Alejandro Garnacho did his chances of earning a place in Argentina’s Copa America squad no harm at all with another strong display, this time against Costa Rica.

This was the first time the United man had represented his national side from the start and it will surely be an incredibly proud moment for him and his family.

The United starlet made a strong impression off the bench against El Salvador but this time, he got the chance to show off his numerous talents from the off, and did not disappoint.

He played 71 minutes, as his side came from 0-1 down, to win 3-1.

The World Champions once again dominated the ball as they enjoyed 75% of possession and took 23 shots to Costa Rica’s seven.

Just like the player has transformed himself from an impact bench player to a bona fide starter for his club, he will be hoping his performances this international break will begin to plant the seed in Lionel Scaloni’s mind.

The 19 year old started on his favourite left wing and was given a credible 7.3 for his performance from Sofascore.

The youngster was a threat on Keylor Navas’ goal as he forced two saves from the experienced keeper.

As you would expect, he used his potent combination of electric speed and close to control to dribble at his opponents and completed two of his four dribble attempts successfully.

Garnacho also put in a controlled performance on the ball, as he had 57 touches and managed to complete 33 out of his 38 passes.

This led to an impressive passing accuracy of 87% and crucially he was able to contribute two key passes during the match.

His passing accuracy was also highlighted by the completion of his three long balls.

Another impressive feature that the 2022 Youth Cup winner has added to his game this season, is his defensive work rate.

He won six out of his 12 ground duels against a team that had very little of the ball to begin with.

Garnacho will be satisfied with gaining two more caps for the South Americans and will certainly believe he has done enough to make the Copa America squad for the summer.

Only a strong finish with Manchester United will help achieve this as the winger attempts to reach double figures in goals for the first time in his career, as he is currently on seven strikes in this campaign.

Scott McTominay and Scotland were left frustrated by a stubborn Northern Ireland side who ran out 1-0 winners at Hampden Park.

It was the first win for Northern Ireland against Scotland since 1983 and the first in Glasgow in half a century.

The home side absolutely dominated the ball with a mammoth 83% possession but despite having more shots on goal, they rarely carved out any real chances of quality.

McTominay was involved early on in the proceedings as he drove at the Northern Ireland defence and was taken down by fellow United academy graduate, Paddy McNair.

However, he failed to impress with a rare opportunity from the free kick he won, as his effort cannoned back off the wall.

The rest of the half was relatively quiet for the United midfielder as he was frustrated by a disciplined Northern Irish back five.

He did however have a long range shot which fizzed wide of Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s goal in the 43rd minute.

The United midfielder continued to cut a frustrated figure throughout the second half as he got into more than one argument with the highly impressive Northern Irish fullback, Trai Hume.

McTominay was awarded a decent score of 7.2 from Sofascore and he was incredibly efficient with the ball, completing 32 out of his 35 passes.

The midfield man had 46 touches but in the context of his side dominating the ball so much, it was a poor return as he faded in and out of the game.

The 27-year-old had a frustrating night in front of goal as he failed to have a shot on target and had two blocked efforts.

He was successful in terms of ground duels, winning all six of his efforts.

The United man also completed his two dribble attempts in the first half.

However, despite finishing the night as captain, boos rang around Hampden Park as Northern Ireland held on for a famous win.

Scotland must now wait until June to right the wrongs of this result as they prepare for the start of their Euro 2024 adventure.

McTominay will hope to bounce back and play as important a role on Saturday against Brentford as he did in October, when he scored a brace that gave the Red Devils all three points.

Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo delivered a mature performance at the heart of England’s midfield on his first start for his country at Wembley this evening.

Though Mainoo earned his first cap on Saturday after coming off the bench against Brazil, he went one better tonight as the Three Lions faced off against Belgium in a friendly.

Selected by Gareth Southgate alongside Declan Rice, who captained the England for the first time on his 50th appearance, and Jude Bellingham, the 18-year-old was not phased by the magnitude of the moment in the slightest. If anything, he appeared to thrive in it.

