Manchester United loanee Facundo Pellistri endured a frustrating evening as his Granada side lost out 3-0 against fellow Andalusians, Sevilla.

The match was also notable for United fans as Hannibal Mejbri made a rare six-minute cameo off the bench for Sevilla. The two players briefly shared the pitch before Pellistri was subbed off in the 87th minute.

Los Nazaríes have already been relegated in what has been a poor season and looked second-best all evening against an improving Sevilla side.

Goals from Marcos Acuña, Youssef En-Neysri and Dodi Lukebakio secured the win as the home side had the lion’s share of possession with 61%.

The home side was also able to dominate in terms of shots as they had 11 shots on goal in comparison to Granada’s eight.

Pellistri’s side rarely truly threatened as they only managed one shot on target in the whole match.

The Uruguay international was given a Sofascore rating of 6.6 for his night’s work at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

The United loanee struggled to get involved as he only had 29 touches of the ball and he could only complete seven out of an attempted 12 passes for an accuracy of 58%.

The winger is usually the spark plug of the Granada attack, so the fact he was so rarely involved in the game suggests the uphill task his side faced.

He was able to complete one key pass in the game but his two crosses failed to find their intended target.

Pellistri was unable to have any sort of shot on goal and was successful in his solitary dribble attempt of the match.

He was also quite wasteful with the ball, losing possession 13 times in the game.

Defensive work has always been a part of the game he has embraced and this was on show today as the Uruguay international made one clearance and won six out of his 11 ground duels.

Granada have four more games of their La Liga season to try and impress before they must return to the second division. From Pellistri’s perspective, he will look at the games as a chance to prove his worth in regard to another attempt to break into the United first team in the pre-season tour or secure a loan or permanent sale elsewhere.

Quite early on in the campaign, the Dutchman had a falling out with Jadon Sancho after he called out the England international for his below-par training displays.

The former Manchester City academy graduate was not one to take things lying down and retaliated via a social media statement while his camp insinuated that the manager handed out preferential treatment to Antony.

Speaking of the Brazilian, off-field controversies hindered his form and with only three goals this season, the former Ajax star is already staring at an early exit from the club who decided to pay a whopping €95 million for his services.

Pellistri’s difficult United stint

The Dutch manager turned to Facundo Pellistri, who has consistently shone for his national side. However, when starting games, the Uruguayan always looked like a raw talent in need of further nurturing.

With United crashing out of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup, minutes were hard to come by and the manager decided to send plenty of his young talents out on loan.

Pellistri ended up moving to relegation-threatened Granada, where he began with a bang with a goal and assist against heavyweights Barcelona.

The 22-year-old also scored in his team’s most recent win against Osasuna and he now has two goals and as many assists for his loan outfit.

The player’s agent has revealed in the past that if Ten Hag remains as manager, Pellistri would end up leaving and the club are also open to that proposal.

There have been offers from Europe as well as South America for the winger but the player, in an interview with Uruguayan radio station Sport 890, revealed that his parent club have been in touch and he has been informed that he will have to return to Manchester for pre-season.

“I talk constantly with Manchester United. After each game we exchange (messages). I’m not sure what I’m going to do after La Liga ends. What I am clear about is that I’m going to have to do the pre-season with Manchester.”

Summer exit likely

The former Penarol star admitted that donning the famed red jersey has been a surreal experience but he needs more minutes moving forward and an exit is likely.

“The whole time I was in Manchester was incredible. The experiences I had, I shared with the best players in the world and I was able to play many important games. Today, I am in a stage of looking for more minutes, I am very happy with the opportunity.

“Although I had minutes at Manchester United, it was not the amount I would like given the football moment I was in. I am very happy for the minutes I played here (in Spain). A player always wants to play. Many times one does not put oneself into the manager’s decisions, who has to think about many more things.”

With Alejandro Garnacho shining out on the right wing and with Amad Diallo starting to impress and with Omari Forson coming up, there is hardly any room for the Uruguay international.

Ever since his €8.50 million move back in 2020, Pellistri has found chances hard to come by, with the winger managing only 24 appearances in 4 years with only four of them coming from the start.

