Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, has claimed that Alejandro Garnacho has amazing potential but needs to be coached better.

The Dane’s comments come after the Argentine’s performance against Arsenal where he was heavily involved in the second half action but his efforts were often fruitless as his end product was wasteful.

His performance resulted in pundit Gary Lineker claiming that the player’s final ball was “awful” during the match.

Peter Schmeichel has also added to this by claiming that in spite of the 19 year old’s obvious talent, he is not being coached properly at the club.

Speaking to Premier League Productions he criticised United’s overall attacking system.

“It’s all about when you get the ball, I am going to try and score a goal. I am not going to look at any teammates. I am just going to try myself. There doesn’t seem to be a system or an idea of when we do this, these are your options and this is what you can do or that is what you can do.”

The legendary keeper then turned his attention to the academy product and stated, “I think someone like Garnacho today is a great example that doesn’t work. I am watching Garnacho, who had the ball so many times on the left, and I am hoping for him, for now and again, to do something different. But, every time, he is trying to finish it himself – He needs to be coached a little.”

The Champions League winning keeper explained that this lack of coaching makes the player predictable and allowed the Gunners to handle everything he threw at them despite his best efforts.

“You can’t do the same thing every time… He has pace, yes, but he has players up there that are options. Other options … He’s not challenging or changing his angle.”

However, Schmeichel refused to place too much blame on the youngster and pointed the finger of blame at the United coaching staff.

“I am not criticising him as such because he is a young man and full of energy. But he is up against possibly the best defenders in the league. They will suss him out like that very quickly, therefore, you need to put some variation in what you are doing.”

The pundit was not all critical however, as he paid a massive compliment to the attacker’s talent, but he fears it is not being utilised properly.

“He is a great player and prospect. He could be one of the best players in the Premier League, without a shadow of a doubt. He has done so many good things, but in the last month or two, it kind of feels like every time he gets the ball, he thinks he has to finish it.”

The former keeper’s fears are well-founded as despite starting the season well, the Argentine’s campaign has fizzled out as of late.

To be fair, Garnacho has been overplayed and at 19 years old, he bears too much responsibility to make things happen up top, especially with Bruno Fernandes injured.

He has played 47 times this season and has regularly been the most utilised attacking option. The youngster’s talent is there for all to see, but a regular criticism United fans have of Erik ten Hag is that the players do not seem to play to any clear patterns.

Despite the former Ajax coach’s tactical reputation, a lot of the Red Devils’ goals seem to come from moments of individual brilliance and spontaneous actions, rather than carefully planned out systems.

Worryingly, Garnacho’s performance at the weekend was eerily similar to what fans have seen of Marcus Rashford this season, running into trouble and losing the ball at will, with no clear plan of action.

With huge talents like the Argentine and Kobbie Mainoo at the club, and plenty more breaking through the academy at present, it is vital that they receive the education they deserve to maximise their obvious talent.

Former England striker Gary Lineker has blasted Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho for not doing enough nor coming up with the goods when it mattered in the club’s loss at the hands of Arsenal over the weekend.

United were beaten 1-0 by the Gunners, whose goal was grabbed by Leandro Trossard.

The result left Erik ten Hag’s men in eighth position in the Premier League standings, three points adrift of Newcastle in sixth and with just two top-flight games left to play.

United were slightly better and much more compact against Arsenal at Old Trafford. The team also registered more possession and more shots but unfortunately, they didn’t really test David Raya.

Most of the Red Devils’ joy in attack came down Garnacho’s flank on the left.

The Argentine produced multiple take-ons and got into some very promising positions but his decision-making often let him down – something that is expected of a player so young and still learning their craft.

However, this did not spare the 19-year-old from being criticised by Lineker.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Leicester City and Barcelona made remarked, “Arsenal went there, it’s not a place where they’ve been particularly successful the last decade or so.”

“All they would have cared about at this stage was that they had to get that win come what may. There was a degree of caution to the game that, I was thinking, ‘God, they might pay for this, you know.'”

Lineker added, “Garnacho was a threat, but his final ball was awful the entire match, I thought.

“I mean, he’s dangerous and all it needed was, you know, one where he cuts in and could conceivably bend one in the top corner and then all of a sudden the title race is pretty much done really.”