England suffered an early set-back after Jordan Pickford’s mistake gifted Youri Tielemans an open goal, which the Aston Villa midfielder duly took full advantage of. 0-1. The Three Lions did not panic, however, and, six minutes later, Ivan Toney levelled proceedings, courtesy of a penalty won by the Brentford striker himself.

Mainoo was the architect of the move, brilliantly dancing through the Belgian midfield, after slowing on the ball to bait Tielemans, before promptly accelerating away from the Villa man. It was the type of skill associated with midfielders born in Barcelona, rather than Stockport.

The 18-year-old’s burst allowed him to find Jude Bellingham in space, who then played Toney in. Former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen rushed in to try and stop Toney, but only fouled the striker in the process.

The referee awarded a penalty and, after a quick VAR check, Toney converted from the spot. 1-1.

Mainoo continued his impressive debut for the remainder of the first-half, offering intelligent passes and skilful touches. He was less involved than he has been at the heart of United’s midfield in recent weeks, but this is understandable for a young player on the international stage for the first time; particularly when he’s alongside the established pairing of Bellingham and Declan Rice.

At half-time, Jill Scott – the former England international turned pundit – revealed how “impressed” she was with Mainoo’s “intelligence” and “link-up play”. Similarly, former Chelsea star Joe Cole paid tribute to the “balance” the trio of Rice, Mainoo, and Bellingham offered, with the United star key to this. “He was fantastic”, Cole concluded.

There were three stand out moments from Mainoo’s first-half performance, outside of his role in creating Toney’s penalty.

The first, when Mainoo lost the ball after an errant pass but aggressively tracked back to win the ball, tackling two Belgian players in the process, was a stand out. The second, an excellently timed press to nip in and win the ball ahead of Amadou Onana – the Everton man linked with a move to United himself – only for Bellingham to blaze the ball over from the chance. And the third, a cheeky nutmeg on Onana, who will likely be glad to not have to face the youngster again this season; though if the rumour mill is to be believed, the pair may be lining up alongside each other at Old Trafford next season.

Belgium regained the lead towards the end of the half after another mistake – this time by Lewis Dunk. Former United striker Romelu Lukaku capitalised on the error, delivering a brilliant cross with the outside of his foot for Tielemans to score his second with a well-taken header. 1-2.

The second-half involved much of the same – intelligent use of the ball, intelligent pressing, and intelligent positioning. Though Mainoo was quieter than the first-half, as England were worse in general, he was still positive; the type of performance which belies his age, but one which has become customary in his breakout season.

At one point it looked like Mainoo may even get his first goal, but Mats Sels – the goalkeeper for Belgium and Nottingam Forest – made a good save to deny him a dream moment.

In the 73rd minute, the United starlet was substituted for James Maddison – the applause from a subdued Wembley crowd was the loudest moment of the second-half until that point. Rob Green, the co-commentator on Channel 4, encapsulated the performance when he remarked that the 18-year-old had “walked into the midfield and taken over at times”.

A last-minute goal by Bellingham spared Southgate’s blushes to draw England level, though this performance will do little to assuage concerns about the manager’s ability to get the best out of this group.

There has been much talk of the best option to partner Rice and Bellingham at Euro 2023 this summer. Kalvin Phillips has lost his place this season at club level and international level, while neither Jordan Henderson nor Connor Gallagher have impressed in his place. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been trialled in the position with little success. It was a question without an obvious answer.

Tonight, Mainoo provided just that. Whether Southgate has the metaphorical cojones to realise it is another matter altogether.

Sweden and Victor Lindelof bounced back from their mauling at the hands of Portugal to beat Albania 1-0 in their last friendly of the spring.

In an evenly contested game, the Albanians enjoyed the majority of the first half danger moments as they scored an offside goal and thought they had won a penalty early on, but no decision was given.

However, Lindelof’s side got themselves more involved and hit the post in the first half and scored what would prove to be the winner in the 62nd minute through Gustaf Nilsson.

The Swedes had eleven shots to eight but limited their opponents to only one shot on target during the whole game.

The Scandinavians also shaded possession with 51% in favour of the home side.

