Manchester United’s disappointing campaign is just three league games from completion but with an FA Cup final booked in at the end of the month, there is still a chance of it ending on a high.

Erik ten Hag’s squad is ravaged by injuries and has been throughout the campaign, plaguing the Dutchman’s second season in charge at Old Trafford.

United were without a raft of first-team stars in the woeful defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday night, with the team hitting a new low, losing 4-0 in the capital.

However, the club have finally confirmed some good news on the injury front with two key players back in training.

Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez were both pictured in today’s session and could well be in line for some minutes at the weekend.

Arsenal visit Old Trafford on Sunday in a huge game for Mikel Arteta’s side who are going punch-for-punch with Manchester City for this year’s title.

It’s also a big game for Ten Hag whose position at the club has come under huge pressure in recent months.

A win against Arteta’s in-form side would be a huge boost for Ten Hag who will know the importance of his players heading into the final with confidence.

Martinez has been a monumental miss for the team this season with the Argentine a key figure both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

The World Cup winner’s ability to play out from the back and start attacks has been sorely missed and getting him up to speed for the showpiece occasion would transform United’s chances on the day.

As for Rashford, his form has been atrocious all season, but he does possess the quality to cause any defence problems, as he showed on multiple occasions last year.

If Rashford can find a burst of quality for the remaining games, he probably does still represent United’s best chance of causing City problems, something he has a good record of doing.

The news of the pair’s return will provide an obvious boost to the squad who will be desperate to salvage something from what has been a wretched season to date.

Furthermore, the final looks like Ten Hag’s only chance to save his job in Manchester and he will be doing all he can to upset the odds at Wembley and regain some faith that has been lost this year.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is reportedly aiming to be fully fit and available to Erik ten Hag for selection in the Wembley FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Martinez has endured a disappointing individual campaign that has only seen him manage 11 appearances across all competitions so far.

His sophomore campaign at Old Trafford has been hampered by injury issues and physical setbacks that have kept him from nailing down a consistent run of appearances.

Earlier in the campaign, he was ruled out of action for almost four months due to a foot injury picked up in September before he suffered a knee injury just four games into his return.

The Argentine made his comeback into the team during United’s 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium when he replaced Victor Lindelof. It turned out that it was a case of a little too soon for the World Cup winner, who then sustained a calf strain in the subsequent training session.

To say Martinez has been sorely missed would be an understatement and his absence has been made more profound by the fact that the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Willy Kambwala have also been sidelined.

Evans played for the Red Devils in the 4-0 hammering vs. Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday night but Erik ten Hag himself admitted after the match that the veteran defender was not fit and was rushed back because of a lack of options in that part of the pitch.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ten Hag’s coaching staff believe some of United’s woes this season can be attributed to the lack of Martinez’s leadership.

The Daily Mail have provided a positive update on the 26-year-old’s recovery and relay that he is aiming to play a part in United’s clash this weekend against Arsenal.

The newspaper states, “Good news is hard to find in the aftermath of United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, but at least fans can look forward to the return of Lisandro Martinez.”

“Confidential understands that Martinez has set his sights on being fit for the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley on May 25 and hopes to get some minutes under his belt in the remaining three Premier League games – possibly as soon as Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.”

If Martinez realises his objective, it would undoubtedly come as a huge boost to Ten Hag and United.

Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff reportedly believe that the absence of Lisandro Martinez and the leadership he provides in the dressing room are partly to blame for Manchester United’s woes this season.

United suffered their 13th Premier League loss on Monday night at the hands of an in-form Crystal Palace side.

The Red Devils were thoroughly beaten 4-0, courtesy of a brace from Michael Olise and goals in either half from Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell.

For the first time in United’s history, they’ve been defeated twice by Crystal Palace in a single season – a fact that highlights the massive drop in standards at Old Trafford.

Club boss Ten Hag is under more pressure than ever before in his United tenure and calls for his sacking are only growing louder.

According to The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson, the Dutchman and his coaches are of the firm opinion that Martinez’s prolonged absence has played a part in the team’s struggles this term.

The Argentine has only managed 11 games across all competitions in a campaign riddled with injuries and fitness issues. These setbacks have prevented him from building on a positive first season at the club that saw him quickly endear himself to supporters.

The newspaper points out, “Manchester United coaching staff believe their squad has too few vocal leaders and that the injured Lisandro MartĂnez has been sorely missed in that regard.”

