The thought was the club had followed manager Erik ten Hag’s instructions and done decent business and could now keep this stability moving forward.

But rumours mills keep suggesting another summer of change could be on the cards with plenty of publications claiming that the new No 1 Andre Onana is yet to fully convince and a replacement could be brought in.

The Peoples Person also relayed that reserve keeper Tom Heaton, who rejoined the club three seasons ago and whose contract ends in June , wants to play more and could be on the move.

Backup keeper set to leave

Backup keeper Altay Bayindir was signed from Fenerbahce but he has played only once this season, against Newport County in the FA Cup back when the Cameroonian was unavailable due to his AFCON commitments.

Onana’s start was far from smooth with the 28-year-old committing a number of high-profile mistakes and there were calls to drop the new No 1.

But the manager kept playing him in a bid to help him regain confidence and he even insisted that the former Inter Milan man leave late for international duty which created a lot of furore back home.

So instead of getting the chance to play in three games, the Turk got his only one shot as the team conceded twice against League Two opposition.

The Turkish international must have expected a few more opportunities with the manager praising his adaptation but so far, nothing has materialised.

He has been linked with a shock return back home and now, Italian publication La Lazio Siamo Noi have claimed that the shot-stopper is attracting interest from Trabzonspor.

And if he does end up leaving, the Red Devils will try and secure Lazio backup keeper Christos Mandas, who has impressed in Serie A this season.

United have already been linked with primary Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel but the Greek understudy has risen to the occasion since the Lazio No 1’s injury in March.

Mandas has made 10 appearances in all competitions, keeping five clean sheets in the process and the Rome-based club do not want to lose the 22-year-old.

They are ready to sanction a loan move to help the young keeper gain further experience but the 20-time English league champions will try and secure a permanent deal.

“Manchester United have their eyes on Mandas. In recent days, our editorial staff had learned that Lazio could decide to loan the Greek to a team that guarantees him a starting place, and then welcome him back with a greater wealth of experience.

“From England, however, it would seem that the Red Devils are serious: Lotito could listen to United’s proposal, which however would not be oriented towards a loan, but towards a long-term investment to replace Bayindir (courted by Trabzonspor), Onana’s second.”

The Greece U21 international’s contract with Lazio runs until 2028 and he has a market value of €1 million. Whether United are once again forced into an overhaul of the goalkeeping department remains to be seen.

The decision was not taken in haste as the Dutchman watched the Spaniard for one full season in which the club legend committed numerous errors, none bigger than the one in the FA Cup final which ultimately broke the camel’s back.

The club had initially offered the former Atletico Madrid man a new long-term deal on reduced wages but on Ten Hag’s instructions, rescinded that offer and put on the table a new deal on even lesser wages.

De Gea opted to leave, leaving Ten Hag with Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton. Henderson was keen to quit, and and with a deal for Andre Onana dragging on, the manager decided to block an exit for Heaton.

Heaton’s future

Premier League new boys Luton Town were interested in the academy graduate who started only two games in the previous campaign.

But after discussions with the manager, the shot-stopper ended up staying only to see the club bring in Altay Bayindir as reserve keeper which meant he was effectively made third-choice.

He has been named on the bench 12 times this season but is yet to make an appearance with the Turk himself making only one appearance in his debut season.

In fact, since his return to Old Trafford, the 38-year-old has only managed three appearances when former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had promised much more.

Heaton’s current deal with the club ends in June and with the goalie keen to play more and in no mood to hang up his gloves, a separation seemed likely.

But as The Manchester Evening News have now revealed, the former Burnley star is open to staying on and is receptive to the idea of joining the coaching staff at the club in the future.

Contract ends in June

Bayindir has been linked with an exit and that could mean an unlikely promotion but Heaton is keeping all his options open as he seeks to play a bit more regularly.

“Tom Heaton is open to staying at Manchester United after his contract expires in June. Heaton has no intention of retiring and is keeping his options open.

“He is understood to be disappointed at his limited playing time at United but would be receptive to assuming a coaching role at the club after his playing career finishes.”

If both reserve keepers end up leaving, another mad scramble for goalies could ensue as was seen last season. Hopefully, the club can keep the continuity intact at the back.

Manchester United are looking at signing Ivan Provedel to provide competition for Andre Onana next season.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper has had a rollercoaster of a season to say the least since relocating from Milan to Manchester last summer.

