At his pre-match press conference before yesterday’s defeat to Arsenal, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was asked his opinion on people asking for him to be sacked, and replied:

“Either they don’t have any knowledge of football or they don’t have any knowledge about managing a football team.”

Ten Hag also said “maybe we over-performed” last season and has consistently blamed United’s poor showing in the league and Champions League on all the injuries sustained this season.

What seems odd about recent press conferences is the questions that are not being asked, although the club’s decision to ban three major outlets from asking anything could be an indication that stiff challenges are not allowed.

So we will ask the questions that no-one is asking Ten Hag. Perhaps whoever is reading this who knows Erik could pass them on. After all, we want to understand football like he does.

Question 1. Is it just bad luck that United have sustained so many injuries this season? Are you taking no responsibility at all for:
– training methods
– recovery schedules
– team rotation?

We are dealing here with a man who is reportedly so meticulous, you demand the grass on training pitches is cut to within a millimetre of your specifications. You are a man who completely controls the players’ diets, a man who, unlike Sir Alex Ferguson, oversees every detail of training.

Several weeks ago when asked if you knew why there had been so many injuries, you replied “We have an idea and we will work on it.” And yet since then, things have got even worse. So will you accept responsibility, Erik, for the failure of that “work” you were doing?

You either take no responsibility for the injury crisis, in which case you have failed to take control of something vitally important, or you do take responsibility, in which case you have failed to fix it. Either way, what are we who “don’t have any knowledge of football” not understanding when we call for you to be sacked?

Question 2. On squad construction. Ignoring the injuries:
– did you not spend £10 million on loaning Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina and do you take responsibility for his being an absolute flop at United?
– did you not sanction the sale of Teden Mengi to Luton Town for under £2 million on August 31st, who has turned out to be one of the Premier League’s best young defenders this season, knowing that your centre backs are all injury prone?
– did you not sanction the sale of Dean Henderson to Crystal Palace, knowing that Andre Onana might take some time to acclimatise to the Premier League, and putting the team in a position where it had to get used to not one, but two new keepers?
– did you not agree for Alvaro Fernandez Carreras to go on loan to Granada in August when Luke Shaw’s understudy, Tyrell Malacia, was clearly going to be out for some time, and then again to Benfica in January, when Shaw himself was also injured?
– did you also not return loanee left back Sergio Reguilon to Spurs in January leaving no cover at left back at all with Shaw struggling with persistent injuries?
– did you not fail to bring the best out of Jadon Sancho and then mishandle a disciplinary situation, leaving him to excel at Borussia Dortmund and help them to the Champions League final while you plodded on with a far inferior player in Antony?
– did you not forfeit the option to make Marcel Sabitzer’s move from Dortmund permanent last summer and live to regret it when seeing him, also, look a far better midfielder than any you retained or bought?
– would you not admit that a player you sold for £15 million, Anthony Elanga, has outperformed all your wingers this season despite playing for a relegation-threatened side?

Question 3. Do you accept any responsibility for United crashing out of the Champions League from one of the easiest groups in the tournament?

Question 4. Do you not accept that even an injury-ravaged Manchester United side should not:
– Concede four goals to FC Copenhagen and Crystal Palace?
– Concede three goals to Bournemouth, Coventry City, Galatasaray (twice), Brighton, Newcastle and Wolves?
– Concede two goals to Newport County?

Question 5. Do you take any responsibility for team discipline when in addition to Sancho, there have been off-field issues or public spats with Antony, Marcus Rashford, Raphael Varane, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo?

Question 6. Would you not admit to being stubborn in not admitting that the “transitional style” of play you chose to implement this season has been an abject failure? Should it not have been abandoned long ago?

Question 7. Is that gaping space between the midfield line and defensive line that has left us vulnerable to hundreds of counter-attacks this season a good thing? We are asking because you continue to leave it unaddressed so you must have a good reason that we, those who don’t understand football, would like to learn about.

Question 8. Could you explain please the logic of leaving one defender back for a corner when there are two minutes of extra time remaining and United are a goal up? It is obviously something very clever of you that is beyond our comprehension.

Question 9. Most goals conceded since 1971 (when there were four more games in the season) and on target to be the most ever. Joint most home defeats in history (a loss on Wednesday will take us to outright worst) – again, even comparing to years when there were 42 games per season. Many other negative records broken. This is despite £175 million having been spent on transfers. Since you have always been able to field 11 senior players in every game this season, would you not agree that this alone is grounds for dismissal?

Erik, we look forward to understanding these things so we can become better fans, pundits and journalists and provide you with the correct support you so richly deserve.

Manchester United have so many problems that it is hard to see a way through the fog.

A squad full of underperforming, overpaid stars, severe spending restrictions brought about by FFP (or PSR/FSR as it is now known) and a manager who appears to be losing his grip on both his players and reality are just some of the problems faced by the incoming new management team of INEOS.

However, the fact is, if work can be done swiftly and decisively – and having Dan Ashworth in place as director of football could be vital in this – the United team that kicks off the new season in August could be absolutely transformed for below the modest transfer budget of £100 million mooted by Four Four Two.

Our proposed overhaul is massive and it is the sheer number of incoming and outgoing players involved that would make it a challenge.

Another challenge to the hypothetical model we are about to present is finding clubs to take big earners Raphael Varane and Casemiro off United’s hands, even at giveaway prices. The problem is that Varane has one year and Casemiro two years left on their contracts and £300,000-plus per week salaries that no other club in Europe would be likely to match.

For the purposes of the exercise, we’ve been optimistic and assumed both could be sold to clubs in Saudi Arabia or the USA for a mere £5 million apiece.

