Erik ten Hag might stay or go after the season but none of that should save the players from a clearout as well.

The crop of players, including some which have disappointed under multiple managers, have long been rewarded with expensive contracts and renewals without consistent performances meriting the same.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ first order of business will be to engineer the squad clearout for financial reasons as well.

To that tune, Football Insider reports that United have identified four players who will top that list.

These four will be shifted urgently by United which means they might be willing to even take losses on these sales just to get rid.

The players are Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Chrisitan Eriksen, and Jonny Evans.

Two of the names are obvious ones on the list- Varane’s contract expires in the summer so more than “selling” him, United are likely to just not activate the option in his contract and let him leave.

Evans is also on a one-year contract and while he has been a pleasant surprise, his age and inevitable decline dictate that United look for better, more long-term options to invest in.

Casemiro has just had the worst game of his United career away at Palace and the calls for his departure are deafening but he’ll be the hardest to shift.

United handed him a five-year contract worth nearly £350k/week in 2022 and except for Middle-East, nobody looks capable of taking that off United’s books.

Therefore, that will be a sale where United will undoubtedly make a huge loss and hopefully, the new regime will learn their lesson first up by cleaning up a Glazer mistake.

Eriksen might be a case where United can get a fee if they are smart. The Dane looks past it playing in United’s dysfunctional system but his ball-playing and set-piece abilities might be valued by a team in the top-five leagues.

Considering he joined as a free transfer, any income from his sale will be a big bonus.

The INEOS regime is keen to clear up the wages by finally holding high-earners accountable and with Martial’s exit all but sealed, these exits will free up more nearly a million/week in wages alone.

Manchester United put in an horrendous display which saw them hammered 4-0 by 14th placed Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last night.

United fans have been no stranger to humiliation and darkness this season but the latest spanking must certainly be up there as one of the worst.

The team showed no sign of life as Palace launched raid after raid at United’s beleaguered back four and had no answer for any of the questions posed by the impressive Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze.

Despite a poor performance from arguably every United player on the pitch, Casemiro was once again singled out for his particularly dismal showing.

In fairness, the Brazilian has had to fill in the last few games at centre back due to the ridiculous injury crisis the Red Devils are suffering, but still, a player of his experience should not be being as exposed as he so frequently has been all season.

True to form, the first and third goals yesterday could certainly see a lot of blame attached to the former Real Madrid star.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp already highlighted the midfielder’s penchant to jump into tackles instead of chasing back against Bournemouth last month. But this time, it was former United man Paul Scholes’ turn to take aim at the Brazilian.

Speaking to Premier League Productions Scholes tore into Erik ten Hag’s team’s set up: “A very upsetting and sad performance. Even though there are a lot of players out who would probably start in the team. Five or six probably of the main ones. But it felt like one team had been coached and set up how to play. And one team that was so easy to play against that it’s untrue.”

The legendary midfielder was clearly at pains to criticise another legend of the game but he then laid into Casemiro’s role in the nightmarish match.

“There are still some good players in that Man United team and playing out on that pitch. You think of the likes of Casemiro. He’s tough to have a go at. What a player he has been over the years, but that was tough to watch, he was on his backside most of the time. People like Christian Eriksen as well. That physicality in the middle of the pitch has gone.”

“I reckon that could have happened four or five times where Casemiro sits down and somebody skips past him. The lads not a centre-halve. It’s tough to have a bit of a pop at him. He has done so much for the game. A fantastic footballer. It’s difficult watching a few of these actually because I do feel they are towards the end. They shouldn’t be at a club of this stature really.”

It is certainly a sad ending for such a modern day legend of the game, a man who won has won five Champions League trophies and was a vital cog in every single one.

The Brazilian was also terrific in his first season at Old Trafford and scored the vital opening goal in the Carabao Cup final, which United would go on to win 2-0 against Newcastle United, delivering the club’s first trophy in six years.

However, this season has seen a sharp decline which will see Casemiro almost certainly shipped out to clear up wage space and bring in younger, hungrier midfield talent better equipped to deal with the rigours of Premier League football.