United return to action on Wednesday when they take on Eddie Howe’s Newcastle – a crucial fixture that will have a huge say in determining who or not qualifies for the Europa League.

]]>

Manchester United duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have seen their respective rankings in the prestigious 2024 European Golden Boy Award rankings drop amidst the club’s woeful form.

Garnacho and Mainoo have been two of the few positives United fans have enjoyed during a tumultuous campaign that currently has the team in eighth place in the Premier League standings after 13 top-flight defeats.

The two have so far managed 74 appearances across all competitions between them.

Garnacho has registered nine goals and five assists in that period while Mainoo has three goals and one assist to his name.

Mainoo has impressed with his calm and composed performances that have often made him stand out head and shoulders above some of his more senior and experienced teammates.

Garnacho on the other hand has been a livewire for United and has often brought life to an impotent attacking line that’s proven too predictable at times.

A report covered by The Peoples Person late last month recognised the exploits of the two teenagers, who were named among the top ten candidates vying for the European Golden Boy prize.

Garnacho was ranked in third position, only behind Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) and Joao Neves (Benfica). Meanwhile, Mainoo was placed in seventh.

However, in a fresh update, the two youngsters have seen their positions drop as United continue to struggle on the pitch.

The Argentine winger is now in fourth position after being overtaken by Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery.

Mainoo has also come down from seventh to ninth, with Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona) and Rico Lewis (Manchester City) now ahead of him.

Reported United target Neves has also dropped from second to third. The Portugal international has been mentioned to be a prime target for the Reds and has been earmarked as a replacement for the ageing Casemiro.

Some of the factors considered in coming up with the ranking include players’ performances, with metrics such as playing time, transfers and various other variations of the Golden Boy Football Benchmark Index being taken into account.

One thing that could explain why Garnacho and Mainoo have dropped is fatigue. The two have been overused and in past games, seem to be tired and suffering from burnout.

Former Manchester United star, Juan Mata, has waxed lyrical on Manchester United starlets, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

In a season of darkness, two shining beacons of hope have been the play of academy products Garnacho and Mainoo.

The Red Devils have struggled immensely in this campaign as they have barely been able to secure a positive goal difference and find themselves in a real fight for even Conference League football.

It is true that they can look forward to an FA Cup final later this month but this should hardly be the yard stick for measuring success for a team as big as United.

However, one shining light has been the rise of certain young players with Omari Forson, Willy Kambwala and Ethan Wheatley all making their senior debuts this season.

However, what has impressed pundits and fans the most is the role played by Mainoo and Garnacho, as they have become indispensable members of the first team in such a short period of time.

Former player Mata has become the latest to wax lyrical over the meteoric rise of the two teenagers.

Commenting on the rise of the players to the club’s official website he claimed, “[I’m] very [impressed]. I mean, I knew Alejandro, I know what he’s capable of.

“He was already showing signs of how good he could be. I think this season he made a step forward. He’s more consistent. He’s performing at a very high level, almost week in, week out, scoring incredible goals.

“I’m very happy for him, for his family too. He deserves it.”

The Argentinian was briefly a team mate of the Spaniard as Garnacho actually made his debut in Mata’s penultimate game for the Red Devils against Chelsea in 2022.

One player he would have probably been less aware of is Mainoo, although he has not been any less impressed by the Englishman.

“I’m really impressed with Kobbie. Of course I haven’t seen much of him before, but he looks like he’s been playing for the club for longer than [he has].

“[In his] first games for United he already looks so mature. He looks like a player. With the ball, without the ball [he’s] focused. [He’s got a] bright future ahead.”

Mata also spoke of the positive impression the Stockport native has made on the rest of the squad and claimed that his current captain only had positive things to say about him as a human being.

“Bruno [Fernandes] tells me he’s also a great kid. He listens. He wants to learn. He’s humble. So, he has everything to succeed.”

While both players have had a drop-off in form as of late, this is only to be expected with the huge amount of games they have both been asked to play this season.

The teens will be aiming to win their first piece of silverware of their senior careers on the 25th of May at Wembley and if Erik ten Hag’s side are able to do it, it is logical to assume that both starlets will play a key role in it.

Manchester United have announced the three players who will battle it out against each other for the club’s April Player of the Month award.