With those two provisos, here is a possible United squad to start the 2024/25 season that not only would be under budget, but would also represent a wage bill reduced by £55 million per year going forward.

Our replacement of Erik ten Hag with another manager – we’ve chosen Julian Nagelsmann but there are obviously other candidates – means that players such as Jadon Sancho and Amad Diallo, who would likely be sold this summer, could be afforded a second chance.

The theoretical squad has two strong players in each position and would be supplemented by other young stars with first team experience, such as Willy Kambwala, Tyrell Malacia, Alvaro Fernandez-Carreras and Omari Forson.

Key to this model is the sale of Marcus Rashford, which not all fans will agree with. However much we might like to stick with a local player and academy product, Rashford is by far the most valuable asset and also one of United’s top earners, so his sale would facilitate a lot in terms of players coming in.

Anthony Martial will leave as his contract expires, freeing up £13 million in salary. We have also assumed that Mason Greenwood will be moved on and have estimated a £35 million transfer fee for him.

With Ten Hag going, it is probable that his talisman, Antony, will be offloaded too, with our estimate of his market potential a mere £25m. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire are the other stars expected to fetch a similar amount on the market.

With the rest released on a free, ending their contracts, or for token amounts, this makes a total in transfer revenue of £221 million and a reduction in annual wage bill of £133 million. These two amounts were added to the reported £100m transfer kitty to reach a total figure of £454 million to spend on transfer fees and salaries of incoming stars.

This is a huge amount at INEOS’s disposal.

Our suggested purchases are just that – suggestions, based on players United have been linked with, their release clauses or reported asking prices and so on. Our aim was to have two strong options in each position.

The goalkeeping department has been left as it is, other than releasing Tom Heaton.

A top-class right back such as Jeremie Frimpong would be a great addition and provide competition and cover for Diogo Dalot. Likewise, Bournemouth’s excellent young Milos Kerkez, who impressed against the Reds again yesterday, would be an excellent understudy for Luke Shaw at left back.

We have chosen Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Sporting’s Gonçalo Inacio as a right-footed and left-footed centre back, but there are many alternatives on the market. Victor Lindelof stays on as Todibo’s backup and Lisandro Martinez would battle it out with Inacio for the left spot.

In midfield, players such as Khephren Thuram, Morten Hjulmand and Youssouf Fofana would offer an instant upgrade on current options without breaking the bank. Similar stars such as Atalanta’s Ederson could also be considered.

Bruno Fernandes keeps his place in our model, with Mason Mount as cover in his position and in various others.

With Sancho returning to provide competition for Alejandro Garnacho on the left wing, a right winger is needed. Our selection is Nico Williams, with Amad Diallo as his understudy. All four can play both wings so cover is strong.

That leaves a second centre forward. Last year’s target Benjamin Sesko is a great option and represents decent value for money with his £42 million release clause. He also fits INEOS’s desired profile of young, hungry stars with massive potential.

This is all, of course, fantasy football. But it is meant to offer hope based on logic that a thorough rebuild that could transform the club is possible in one summer, given the will and skill of INEOS to do so.

The figures we played with:

Two-time Champions League winner could be INEOS' shrewdest signing of the summer - opinion https://thepeoplesperson.com/2024/04/13/could-out-of-favour-dani-caballos-do-a-job-for-manchester-united-next-season-278797/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 14:00:59 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=278797 Manchester United are expecting a busy summer with INEOS guiding the club…

Manchester United are expecting a busy summer with INEOS guiding the club through their first transfer window in charge of the sporting structure.

Erik ten Hag’s squad is in need of major surgery and plenty of incomings and outgoings are predicted at Old Trafford.

However, with FFP regulations tighter than ever coupled with United’s reckless spending over the last decade, INEOS will have to look for deals that make economical sense in the market.

One player that looks likely to be available in the summer who could represent decent value is Real Madrid star, Dani Ceballos.

As reported by Spanish media, Ceballos is open to a move in the window after becoming disillusioned with life at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 27-year-old hasn’t featured as much as he’d like this season, finding himself out-of-favour in Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded midfield.

Given the quality at Ancelotti’s disposal one could be forgiven for thinking Ceballos just doesn’t meet the standards required to play for Madrid.

However, his season has been interrupted by a couple of frustrating injuries, one of which cost him his pre-season, and the Spaniard ultimately hasn’t recovered.

Ceballos chalked up ample game time last season and looked as though he was going to be a key part of Ancelotti’s side one more, this.

Lack of minutes this year has diminished his market value, which now stands at a reported €8 million, which could work in United’s favour should they decide to take a punt on the player.

However, a punt it would be given Ceballos up-and-down spell in his previous stint in the Premier League with Arsenal, which ultimately didn’t work out as planned.

But, a Liga title and Champions League triumph in 2012/22 means he would come back to England with valuable experience and a point to prove.

Ceballos is also now a fully fledged Spanish international with 13 caps to his name for La Roja.

United have been devoid of any structure in the middle of the park throughout a disappointing campaign and Ceballos would certainly add extra quality to the first team squad.

Furthermore, United are likely to lose at least one of the players in their engine room in the summer with Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Scott McTominay’s futures looking less than secure.

Whilst he might not have the quality to take United to the next level, Ceballos does represent a decent option to fill in for 15-20 games a season.

Furthermore, Madrid would probably be happy to cash in on an unhappy body in the summer, particularly given the embarrassment of riches they have in middle of the park.

INEOS will naturally have their eye on a statement signing or two in their first transfer window at the club but would be wise to keep an eye on the Ceballos situation, who could prove to be a really shrewd piece of business for the new minority owners.

The post “We are unstoppable”: Erik ten Hag’s stubbornness is Manchester United’s biggest problem appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Manchester United lost yet another game yesterday against a very poor Chelsea side, having had the lead nine minutes into injury time.

