Manchester United’s 2023-2024 season is in danger of going down as one of the worst in the club’s recent history.

The Red Devils lie in sixth place in the league, 11 points off teams in the Champions League places and are in serious danger of being overtaken by both West Ham and Newcastle. An eighth place finish would represent the club’s worst league finish since 1990, when they finished 13th but did manage to win the FA Cup – a potentially startling symmetry to this season.

The United defence has been incredibly suspect all season as they shipped 15 goals in just six Champions League group games, crashing out in last place in December. What’s more, no team in Europe’s top five leagues has faced more shots on goal than the Red Devils in 2024.

Of course, the players and manager need to have a long hard look in the mirror when this season is done and dusted, but there is another major reason behind this season’s pathetic displays – a scarcely believable list of absentees through injury, especially in defence.

Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw have missed the majority of the season and they are arguably the club’s two most valuable defenders, not just in defending but also in Erik ten Hag’s build up play.

In fact, all the backline has been missing at some point during the season, resulting in an incredible 31 different back four combinations during the season. This was highlighted by Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire being the only two fit centre backs to play in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

When analysing the names, it can be seen that the only real consistent in the defensive line as of late has been Diogo Dalot and perhaps it is no surprise that he has been enjoying arguably the best season of his career, highlighted by his fine display versus Liverpool at the weekend.

The Portuguese international has played 26 times in 31 Premier League matches. However, nobody else has been able to play for any considerable stretch of time in the first eleven.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has played 13 times, Raphael Varane 16, Victor Lindelof 11, Harry Maguire 14 times and even the 36 year old Jonny Evans has started nine times and been subbed on many more. This means that many players have had decent game time, but really no central defender has been able to consolidate their place in the team, never mind having two continuously available to form an actual partnership.

The left back is the most ridiculous situation where Tyrell Malacia has not played all season and Shaw has only played 11 matches with a few of them being in the centre back position.

In total, there have been six different left backs used this season with only two of them being recognised left full backs, Shaw and Sergio Reguilon. Sofyan Amrabat, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot have all had to deputise in the unfamiliar role.

Ten Hag perplexed fans once again during his post-match press conference when he claimed his side played very well despite dominated in terms of shots and possession against their arch-rivals.

However, one comment he made did make a whole lot of sense. Without being able to field anything close to a consistent back four, it is normal that they players can’t build up routines or patterns to understand one another.

There is much talk about the pursuit of sporting directors and the upcoming transfer window but perhaps the most important piece of business INEOS carry out will be connected to the ongoing investigation of the massive failings of the current medical team employed at Old Trafford.

It is vital to not let any player or manager off the hook but at the same time it is worth considering, could any team actually be successful defensively under such ridiculous circumstances?

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is enduring a difficult moment not only in terms of results on the pitch but also when it comes to selecting a stable XI for each game.

The injury curse seems to have returned with a vengeance with the defence being the worst affected. The situation is so grim that the Dutchman is currently without a specialist left-back.

Luke Shaw could be out for the season while Tyrell Malacia is yet to return from an injury that has kept him out since pre-season. Alvaro Fernandez was deemed to be not quite ready for the step-up.

In the last few games, Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat have been taking turns playing in that position and to put it mildly, they have struggled.

The same problem was present at the start of the campaign as well and that is when the club decided to bring in Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.

Reguilon’s loan spell

The Spaniard made 12 appearances in all competitions including seven starts and while he was defensively suspect at times, the crowd took a liking to his all-action approach.

In an interview with The Times, the former Real Madrid man claimed he was so much in love with his new club that he cried after the team got knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle. The Red Devils were defending their crown.

“We were defending the title and we were out. I don’t care if I am here for six months, I was upset. I don’t know how long I was crying like a kid.

“Bruno [Fernandes] comes to tell me to relax and I still have the same sh-t face. It’s good and it’s bad. Maybe I am too passionate, too emotional in some moments but I can’t control.”