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has indicated that he and his teammates just had an “off-day” and that’s probably why they were beaten by Crystal Palace in such humiliating fashion.

United were battered 4-0 by Oliver Glasner’s men at Selhurst Park, in what was their 13th Premier League defeat of the season.

A brace from Michael Olise and goals in either half of proceedings from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell were enough to sink United and pile further misery on Erik ten Hag and his players.

The result has left the Red Devils in eighth place in the top flight with three games left to play.

At the moment, Europa Conference League qualification seems like the most likely outcome for United, who only have themselves to blame.

Against the Eagles, the players were shambolic and very few of them – if any – turned up. Palace were first to everything and capitalised on United’s fragile mentality to exert their dominance and ultimately grab the win.

After the final whistle, Eriksen spoke to BBC and gave his verdict on the team’s display and the result.

The Dane said, “A big disappointment. We just had an off-day and we weren’t in it.”

“It is what it is. We can’t really change the injury things. We have to do what we can on the pitch to change it. Today it didn’t matter who we played. Everyone could have done better.”

Eriksen added, “I don’t know what the conclusion is for how it went. We weren’t good enough.”

“We tried to do what we could but we were not good enough. We’ll take the blame as players.”

It doesn’t get easier for United. Up next is title challengers Arsenal this weekend and then Newcastle before facing Brighton on the final day of the season. The 20-time English champions then round off their campaign by making their way to Wembley to take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Manchester United hit a new low this season, slumping to a devastating 4-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday night.

While a top-four Premier League finish may already have been out of reach, it’s now uncertain whether United will manage to qualify for Europe at all this season. The team is now in eighth place, losing ground to Newcastle United and Chelsea.

Despite retaining 57% possession, United were unable to show any attacking threat on the night, taking just seven shots, with two hitting the target.

Ultimately, it was the midfield that let United down, with Christian Eriksen struggling to make any positive impact on the match.

Taking just one shot that was blocked, Eriksen posed little to no attacking threat. With Bruno Fernandes absent through injury, it was up to Eriksen to take United’s free kicks on the night.

Unfortunately, he was largely unable to make an impact from set pieces, sending a shot over the wall but also over the crossbar before the half-time break.

In the second half, the Danish midfielder produced a promising free kick, crossing the ball to Casemiro whose header hit the post. While he managed to score the rebound, the goal was ruled offside.

Eriksen’s short-range passing was adequate, with the 32 year old completing 45 of his 55 passes for an 82% passing accuracy.

He also managed to complete all three of his attempted crosses, while four of his eight long balls found their target. The area where Eriksen struggled, however, was in defence.

Winning none of his three ground duels, Eriksen’s poor physicality came back to haunt him. He lost possession on 14 occasions while proving unable to make a single tackle.

Although he managed to block a shot, this one success would not be enough to overshadow his flaws.

Eriksen’s biggest slip-up of the game came in the 12th minute. As Michael Olise made himself available for a throw-in, Eriksen, who should have been marking him, allowed the Palace winger far too much free space. As a result, when Eriksen finally realised his error, Olise was away, dribbling past Casemiro and thumping the ball past Andre Onana to hand Palace their opening goal of the match.

He was also unable to complete a single dribble throughout the encounter.

Ultimately, Eriksen showed a severe lack of energy during his performance. Going forward, it appears as if the Dane may have a limited role in United’s future should he be unable to improve his stamina.

]]>

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen claims that he is happy at the club, despite his lack of game time this season.

The Dane moved to Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer of 2022 and was a regular in United’s midfield last year, playing 44 times in all competitions. However, this season has been an entirely different story.

The midfielder has only played 24 time, frequently relegated to the bench. Whilst Eriksen has started the last two games due to injury to Scott McTominay and Casemiro having to fill in at centre back, it is not a vote of confidence from Erik ten Hag.

The extent of the Dane’s lack of playing time can be seen in the fact from the 14th of January until the 13th of April he only made it off the bench once in the Premier League, playing 37 minutes in a 1-2 home defeat to Fulham in February.