Yesterday we covered post-match comments made by manager Erik ten Hag to TNT Sports, in which he claimed United “dominated the game” and “were brilliant.”

It is certainly not what United fans saw.

Whilst it is true that once again, injuries to two centre backs and two soft penalties meant luck was not on United’s side, nonetheless, the match was another example of a performance lacking in strategy, tactics, organisation and unity.

One decision Ten Hag made was to drop Marcus Rashford for Antony, who himself has had a season dogged by poor form and off-pitch distractions.

It is true that the Brazilian was by no means the worst player on the pitch, but it seemed curious that the manager spent a big chunk of his post-match press conference singing his praises, particularly since he was responsible for conceding an early penalty with a clumsy challenge in the area.

“All our players were a danger, Garnacho, Antony, he was very good. I said it before, in the last weeks, he’s progressing,” Ten Hag said.

“You see it in training, you see it when he come on against Liverpool, also against Brentford, he’s stepping up, he’s understanding the message, he’s progressing, so we’re pleased with that.”

There seems to be a favouritism regarding Antony that Jadon Sancho alluded to when he had his famous falling out with Ten Hag. Meanwhile, one of the real heroes against Liverpool, Amad Diallo, once again sat on the bench for the whole 100 minutes, while another, Mason Mount, was only introduced late in the game.

Another obsession that the Dutchman has is that United are a “transition” team, basing the play on swift counter-attacks. At the start of this season, he inexplicably abandoned the more possession-based formula that brought so much success last season to pursue this fantasy.

Again on this, at the post-match presser (via Hayters TV), his comments seemed delusional.

“It’s our strength how we score from counters,” he said.

“We can be such a massive threat, we have seen today again an example of how with tempo we can beat our opponents.

“We are unstoppable.”

We are not unstoppable, Erik. We have been stopped more times this season than in virtually any other in the club’s history.

Aside from the questionable decision to do a complete 180 on last season’s system, the transition tactic requires United to soak up pressure, which is madness when the defence has to be changed every week, where a new goalkeeper had to settle in, and when key players such as Casemiro are built for possession-based football and not at all suited to a transitional style.

It is madness to pursue this style when your best weapon in terms of pace, Marcus Rashford, is off form and when you have only one fit centre forward to do the amount of running required for it for most of the season.

In fact, one of Ten Hag’s excuses for the poor season has been the number of injuries, but the tactics he is employing require massive physical endurance and stamina and the exhaustion caused by that, in itself, could have been a major factor in the number of injuries sustained.

Whatever happens from now on with Ten Hag and his management of Manchester United, one thing is clear from this season: he is an incredibly stubborn man. He will stick to something doggedly if he believes it is right despite all evidence to the contrary.

Sometimes, that can be a great asset, but sometimes, it can be your undoing.

]]>

With Champions League qualification all but technically over, Manchester United’s only hope of salvaging something from one of their worst seasons of the Premier League era is winning the FA Cup.

As far as the Premier League goes, the players appear to have given up and terrible performances such as that against Brentford on Saturday have become the norm.

The only good that can come out of United’s remaining nine Premier League games is to find some pride, to entertain the supporters and to plant some seeds that could sprout in 2024/25.

Frankly, an axe should be taken to the pitiful, embarrassing, couldn’t-give-a-flying-you-know-what team that is a disgrace to the legacy of the Busby Babes.

In its stead, here is the kind of team that should be given a chance to salvage something from the year of hell.

In goal, Andre Onana keeps his place. He struggled at the start of the season and almost single-handedly cost United their Champions League place, but he has found his feet now and has that fire in his belly that so many other team members seem to lack.

Right back Diogo Dalot also keeps his place – just. He has been one of the most consistent players this season and certainly the most improved. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has so much talent but has zero concentration skills and arguably should not play for Manchester United again.

At centre back, let’s have a proper look at Willy Kambwala. He’s played some minutes and looked composed and classy. It would solve a huge problem if, between now and the end of the season, he can demonstrate his ability to play football at Premier League level, as United could then perhaps walk away from £100 million deals for the likes of Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and spend the money on other areas of the pitch.

Kamwala could partner Lisandro Martinez, whose presence, personality and aggression in the heart of the United defence has been sorely missed this season.

As for Rapha Varane, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, enough is enough. We can only blame so much on coaches this season, their defending has been shocking. Out you go. Jonny Evans does tick the box for passion, pride and commitment, but let’s look to the future with Kambwala.

At left back, in the absence of Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Alvaro Fernandez, let’s give youngster Harry Amass a chance to show off his talents. Signed from Watford back in August, the 17 year old is oozing with potential and has been sensational for the Under 18s this season.

In midfield, keeping Kobbie Mainoo is a no-brainer if we chalk his poor performance against Brentford down to the after-effects of the illness that caused him to miss training. Beside him, Mason Mount should be given a chance. He scored on Saturday and seemed to instantly inject energy when coming on.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Sofyan Amrabat and especially Scott McTominay, who is supposed to be Mr Manchester United, bursting with pride for the shirt, have all looked like they couldn’t give a toss whether they win or lose. Let’s clear out this deadwood.

Further up the pitch, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund should keep their places. Whatever complaints might be levelled at Fernandes, nobody can question his work rate and will to win. Along with Mainoo, Garnacho and Hojlund have been a breath of fresh air and represent the future of Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford’s attitude, on the other hand, has got to have been one of the worst of all this season. Rashford took to social media a few weeks ago to hit back at those questioning his commitment. Goal droughts happen to players, but what are we supposed to think, Marcus, when you don’t track back, when you don’t make runs, when as a winger you have averaged 0.1 accurate crosses per game this season, when you have only made one tackle every two games, when you have only made one interception every 10 games, and less than two successful dribbles per game? (Stats via sofascore.com).