United played six matches across all competitions. In this period, Erik ten Hag’s men recorded two victories, one loss and three draws – the most recent one of which was the 1-1 against Burnley at Old Trafford last weekend.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes is competing to win the prestigious award against teammates Alejandro Garnacho and Harry Maguire

Fernandes has enjoyed a sensational April that saw him bag an impressive seven goals and two assists in the six games he featured.

The Portugal international found the back of the net against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final and also grabbed braces vs. Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Such was the level of Fernandes’ impact on the team in April that he was named man-of-the-match on three of the six occasions United faced off against their opponents.

Three of Fernandes’ goals are also in the running to claim United’s Goal of the Month prize too. These are his headed finish at Chelsea, his fantastic strike from the halfway line against Liverpool and finally the rocket he produced in the 4-2 triumph over Premier League strugglers Sheffield United.

Garnacho capped the month with two goals and one assist in the six games he featured. The 19-year-old is on the three-man shortlist for a Player of the Month award for the second consecutive month, in what is shaping up to be a very productive individual campaign for him.

The Argentine winger kicked off April with a double against Chelsea and it was very unfortunate that he was part of the losing side on that occasion. One of his goals – the headed finish he came up with from Antony’s sublime trivela assist – is an entry in United’s shortlist for the Goal of the Month award.

His assist was for Maguire’s equalising goal vs. the Blades which paved the way for United to complete a sensational comeback.

In Marcus Rashford’s absence due to injury in the Reds’ last two games, Garnacho really stepped up and stood up to be counted.

Finally, Maguire also scored two goals against Coventry City and then in the next game vs. Sheffield. Unsurprisingly, both were headed finishes.

It may go unnoticed but Maguire was available to Ten Hag for selection amidst a crippling injury crisis that forced him to mostly play alongside Casemiro at the heart of the team’s backline. The England international barely put a foot wrong.

United will announce the winner of the Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards on Friday.

Manchester United’s Antony has become the latest player to praise the impact of the youngsters coming through the club’s academy.

In what has been a dark year in many respects for United, the progress of the youth teams and academy players have been a shining light.

This season has seen the rapid development of academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnachoin  the first team, while Omari Forson and Willy Kambwala have also become regular members of the squad.

In addition, last week saw the introduction of Ethan Wheatley against Sheffield United, who became the 250th academy graduate to represent the first team.

The form of the under-18 team has also been a cause for huge optimism, as they won the Premier league Cup against Manchester City and destroyed arch-rivals Liverpool 1-9 earlier this month.

Captain Bruno Fernandes has also already spoken on the need for the first team to create the right conditions for academy players to continue to flourish when they break into the squad. Speaking to the club’s official website, Antony has become the latest player to lavish praise on the young players breaking through.

“It’s certainly been an excellent season for Garnacho. He’s still a very young lad and full credit to him for his performances. I’m really happy for him and hope he continues doing what he knows how to do with a focused mind and continues helping us marking, making passes and running for the team.”

The 24 year old also reserved praise for Kambwala and Kobbie Mainoo.

Discussing the French defender’s recent game against Liverpool he stated, “I’m really pleased for them. Willy is really hard-working, always training hard and I’m delighted with the game he had against Liverpool. He had a great game and I congratulated him afterwards.”

“Kobbie has had a longer run of games,” Antony continued. “He’s a huge talent. I see so much talent there and I’m really happy for his performances.”

“I’ve been in the position of these young players – although I’m still only 24, I was also playing at their age as well. With their talent, together with focus, a supportive family and looking after themselves, things will happen naturally for them.”

The Brazilian winger scored at the weekend and certainly put in one of his better performances as of late. He will be hopeful that he and the young players can finish the season on a high with a victory in the FA Cup final in less than a month’s time.

Manchester United need to continue to help young players flourish according to captain, Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils have not had much to shout about this season and this was on full show once again yesterday afternoon as United failed to hold onto yet another lead as they conceded a late penalty against Burnley at Old Trafford.

The result ends United’s stumbling attempts to reach a Champions League spot for next season and leaves the Red Devils with an uphill task to secure Europa League football, with Newcastle breathing down their necks.

However, the side’s commitment to youth has shone through in this campaign and this was seen in Ethan Wheatley becoming the 250th academy graduate to make his debut for the first team last week.

