Manchester United u21s had to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Brighton and Hove Albion. Here are our player ratings for the match.

Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Dermot Mee – 7 – Two magnificent saves in the dying minutes saved United from defeat.

Habeeb Ogunneye – 5.5 – Was decent defensively, blocking one cross and cutting another out at the back post but he simply didn’t offer any threat in attack before being subbed off at the break.

Rhys Bennett – 6.5 – The best of the centre backs, he was strong in the air and had the best passing from the back but still could have moved it quicker at times.

Sonny Aljofree – 5 – Didn’t execute his passing game at all and looked shaky defensively, was particularly poor as he looked lost for Brighton’s goal.

Sam Murray – 5.5 – Brighton’s few chances tended to come down his side as he was caught between centre-back and right-back and wasn’t fast enough to make up for his positioning.

Harry Amass – 7.5 – The clear stand out for United, it was easy to see why he has been drafted into Erik ten Hag’s senior squad. As usual, he was calm and composed on the ball, providing some dangerous runs and delivering the cross for Brighton’s own goal. The wingback role didn’t entirely suit him though as he was given little in the way of support which he typically feeds off so well with his passing.

Zach Baumann – 6.5 – A solid match from the 17-year-old who covered a lot of ground in the midfield. Made some important interventions defensively and moved the ball well from the deep midfield areas.

Ruben Curley – 5.5 – Made little impact and played at too slow a tempo to dictate the match.

Maxi Oyedele – 5 – One of the worst culprits for slowing the match down, looked to take too many touches and put his foot on the ball when the game was crying out for a quicker tempo.

Charlie McNeill – 5 – Posed very little threat in attack, didn’t offer an outlet and wasn’t able to run the channels like in recent matches.

Ethan Ennis – 5 – Apart from one run his night was easily forgettable, despite being a natural winger he disappointingly didn’t drift across the pitch to cause any danger to the Brighton backline.

Substitutes

Ashton Missin – 6 – Offered a bit more attacking pace on the right wing but didn’t get involved a lot.

Ethan Wheatley – 6 – Was more of a presence up top and had some good link-up play but he was feeding off of scraps.

Amir Ibragimov – 6.5 – A fantastic one-two move with Wheatley was probably the most exciting attack United produced all match. Added some drive off the bench and made some fantastic runs but it was clear he hasn’t played much with some of his teammates as they missed movement and weren’t privy to the quick intricate passing he was trying to get going.

Jacob Devaney – 6 – Didn’t have much time on the pitch. Made a goal-saving block at the death and had a few nice passes in midfield.

United planning multiple January loan exits for academy's finest despite first-team struggles - report https://thepeoplesperson.com/2024/01/02/manchester-united-planning-to-loan-out-multiple-academy-talents-in-january-273742/ Tue, 02 Jan 2024 21:00:10 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=273742 Realistically, Manchester United only have the FA Cup worth fighting for while…

Realistically, Manchester United only have the FA Cup worth fighting for while trying to salvage their Premier League season and hopefully, manage to squeeze into the top-four at the end of the season.

Their current form does not make it likely but once injured stars start coming back in January, the squad will be in much better shape, and the team can then try and build some winning momentum.

If and when the big-name players regain fitness, the likelihood of academy starlets receiving minutes will likely reduce with the Red Devils already out of two competitions.

Loans for starlets

That is why the club plans to send out their promising academy starlets on loan instead of hanging on to them and stunting their development as per The Manchester Evening News.

The first in line for a loan move away from the club is Dan Gore, someone who has attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund. United will not sanction a sale but a temporary move could be arranged.

There is interest from Championship clubs including Ipswich Town and despite making his first-team and Premier League debut this season, Casemiro’s return could mean the midfielder’s chances are reduced.

“Manchester United are considering loaning midfielder Dan Gore this month.

“Gore, 19, made his debut against Crystal Palace in the League Cup win in September and he has already generated interest from Preston North End, as well as other Championship clubs.”