Rashford, Antony (who does at least track back) and, should he ever be fit anyway, Anthony Martial do not deserve a place in the team for the rest of the season. Perhaps the match-winning hero against Liverpool, Amad Diallo, should finally be given a run in the team to show us what he can do.

It seems fair to say the fans have had enough. Two years ago, interim manager Ralf Rangnick said United need “open heart surgery“. He was blasted for the comments at the time, but he was right. With the season a write-off, now is the perfect time for the surgeon to pick up his scalpel and get to work.

Our “salvage something” XI, then, looks like this:

United must pursue defensive monster who could be the "backbone" of any team in Europe - opinion https://thepeoplesperson.com/2024/03/31/manchester-united-must-pursue-john-clair-todibo-this-summer-278283/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 19:30:56 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=278283 Manchester United in 2024 have holes all over the pitch and this…

The post Manchester United must pursue Jean-Clair Todibo this summer appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Manchester United in 2024 have holes all over the pitch and this was brutally shown in yesterday’s insipid draw against Brentford.

One area that is in desperate need of some attention from new owners INEOS is that of the centre back position.

There are numerous defenders at the club who have an incredibly foggy future such as Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

Not only that but no team in 2024 has conceded more shots on goal in the Premier League than Erik ten Hag’s side.

Naturally the Mancunian club have been linked to a plethora of defensive reinforcements and four of the most commonly rumoured centre back targets will be assessed here. The potential candidates to partner Lisandro Martinez in August are Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer, Jean-Clair Todibo and Antonio Silva.

Playing Style

One thing that INEOS have been keen to stress is that gone are the days where the manager has total control over playing style.

Therefore, until a sporting director and the recruitment team is finalised, it is impossible to say what exactly that style will be. However, it is logical to assume that it will be a modern ball-playing style that the best sides in the Premier League implement.

Moreover, having Andre Onana between the sticks and Lisandro Martinez as the main centre back, ball playing proficiency should be a top priority for the defensive target.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was Branthwaite’s coach last year when he was at PSV Eindhoven described the 21 year old as “good on the ball, can play on the left or the right of centre-back because he is two-footed. He has height and speed, so he is very complete”.

However, nobody would sensibly suggest that the Carlisle man is as good on the ball as Martinez is. In addition as a left-footed centre back, it could be problematic to play him alongside United’s Argentine butcher.

Another candidate is that of Bremer, who like Branthwaite, his physical attributes stand out. The Brazilian is certainly good on the ball but it is his “defensive awareness and traits, such as tackling, interceptions, blocks, applying pressure and clearances” that make the 27 year old so sought after. He is also a right footer which would allow him to slot in next to Martinez.

Another potential defensive solution is Jean-Clair Todibo who has been described as ” balanced as any centre back is allowed to be, a key figure in build-up and in snuffing out threats”.

“In possession, he is as comfortable as any defender in the world, standing out with his ability to ball-carry and pass, to beat the press innovatively, to be the backbone of a possession-heavy side”.

What’s more his right footedness would allow him to play the right centre back role with comfort.

The final candidate is that of Antonio Silva from Benfica. The 20 year old has been a revelation for the Portuguese giants and has shown this season why he is one of the most talented young prospects in world football.

“Silva is a ball-playing defender. He likes to pass the ball from the back. The defender completes 8.23 long passes per 90, putting him in the 94 percentile” in the Portuguese league. However, he has more to his game than this. He is described as a “no nonsense defender” who loves a tackle and at 1.87 m has the physical prowess to deal with the Premier League. The Portuguese certainly seems alongside, Todibo, to be the most balanced of the four, as well as being most comfortable on his right foot.

Verdict: Silva and Todibo

Price

The Red Devils, like all of English football teams nowadays live in a world of financial constraint due to Profit and Sustainability rules.

As mentioned earlier, United also have a multitude of issues to try and solve in this summer’s transfer window, so not all the budget can go on a centre back and this is where it gets complicated.

Silva looks a great potential buy but it will be incredibly expensive. Benfica sell but they sell at their price and with a contract until 2027, they have no pressure to release their prized asset. It has been relayed that United are “best prepared” to sign the Portugal international but with a release clause of €100m it could be incredibly expensive to prise the starlet away from Lisbon.

Branthwaite will also cost a pretty penny. It has been reported that any team wanting to steal away the England defender may need to be pay an astronomical £80 million.

Bremer will be cheaper, as he reportedly has a pact that he can leave for €60-70m this summer but it is still quite an outlay.

Todibo on the other hand seems to have a much more reasonable fee. Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed that that Nice will let the player leave for around £40m and with his parent club also being owned by INEOS, this would surely grease the wheels of any deal.

Verdict: Todibo

Age and Experience

Bremer is the clear winner in terms of experience at being 27 years old, however, also goes against INEOS’ reported new ethos of buying players before they become established experienced ones.

Branthwaite and Silva certainly fit this model much better but at 21 and 20 respectively, but they are both incredibly inexperienced and there is still a big question mark in regard to their future trajectory as players.

At 24 years old, Todibo once again, seems the most balanced option. He is young enough to keep progressing and be hungry enough to step up from Nice to United but has also had more than a couple of seasons of topflight football.

One charge against the Frenchman could be that he has only played in Ligue 1 but there is a strong history of French-based players adapting to the Premier League effectively.

Verdict: Todibo

All in all, Nice’s French centre back seems the most sensible deal for INEOS to pursue. They know the player well and he is a balanced, ball playing, modern centre back. At 24 years old and a likely price tag of £40m, he is of the right age and certainly has an attractive price tag for a club looking to fix numerous positions under PSR restrictions.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a summer swoop for Crystal Palace’s French winger, Michael Olise.