“The Guardian understands Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff have noticed how much quieter the changing-room environment is in MartĂnez’s absence and believe this had been detrimental to performances and results.”

“Although MartĂnez is not the only vocal player, his presence is considered vital in creating a winning mentality and driving the squad on. The captain, Bruno Fernandes, is the on-field leader and leads by example.”

The report adds that United are hopeful Martinez will be consistently available next season.

Up next for Ten Hag and his players is the daunting task of facing title challengers Arsenal at Old Trafford this weekend.

Manchester United and Erik ten Hag have been dealt a major personnel boost as Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez returned to training today.

Earlier this month, United confirmed that both Martinez and Victor Lindelof would be ruled out for a month after the pair sustained injuries during the club’s 1-1 draw against Brentford on 30th March.

On that occasion, Martinez – who had just returned from another long-term physical setback that had ruled him out of action for four months – was thrust into the action at the Gtech Community Stadium as a substitute.

United explained that the World Cup winner picked up a calf strain in a training session that took place in the aftermath of the disappointing draw vs. the Bees.

Martinez has been unable to nail down a consistent run of matches due to multiple issues. So far this term, the Argentine has made just 11 appearances across all competitions.

To say he has been sorely missed would be an understatement. With Jonny Evans, Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala also out recovering from injuries, Ten Hag has been forced to deploy a centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Casemiro in recent matches.

According to Sky Sports, Martinez is now back in team training at Carrington as he steps up his fitness with an eye on playing a part in United’s next game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

He was not the only one welcome sight at the Red Devils’ training complex. Rashford also took part in the sessions.

Rashford has not played for United since their humiliating FA Cup quarter-final win on penalties over Championship outfit Coventry City.

In that match, the England international was poor and after the final whistle, it emerged that he left Wembley while limping.

With him unavailable to Ten Hag for selection, Garnacho has started on the left flank in subsequent clashes vs. Sheffield United and Burnley.

No doubt Rashford will be hoping to finish what has been a disappointing season for him on a more positive note.

Manchester United have decided to keep Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez at the club despite their ongoing injury problems.

Martinez has been plagued by numerous serious injuries over the last twelve months and was frustratingly ruled out yet again, after just returning to action at the end of March. However, not many would consider the Argentine’s place in the squad at risk just yet, as he performed wonderfully in his first season at Old Trafford and certainly deserves the chance to prove he can stay fit next year.

Lindelof’s case is not so clear-cut.

The Swedish captain has played 27 times this season for the Red Devils but like so many of the team’s defenders, has suffered from on and off knocks.

Whilst United’s problems at the back have stemmed from poor tactics and out of form players, the 31 different defensive combinations they have had to play in the Premier League this season have also majorly contributed to the defensive mess.

As a result of the centre back’s injury issues, it was assumed by many that he may be on his way out of Old Trafford. Consequently, he has been linked to numerous clubs across Europe such as AC Milan and Sevilla.

With the defender’s contract running out next summer, this would be the moment to sell the player to get any sort of fee for him, as next January he could begin to negotiate a free transfer to clubs outside of the United Kingdom.

In spite of this, Football Insider report that sources have told them, “Man United have decided to keep both Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez at the club despite their persistent injury problems”.

“The decision has been made by new Red Devils part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS organisation ahead of the 2024/25 season as the players have been assessed as “important” by the new regime.

It was also relayed by The Peoples Person yesterday that INEOS had decided to let Varane leave on a free transfer to free up wage space for the summer window.

In this context, the new owners are probably hesitant to lose more experience and being slightly younger and on significantly lower wages, will appeal to the new hierarchy. Furthermore, the Swede is more likely to accept a bench role than the bigger-named former Real Madrid defender.

United supporters will be hoping for new centre backs recruitments as Jarred Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer and Jean-Clair Todibo have all been continuously linked to the club.

Therefore if Lindelof was to stay as fourth or fifth choice centre back, it could be a smart piece of business by the new owners.

]]>

Manchester United’s 2023-2024 season is in danger of going down as one of the worst in the club’s recent history.

The Red Devils lie in sixth place in the league, 11 points off teams in the Champions League places and are in serious danger of being overtaken by both West Ham and Newcastle. An eighth place finish would represent the club’s worst league finish since 1990, when they finished 13th but did manage to win the FA Cup – a potentially startling symmetry to this season.