Pellistri’s deal ends in 2025 and most likely, he will be sold for a decent profit in the upcoming summer window.

Granada headed into the match full of confidence following their previous win against Alaves before they went on to earn a valuable point vs. Athletic Club.

Jose Ramon Sandoval’s men took advantage of their momentum and successfully sunk Osasuna in a 3-0 victory on Sunday at Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes.

Alongside Pellistri, Myrto Uzuni and Lucas Boye also grabbed goals to clinch the points for Granada.

Pellistri shed first blood at the half-hour mark in spectacular fashion. The Uruguayan, who started on his favoured right side of a 4-4-2 formation, positioned himself well to receive a pass just inside the Osasuna box.

He took a sublime touch to get past his marker and create some shooting space for himself before firing a powerful effort with his right foot into the roof of Sergio Herrera’s net.

Pellistri’s strike set the tone for Granada, who despite having significantly less possession than their opponents, proved clinical as they made their goalscoring chances account.

The United loanee was on the pitch for 80 minutes before being taken off and replaced by Gonzalo Villar.

Pellistri had 22 touches of the ball to his name and successfully delivered nine of the 12 total passes he attempted. He had a pass completion rate of 75%.

The South American winger tried to find a Granada teammate with one cross but he didn’t hit his mark on that occasion.

The 22-year-old had two total shots to his name – the goal he scored and another which was off-target and didn’t require the Osasuna goalkeeper to swing into action.

An area of his play in which Pellistri was very poor was defensively. He won none of the seven ground duels he delved into and also none of the two aerial contests he was required to contest.

Pellistri also failed to make an interception or put in a successful tackle. He managed just one clearance.

Hannibal Mejbri and Facundo Pellistri had got a few chances in the first half of the campaign but still looked like they were not ready for the step-up.

Amid the Dutchman’s tussle with Jadon Sancho and Antony’s poor form, there was a gaping hole on the right and the former Ajax coach turned to the Uruguayan on 14 occasions, with only three coming from the start.

The pacey right winger looked raw and thus, it was decided that a move away makes the most sense and he was loaned out to Granada in Spain.

Pellistri’s future

The 22-year-old has made nine appearances for the struggling side so far, scoring once and providing two assists with his best display coming against Barcelona.

He became the youngest player in La Liga to grab an assist and score a goal in the same game away to Barcelona since Samuel Eto’o in April 2000.

Despite being a regular for the Uruguay national team, the former Penarol youngster has not managed to breakthrough at Old Trafford and has largely spent time out on loan, initially at Alaves and now Granada.

His treatment in Manchester has not impressed his agent and there have been multiple rumours linking the winger with an exit over the course of the last few seasons.

Plenty of South American clubs remain interested in Pellistri and according to Boca Noticias, Boca Juniors are planning yet another approach for the United star in the summer.

Boca president and former Argentine legend Juan Roman Riquelme is hellbent on clinching the Copa Sudamericana in the future and in that regard, he wants to bring Pellistri to the club whose attack is currently led by another former United man.

Edinson Cavani is currently leading the line for the team from La Bombonera and the addition of his pacey compatriot could add another dimension to the Boca attack.

The report mentions Pellistri as being Riquelme’s “greatest current desire” but as of now, they are only thinking of a loan deal.

Boca want Pellistri

“If Boca shows formal interest, I am going to make the negotiations so that this (move) can happen. I believe that Boca can greatly enhance Facu, and vice versa,” the player’s agent was quoted as saying.

Pellistri’s current market value is €10 million and with United paying €8.50 million for the Uruguayan back in 2020, the feeling was that the 20-time English league champions would sell him for a large profit considering his potential and young age.

However, Boca are prepared for a permanent acquisition should United not ask for too much. It will be interesting to see how co-owners INEOS see this. They need to sell well in order to buy and are planning a summer clearout.

And a player who has only managed four starts in as many years is clearly not in the manager’s plans and an exit looks likely.

Since then, Pellistri and his teammates have endured a run of eight defeats and three draws in their past 11 games. Before beating Alaves, the side had lost five matches on the bounce.

However, the win has done very little to improve Granada’s chances of beating the drop and avoiding relegation.

