not trust a 19 year old to hold their midfield together.

It might be prudent if the club chose teams who are more stable or have less at stake, who might be more prepared to blood youngsters and help foster their talent.

Sometimes, to the untrained eye, it feels the club just accepts anyone who will take them.

This is yet another issue that new part owners INEOS will have to try and rectify over the course of the next few years.

Alvaro Carreras got his first taste of European action yesterday when he was included in the starting line-up for Benfica’s first leg tie against Toulouse.

The Portuguese side narrowly won the match 2-1 with a penalty at the death from Angel Di Maria in the 98th minute after the Ligue 1 side were reduced to ten men just two minutes before.

Benfica had originally taken the lead via another penalty from the former United winger midway through the second half but the French side soon found an equaliser in the 76th minute through Mikkel Desler.

The side from the Estádio da Luz were dominant throughout as they clocked 27 shots to Toulouse’s six and also enjoyed the lion’s share of possession with 59% of the ball.

United’s young Spaniard made only his second start for Benfica since joining in January and being his first European tie, it will surely have been special.

The 20 year old played 59 minutes of action before being subbed off around the hour mark when the scores were still level.

He was awarded a score of 6.8 on Sofascore for his night’s work.

Due to the home side’s dominance of the ball, Carreras kept the ball well with a pass completion rate of 85%.

He was also heavily involved in the Eagles’ build up play, as he had 42 touches of the ball.

The youngster even had a shot on target that was saved well by Toulouse keeper, Guillaume Restes.

The left back also contributed defensively as he made two clearances and also made one interception.

Carreras was not so effective in his duels though as he only won 50% of his ground duels and 0% of his aerial battles.

This is certainly something that he will want to make more impact on, as his loan continues.

The young defender was also wasteful from his crossing, as neither of his two attempts found their intended target.

The United academy product will be hoping to retain his starting berth as Benfica take on Vizela on Sunday evening in the league.