The Champions League group stage saw the keeper at his worst with numerous high profile blunders which certainly set his team back, most notably letting in two soft free kicks in Istanbul which meant the Red Devils lost a two goal lead twice in the match and had to settle for a costly 3-3 draw.

However, in some regards, Onana has also had a great season as he has produced many fine saves and was able to crucially help his side win the FA Cup semi-final shootout against Coventry City.

The match on Saturday against Burnley was a classic example of Onana’s season, where he produced numerous fine stops only to concede a careless penalty late on, which the Clarets converted to secure a 1-1 draw.

Despite these issues, the former Ajax keeper has been a mainstay in the team playing 46 times this season with back-up keeper Altay Bayindir only suiting up for the side once – in an FA Cup ties versus Newport County when Onana was at the African Cup of Nations.

Consequently, reports have emerged that the Turkish keeper is fed up with sitting on the bench and is looking for a move after less than a year at the club. In response, Fichajes report that United could look to Lazio’s Ivan Provedel as a potential replacement.

The Spanish outlet states that Onana has not offered “the expected performance at the start of this season, which has fuelled the rumours about the signing of a new goalkeeper.”

This has led them to look at Serie A and in particular Lazio, as Provedel is said to have “given great individual performances that have not gone unnoticed by Manchester United who according to the latest information would be willing to make an economic effort to sign the player and thus accompany Onana during 2024/2025.”

However, it is made clear, even if only originally, Provedel would not be the number one keeper: “Manchester United would bet on Provedel to raise the competitive level of its goalkeepers, with Onana being chosen to compete for the starting position.”

The Dutch stopper himself has played 38 times this season and, impressively, has only conceded 31 goals in 28 Serie A games.

The 30-year-old Italian is probably most well-known for his last minute heroics last September when he scored a late equaliser versus Atletico Madrid and became only the second goalkeeper to score from open play in Champions League history.

It is unsure whether the Italian would give up regular first-team football to sit on United’s bench but he may see a move to such a club as too big to turn down.

Moreover, in the likely case the club will have a new manager in the summer, the new man in charge may not be so wedded to the idea of Onana playing every game he is available for.

Just last summer, United forked out a combined £51.5m to secure the signings of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir from Inter Milan and Fenerbahce respectively.

The recruitments of Onana and Bayindir followed the departures of long-serving shot-stopper David de Gea and Carrington academy graduate Dean Henderson who joined Crystal Palace.

Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Bayindir has made just one appearance for the club – an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Newport County. He was tasked with playing between the sticks while Andre Onana was away with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Meanwhile, Onana endured a difficult start to his United tenure. The 28-year-old made a number of high-profile mistakes, especially in the Champions League that eventually resulted in the team’s elimination from the continental competition.

However, he seems to have now turned a corner and is showing why Ten Hag decided to bring him in. Onana was one of United’s better players during the side’s most recent clash against Brentford. He was even named in the BBC Team of the Week.

Despite all this, Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that United still have doubts about their n.o 24 and are open to replacing him with AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.

Maignan’s contract at the San Siro is set to expire in 2026 and at the moment, no talks are going on with Milan.

The news outlet relays that there is “no discussion” and that the renewal is proving to be “complex.”

The Rossoneri are said to value Maignan at €100m. United are not the only top European outfit chasing the France international. Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also believed to be in the race to secure his signature.

La Gazzetta dello Sport relay that Maignan wants a pay package worth €8m per season – a figure Milan simply can’t afford. Talks with the player’s agent Jonathan Kebe “have not yet come to fruition” but the Serie A giants are still intent on settling on a lower sum.

Any suitor including United will be met with a firm “no” if they submit an offer below the €8m Maignan and his camp desire.

Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani opened up on the situation – including that of defender Theo Hernandez – a few days ago and said, “Maignan and [Theo] Hernandez have a contract for another two years. We talk about selling or buying but it is often the players who decide their future. Theo and Mike are two champions, we hope they stay with us as long as possible.”

It’s understood that for Maignan, the decisive factor in determining which team he’ll play for next is ambition and trophies. He wants to play for a club that is challenging for top honours every season.

Manchester United target, Diant Ramaj, has given his thoughts on recent reports linking him to a move away from Ajax.

Consequently, the German has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including United.

Commenting to Voetbal International on rumours of a potential move in the future the German under-20 international stated, “I’ve heard that too, yes. I see things like that as feedback for my work here”.

“I see the fact that big clubs are showing interest as a compliment. I will continue to work on everything, as I am doing now”.

The keeper stressed however that he would now allow himself to become distracted by such talk.