Keeper to leave on loan

Up front, United are struggling for goals and the club are set to offer a new contract to Joe Hugill and the former Sunderland academy goalscorer impressed Erik ten Hag enough to earn a place in the matchday squad for the win against Everton.

But Ten Hag does not see him as an immediate solution and hence a loan could be arranged with League One and League Two clubs interested.

“United have received enquiries from League One and League Two clubs about taking striker Joe Hugill on loan.”

United also plan to send one of their academy keepers out on loan. Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee have both been involved in first-team training this season but need competitive minutes and could earn a move away.

Dermot Mee has committed his future to Manchester United with a new contract.

The goalkeeper was joined by Nick Cox, the Director of United’s Academy, at the annoucement with the club congratulating Mee on the new deal.

Having joined the ranks at Carrington in 2019 from Walsall, Mee has played a number of times for both the U-18 and the Premier League 2 teams.

He’s also experienced a wide range of loans, having joined Altrincham on an emergency loan earlier in the year. He made four appearances for the National League side.

Mee has also spent time at Fulham Academy, Trafford FC, Runcorn Linnets and Witton Albion. He also did a work experience loan with AFC Wimbledon.

The 20-year old has represented Northern Ireland at different levels of the youth set-up, having played for the U-17, U-19 and U-21 sides.

The goalkeeper recently received his first taste of first team football at United, having travelled with the young squad to San Diego to take part in the summer camp and pre-season match against AFC Wrexham.

Though Mee did not take part in the actual friendly, it will have been a formative experience taking part in a match against a senior side in front of a sold-out stadium. The Snapdragon Stadium holds a maximum capacity of nearly 35,000.

There has been a significant overhaul at Old Trafford this summer in the goalkeeping department.

David De Gea, Matěj Kovář and Nathan Bishop have already departed the club, with potential deals for Dean Henderson and Radek Vítek nearing completion as well.

Only Andre Onana has, so far, arrived in their places. A deal for Fenerbache goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is reportedly close to completion, further buttressing the position.

It still leaves a lot of space for access to the first-team however. This is something Mee appears to be banking on by committing his long-term future to the club.

Manchester United’s Dermot Mee has joined Altrincham on an emergency loan deal until January.

The move came at the last minute and was officially announced just hours before making his debut for his new club against Maidenhead United.

The 19 year old is no stranger to short term emergency loans having gone on three last season to non-league outfits Trafford, Runcorn Linnets and Witton Albion.

United have revealed that the deal will see the young keeper still “regularly train with United under the terms of the agreement and can also represent Academy age-group sides in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.”

In desperate need of a keeper, Altrincham made a quick move to bring in Mee after their two senior keepers were ruled unavailable.

Matt Gould was sidelined after suffering a concussion on the weekend.

Meanwhile, Altrincham’s summer signing, former United academy graduate Ollie Byrne, awaits international clearances after his move from Welsh club Connah’s Quay.

Having featured in the u21s’ pre-season friendly against Altrincham, the National League club seemingly were impressed with what they saw in Mee.

As a result of the last minute move, the keeper was immediately thrown into the action last night as he conceded two in a 2-0 loss to Maidenhead United.

It is unknown if Mee will still be utilised by Altrincham after the return of Gould and Byrne, which explains the agreement that he will still train and play with United’s u21s.

Having joined Manchester United in 2015 from Walsall, Mee has come through the ranks and already featured for the u21s twice this season with disappointing performances against Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

An under 19 international for Northern Ireland, the young keeper regularly spent time away from the club in addition to his non-league loans, with a work experience loan with AFC Wimbledon and a youth loan to Fulham’s u18s to get playing time.

WestLondonSport.com player rating: 7 (tied for highest in the team) – “Thrown straight into a difficult debut after just one training session with his new team-mates, the on-loan Manchester United right-back was reckless with the ball on occasions but did well overall, showing tenacity when defending and going forward.”

Stats: 2 key passes, 73 touches, 82.1% passing accuracy