The Spanish outfit remain in 19th place in La Liga standings with 17 points gained after 31 matches played. They’re currently 11 points away from safety and it’s looking very likely that they will be dumped into the country’s second division.

Pellistri started on his favoured right side of  Jose Ramon Sandoval’s 4-4-2 formation.

During the time he was on the pitch, the United loanee managed 29 touches of the ball. He attempted only nine passes, with five of them finding his teammates. He had a personal pass completion rate of 56%.

The United loanee tried to deliver one long ball and one cross. He didn’t find his intended target on either occasion.

He didn’t register any shot whatsoever at Antonio Sivera’s goal.

The Uruguayan embarked on one dribble, which he completed successfully.

Pellistri did well defensively – even in a United shirt, the forward’s work rate is something that would never be questioned.

He delved into 12 ground duels and won six of them. Aerially, he was required to contest five challenges. He came out on top twice.

The 22-year-old lost possession of the ball eight times and committed two fouls.

Pellistri also made one clearance and as many interceptions. He registered two tackles.

Facundo Pellistri and Granada suffered yet another loss despite dominating against Valencia on Thursday night.

The Andalusians had 13 shots on goal to Valencia’s six and enjoyed an impressive 58% of the ball. However, they failed to take their early chances and the side from the Mestalla punished them in the 77th minute of play when Andre Almeida fired in from the edge of the box to give the ‘Che victory.

The Uruguay international was heavily involved in the first half when his side were on top from an attacking perspective.

His first major involvement arrived in the 18th minute when he dribbled past three players on the right wing and laid the ball off to Gerard Gumbau, whose thunderbolt of a strike cannoned off the top of the crossbar.

The United player would be involved shortly after in the 27th minute when he combined with his teammates cleverly down the right hand side again and eventually cut inside on his weaker left foot but the shot was straight down the throat of Valencia’s keeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Sofascore gave the winger a rating of 6.8 for his night’s work and he played the full 90 minutes as his side searched in vain for an equaliser.

As mentioned previously, the 22 year old was well involved and had 50 touches of the ball.

He was accurate with his passing as he made 21 of his 26 attempts, at a success rate of 81%. His passing was also purposeful as he was able to contribute three key passes during the game. The winger then had the aforementioned shot on target and had another effort blocked by the Valencian defence.

Pellistri was not so effective with his crossing however as only 25% of his crosses met their intended target. He probably lost the ball more than he should as he was dispossessed 16 times but being a winger who runs at people, losing the ball is always a risk of that style of play, as he tries to make things happen for his side.

He was also able to contribute defensively, making two tackles in the match.

Next up for Pellistri and Granada is another home match against Alaves on Sunday 19th April. However with their terrible goal difference, the southern Spanish side are effectively 15 points from safety with only 24 left to play for.

Barring a major miracle, los Nazaríes look to be staring down the barrel of relegation once more.

Manchester United are set for a busy summer with INEOS taking control of thier first transfer market at the club.

Incomings and outgoings are expected, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s consortium hoping to offload some off the fringe players in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

As reported by The Mirror, Facundo Pellistri looks to be one that will fall into that category with the 22-year-old struggling to make an impact at Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan started the season at United but is now on loan at La Liga side Granada after failing to impress Ten Hag.

Given United’s lack of attacking threat, the fact Pellistri was allowed to leave tells a damning tale of his current standing in the squad.

The winger’s time at United hasn’t been easy since joining for a fee of £7.65million from Primera División side Penarol in October 2020.

This is Pellistri’s third loan spell and he has only registered 24 first-team appearances for United.

He is yet to get off the mark in terms of goals at Old Trafford and has only managed two assists, stats that look likely to be his final figures at the club.

However, he looks much more comfortable in the slower pace of Spanish football and has played well at times for Granada.

A standout performance in the Nou Camp in February, which included a goal and an assist, provided a reminder of his potential.

Pellistri will be disappointed with how things have panned out at United, particularly after being promised he would go “straight into the first team”, according to Penarol secretary Evaristo Gonzalez.

United will hope to recoup the majority of the fee paid for the player four years ago, who could still go onto have a notable career away from Old Trafford.