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have also established themselves as two of the first names on the team sheet and despite their form dipping as of late due to the exhaustion of their first full season in the league, they have given hope to United fans in a season of darkness.

Captain Bruno Fernandes spoke to the club’s official website about the importance of looking after the younger players and said that it is the role of the first team to create the environment for the academy players to flourish when given the opportunity.

“At this club, you are used to having young players coming through the Academy and you’re used to the club buying young players that they feel can have a future at the club. You just mentioned two of them (Garnacho and Mainoo)”.

“They’ve been playing most and they’ve been doing well. They’ve been doing great things”.

“But, when the team is playing better, it’s going to create an even better place for them to [continue their] development and to be a better player. To be in a better place, being more confident, having more trust and playing even better”.

“Even if they’re doing well, I think there is always space for improvement for everyone, but obviously when the team improves, everyone else improves individually”.

However, Fernandes was not all praise, as he claimed that both players had bad moments and they need to develop greater consistency if they are to make it at the very top level.

“I think the team needs to step up in certain moments to also make them feel confident to have their bad moments, their bad games, or even to let them have less pressure on themselves to be the players that have to make the difference in certain moments”.

“I think they’ve been really good; they’ve been improving themselves. It’s just the first steps. They need to keep going, because obviously the expectations are going to grow, game by game, season by season”.

Fernandes has had his critics as captain of United but whether it be playing through the pain barrier, being the most creative player in the Premier League or inspiring the youngsters, the Portuguese has really stepped up the last few weeks of the season for his side.

Manchester United got back to winning ways as they beat Sheffield United 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Familiar defensive frailties and chaotic moments that have punctuated the season were as usual on show at Old Trafford but Bruno Fernandes, as he does time and time again, was the difference maker for United.

His two goals and one assist propelled United to victory and into sixth place in the league.

However, what the night will most likely be remembered most for was when Under 18 hero, Ethan Wheatley, came on as a substitute in the 89th minute of the match, to become the 250th Manchester United academy graduate to represent the club.

The Stockport-born youngster was fresh from his heroics on Tuesday night, when he scored a brace as United beat City 2-1 to win the under 18s Premier League cup.

The young striker also recently scored a hat-trick as the Red Devils U18s destroyed Liverpool 1-9.

The Old Trafford side have a rich history of blooding youngsters and in 1931, Tom Manley became the first academy product to represent the club.

93 years later, Wheatley became the 250th.

The club also boasts the proud of record of having an academy graduate be a part of every matchday squad since 1937, a record that no United manager would ever dare break.

It is fitting that the amazing milestone would be reached in this season, because in spite of the darkness of the current campaign, the team’s commitment to youth has been a shining light of hope that things will get better.

Academy products Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have been two of the side’s most influential players and even the much-maligned Scott McTominay has contributed with 10 goals from midfield, including the opening strike in the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.

From the days of Bobby Charlton and George Best, the Class of 92 of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and the newest generation, the Red Devils will always believe in three ideals.

Youth. Courage. Success.

Manchester United relinquished a three-goal lead against Championship side Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final and were on the verge of an embarrassing extra-time defeat but for VAR to save their blushes.

The Red Devils subsequently ended up prevailing 4-2 via penalty shoot-out to set up yet another Manchester Derby in the FA Cup final.

United were cruising in the game and it was manager Erik ten Hag’s substitutions which allowed The Sky Blues a route back into the game.

Kobbie Mainoo was controlling the midfield while Alejandro Garnacho was causing a lot of problems for the opposition defenders with his direct running.

All is not well between EtH and Garnacho

But the Dutchman felt the need to substitute both, and he brought on the hardly-used and rusty Christian Eriksen in the middle of the pitch, and the completely ineffective Antony up front.

Marcus Rashford was arguably one of the worst players out on the pitch but Garnacho was subbed off instead, almost like Ten Hag was sending out a statement to the academy graduate regarding his social media petulance after his substitution against Bournemouth in the last Premier League game.

The Argentine was far from impressed and fans were furious with the decision as well with many pundits blaming the Dutchman’s bizarre choices for causing the team’s embarrassing capitulation.

The Argentine international was shunted out to the right earlier on in the season after the manager had a falling out with Jadon Sancho and Antony failed even after repeated attempts.

Despite playing in a position which is outside his comfort zone, the FA Youth Cup winner with United has shown he can deliver under pressure and has notched nine goals and four assists this season.