Despite the short stint, the player has nothing but love for the Manchester giants because they trusted him when Spurs’ new boss Ange Postecoglou had kicked him out.

“When one window closes, another door opens. Karma was good for me. I went to United. The people there are unbelievable. I don’t know why but I still receive a lot of messages.

“I love them because from the first moment they gave me so much love. Maybe the way I play, always giving everything, and they love that.”

The left-back finally revealed that his loan was ultimately terminated in January because Shaw was back in training while Malacia was nearing a return.

Nothing but love for United

It was felt that the Spain international would not get as many chances and there was no point in keeping hold of him and depriving him of the chance to play regularly.

“You can’t control this. I told the manager thanks for everything. When I remember Manchester it will be with a smile on my face. I hope they can win the FA Cup. I still support them. It was a difficult moment in my life and they gave me the love.”

He has since made the move to Brentford where he has started the last six games and picked up an assist as well. How United could have done with him at this difficult moment.

In hindsight, considering the England international’s poor injury record, it would have been more prudent to keep the Europa League winner for the season. Another poor decision that has come back to bite Ten Hag.

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has poured cold water on reports linking Ryan Sessegnon with a move to Manchester United.

Earlier in the transfer window, the left-back was linked with a surprise loan move to Old Trafford.

United had already conducted a similar deal with Spurs in the summer, when they agreed a last-minute loan deal for Sergio Reguilon on the final day of the window.

An unexpected injury crisis had left Erik ten Hag without either of his senior left-backs as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were both set for long-term absences through injury.

A few days before this unfortunate development, the club had already agreed a loan move for Brandon Williams to be re-united with Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town.

Similarly, Alvaro Fernandez was close to signing for La Liga side Granada on loan. Ten Hag did not believe the young Spaniard was ready to start consistently in the Premier League and so a more experienced left-back became a priority in the final days of the window.

The club quickly settled on Reguilon as Spurs were happy for him to depart on an inexpensive loan.

Fast forward to the beginning of January, with Shaw and Malacia both set to return this month and Diogo Dalot demonstrating the ability to switch sides to left-back, United decided to terminate the deal for the Spurs left-back.

Reguilon promptly returned to London, eventually joining Brentford on loan instead.

Rather bizarrely, however, it was then reported that United may use the “open channel” of dialogue established with Spurs over this deal to sign Sessegnon on loan. One left-back in, one left-back out constituting a rather surprising tactic in the transfer market.

Robinson does not believe any such deal will come to fruition, however.

The former goalkeeper stated: “With Sessegnon his lack of first-team football would be his problem. I’d be surprised if United came in for him simply due to his lack of game time in his Premier League.”

The Peoples Person would be similarly shocked Paul!

Former Manchester United left back, Sergio Reguilon, is set to join Brentford on loan from Tottenham until the end of the current season.

The transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano has uttered his famous “here we go” line once again.

He claimed, “Sergio Reguilón to Brentford, here we go! Final green light just arrived after verbal agreement between clubs”.

In an exclusive story the Italian claimed it will be a loan move with no option to buy clause as Sergio will be back to Tottenham at the end of the season.

Medical tests are scheduled to take place at some point today before the move is completed.

The Spanish left back was signed as emergency cover by United as both first choice left sided full backs, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, picked up serious injuries during pre-season and at the start of the season respectively.

The 27 year old struggled to nail down a starting spot at the club and in spite of the injury crisis, could only make 12 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Whilst sometimes impressing in an attacking role by bombing forward, the left back failed to assert himself defensively.

It had been previously reported by Romano that the West London side were keen to take a chance on the Spanish international after his loan spell at Old Trafford had ended.

The full back will be hoping to get the game time he was so desperate to find in Manchester that has also eluded him in North London.

The Spaniard enjoyed early success in his career by winning the Europa League in 2020 with Sevilla and securing a move to Tottenham later that year.