On paper, the move looks smart. The 22-year-old is young and has the talent to be one of the stars of the Premier League. This is exactly the profile of player that INEOS are looking for as they aim to build the next stars instead of simply just purchasing them ready-made.

Olise has six goals to his name in this campaign and is also a very creative, versatile midfielder who can operate off the wing or through the middle.

Moreover, he is thought to have a release clause of around £55 million.

The winger is even said to be a Manchester United fan , so it really seems to be the perfect transfer and logical that he is reportedly the club’s “only approved” target for the summer, even with no sporting director yet in place as negotiations for Dan Ashworth rumble on in the background.

However, there is one pretty big catch. His injury record. The exciting attacker missed 13 matches last season with a hamstring injury and already has missed seven games this campaign due to the same medical issue.

The Crystal Palace boss, Oliver Glasner, has confirmed that the player is close to a return but his injury record could prove to be a stumbling block should a bigger club come calling this summer.

Therefore, it is perhaps prudent that United look elsewhere in case Olise cannot shake off his injury problems. Here are three suggestions the club could look into.

Nico Williams

The Spaniard is not as versatile as Olise and can only play off the wings. However, at 21 years old, he fits INEOS’ profile right down to a tee.

He is described as “a winger, especially on the left side, Nico utilizes his speed and dribbling skills to outmanoeuvre defenders, providing crosses and taking shots. He can also play on the right, cutting inside to unleash powerful shots with his dominant foot. Known for his involvement in team plays, he combines well with teammates, offering support and displaying versatility by changing positions with other attackers.”

His ability to link up and assist would stand in positive comparison to Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony’s shoot-first policy, even though United’s young Argentine is taking steps to improve this to his credit.

Williams is a goal threat but at the same time, is incredibly creative. He has six goals and 13 assists in 29 matches this season for Athletic Bilbao and only seems to be getting better.

As a result of his fine progress, the electric winger has become a mainstay in Spain’s national squad and will no doubt be a key man for his national team in the summer.

The winger has been linked with United in the past and with Real Madrid reportedly out of the picture, the path to the player is a bit clearer.

A drawback could certainly be the price as it was reported back in December that the player could cost up to €100m but this figure seems unrealistically high.

A bigger obstacle may be trying to prise a Basque player away from Bilbao, which is always tough. However, with the trajectory of the player, it certainly seems worth trying from United’s perspective.

Dani Olmo

The previous week has seen an increase in links to another Spaniard, Dani Olmo.

“Manchester United could look to sign RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dani Olmo during the 2024 summer transfer window as an alternative to their current targets at Old Trafford, according to GIVEMESPORT sources”.

The Bundesliga player is perhaps a better like-for-like substitute for Olise as he can also operate from a more central area. However with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, fresh from his goal last night, currently in the squad, it may seem a little redundant to have yet another central attacking midfielder.

Olmo has a release clause of £52m and at 25 years old, has more experience to fall back on than either Olise or Williams.

He is also productive having scored seven goals and created another four in 20 games this season in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

The Spaniard is described as an “effective one-on-one dribbler”, who is a “composed finisher” and “benefits from making intelligent, delayed runs around a lone striker”.

However, his final ball is often criticised for needing more work and at 25, it is unclear whether this will ever improve.

Donyell Malen

The final alternative to Olise has been linked to Old Trafford much more frequently than the others in question.

When it was first rumoured that Jadon Sancho could be returning to Borussia Dortmund, numerous reports of swap deals with Malen moving the opposite side surfaced.

While these didn’t work out, rumours of a move to England for the Dutchman have not disappeared.

INEOS have apparently earmarked the player to strengthen the right wing and his price would be around €60m according to reports.

He has had a productive season to date with 13 goals and five assists in all competitions. At 25, like Olmo, he is experienced yet still has time to develop and improve as a player.

However, in a similar way to Olmo, the two players certainly do not have the growth potential or ceiling of players like Williams or Olise.

Kobbie Mainoo is the man of the moment. It is hard to believe that by the end of last season, he did not even have a full 90 minutes of senior football under his belt.

His first start for United came on 10th January last year against Charlton Athletic in the League Cup. He started that match in the number 10 position and played for an hour.

He then came on for 17 minutes as a sub in another cup victory, this time against Reading in the FA Cup. That was on 28th January 2023.

His third and final appearance last season was his Premier League debut, 10 minutes against Leicester City, again in an attacking midfield role. That was on 19th February.

All three matches were won by United.

Everyone was impressed with what they saw and fans licked their lips in anticipation of seeing him develop on United’s pre-season tour. Erik ten Hag was also clearly excited, starting Mainoo against none less than Real Madrid in Houston, pitching him against the likes of Bellingham, Modric, Tchouameni and Camavinga, on July 27th.

But a freak injury picked up after just two minutes of that game was to keep him out of action until 26th November, when he finally made his return in the 3-0 Premier League victory over Everton.

From that point on, it has been a fairy tale. From academy hopeful to likely England starter in Euro 24 in four months. It has been quite some rise. His debut came after just 20 senior games for United this season in addition to those three from last.

We all just “feel it” with Mainoo. What comes across so strongly is his groundedness, the old head on young shoulders. He may only be 18 and he may only have played that handful of games, but he plays with such composure and maturity and makes the game look effortless.

If you are an England supporter, the thought of the Three Lions playing Euro 24 with a midfield trio of Mainoo, Rice and Bellingham is a mouthwatering one. But as a United fan, I’m not sure it’s what I want to see.