Lindelof had a nightmare versus Portugal, where he and his fellow defenders were run ragged by a world-class display by Bruno Fernandes.

However, with a score of 7.3 from Sofascore, he was back to his more solid self yesterday.

The Swedish captain was a calming presence at the back and largely dealt with what was thrown his way.

He made three clearances and blocked one goal bound effort.

Lindelof was also strong in the duels, winning 75% of his ground battles and 67% of his aerial tussles.

The centre back also showed remarkable control, as he only gave away one foul all evening, as he looked to show new coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, that he is the right player to continue leading his nation in the new era.

The 29 year old was also very solid on the ball as he had 64 touches and completed 89% of his passes.

His distribution was not only safe but also threatening, as he completed one key pass in the match.

The Blågult have now finished their international commitments and will have to wait until the 5th June when they take on Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen’s Denmark in a warm-up match before the Euros start.

Unfortunately for Lindelof, neither he nor Sweden will be part of the summer action. He will instead focus his efforts on winning a regular place back in United’s first team as the Red Devils aim to win the FA Cup and finish in the Champions League spots.

Christian Eriksen and Denmark played out a 0-0 draw with Switzerland in a friendly as both sides prepare to take part in the Euro 2024 tournament this summer.

For Eriksen, it was an opportunity to get a full 90 minutes under his belt, as gametime has been scarce at Manchester United recently.

In the lead up to the game, his selection for the national side was a hotly debated topic.

Former Real Madrid and Denmark midfielder, Thomas Gravesen, claimed that he should not have been selected and that it was a “scandalous” decision.

On the other hand, both Rasmus Hojlund and the Danish coach, Kasper Hjulmand, have asserted that the 32 year old should be getting more game time at Old Trafford.

The midfielder was one of the better performers in a rather drab game and almost grabbed an assist, as his 23rd minute corner was headed back across goal and off the line by the Swiss defence.

The former Inter Milan player was involved again in the 39th minute as he lofted a beautiful ball over the Swiss backline which really should have resulted in a better chance for the Scandinavians.

Eriksen almost sent the home ground into raptures as his second half long range free kick seemed destined for the back of the net, only to be denied by the flying Yann Sommer.

He finished the night with a decent 7.1 rating from Sofascore and most of his side’s dangerous moments were orchestrated by him.

He was heavily involved on the ball, having 70 touches and completing 81% of his 53 passes.

He also took three of Denmark’s seven shots with one on target and two flying wide of the mark.

One weak spot of Eriksen’s performance was the fact he lost possession 18 times but the nature of his creative role will always result in a greater turnover of the ball, as he strives to make things happen.

A solid if not spectacular performance by Denmark will serve as good practice against a Swiss team that always play their heart out in international tournaments.

His club-and-country teammate Rasmus Hojlund also played in the match but was unable to get on the end of any of Eriksen’s passes in what was a frustrating night for him.

The Danes have the theoretically much easier task of the Faroe Islands on Tuesday night as Eriksen will aim to get another 90 minutes under his belt, so he can convince Erik ten Hag he is worthy of more minutes in the final two months of the season.

´

On an evening that was supposed to show that England could compete with the very best, a familiar trend of the Gareth Southgate era reared its head.

The Three Lions welcomed Brazil to Wembley, aiming to take advantage of the numerous injuries the South Americans were suffering and produce a famous night in London.

Unfortunately neither Harry Maguire nor his national team could. Predictably, Maguire struggled against a pacy forward line of Vinicius Junior, Raphinha and Endrick.

A late winner by Real Madrid’s new 17 year old signing proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Both teams had 14 shots on goal while the English maintained slightly more of the ball 53%.

The former United captain started at the heart of the defence with John Stones, as many expect Southgate to line up when the Euros starts for real in June.

The 31 year old’s biggest involvement of the night came in the 41st minute when he seemed destined to deal with an innocuous ball just outside the box but somehow managed to lay the ball right to Raphinha. However, the Barcelona star he shot agonisingly wide of Jordan Pickford’s right hand post to spare Maguire’s blushes.