Despite an initial positive start, the defender has failed to capture the form of his earlier career. At 27, he will be hoping this move is the catalyst to do so.

Manchester United’s summer business included five permanent signings and two loan incomings with both temporary arrivals failing to catch manager Erik ten Hag’s eye.

Due to numerous injuries in the midfield. Sofyan Amrabat is expected to remain for the time being but coaches feel his pace is not suited to the Premier League and is unlikely to earn a permanent stay.

Sergio Reguilon was also brought in at the last minute following injuries to both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia but the Dutch manager ended up using him sparingly.

The Spaniard completed the full 90 minutes only three times, with the United boss preferring to play right-back Diogo Dalot in his position.

Reguilon could not shine at United

The 27-year-old’s loan deal ended after a break clause was activated and he has since returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur who have no use for him.

The Spain international is expected to depart on loan again for the second half of the campaign and has been linked with quite a few clubs outside of England.

But transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Premier League side Brentford are interested in Reguilon and are pushing hard for his services.

The player will take the final call with Borussia Dortmund also among the sides eyeing the full-back. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Brentford interested in Spaniard

“Sergio Reguilon left Manchester United at the beginning of the January transfer window, returning from loan to go back to Tottenham. However, he’s not going to stay at Tottenham.

“Conversations between Reguilon’s agents and clubs are ongoing, and my understanding is that Brentford are pushing to sign the Spanish left-back.

They want him and they will push for this possibility, but then it will be up to the player because there are also other clubs interested in him. Reguilon will consider and assess all the options.”

During his stay in Manchester, it was clear to see that the defender loves bombing forward while simultaneously struggling to defend. It was no surprise to see the manager not select him more often.

The Madrid-born star is not quite up to the mark when it comes to playing for elite sides and Brentford could be a good place to start earning regular minutes.

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a loan move for another Tottenham Hotspur star – Ryan Sessegnon – just days after terminating Sergio Reguilon’s brief tenure at the club.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United had activated the break clause in Reguilon’s contract to send the Spanish left-back to Tottenham.

The club subsequently confirmed news of Reguilon’s departure.

It’s understood that United arrived at the decision due to the fact that Luke Shaw is almost back to full fitness and Tyrell Malacia’s rehabilitation is going well.

Reguilon made 12 appearances for the Red Devils.

However, according to The Independent (via The Express), Erik ten Hag’s side have their eye on yet another left-back from the North London outfit – Sessegnon.

It’s believed that United’s good relationship and “open dialogue” with Tottenham have raised the possibility of Sessegnon completing a January switch to Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions may be forced to explore yet another temporary move for Sessegnon as they’re severely limited as to how much they can spend during the ongoing winter transfer window by Financial Fair Play regulations.

Miguel Delaney states that United will utilize their “open channel” with Tottenham to explore the possibility of making Sessegnon the latest addition to Ten Hag’s ranks.

The 23-year-old’s progress at Tottenham since he made the jump from Fulham in 2019 has been hampered by consistently-occurring injuries.

Sessegnon has not played for his side this season as he is recovering from a long-term physical setback.

When he returns to action later this month, the Englishman is likely to find it extremely hard to replace Destiny Udogie, who is in extremely good form.

Such a scenario may ultimately lead Sessegnon and Tottenham to strongly consider a move to United if indeed such an arrangement is on the cards.

Manchester United are primed to target a new striker in January on loan as Erik ten Hag seeks to buttress his misfiring forward line.

The Dutchman’s side are currently languished in eighth place in the Premier League with only Burnley and Sheffield United having scored fewer goals than them this year; both teams by the way are rooted at the bottom of the table.

A statistic – twenty-two goals scored with a negative goal difference of minus five – tells the story of United’s season thus far.

Jadon Sancho, Antony and Mason Mount are yet to register a goal in the league. The two main centre-forwards – Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial – have scored just one apiece.