“I don’t let myself get carried away, I just stay calm and keep improving details”.

“That’s all that’s in my head, I’m too busy for other things [like a transfer] – that’s work for my agents to deal with”.

The keeper went on to suggest that he would be happy with a move in the future and that he is confident in his own ability to manage the expectations of such a career step.

“I’m not afraid of anything, because I know what I can do. I just want to do my best here, let’s see what the future brings”.

United have had their own issues in the position this year when they completely revolutionised their goalkeeping department last summer by replacing both David de Gea and Dean Henderson with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

The Cameroonian made an appalling start, mainly in the Champions League but he has since steadied the ship and been one of United’s most consistent players in 2024.

Bayindir on the other hand, has only made one appearance against Newport County in the FA Cup and is rumoured to be unhappy with his lack of gametime and seeking a move back to Turkey.

If Erik ten Hag manages to survive as coach of the Red Devils into this summer, we know he has no issues buying a player from the Eredivisie or his former side, so Ramaj might just get his big club move to back up Onana in the future.

United could find themselves in need of a new shot-stopper this summer in the event that Altay Bayindir leaves the club.

The Turkey international arrived last summer alongside Andre Onana but already, it has been suggested that he could be on his way out.

Bayindir has only made one appearance for United, in the fourth round of the FA Cup against League Two side Newport County.

He was tasked with playing between the sticks as Andre Onana was away on international duty with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

It’s understood that Bayindir is unhappy with his situation at Old Trafford and could seek pastures anew in the coming months. Galatasaray have been mentioned as an interested party in the disgruntled 25-year-old.

Transfermarkt report that if Bayindir departs United, the club could move in for MLS’ Patrick Schulte, who plays for Columbus Crew.

Arsenal are thought to be admirers of Schulte and want him as a potential replacement for Aaron Ramsdale who has lost his place in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI to David Raya.

“Arsenal, however, are not the only club interested in the US men’s national team goalkeeper. Transfermarkt understands that Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also followed Schulte’s development in MLS.”

Ramaj, 22, has been very impressive this term in the Netherlands. He has turned heads with his bold and mature displays since making the jump from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee in the region of £7 million last August.

He initially started out on the bench but soon usurped Geronimo Rulli and Jay Gorter to a starting berth at the club.

With Ramaj in goal, Ajax overcame their extremely poor form earlier in the season that put them on the brink of relegation. The Johan Cruyff Arena outfit are now fifth in the Eredivisie standings, partly thanks to Ramaj’s heroics between the sticks.

His contract with Ajax expires in 2028.

It’s understood that Bayindir just wants to play football and is eager to be at a club where he can feature more – something that seems very unlikely at United.

Galatasaray are currently at the summit of the SuperLig table, two points ahead of Fenerbahce. Galatasaray’s long-serving goalkeeper Fernando Muslera is approaching the end of his contract after 13 years at the club and a change is forthcoming.

As per Aspor, Okan Buruk wants a Turkish goalkeeper next partly because the Rams Park outfit urgently needs to reduce the number of overseas players in their ranks from 14 to 12.

Needless to say, Bayindir’s move to Galatasaray considering his affiliation with Fenerbahce would be very controversial.

The 25-year-old’s contract with United is set to expire in 2027.

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department underwent major surgery last summer with David de Gea leaving the club at the end of his contract.

Bayindir has had to be patient to make his bow for the first team but made his debut in the recent FA Cup win against Newport County.

Despite conceding twice in the 4-2 victory, the 25-year-old acquitted himself well, looking confident and assured on what was a big day for the player.

As reported by Sport Witness, the Turkish international has revealed his thoughts after his maiden appearance for the club and was delighted to pull on the shirt for the first time.

“It was truly an indescribable feeling for me.

“I am very happy and proud to play my first match with this jersey. I was very excited from the first moment I warmed up. Playing the first match is always an unforgettable memory,” he said.

Bayindir also made history by becoming the first Turkish player to play for United and couldn’t hide his emotion when reflecting on the milestone.

“Being a football player and seeing our flag flying at Old Trafford is too indescribable to be described in words. I don’t know how this can be explained, but I can say it in one word, ‘pride’,” he added.

Bayindir will hope to add to his first team minutes in the coming months and will be looking to impress Erik ten Hag in training.

Onana remains the undisputed number one but should his patchy form continue, Bayindir will be sure to be ready to take his chance.

United will hope to continue their good form in 2024 as they travel to Aston Villa on Sunday after back-to-back wins in the Premier League.