If 2023/24 has taught us anything, it’s that we need to find ways to reduce the number and severity of injuries at United and a common accusation levelled at Ten Hag and his coaches is that players are being pushed too hard.

Without that pre-season, Mainoo had to hit the ground running in November and it has been relentless since. That will be taking its toll. The last thing he needs is to be playing through the summer in a hotly-contested international tournament. He may have an old head on young shoulders, but they are just 18 year old shoulders and 18 year old legs. His body is still growing and developing and needs to be cosseted and nurtured.

Watching him help England to a successful summer would, for sure, be a buzz, but I for one would rather be looking at Instagram photos of him messing around on a beach somewhere.

This season has in many ways been a write-off for United – to a large extent due to those aforementioned injuries. The good things that has come out of it is the nucleus of an incredibly gifted future United side, with Mainoo at the heart of it and the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund alongside him, possibly also Amad Diallo too.

If INEOS can buy well this summer and add similar young talents to the United squad, 24/25 could be the start of something very special. For that to happen, Mainoo needs to be fresh and champing at the bit for action, not battle-scarred and weary after dragging England through a gruelling European Championships.

The post The five areas Manchester United must address this summer – Defensive Midfield appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

As part of a series exploring where Manchester United need to focus their recruitment drive this summer, The Peoples Person will offer five articles across five days, explaining why a particular position must be prioritised, and why a specific player is the ideal target for the role.

An article a day until any worries about the United squad drift away.

With the upcoming transfer window constituting the first major test of the INEOS revolution at Old Trafford, it is imperative the club’s new leadership structure hit the mark this summer with new signings. And with uncertainty over the long-term future of Erik ten Hag likely to continue until the end of the season, any players INEOS identify will have to possess quality and tactical flexibility in equal measure, to account for a potential managerial change.

So too will budgetary restraints be a factor.

As explained in greater detail here, INEOS are expected to be armed with a considerable war-chest for their first transfer window, but five different areas needing five different solutions means the club will need to be mindful with their money. The Peoples Person anticipate a budget in the region of £250 million, helped by sales and expensive contracts coming to an end.

The previous editions in the series have covered much-needed options at centre-back, left-back, right-wing and centre-forward. Today’s piece, the last of the series, analyses the most difficult decision United must upgrade this summer in terms of an upgrade – defensive-midfield.

A Soft Belly

Despite much attention being drawn to the issues at both ends of the United team, given the injury crisis in defence and a misfiring attacking line, the biggest problem for Ten Hag this season has actually been in the centre of the pitch.

United’s midfield are simply too easy to play through. They struggle to contain opposition counter-attacks and look susceptible to pace and power. The porous nature of the midfield is further exacerbated by enormous gaps between the three units, essentially inviting opposition players to cut through United at will.

When this vulnerability is combined with an injury-ravaged defence, it produces some of the abject displays United fans have been forced to endure this year.

Injuries have not been limited to defenders, with a number of key midfielders spending time on the side line, but even when the first-choice unit has been fit, the same problems have been present.

Much has been made in recent months about the number of shots opposition sides take on United’s goal, but this is not a new phenomenon.

United began the season by welcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers to Old Trafford. Though they emerged as 1-0 victors, Ten Hag’s side were extremely lucky to win, with Wolves dominating for large parts of the match. In the end, they produced the most shots on the United goal by an away side since 2005. And this was with Ten Hag’s professed first-choice midfield trio – Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes.

Rather than this being opening day nerves or the teething issues of a new-look unit with Mount taking Christian Eriksen’s spot, it should, with hindsight, have been a warning; a tell-tale sign of a system not fit for purpose. As has become clearer by the week this season.

At the beginning of March, United have conceded the fourth most shots in the league. Only newly-promoted Sheffield United and Luton, along with David Moyes’ West Ham side, rank higher. In half of their matches this season, United have conceded 16 shots or more. By comparison, Arsenal, who top the table, have not faced more than 15 in a single league game.

To attribute this vulnerability to Casemiro’s legs having going, or Mount being a poor signing, or Fernandes being wasteful in possession, is myopic. While there may be some validity to each of these views, the fact that every performance this season by United, regardless of who is in midfield, has shown the same midfield fragility suggests the problem is one more of structural issues, rather than personnel.

The Pressing System

Initiated last summer, a change in United’s structure is perhaps the most dramatic decision Ten Hag has made across his two seasons at United.

Despite the Dutchman being responsible for Cristiano Ronaldo being dropped (and subsequently leaving Old Trafford in a fit of petulant rage), or deciding to swap long-standing number one David De Gea for Andre Onana, and boldly removing the captaincy from Harry Maguire in favour of Bruno Fernandes, these decisions pale in comparison to the system change he has sought to implement this season.

Speaking during the club’s pre-season tour of America last summer, Ten Hag revealed his ambition to make United the “best transition team in the world”. Given the profiles and strengths of some of his key players, particularly Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, the logic behind this goal was clear.

In recent years, United have always looked at their best, and most comfortable, when launching counter-attacks with devastating speed and ruthlessness. It made sense for the Dutchman to want to continue his evolution of his new team with this reality in mind. And so he fully committed to it.

Ten Hag wanted United to become a press-heavy team who sought to dominate transitions. Rather than merely waiting for counter-attacks with a low block defensive structure, often seen under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ten Hag wanted his players to press high and press hard, to force turnovers in the opposition half.

The main targets the club recruited in the summer – Onana, Mount, and Hojlund – all possessed skillsets which lent themselves to this transitional style. A much greater emphasis on fitness began in training, designed to give the squad the stamina to be able implement it. And, of course, coordinated pressing became the obsession in tactical sessions.

However, it was a slight tweak in his midfield structure which proved the most impactful choice.