United’s left-wing has been the most fruitful of the front line, with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho combining for six goals (three each). Tottenham Hotspurs’ left-winger – Son Heung-min – has twelve on his own, by comparison.

The fact Scott McTominay sits atop United’s goal-scoring list in the league is another statistic which illustrates a painful wider story.

Furthermore, Financial Fair Play regulations ensure United are set to be severely limited in terms of recruitment this month.

Reports suggest Old Trafford officials are planning for a “few loan deals” as this is the extent of the club’s financial capability in the January window. This constraint, explains Carl Anka (The Athletic), is precisely why Sergio Reguilon’s loan from Tottenham Hotspur was terminated.

The Spaniard relocated to Old Trafford on the final day of a frantic summer window which saw the club also sign Sofyan Amrabat and Altay Bayindir. A ‘January break clause’ was included in the deal, enabling United to end the loan this month if deemed necessary.

Anka reveals Premier League regulations stipulate clubs can only “have a certain number of loanees” on their books at one time. As such, Reguilon’s loan was ended in order to “free up an additional loan slot”; with a striker believed to be the primary target in his place.

Laurie Whitwell confirms reports indicating United are looking at Timo Werner as a possible short-term solution.

RP Leipzig are thought to be open to the German striker departing the club on loan and his profile – a versatile forward with strong physical and pressing qualities – would suit the transitional game plan Ten Hag is trying to implement at Old Trafford.

Whitwell also references Bayern Munich forwards – Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Thomas Muller – as two other possibilities, given their reduced roles in light of Harry Kane’s arrival in Bavaria.

The ceasing of Reguilon’s time at Old Trafford had come as something of a surprise given neither Luke Shaw nor Tyrell Malacia are currently fit. When viewed through the lens of a limited number of loan slots, however, it begins to make more sense, with more help needed up front than at full back.

Manchester United have officially confirmed the end of Sergio Reguilon’s loan deal.

The Spanish fullback returns to Tottenham Hotspur having moved to Old Trafford on loan in September.

In a frantic final day of the summer window, the club agreed a hastily-arranged loan deal for Reguilon following an injury crisis in the left-back position.

A few days prior, it was confirmed that both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia would be ruled out with injury for the first part of the season. A rough timeline of November was posited as a return date for the two fullbacks.

To further compound the issue, just before this unfortunate development occurred, United had already agreed a season-long loan deal for Brandon Williams to reunite with Kieran McKenna at Ipswich.

The club was also in the process of negotiating another loan for Alvaro Fernandez though this was put on hold at the point United learned of the setbacks to Shaw and Malacia.

Ten Hag thought Fernandez was not ready to start in the Premier League despite his impressive season on loan at Preston North End last year. Reportedly, other members of the coaching staff disagreed with this assessment.

The recruitment team abided by the manager’s wishes, however. Fernandez was sent on loan to Granada, where the Spaniard has been impressing for his newly adopted side, while United began actively shopping for an experienced left-back on loan.

Marc Cucurella emerged as the first-choice option; however, Chelsea’s demands for a loan fee proved too costly for United and they quickly changed tac to Reguilon.

Spurs – eminently keen to offload a defender unwanted by new manager Ange Postecoglou – quickly agreed a deal with their Old Trafford counterparts, without a fee.

United would simply have to cover the left-back’s £120,000 a week wage packet.

A six-month break clause was also installed into the deal given United envisioned Reguilon as merely a short-term fix until the two first-choice left-backs returned from injury.

If the Spaniard had remained at Old Trafford past this point in January, United would have been committed to an additional six month loan until the end of the season.

With Shaw and Malacia both set to return this month, and a drastically reduced schedule for Ten Hag’s side (owing to early eliminations from the Champions League and Carabao Cup), it was not deemed necessary for Reguilon to remain beyond January.

The fullback confirmed his joy at getting the opportunity to represent United and thanked the fans and his teammates for the experience on social media.

