Andre Onana 4- Not particularly at fault for any goal but looked jittery as a sweeper and doesn’t inspire much confidence otherwise.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 3- Olise had him on toast even when he wasn’t scoring. Probably his last season at the club.

Casemiro 1- Ill-advised slide tackle to let Olise run free for the first goal, incorrect positioning for the second, and robbed of the ball for the fourth. He’s not a centre-back, not in form, and probably not Premier League level anymore. A recipe for disaster.

Jonny Evans 3- It’s not his fault that he’s a 36-year-old presumably emergency signing being rushed back due to the absence of defenders but Palace’s agile forward line had him dazed.

Diogo Dalot 5- Tried to make things happen but the team looked like they had seen a ghost in Selhurst Park’s intense atmosphere and the malaise soon engulfed him.

Kobbie Mainoo 4- A chastening experience for the youngster who has emerged with credit even in United’s worst displays until this game.

Christian Eriksen 2- Repeat Casemiro’s lines about him minus him playing out of position. Looked like a man stuck on a busy street as cars buzzed around him.

Antony 1- He’s not it. A couple of goals and assists here or there doesn’t change the fact that he’s not starter-level for a club that United aspire to be. Arguably a bigger disaster than Casemiro since he was in his favoured position and his failures don’t directly affect the score.

Mason Mount 3- He can be a part of a well-functioning team, which United are not. Doesn’t have the game, or the ability to affect games like the player he replaced for this game, Bruno Fernandes.

Alejandro Garnacho 4- Tried some of his dribbles and won a free-kick at the edge of the area with one but that’s as good as it got for him.

Rasmus Hojlund 3- Fails with his back to goal and many other aspects of what makes a complete striker. In an ideal world, he’d be coming off the bench for an experienced striker with United already leading.

Substitutes:

Amrabat 3- Just the man you need when the team is trailing 3-0! Was never going to be the difference maker and it was remarkable that he came on before Amad.

Amad 5- Held back till the 80th minute and Palace were coasting in second gear by the time he came in and United were waiting for the final whistle.

Ethan Wheatley 6- Came on with Amad. Would be harsh to rate the teenager any lower in only his second senior appearance in this mess of a team.

Manager Erik ten Hag 1– How much can the manager be blamed for losing when he had just 12 senior outfielders available, including some rushed back? Not much but adapting to the team at hand is why they’re paid the big bucks and Ten Hag has consistently seemed unable to, or worse still, unwilling to adapt and this was more of the same.

Manchester United head to Selhurst Park with hopes of returning back to winning ways and inject some excitement into the concluding phase of their season.

With Champions League football out of sight and even Europa League qualification seeming unlikely, the majority of Man United fans can not wait for the league campaign to end. All the focus, for now, is on the FA Cup final and Ineos’ plans for the next term.

In that regard, some United fans may monitor the Crystal Palace outing closely for Michael Olise, who has reportedly attracted serious interest from Ineos ahead of the summer transfer window.

Many see Olise as a perfect right winger to replace Antony, who has endured a frustrating 2023/24 season. The outing in South London will also provide the Brazilian the opportunity to show he is capable of manning United’s right flank.

The 24-year-old registered his first Premier League goal of the season only last weekend, capitalising on Burnley’s mistake in the last quarter of the game to put United ahead at Old Trafford.

Apart from Antony’s goal, another rare sight was a Sonic the Hedgehog toy involvement during celebrations.

After calmly placing the ball past Arjianet Muric and into the back of the net, Antony celebrated the goal by tucking the ball underneath his shirt. He then went on to grab the stuffed toy from a photographer before holding it high.

Explaining the move, the former Ajax star told MUTV: “I’m really happy to be able to score and dedicate it to my wife and my daughter, who is on her way. She arrives in the world next month, in good health we hope.”

“The Sonic celebration is because my son really likes Sonic. I told my friend to bring Sonic in his bag in case I scored, as I had a feeling I was going to score. It was for me to get Sonic and dedicate it to my son as he is a big fan.”

The United number 21 has been so disappointing going forward this season that not many expected him to open his account against Burnley.

As such, one cannot help but applaud his confidence to actually prepare for such an intricate celebration beforehand.

The United faithful will hope Antony can build on this and play against Palace with even more confidence and swagger.

Manager Erik ten Hag’s tactics of trying to play a high-transition style has not worked at all with the Red Devils conceding chances galore every game irrespective of the opposition.