The United defence has been incredibly suspect all season as they shipped 15 goals in just six Champions League group games, crashing out in last place in December. What’s more, no team in Europe’s top five leagues has faced more shots on goal than the Red Devils in 2024.

Of course, the players and manager need to have a long hard look in the mirror when this season is done and dusted, but there is another major reason behind this season’s pathetic displays – a scarcely believable list of absentees through injury, especially in defence.

Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw have missed the majority of the season and they are arguably the club’s two most valuable defenders, not just in defending but also in Erik ten Hag’s build up play.

In fact, all the backline has been missing at some point during the season, resulting in an incredible 31 different back four combinations during the season. This was highlighted by Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire being the only two fit centre backs to play in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

When analysing the names, it can be seen that the only real consistent in the defensive line as of late has been Diogo Dalot and perhaps it is no surprise that he has been enjoying arguably the best season of his career, highlighted by his fine display versus Liverpool at the weekend.

The Portuguese international has played 26 times in 31 Premier League matches. However, nobody else has been able to play for any considerable stretch of time in the first eleven.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has played 13 times, Raphael Varane 16, Victor Lindelof 11, Harry Maguire 14 times and even the 36 year old Jonny Evans has started nine times and been subbed on many more. This means that many players have had decent game time, but really no central defender has been able to consolidate their place in the team, never mind having two continuously available to form an actual partnership.

The left back is the most ridiculous situation where Tyrell Malacia has not played all season and Shaw has only played 11 matches with a few of them being in the centre back position.

In total, there have been six different left backs used this season with only two of them being recognised left full backs, Shaw and Sergio Reguilon. Sofyan Amrabat, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot have all had to deputise in the unfamiliar role.

Ten Hag perplexed fans once again during his post-match press conference when he claimed his side played very well despite dominated in terms of shots and possession against their arch-rivals.

However, one comment he made did make a whole lot of sense. Without being able to field anything close to a consistent back four, it is normal that they players can’t build up routines or patterns to understand one another.

There is much talk about the pursuit of sporting directors and the upcoming transfer window but perhaps the most important piece of business INEOS carry out will be connected to the ongoing investigation of the massive failings of the current medical team employed at Old Trafford.

It is vital to not let any player or manager off the hook but at the same time it is worth considering, could any team actually be successful defensively under such ridiculous circumstances?

With both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa dropping points, Manchester United’s clash against Chelsea on Thursday has taken on added significance.

United are currently sixth and a win at Stamford Bridge could bring down the gap with Spurs to six points and with fifth place enough for Champions League football, the race could be back on again.

But the Red Devils camp was rocked by the news of Lisandro Martinez suffering yet another injury, with the Argentine set to remain on the sidelines for a month.

He was joined in the treatment room by Victor Lindelof with Ten Hag’s options at the back dwindling by the minute as he indicated during the pre-match press conference.

Finally some good news

In some good news, The Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst has now reported that both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans have been passed fit and are in the travelling squad.

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both passed fit and in the MUFC squad tonight. Amad also back after suspension,” the reporter wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Frenchman had to be substituted in the game against Brentford and it was felt that the World Cup winner might join his aforementioned teammates on the sidelines.

Evans’ return is another good news as the Northern Irishman has arguably been one of the standout players this campaign.

The manager had indicated that both had joined training and this will come as a boost ahead of the game against the Blues with Liverpool to follow next.

Harry Maguire had also resumed training a couple of days ago and could be in the starting line-up alongside Varane with Evans on the bench.

Amad also back

Academy graduate Willy Kambwala is another who can slot in at the back and has impressed whenever given the chance.

Thankfully for Ten Hag, the full-back crisis has resolved itself with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both fit and can play on either side even though the former Crystal Palace man is much more comfortable on the right.

Another addition to the matchday squad is Amad Diallo, who served a suspension for the game against Brentford due to his red card against Liverpool in the FA Cup for removing his shirt while celebrating that last-minute winner.

Against the Bees, the wingers were dire and considering Amad’s exploits, he deserves more minutes against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

With Chelsea languishing in 12th with only one win in their last four league games, this is a huge chance for the Red Devils to secure a win and keep alive their Champions League hopes.

]]>

Manchester United were rocked by the news of Lisandro Martinez suffering yet another injury which is set to sideline him for almost a month.