Buena suerte Sergio!

Lazio and Borussia Dortmund are among the numerous European clubs that have been linked with Sergio Reguilon after the Tottenham Hotspur defender’s loan deal with Manchester United came to an end.

With Reguilon’s loan deal originally until the end of the season, Man United decided to terminate the player’s contract early.

An emergency signing ahead of the summer transfer deadline, Reguilon was brought in to fill in for the injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, both of whom are returning to fitness.

Still, even as the only available recognised left-back, Reguilon often lost minutes to Diogo Dalot, who would slot in on the left as Aaron Wan-Bissaka played at right-back.

While the Spaniard may be back at Spurs where he previously struggled to get game time, he could soon depart from the London club yet again with the media linking him to several clubs.

La Lazio Siamo Noi claimed that Serie A club Lazio are considering submitting a loan offer for the 27 year old during the January transfer window.

Still, they may have to contend with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, with The Peoples Person relaying that they could move for him in January.

Fabrizio Romano later reported Dortmund’s interest in Reguilon as well, adding weight to this claim.

Spanish transfer news website fichajes.net also spoke of Dortmund’s interest in Reguilon, adding that they are in need of a left-back given Ramy Bensebaini will be unavailable as he competes in the African Cup of Nations.

The site added that two La Liga competitors could also be looking to lure Reguilon back to his native Spain.

Real Betis has been named as a potential suitor, with manager Manuel Pellegrini reportedly looking to boost his squad depth as his team set their sights on European football next season.

The high-flying Girona are the other Spanish club being linked with Reguilon, with the club reportedly looking for another left-back to back up first-choice Miguel Gutiérrez as they vie for an unlikely La Liga title triumph.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans to begin his revolution at Manchester United by cutting over £30 million in wages over the January transfer window.

Football Insider reports the INEOS sporting team are “eager to implement stricter” financial measures at Old Trafford in a bid to bring down costs and promote productivity, both on and off the pitch.

United recorded a loss of £42 million last year and this number may be set to grow following early departures from the Champions League and Carabao Cup, as well as the unpleasant prospect of missing out on top four in the Premier League.

Ten Hag’s team currently languish in seventh place in the league with a negative goal difference.

The club’s third-place finish last season – which led to their Champions League appearance this season – would also have engendered a pay rise amongst the senior squad, owing to the bonus-incentivised contract structure used at Old Trafford.

The effect of this drive by Ratcliffe is already being felt with a number of decisive decisions made in recent days.

Sergio Reguilon has returned to Tottenham Hotspur following the termination of his loan deal. The Spaniard’s wage – in the region of £120,000 a week – will lead to £3.1 million saved in the second half of the season.

Similarly, Donny van de Beek’s relocation to Eintracht Frankfurt – which will see the German club cover 60% of his £125,000 a week wages – will spare United £1.9 million, meaning the pair’s departures combine to produce around a £5 million saving.

Jadon Sancho looks set to follow in Van de Beek’s footsteps to the Bundesliga with the winger increasingly close to agreeing a loan move to Borussia Dortmund. Though there is no official confirmation on the economics of the deal, the German club are reported to be offering a loan fee as well as covering some of the 23-year-old’s wages.

And given Sancho has been banished from the senior squad following a public dispute with Ten Hag in September, while continuing to collect a wage packet which could reach as high as £350,000 a week, any saving is a positive one for United.

It’s not just departures where the INEOS efficiency drive has been felt, however.

Last weekend, it was reported that United would not be extending Raphael Varane’s contract, which is set to expire in the summer. Instead, club officials will attempt to renegotiate a lower wage packet given the Frenchman currently earns £17.6 million a year. Given Varane’s inability to remain consistently available, with his 31st birthday rapidly approaching, this feels a sensible decision.

It appears the INEOS revolution is well and truly underway at Old Trafford and it will take no prisoners.