United employed a standard 4-2-3-1 structure in Ten Hag’s first season. Most often in midfield, Casemiro and Eriksen played in a double pivot, with Fernandes as a roaming number ten ahead of them. It was not perfect, but it was a radical upgrade on the ‘McFred’ combination (Scott McTominay and Fred) which characterised Solskjaer’s reign; and was sufficient to win United the Carabao Cup, regain entry into the Champions League courtesy of a comfortable third place finish in the league, and reach the final of the FA Cup.

It was an excellent debut season for Ten Hag. So why did he feel the need to change things up?

To be the best transition team in the world, you need to force as many transitions as possible. Without this, the match will not be unfolding in a manner conducive to your own success. Thus it requires an intense high-press to harass the opposition defence.

Ten Hag decided the best method to do this was to break up the Casemiro-Eriksen pivot, replacing it with a system which saw Mount and Fernandes line up as two advanced midfielders, instructed to push forward to further bolster United’s press from the front. This left Casemiro stationed as the sole line of protection in midfield; a job the Brazilian would not have been capable of when 22, let alone 32, as he turned in February.

Realistically, there is not a single defensive midfielder in the world who could perform this role, as the demands are simply too much. Casemiro is expected to help progress play from deep, while simultaneously providing protection to the defence and stopping opposition counter-attacks, without any support from his team mates.

It’s little wonder the Brazilian has transitioned from looking like one of the Premier League’s best midfielders to a player on the verge of retirement in the space of nine months. Yet, even within this downturn in form, Casemiro has remained a strong defensive presence, as demonstrated below.

When Sofyan Amrabat, signed from Fiorentina on loan, has played in Casemiro’s absence, he has looked similarly flummoxed by the role. So too has Scott McTominay. It’s a testament to the innate talent of Kobbie Mainoo that he has been able to thrive when played in defensive midfield, though the midfield still looks porous with the 18-year-old starlet at its base.

Quite evidently, Ten Hag’s system does not work. It is the reason United’s midfielders have looked varying grades of *insert expletive here* this season, rather than indictments on their individual quality.

If the Dutchman remains at the helm at Old Trafford come next year, or a new manager takes the reigns, they must fix this imbalance in the centre of the pitch if United are to improve. If not, whichever defensive midfielder they target this summer will simply fall victim to the same issues which have plagued the club’s current cohort.

No Obvious Option for the Role

With this in mind, it is difficult to conclude exactly what type of midfielder United need.

Casemiro’s form has given the impression he needs to be shipped to Saudi Arabia and replaced with a younger model. But, as discussed above, this is much more likely to be a result of Ten Hag’s system, than a dramatic decline in quality.

If given more protection, Casemiro remains a valuable asset to United.

His defensive contributions remain strong, while experience and attitude are exemplary, with Ten Hag recently revealing the 32-year-old is one of the standard setters in training. While these are not glamourous attributes which Twitter ‘tacticos’ can present on a graph, they are important; particularly in a dressing room as mentally fragile as United’s.

However, Casemiro’s legs have started to go, quite understandably at 32 years of age. A younger alternative, after the loan move for the unimpressive Amrabat proved fruitless, would help to lighten the load on the Brazilian’s legs.

In a similar fashion, it’s difficult to properly assess Mainoo, though not from any sense of worry. It’s just not obvious what profile of midfielder the prodigiously talented academy graduate will grow into. He may be a deep-lying playmaker; he may also be a creative box-to-box player. Realistically, he can likely to do both.

But finding the right compliment to Mainoo should be an important consideration when signing a new midfielder.

An interesting insight into what INEOS may want came during a recent interview with Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The club’s new co-owner was asked which player he would take from United’s past and transplant them into the current side. He replied almost immediately, “Paul Scholes”, as that is the type of player “most missing” from Ten Hag’s team at the moment.

So that leaves us needing a defensive midfielder who can function as an alternative to Casemiro, while also helping to provide the quality on the ball of the unmatchable Scholes, while further needing to be versatile enough to match the versatility of Mainoo. Perhaps we’re being as unrealistic in our midfield demands as Ten Hag has been this season.

Or are we?

The First-Choice Target

There is only one midfielder not playing for one of United’s rivals or Europe’s biggest clubs who fits the exhaustive parameters United need – Benfica’s starlet, Joao Neves.

Despite his tender years, the 19-year-old has already established himself at the heart of Roger Schmidt’s side, demonstrating a complete midfield skillset. He is as capable with the ball as without, able to effect the game in both directions with either his tenacious physicality, or his strong technical abilities.

Neves ranks in the 91st percentile for tackles and the 97th for blocks. Despite standing only 5’7, the Portuguese international (he already made his debut in October) also clocks in at the 87th percentile for successful aerial duels, demonstrating a complete defensive skillset.

Yet, Neves also ranks extremely high across possession and progression metrics as well. He sits in the 98th and 91st percentiles for attempted pass and pass completion respectively. This could mean he is a midfielder who just keeps things simple, perhaps from a lack of ability or a lack of confidence. The fact he ranks 87th for progressive passes and 89th for successful take-ons firmly dispels this idea of limited skillset, however.

Neves is a complete midfielder.

He is strong enough defensively to deputise for Casemiro and skilful enough to play alongside him. Equally, his versatility perfectly aligns with Mainoo’s; a midfield pivot of the 18-year-old English international and the 19-year-old Portuguese international is one as exciting as it is well-rounded.

So what is the catch?

Well, Benfica are notoriously difficult to do business with. Neves’ new contract with the Portuguese club, signed last summer, contains a €120 million (£103 million) release clause, and reports suggest they will not settle for a penny less than this.