Erik ten Hag’s style of play is very much dependent on the Argentine’s presence in the backline with the World Cup winner having the composure to play out from the back with minimum fuss.

With Martinez being left-footed and having a no-nonsense style of defending, it is clear that the club currently do not have a player of his skillset in their ranks.

And with the race to Champions League football still on and the FA Cup within touching distance, his presence was a must during this crucial period.

However, since his first big injury and subsequent operation at the business-end of last season, the Argentina international has hardly managed to stay injury-free.

Licha’s rehab not well handled

He has missed 31 games in total this term, starting with a recurrence of last season’s injury at the beginning of the campaign.

The former Ajax star tried to play on by taking pain-killing injections but ultimately it proved too much to handle and the defender missed three months of action.

Soon after his return, the 26-year-old suffered a knee injury and the club was supposed to be extra careful with his rehabilitation but recent decisions have been questionable to say the least.

Why did the player go and join up with his international team to practice when it is clear to see that he needed further rest. And why did the manager again rush him back against Brentford when there were other options on the bench.

Ten Hag’s training sessions have frequently been blamed for the rising injuries and maybe even that needs to be tweaked moving forward.

While decisions from the coaches have not been spot on, the medical team’s performance is also under the scanner with Martinez’s injury becoming the 53th separate cases of injury or illness this term.

Not to forget, the club doctors had reportedly failed to spot Casemiro’s injury and INEOS must remember to complete a overhaul of this department.

Coaches, doctors both to blame

As The Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst pointed out, the decision not to hire a fitness coach is also proving to be quite costly.

He attacked the manager by pointing out that sending the centre-back out to Los Angeles would never be endorsed by Sir Alex Ferguson if he where to have remained in charge.

“Ten Hag brought an assistant coach in Van der Gaag and analyst Kevin Keji but not a fitness coach and that looks costly. Injuries have been rife at other elite clubs and post-Covid schedule hasn’t helped but breaking the 50-mark for ailments raises serious questions,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“And, as much as Martinez would have enjoyed spending time in the Argentina camp, it was illogical to allow an injured player to fly to LA when he hadn’t played in six weeks. The question wouldn’t even have even been asked if Ferguson was the manager.”

Now once again with key fixtures coming up, the Argentina star will be missing and his injury record is starting to look concerning. Maybe along with a right-sided centre-back, a backup for Martinez should also be in the plans for the new co-owners.

Manchester United defensive duo Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are set to miss a month of competitive action due to fresh injury setbacks.

United have confirmed the devastating news via their official website.

The club’s statement reads, “Manchester United centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for at least a month due to muscle injuries.”

Lindelof was taken off just before the 70th minute mark during United’s most recent clash against Brentford.

The Swede started alongside Raphael Varane at the heart of the Red Devils’ backline but neither player completed the match. Varane was also substituted at the interval but it was Lindelof’s issue which seemed a bit more serious.

Lindelof hit the ground while clutching his hamstrings.

The 29-year-old was unavailable to Erik ten Hag for selection for around a month during the busy December-January period amid a groin injury.

Even more disastrous is that Martinez is also facing a spell on the sidelines while he recovers from yet another physical setback picked up this term.

The World Cup winner has managed just nine Premier League appearances and 11 games across all competitions, during a campaign that has been riddled with injuries.

Martinez missed almost four months due to a foot injury picked up in Setember before he suffered a knee injury just four games into his return.

He just made his comeback into the team during United’s Saturday clash vs. Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium when he replaced Lindelof. Unfortunately, it now seems that the return was a little too soon for the 26-year-old who can’t seem to catch a break in his second campaign at Old Trafford.

According to United, Martinez has now sustained a calf strain in training and will be unavailable for the Red Devils’ next few clashes.

Ten Hag’s men are back in action on Thursday when they make their way to London to take on Mauricio Pochettino’s men. United then host Liverpool on Sunday.

]]>

Manchester United in 2024 have holes all over the pitch and this was brutally shown in yesterday’s insipid draw against Brentford.

One area that is in desperate need of some attention from new owners INEOS is that of the centre back position.

There are numerous defenders at the club who have an incredibly foggy future such as Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

Not only that but no team in 2024 has conceded more shots on goal in the Premier League than Erik ten Hag’s side.