It is these sort of actions that will not do much to convince the general public that the United man deserves his place in the England team despite his insistence that he does.

From an attacking perspective, Maguire was a threat from corners and flicked the ball on just before half time which Phil Foden was almost able to prod home.

The former Leicester man was subbed off after 67 mins and given a 6.6rating on Sofascore for his night’s work.

Maguire was not able to block any shots or make any clearances despite Brazil consistently carrying a threat all match.

He was also only able to make one interception and won 0% of his ground duels.

As mentioned previously, he made one huge error that almost led to a goal as well.

However, the United man was strong on the ball with a 96% passing accuracy and only lost the ball four times.

The defender was also able to have one shot blocked and had an effort that flew wide of the target.

Both England and Maguire will be hoping for a better showing against Belgium on Tuesday night.

Rasmus Hojlund and Denmark played out a rather dull draw as they finished 0-0 against Switzerland yesterday.

However, both sides will probably be happy with the workout as the two teams have the reputation for being stubborn opponents in the knockout stages of tournaments.

There was much talk before the game about Denmark and Manchester United’s negotiations to control Hojlund’s game time as he had only just returned from a month-long injury against Liverpool last weekend in the FA Cup.

The 21 year old had a quiet evening in a game of few chances but he did manage to create two dangerous moments for the Scandinavians.

In the 23rd minute he felt he had won his side a penalty, as he ran at the defence in a similar fashion to his goal versus West Ham last month but before he could fire off a shot, he was felled in the area. However after VAR took a look, no decision was given.

Hojlund’s best chance of the game came in the 70th minute when he beat the offside trap and galloped behind the Swiss defence.

He went one-on-one with the keeper but blazed his effort well over the crossbar when more composure was called for.

Sofascore gave the young United forward a score of 6.7, as he failed to make much of an impact on proceedings.

He played 84 minutes before being subbed off and managed two shots on goal, but both failed to call the keeper into any sort of action.

To highlight his lack of involvement, the striker only managed 12 passes but 10 found their intended target, giving him an 83% accuracy.

He also only touched the ball 27 times as he was left isolated up top.

The youngster was also unusually no threat in the air as he only competed in one aerial duel and lost it. He was also only able to win 33% of his ground battles.

He was also quite wasteful, giving the ball away nine times, just one less than the amount of successful passes he managed.

Hojlund will hope to bounce back and be significantly more involved on Tuesday night when his national side take on the Faroe Islands.

2023 was a prosperous year for him in front of goal as he scored an impressive seven goals in eight games for the Danes.

How he would love to carry that goal scoring form into the Euros tournament in the summer and the Faroes are as good an opponent as any to try and start filling his boots.

Alejandro Garnacho played the second half as Argentina ran out comfortable 3-0 winners versus El Salvador in Philadelphia yesterday.

The world champions mauled their opponents by taking 24 shots to two and enjoying an impressive 80% of the ball.

La Albiceleste took the lead through Tottenham’s Cristian Romero after 16 minutes and added their second through Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.

Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez, who was involved with the squad, flew back to Manchester before the game in preparation for his much anticipated return from injury against Brentford in a week’s time.

Therefore, United’s interest lay in 19 year old sensation, Alejandro Garnacho.

The winger has had a very successful season where he has nailed down a starting spot in the team after primarily breaking through as a bench option last season.

Such has been his form, it was reported last night that Garnacho currently is favourite to scoop the club’s prestigious Player of the Year Award.

He came off the bench to play the entire second half at the Lincoln Financial Field and was on the pitch as Argentina added their third through Giovani Lo Celso.

Garnacho made a strong impression as he was awarded with a 7.4 rating from Sofascore.

The winger had one shot on target and one shot that went wide of the goal during the half.

As you would expect, he ran successfully at tired El Salvadorian legs and completed three of his four dribble attempts.

The player was also heavily involved in an attacking sense, making two key passes and touching the ball 37 times.

Garnacho also left the field of play with an impressive passing accuracy of 91%, making 26 out of his 29 passes.