Given the other targets on our summer wish list will cost somewhere in the region of £175 million, the expected transfer budget has only around £75 million left in it to sign a new midfielder; and that’s with considerable money generated through sales as it is.

It would, therefore, likely require an additional boost from Ratcliffe himself to be able to free up sufficient funds to sanction this blockbuster move. And, as explained here, the INEOS owner appears ready to do exactly that.

The Alternative[s]

It may still not be enough to secure Neves from the clutches of Benfica, however. Or, perhaps the club’s new executive structure, headed by Omar Berrada and (increasingly likely) Dan Ashworth, will decide £100 million would be better invested elsewhere, or on two midfielders rather than one.

An alternative to Neves is needed, even if that does not necessarily exist with only one player. As such, a compromise must be reached; one which prioritises one component of the Benfica star’s game.

With the fragility of United’s midfield in mind, and the need for fresher legs beside, or instead of, Casemiro, United officials should remain in Portugal to find a substitute for Neves. But will have to travel from Lisbon to Porto to do so.

Alan Varela, the 22-year-old Argentine midfield general for FC Porto, would be an excellent signing for any Premier League club, owing to his defensive strength and physical prowess. Liverpool have been closely linked with a move, with sources in Portugal describing him as the “next Javier Mascherano”.

Arsenal fans will certainly pay testament to this comparison. Mikel Arteta’s side struggled enormously in a hard-fought win over Porto in the Champions League last sixteen a few weeks ago, requiring penalties to overcome the stubborn Liga Portugal side.

Varela was excellent across both legs, particularly in the home fixture which saw Porto go 1-0 up. He constantly harassed the Arsenal midfield, causing one of the most disjointed displays Arteta’s impressive unit have produced this season. While Arsenal were much better in the second leg, Varela remained a tireless presence in front of the Porto back-four.

Principally, the 22-year-old would provide some much-needed steel and athleticism to United.

While the Porto midfielder is not particularly skilful or progressive with the ball at his feet, his 91st and 93rd percentile ranking for attempted passes and pass completion shows he is proficient in possession, if a bit unimaginative.

His signing would require Mainoo to take on much of the burden of possession in the midfield – to emulate what Scholes used to bring, as Ratcliffe described – but the 18-year-old appears capable of doing so, even if it may take some patience.

Varela’s contract is also reported to contain a £60 million release clause – a far more realistic fee than Neves’, and one which fits within the budget United are likely to be working with this summer.

Conclusion

Neves is the truth.

The 19-year-old is an elite prospect whose talent is already good enough to be a key part of a club competing for their domestic title and the Europa League, while strongly pushing for a place at Euro 2024 with the Portuguese national side.

Neves’ versatility makes him ideally suited to both Casemiro and Mainoo, while his strong physical attributes mean he should have few issues adapting to the rigours of English football.

He’s the type of signing a club sanctions to make a statement – a big-money move for a player admired by every big club in Europe, designed to transform your team from pretenders to contenders. And in the early period of the INEOS revolution at Old Trafford, Ratcliffe appears keen to make as many triumphant splashes as he can.

If the £103 million fee proves too costly, however, even for a billionaire, then Varela is a sensible alternative, who will help United in a lot of the ways Neves would have, just not all of them.

And so, that brings an end to The Peoples Person’s guide for how United should approach an essential transfer window – five targets for five positions in desperate need of upgrades.

  • Centre-Back = Jarrad Branthwaite
  • Left-Back = Miguel Gutierrez
  • Defensive-Midfield = Joao Neves
  • Right-Wing = Nico Williams
  • Centre-Forward = Jonathan David

With the club’s rivals – Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal – all already competing at the top of the table, and the prospect of Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and even Chelsea all being better than they were this season, INEOS cannot afford to miss with any of their signings this summer.

If they heed the wisdom of the list above, they’ll come away with five hits from five targets.

The post Erik ten Hag can finally unleash his best Manchester United with Lisandro Martinez’s return vs Brentford appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

It has only happened in small doses this season but the difference in Manchester United’s play with and without Lisandro Martinez has been night and day.

Fortunately, the Argentinian is potentially set to return from his latest setback against Brentford and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Tottenham and Aston Villa face a gruelling set of fixtures, United are ascending, players are returning, and a late assault for a Champions League place is in sight.

United need Martinez for every single game from now on till the end of the season to achieve that feat and history indicates that Ten Hag will finally be able to unleash the best version of his side when Martinez returns.

The release valve

You can get one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in world football but he would look underwhelming if the players he is passing to treat the ball like a ticking time bomb.

Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez are the two most press-resistant defenders in the team and their absence has forced Ten Hag into a chaotic basketball philosophy at United’s games.

As Martinez returns, United’s play can be expected to have more control than chaos. It was already visible in that brief spurt in February when United did have him in the ranks. Arguably United’s most composed performance of the season, the 3-0 home win against West Ham United, was happening when he was on the pitch.

Ten Hag has repeatedly stressed that he has had to make adjustments to account for the loss of personnel, moving away from his preferred style.

Martinez’s return will allow him to do what he does best, and in turn, unleash the true potential of the team.

Emotional leader of the team

The comeback against Liverpool was not just shocking because it was Liverpool, but because United are almost always the ones on the wrong end of those under Erik ten Hag.

This squad’s mentality and response to setbacks have been questioned incessantly and the difference that Martinez makes with his presence and his leadership on the pitch is clear to see.

Be it marshalling his troops with vocal encouragement, or setting the example by throwing his body on the line, a team of 11 Martinez-s would be a manager’s dream.

Unfortunately, Ten Hag has had to manage with zero. Finally, one is set to return. The emotional and morale boost it will provide to the team is hard to quantify statistically but will be clear to the eye.