Naturally the Mancunian club have been linked to a plethora of defensive reinforcements and four of the most commonly rumoured centre back targets will be assessed here. The potential candidates to partner Lisandro Martinez in August are Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer, Jean-Clair Todibo and Antonio Silva.

Playing Style

One thing that INEOS have been keen to stress is that gone are the days where the manager has total control over playing style.

Therefore, until a sporting director and the recruitment team is finalised, it is impossible to say what exactly that style will be. However, it is logical to assume that it will be a modern ball-playing style that the best sides in the Premier League implement.

Moreover, having Andre Onana between the sticks and Lisandro Martinez as the main centre back, ball playing proficiency should be a top priority for the defensive target.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was Branthwaite’s coach last year when he was at PSV Eindhoven described the 21 year old as “good on the ball, can play on the left or the right of centre-back because he is two-footed. He has height and speed, so he is very complete”.

However, nobody would sensibly suggest that the Carlisle man is as good on the ball as Martinez is. In addition as a left-footed centre back, it could be problematic to play him alongside United’s Argentine butcher.

Another candidate is that of Bremer, who like Branthwaite, his physical attributes stand out. The Brazilian is certainly good on the ball but it is his “defensive awareness and traits, such as tackling, interceptions, blocks, applying pressure and clearances” that make the 27 year old so sought after. He is also a right footer which would allow him to slot in next to Martinez.

Another potential defensive solution is Jean-Clair Todibo who has been described as ” balanced as any centre back is allowed to be, a key figure in build-up and in snuffing out threats”.

“In possession, he is as comfortable as any defender in the world, standing out with his ability to ball-carry and pass, to beat the press innovatively, to be the backbone of a possession-heavy side”.

What’s more his right footedness would allow him to play the right centre back role with comfort.

The final candidate is that of Antonio Silva from Benfica. The 20 year old has been a revelation for the Portuguese giants and has shown this season why he is one of the most talented young prospects in world football.

“Silva is a ball-playing defender. He likes to pass the ball from the back. The defender completes 8.23 long passes per 90, putting him in the 94 percentile” in the Portuguese league. However, he has more to his game than this. He is described as a “no nonsense defender” who loves a tackle and at 1.87 m has the physical prowess to deal with the Premier League. The Portuguese certainly seems alongside, Todibo, to be the most balanced of the four, as well as being most comfortable on his right foot.

Verdict: Silva and Todibo

Price

The Red Devils, like all of English football teams nowadays live in a world of financial constraint due to Profit and Sustainability rules.

As mentioned earlier, United also have a multitude of issues to try and solve in this summer’s transfer window, so not all the budget can go on a centre back and this is where it gets complicated.

Silva looks a great potential buy but it will be incredibly expensive. Benfica sell but they sell at their price and with a contract until 2027, they have no pressure to release their prized asset. It has been relayed that United are “best prepared” to sign the Portugal international but with a release clause of €100m it could be incredibly expensive to prise the starlet away from Lisbon.

Branthwaite will also cost a pretty penny. It has been reported that any team wanting to steal away the England defender may need to be pay an astronomical ÂŁ80 million.

Bremer will be cheaper, as he reportedly has a pact that he can leave for €60-70m this summer but it is still quite an outlay.

Todibo on the other hand seems to have a much more reasonable fee. Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed that that Nice will let the player leave for around ÂŁ40m and with his parent club also being owned by INEOS, this would surely grease the wheels of any deal.

Verdict: Todibo

Age and Experience

Bremer is the clear winner in terms of experience at being 27 years old, however, also goes against INEOS’ reported new ethos of buying players before they become established experienced ones.

Branthwaite and Silva certainly fit this model much better but at 21 and 20 respectively, but they are both incredibly inexperienced and there is still a big question mark in regard to their future trajectory as players.

At 24 years old, Todibo once again, seems the most balanced option. He is young enough to keep progressing and be hungry enough to step up from Nice to United but has also had more than a couple of seasons of topflight football.

One charge against the Frenchman could be that he has only played in Ligue 1 but there is a strong history of French-based players adapting to the Premier League effectively.

Verdict: Todibo

All in all, Nice’s French centre back seems the most sensible deal for INEOS to pursue. They know the player well and he is a balanced, ball playing, modern centre back. At 24 years old and a likely price tag of ÂŁ40m, he is of the right age and certainly has an attractive price tag for a club looking to fix numerous positions under PSR restrictions.