It had been reported that as a result, Eriksen was naturally unhappy with his playing time and wanted out of the club. However, Ten Hag soon quashed such rumours, suggesting it was just “supporter talk”.

In a later interview, the Dutchman went on to explain that his decrease in minutes were down to the spectacular rise to prominence of Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park.

The Dane has been linked to moves to Turkey and his former side, Ajax.

However, this may not be the plans of the 32 year old. Whilst admitting his future is far from settled he outlined his happiness to be at club like Manchester United in a recent interview with ViaPlay (via Tipsbladet).

When asked about his future at the club beyond the summer he claimed, “I do not know. I still have a year left on the United contract, so for now, I’m still a United player. So what will happen this summer, I don’t know.”

“But I am incredibly happy to be here. It’s a great club and I feel good, so we’ll see what happens. But as I said, I have one year left.”

Interestingly, Eriksen may be happy to play the role of bit part player at the club or he may be hoping that with INEOS’ intention to implement a more possession based style, he will have more opportunities next season to show his worth as he is poorly equipped to deal with the transition football Ten Hag has demanded from his side this year.

Furthermore, with the likes of Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat already seemingly having one foot out the door of the club, the Dane may figure there will be more opportunities in midfield for him next campaign.

Christian Eriksen has criticised Manchester United’s late game decisions once again this season.

The Dane was starting two consecutive matches for the first time in months and tried in vain to be the creative spark that gave the Red Devils the victory.

A 1-1 draw with Burnley has almost sealed United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League next year and they have a real fight on their hands to even keep the Europa League place with Newcastle snapping at their heels behind.

Tough looking fixtures away to Crystal Palace and Brighton, as well as home fixtures against the Magpies and Arsenal hardly scream 12 points either.

Speaking to MUTV (via The Manchester Evening News) after the game, Eriksen reflected on his side’s and his own poor decisions in the match.

“We had the three points in our hands going into the last minutes of ordinary time. We should be able to keep a clean sheet and get the win”.

“I still think there could be some bits that could be better [in my own performance]. I made a few decisions that could be better, putting my teammate or myself in a better area around the pitch”.

When asked about how he felt after playing for the first time consecutively for many months he retorted, “I’m trying to do my best and like you said, I haven’t had as much game time. When you’re playing, you have to do your best and that’s what I’m trying to do”.

The Denmark international was then asked about the nine day break that awaits this United side when they are not in action now until Monday 6th May.

Eriksen claimed it would be “full focus” on recovery. “First of all, it’s going to be weird because it’s going to be a long week without games, but hopefully it’s going to make everyone ready and fit for the game at Palace”.

“Some days off, some training, get your mental and physical ready and go again. You love playing games, it’s what you always want to do, and every day, so it’s different”.

“But sometimes, of course, you need a bit of a rest to recover and prepare for the next game and it depends on what the manager is going to do in training sessions”.

With Scott McTominay picking up an injury, and United’s centre back injury crisis still in full swing, it is possible that the former Tottenham man will continue to get some rare chances to impress Erik ten Hag as we enter the final month of a long and gruelling season.

Manchester United welcome Sheffield United to Old Trafford on Wednesday in a game they will be expected to win and get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure to save his position at the club after four league games without victory which has meant the club has no hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Despite reaching the FA Cup final at the weekend, another alarming meltdown to allow Coventry to score thrice and force the game into a penalty shootout has done little to brighten the mood in Manchester.

However, Wednesday’s game should give United a chance to flex their muscles with the visitors a certainty for relegation, sitting bottom of the league and on course to concede over 100 goals.

Chris Wilder’s men have shipped 88 goals so far with six games remaining and United, however depleted, should have enough for a comfortable night under the lights at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ten Hag is sweating on the fitness of some key players once more but Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garancho and Antony are likely to start up front and have enough quality to put the game to bed.

There should be little need for overly creative tactics in front of home support, getting the ball to the front three in dangerous areas should produce chances aplenty.

Hojlund will be desperate to get back on the scoresheet after another barren run since returning from injury and his desire will be key to United winning the game.