Injuries have not helped his cause while the players he has brought in have hardly impressed with new co-owners INEOS ready to ditch the Dutchman’s recruitment pattern and adopt their own methods.

The United boss has mainly focussed on bringing in Eredivisie talents and with the exception of Lisandro Martinez, who has been injured for the majority of the current campaign, none of the players have impressed.

Antony’s dismal second season

The biggest disappointment, by far, has been Antony who has looked well short of being a €95 million recruit with the winger hardly managing to beat his man nor show any real conviction going forward.

The Dutch boss initially blamed off-field controversies for his poor form but it is clear to see that he is not the best fit for a team like United who prefer to play on the counter with pace.

The Brazilian had notched eight goals and three assists in his debut campaign and the hope was that he would show more of his ability in his sophomore season.

However, the 24-year-old has only managed three goals and two assists and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is far from impressed with multiple reports stating that the 20-time English league champions are keen to move him on.

They had offered the Brazil international to clubs all around Europe and Saudi Arabia but as Italian journalist Rudy Galetti revealed, so far there have been no takers for the right winger.

United, on the other hand, want to strengthen their right and are eyeing Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise while Antony, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are all on the market.

United finding it hard to sell Antony

“Manchester United are still waiting for offers for Antony for a possible transfer in the summer: however, no concrete approach so far.

“Among the names on the list, Michael Olise is always considered a top target as a new winger. United are also open to evaluating bids for Greenwood,” Galetti wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

United’s transfer team had initially pegged Antony’s value to be just £25 million and overpaying for him will definitely cost INEOS in the long run.

Antony’s predictable skill-set means not too many elite clubs will come close to paying what United paid for the former Sao Paulo star and a parting should be the ideal course of action even if it is on a loss and Ten Hag doesn’t agree.

Manchester United starlet, Amad Diallo, has reportedly changed agents in advance of a likely busy summer at Old Trafford. Interestingly, it is the same agent as fellow United star, Alejandro Garnacho.

The 21 year old has once again struggled to get meaningful game time despite seeing an uptick in minutes over the last month.

The Ivorian enjoyed a Roy of the Rovers moment in March when he was put through on goal and calmly slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher to give United an epic FA Cup quarter final victory over Liverpool in the final seconds of the encounter.

Nonetheless, Diallo has still only played eight matches this season, with a combined minutes total of 233.

Frustratingly for the player, he has not made a start for the club since 2021 and the most time he has spent on the pitch has been the 45 minutes he was given against Bournemouth after replacing Alejandro Garnacho at half-time.

After playing so much last season where he was crucial in Sunderland’s fine efforts to be promoted back to the Premier League, a season of injury and lack of game time will no doubt be incredibly frustrating for the youngster.

This is probably compounded even more when it is considered how poor United’s wing play has been. Alejandro Garnacho has enjoyed a successful second season in the first team but has been erratic at times owing to only being 19 years old.

Antony and Marcus Rashford have been incredibly disappointing outside the rare moment of magic and Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho have been impressing abroad, on loan at Getafe and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Therefore, with numerous players potentially heading for the exit door this summer, Diallo could well be one of them.

The Daily Mail report that “Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo may be competing for a place on the wing at United, but Confidential understands that Amad has just signed with Garnacho’s agent Carlos Cambeiro.”

The paper goes on to state that “it is very much possible that Amad could fall into the bracket of transfer-listed players after being overlooked so often by manager Erik ten Hag during the 2023-24 campaign.”

No doubt his former side Sunderland would be heavily interested in the talented winger and they have previously been linked with trying to bring back the player on loan.

Amad has spoken in the past about how happy and proud he is to play for the club but it is unlikely he has infinite patience.

In addition, there have been some moments in the season when fans have speculated about the player’s happiness at the club. He deleted all his social media posts about the club earlier in the year but he has since stated it was for religious reasons, to focus on Ramadan.

The player also posted a rather cryptic social media post after United’s frustrating draw with Bournemouth referencing alleged player unrest with the manager.

Many have felt that Ten Hag has consistently shown favouritism to certain players, such as Antony and Rashford, in spite of their poor form, which has left Amad on the outside looking in.

What is clear is that the more time passes, the longer his career will stagnate and decisive action must be taken on his part or that of the club. Perhaps the changing of agents is a clear sign that the Ivorian has accepted he will never get the chances he is looking for at Old Trafford.