He was also very careful with the ball, only losing possession four times during the 45 minutes he was in action.

The young Argentine has spoken of his pride at representing Argentina in what was his fourth appearance for the world champions and will be hoping to make another positive impression when his country take on Costa Rica in the early hours of Wednesday morning UK time.

As was reported recently, the starlet has lofty ambitions to represent Argentina at the Copa America and or Olympic Games this summer, desperately trying to add another medal to the trophy-laden era for the South American nation.

Scott McTominay and Scotland suffered a night to forget as they lost 0-4 to the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

However, it was one of those games where the scoreline does not tell the whole story, as the Scots blew numerous chances to equalise before collapsing to concede three late goals.

The Tartan Army started brightly and finished the match with 13 shots, the same as the Dutch. Moreover, they also enjoyed a respectful 46% of the ball at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Nonetheless, if they are to make any sort of mark on the summer Euros, they will need to learn to take their chances and avoid late collapses such as this.

McTominay was involved in the midfield battle as you would expect, starting as a box-to-box midfielder.

Unfortunately, the United academy graduate got himself in trouble quite early on, receiving a yellow card for a careless high arm in only the eighth minute of play.

However, he was also on the receiving end of a poor foul by former United man, Memphis Depay, who ended up in the book alongside the Scottish international.

McTominay played his part in some nice passing moves from Scotland in the first half and enjoyed a couple of trademark charges down the field.

The biggest moment in the game for the United man came in the 47th minute when he cleverly wriggled away from the Dutch defender in the penalty box but saw his shot blocked when it looked like a certain goal.

However, all in all, like his team, McTominay huffed and puffed to no avail.

The player was given a poor 6.2 on Sofascore but did manage an impressive 91% pass accuracy and 54 touches.

Apart from the aforementioned blocked shot, McTominay’s only other attempt was off target as he rarely threatened to find the back of the net.

He struggled to win many duels as he lost eight out of his 11 ground duels, which came out to be a poor 27% duel accuracy.

He also lost the ball eight times and committed three fouls and was in danger of seeing a red card, but was saved on account of the game being a friendly.

The 27-year-old did manage to make five interceptions and also blocked one shot.

Scotland now must wait till Tuesday evening, when they take on Northern Ireland in what should be an easier assignment for McTominay and his national side.

]]>

Victor Lindelof and Sweden’s new era with coach Jon Dahl Tomasson got off to the worst possible start with a heavy defeat to Portugal.

In what was a wonderful performance from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who bagged a goal and an assist, it was a disaster class by United’s Swedish skipper, Lindelof.

Tomasson threw doubt on the defender’s future as the leader of his country when he claimed that he had to reassess all his options once taking over the reins.

However, there was good news for the centre back as it was revealed a few days ago that he would remain captain.

Elaborating on his decision Tomasson claimed, “it’s a role he’s used to. He’s a player who takes responsibility, plays in a big club and always thinks about the team”.

Unfortunately, that was the only positive from a dismal showing by the Scandinavians, who showed exactly why they will not be taking part in this summer’s Euros tournament.

Portugal won 5-2 even though both sides had 13 shots each and the home side had eight on target in comparison with the away side’s six.

The Swedes also had less of the ball with 45% to Portugal’s 55%.

From a United perspective, Lindelof had a horror show of a game where he played the full 90 minutes in a side that conceded five goals.

Sofascore gave him a 5.8 for his night’s work as he put in an incredibly passive display.

The 29 year old made three clearances and had one interception, but this was the extent of his defensive interaction.

He won zero ground and aerial duels in the match, an incredible statistic that highlights how difficult he found it to make his presence felt against the Portuguese attackers.

The Swede was much stronger on the ball however and did have a highly impressive 93% pass accuracy with 43 of his 46 passes finding their intended target.

He was also involved on the ball as he had 51 touches but failed with his one long ball attempt.

Luckily, it was only a friendly, so the result or performance has no long term relevance but it will be a disheartening way to start the Tomasson era.

The Blågult and Lindelof will aim to dust themselves down and put in a much better performance at home against Albania on Monday night.