Whether everything is alright between the pair behind-the-scenes remains unknown but Calciomercato have claimed Juventus are keenly watching the 19-year-old.

With United’s interest in Juventus defender Gleison Bremer increasing by the day, a possibility of a swap deal could emerge although it is wishful thinking on the Turin-based club’s part to think that United would sell their superstar-in-the-making.

“Juventus are on the hunt for wingers for next season, further confirmation of the probable arrival of Thiago Motta in place of Allegri. Giuntoli who, as demonstrated by the Alcaraz operation last January, is looking carefully at the English market.

Juve following Garnacho

“According to information gathered by Calciomercato.it, the Juventus football director is interested and has made some inquiries for Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United.

“The English club, which recently passed into the hands of Ineos boss Ratcliffe, is also aiming to strengthen the defence. The big target is a central defender of international standing, with Juve’s Bremer at the top of the list.”

If a rift is developing and based on Sunday’s result, Ten Hag’s future remains far from certain and he certainly could leave the club sooner than Garnacho. There is no way INEOS agree to a deal for Bremer which would see Garnacho go the other way.

The report clearly mentions that the Serie A giants are keeping an eye on how the pair get along. The new co-owners should also try and minimise the friction between the Dutch manager and the prodigious talent as this will lead to mure rumours and will unsettle the squad even further.

Manchester United and Coventry City will face each other later today in the second FA Cup semi-final.

The winner will take on Manchester City in the showpiece final on Saturday 25th May.

The Red Devils have suffered a nightmarish season to date but reaching a second successive FA Cup final against their cross-city rivals will add a little bit of gloss to the campaign.

The two sides have played each other 83 times in history with United coming out on top on 43 occasions.

Here are some of the big storylines that fans young and old will be discussing as they make their way down Wembley Way before the biggest game of the season to date for both sides.

How will Casemiro manage at centre back?

United have been cursed when it comes to injuries this season, especially in the defensive sector.

It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise as this point but United fans received the unwelcome news on Saturday evening that Willy Kambwala had picked up an injury and was unable to travel with the playing squad.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, manager Erik ten Hag claimed, “injuries are normal in football but not as many as we’ve had. So many injuries we’ve had in crucial positions”.

Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, called the news a “disaster” and stated that the club have now suffered over 60 different individual injuries this season.

Moreover, Ten Hag claimed that he had to trial Casemiro as a centre back in training due to the team’s shortage of central defenders.

Therefore, how the Brazilian deals with the role next to Harry Maguire will be pivotal in United’s chances this Sunday afternoon.

Casemiro has had a terrible season and by his own admission, has had “sleepless nights” trying to process his form. A solid display this afternoon will get him momentarily back in the good books of the fans.

However, starting at centre back will mean the Brazil international does not need to cover the huge amounts of ground he has been asked to do this season and this may allow him just to focus on defending on what is in front of him, which may play to his strengths.

How will Alejandro Garnacho respond after social media controversy?

Manchester United have rarely had an uneventful week this season, and this one has been no different. After their poor 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, it emerged that young star, Alejandro Garnacho, had liked a social media comment criticising his removal from the game at half-time.

However, in his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag revealed that the 19 year old had apologised and that the matter had been dealt with.

The young Argentine has been one of the few reasons for positivity this season and has transformed himself from a bench spark plug to arguably the team’s most important attacker.

If United are to make it to the final in May, he will surely play a key role in terrorising the Championship outfit’s defence.

United looking for first win against the Sky Blues since 2001

United and Coventry used to be a regular fixture in the English footballing calendar but the latter’s relegation from the Premier League has meant that they have only played once since 2001.

That was in September 2007 when Coventry shocked United and won 0-2 at Old Trafford in the League Cup. It was an even more surprising result considering Sir Alex Ferguson’s men would go on to win the League and Champions League double that season.

Therefore, the last time the Red Devils tasted victory against the side from the Coventry Building Society Arena was back in April 2001 when they ran out 4-2 winners at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Coventry have had a rollercoaster of a time in recent years as they descended all the way to League Two in 2017 but they have found a way to get themselves back into the Championship. They are currently in eighth in the second division and will hope to use their cup run as momentum to spring a promotion bid next season.