The young Dane has suffered an up-and-down first season in Manchester but with Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes likely to start behind him, the quality to pick Sheffield’s lock is there.

Fernandes and Eriksen both possess outstanding quality on the ball and with the basement side likely to sit deep, the duo will be tasked with getting the ball into dangerous areas for Hojlund.

Hojlund is dangerous in the air, a skill that has been criminally underused this season and clipped balls into his space will allow him to use his physical presence and grab a goal or two.

Equally, United’s most consistent attacker this season, Garnacho, is always eager to impress and will provide a threat on the left hand side with his pace and direct running.

The patched up back four will be expected to cope a lot better than they did at Wembley as United inexplicably nearly threw away a cup final ticket, with tonight’s opponents arguably less armed than Coventry were on Sunday.

Should United concentrate and apply themselves properly, they should be in for a comfortable enough evening but, as seen multiple times this campaign, that seems to be alot easier said than done for this group of players.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is expected to make alterations in the middle of the park after it was revealed that the injury crisis at the club has gone from bad to worse.

In the last two Premier League games, the Dutchman was forced to select academy youngster Willy Kambwala at the back after four out his five senior centre-back options all suffered injuries.

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both joined Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof on the sidelines and Harry Maguire was the only remaining senior option at Ten Hag’s disposal.

The young Frenchman has now joined his experienced colleagues in the treatment room which could force the manager to play Casemiro alongside Maguire.

Injury concerns ahead of Wembley

Both Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount are also injured and this could mean a return to the starting lineup for Christian Eriksen.

The Dane last started a game back in January while his previous appearance came off the bench against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final humdinger.

The 32-year-old has managed a grand total of 135 minutes so far in 2024 while starting only 11 games this campaign as opposed to 32 games last term.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star had made it clear to Ten Hag that he was far from impressed with his lack of minutes while also showcasing his talents on the international stage during the last international break.

There have been multiple rumours linking him with an exit with the likes of Brentford, Galatasaray, Ajax and Saudi Arabian clubs chasing his signature.

When asked about his decreased utilisation of the Denmark international, Ten Hag pointed out that the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo has led to reduced minutes for Eriksen.

“I think that [Kobbie Mainoo’s progress] is the main reason. He [Kobbie] was so important for us, he is playing in that six/eight role, [to] bring creation to the team, bring composure, in our possession game, to the team.

“I think that is the main reason why Christian has less minutes than last season,” the former Ajax coach said during the pre-match press conference.

EtH on Eriksen

It is also true that the former Inter Milan man has lost more than a yard of pace and this season, he has struggled to come to terms with the frenetic pace of the English game.

Mainoo, on the other hand, has looked like a superstar and is already a sure-shot starter in every game.

But with no Amrabat, Mount and Casemiro, Eriksen might finally get an opportunity against Coventry City at Wembley on Sunday and he could partner the academy graduate from the start.

And against a team who could defend in a low block, the Dane’s ethereal passing could be just the thing needed to break it down. The Red Devils will be eyeing back-to-back FA Cup final appearances and Eriksen could be about to play a pivotal role.

In his first season, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was quick to realise he needed quality in the middle of the park and brought in Christian Eriksen on a free while paying big money for Casemiro.

The duo were a key reason behind United’s successful Carabao Cup campaign with the Red Devils finishing third and therefore qualifying for the Champions League.

This season, however, the duo have not worked as a partnership due to the Dutchman’s insistence on playing a high-transition style.

This requires high energy and speed, both attributes the Dane does not have in him anymore. Neither does the Brazilian but with Sofyan Amnrabat’s disastrous loan stint, the manager has no other option but to keep playing the former Real Madrid superstar.

Eriksen’s poor second season

As for the Denmark international, he last started a game back in January while he has managed a grand total of 135 minutes so far in 2024.

With the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, Ten Hag has hardly turned to the 32-year-old, who had started 32 games last term and only 11 games this campaign.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has made his displeasure known to the manager and even put on a show during the international break but that has not been enough to change his coach’s mind.

Eriksen’s United contract is valid until 2025 but has been linked with a summer move away with Ajax, Brentford and Saudi Arabian clubs chasing his signature.

The former Inter Milan star has no interest in a move to the Middle East and as per Fotomac, Galatasaray are set to come back for the classy midfielder during the summer window.

The Turkish giants had attempted to sign the Danish star in January but United refused. Now there are positive signs that an agreement can be reached in the summer.

Gala currently have Tanguy Ndombele on loan in their ranks and they have no plans of signing him permanently with coach Okan Buruk insistent on the Dane.

The current Süper Lig leaders plan to meet with the Red Devils and Eriksen’s entourage to thrash out a deal in the coming days.

Gala back in for Eriksen

“The Yellow Reds want to acquire Christian Eriksen, who plays for Manchester United, instead of the French star. Cimbom, who had previously contacted Manchester United for the Danish central midfielder and received positive signals, wants to make a move to complete the transfer this time.

“Yellow Red managers will sit down with both the English club and the 32-year-old football player’s agent in the coming days. United had given the message that it would make it easier for Eriksen, who has a contract for another year.”

Eriksen’s passing remains ethereal and while his pace has let him down, playing in Turkey will suit him and he is bound to dominate.

But whether he wants to move to Turkey with his family at this stage of his career remains a doubt. It will be interesting to see what Eriksen decides at the conclusion of the current campaign.

New Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly reached out to Barcelona to offer them four stars as INEOS’ summer overhaul starts to take shape.

The summer transfer window is shaping up to be a crucial one for United, who have endured a very underwhelming and disappointing campaign.

The Red Devils are set to miss out on Champions League football and are firmly in the midst of a tough battle to finish within the Europa League places. At the moment, the FA Cup represents the side’s only chance of lifting some form of silverware and somewhat restoring a bit of the pride that has already been lost.

While most of the focus will undoubtedly be on incoming and new faces as Ratcliffe and INEOS seek to bolster the squad, outgoings are equally important. A number of players on United’s payroll continue to be linked with exits.

According to Spanish publication Nacional via Football365, there are four players in particular that Ratcliffe wants to get rid of and has already set the wheels in motion to facilitate their respective departures – Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia.

It’s understood that Barcelona have “received the call” from the Oldham-born billionaire, who has expressed a desire to part ways with Casemiro, Varane, Eriksen and Malacia.

Ratcliffe spoke to Barca chief Deco and gave the Catalan giants “the opportunity to sign all of them” for a”reasonable price.”

United forked out a combined £124m to secure the services of Varane, Casemiro, Malacia and Eriksen. The latter three were brought in by Ten Hag, with Varane the only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recruit between them.

The report notes that the new United co-owner wants to make room on the wage bill and views the sale of the four players as a way to achieve this objective.

It however seems difficult for the Blaugrana to sign any of the four United stars, especially Varane and Casemiro, who have close ties to arch-rivals Real Madrid. The pair enjoyed an extremely successful spell at the Santiago Bernabeu before eventually making the switch to England.

It’s easy to see why United could be open to a parting of ways with Casemiro, Varane, Eriksen and Malacia.

Casemiro has demonstrated a sharp decline in performances this season and appears to have lost a yard or two of space. For weeks now, he has been a liability to the team and his continued selection in Ten Hag’s starting XI remains puzzling. The Brazilian and Varane represent two of United’s highest earners and at 32 and 30 respectively, it doesn’t make much sense to keep them around any longer. Both have also proven to be quite injury-prone.

Eriksen on the other hand lost his place in the team following the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo. The Dane has made no secret of his displeasure with his reduced playing time and with Mason Mount also lurking in the background and United plotting the addition of more midfielders, his opportunities are likely to become even more limited. Like Casemiro and Varane, he is also on the wrong end of his career.

Meanwhile, there are question marks over Malacia and his fitness. The Netherlands international hasn’t played even a single minute of competitive action this term due to injuries. His recovery has been hit by multiple setbacks and it’s unclear whether he’ll be back to top shape as soon as required. United are also thought to be in the market for a new,  younger left-back.
