Manchester United U18s rounded out their regular season on Saturday morning hosting Everton.

With the Premier League North title already secured, the match served as a test to get some fitness ahead of the national final as well as introduce some of the u16s who will be stepping up to this level next season.

United looked to pounce early off of an Everton mistake when Ruben Curley won possession high up the pitch and played the ball to Gabriele Biancheri who laid off for Malachi Sharpe to curl towards the far corner but the winger’s effort was too central allowing the keeper to tip wide.

Jaydan Kamason then looked to show off his individual brilliance with a serpentining run that saw him skip past one defender before shrugging off another but ultimately the defender’s attempt on goal with his weaker foot went wide of the left post.

It was largely one way traffic with United producing the majority of the chances but it took until the 38th minute for the reds to make the breakthrough.

Zach Baumann’s shot was initially blocked into the path of Kamason who crossed back into the danger area for Biancheri to turn home from close range.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for United though as just before the break, James Nolan’s defensive header could only find the foot of an Everton player who quickly played it to Rocco Lambert to strike hard and low from a wide angle to catch Tom Myles out at the front post.

But it barely took a minute for United to restore their lead with almost a carbon copy finish from Biancheri of his first. Ruben Curley delivered a low cross from the left for the Welsh striker to run across the face of the goal and steer in at the front post.

Into the second half, Jack Fletcher came close with a long range effort that was tipped around for a corner.

The resulting corner was headed over by Finley McAllister but a lack of concentration from Everton on their goal kick saw the ball turned over to Sharpe inside the box to finish and secure a 3-1 win for United.

An impressive season, Adam Lawrence’s side finish the league top of the table with 20 wins, two draws, and only two losses.

After the match Lawrence said, “It has been a fantastic season in terms of always looking at the individuals and the group at the start of the season and it has been lovely to see how they have progressed as the season has gone on.

“It is a fantastic academy and is a fantastic place for any young player to be developing themselves on and off the pitch. As long as they’re coming in with the right attitude everyday and they’re trying to improve and get better, that is all we can really ask for.”

Lawrence and the team now look forward to taking on Chelsea to solidify themselves as the national champions.

United: Myles, Kamason, McAllister, Armer, Nolan, Devaney (Thwaites 77), Baumannm, Sharpe, J. Fletcher, Curley (Mills 84) Biancheri (Eyob-Abraha 84)

Unused subs: Murdock, Plunkett

Manchester United u21s took on Arsenal on Friday night in the first round of the Premier League 2 play-offs at Meadow Park.

United looked bright in the opening proceedings, with Ethan Williams forcing a save from Ovie Ejeheri from long range.

But Arsenal took the lead after just 14 minutes when Nathan Butler-Oyedeji his the back of the net after initially having his first shot blocked.

Arsenal skipper Jack Henry-Francis doubled the home side’s lead in the 27th minute, turning home the cross from Reuell Walters.

The wheels had come for United and Arsenal added a third just minutes later with Butler-Oyedeji setting up Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Just looking to get in the break at that point, United couldn’t keep it together, allowing a fourth just before the half time whistle. Butler-Oyedeji ran through to round Dermot Mee and finish into an open net.

Less than 10 minutes after the restart it looked done an dusted for United as Ethan Nwaneri struck the post before being fouled by Toby Collyer to earn a penalty shortly after. The winger stepped up to take it himself and slotted past Mee to make it 5-0.

Almost half way through the second half, Sam Mather produced a bit of magic to give the traveling United fans at least something to cheer about. The United winger initially won the free-kick at the edge of the Arsenal box and then showed his dead ball specialty by hitting the back of the net.

Mather came close again later in the match but was denied by a good save.

Into injury time, Arsenal added a sixth through Cozier-Duberry before United substitute Gabriele Biancheri added a consolation goal in the dying seconds.

The loss marks a disappointing end of the season for Travis Binnion’s group, who experienced a series of highs and lows throughout the campaign.

United: Mee, Kingdon, Bennett, Aljofree, Murray, Collyer (Devaney 58), Oyedele, Scanlon (Biancheri 58), Mather, Williams (Kamason 76), McNeill (Curley 75)

Manchester United u21s rounded out the Premier League 2 regular season with an unusual lunchtime kick-off on a Monday away to Southampton.

Needing a win for a chance to secure qualification to next season’s Premier League International Cup, things got off to a shaky start as Southampton scored within the opening minute.

A loose pass back by Omari Forson saw possession turned over at United’s end to launch a quick counter for Southampton, ending with Sam Amo-Ameyaw sliding the ball under Elyh Harrison.

United looked for a quick response through Ethan Williams who opened the space on the left wing, playing a one-two with Harry Amass before running 50 yards and smashing the ball off the crossbar.

Ethan Wheatley opened United’s tally in the 21st minute, taking Forson’s pass on the turn inside the box to slot inside the bottom right corner.

The striker, who recently made his first team debut, added his second just two minutes later. Sam Mather played the ball over the top for Wheatley to take down while holding off the defender and expertly sliding low past the keeper.

Southampton had the lion’s share of the possession but Harrison made two big saves to keep the score 1-2 going into the break.

Harrison couldn’t keep them out forever though and the home side equalised just before the hour mark, an unlucky deflection saw Harrison’s save bounce back off Luke Pearce and into the goal.

United were deadly in the final third on the day though and restored their lead with two goals within two minutes.

First Mather drove into the box and curled the ball into the bottom left corner before Ethan Williams tapped in the rebound from Wheatley’s shot to make it 2-4.

Williams added his second in the 80th minute when he received the cut back from Amass to side foot into an almost empty net.

A lovely pass over the Southampton backline by Jacob Devaney found Charlie McNeill, who took it down and hit it low into the bottom left corner.

Southampton’s Will Merry added a consolation goal before the end but it was too late to catch the free-scoring United.

The win brought United up to 29 points in 20 matches and sealed the 12th spot in the table. The u21s season isn’t over yet though as they now move onto the play-offs, where they will face off against fifth place Arsenal.

United: Harrison, Ogunneye, Jackson, Aljofree, Amass, McAllister, Curley (Devaney 56), Forson, Mather (Scanlon 81), Williams (Murray 86), Wheatley (McNeill 82)

Manchester United u18s hosted Sunderland at Carrington on Saturday afternoon.

Having clinched the title last week with a win over Wolves, Adam Lawrence fielded a heavily rotated side with a number of u16s stepping up to the level.

It was an eventful start to the match. With less than a minute played, Malachi Sharpe raced down the right wing towards the byline before cutting back to Bendito Mantato to open the scoring with an easy finish.

The lead didn’t last long though as just a minute later as Sunderland created an almost carbon copy of the opening goal. Rhys Walsh ran down the left side and played the ball into Aaron Chung in the centre of the box to finish past Will Murdock in goal.

United dominated possession throughout the first half but were unable to add to their tally despite chances from Gabriele Biancheri, Sharpe, and Jim Thwaites all coming close.

Into the second half, Chung gave the visitors the lead in the 56th minute when he ran through the heart of midfield before dispatching into the net.

Less than 10 minutes later, Sunderland added their third when Fin Geragusian picked up the ball on the left wing and centred to Joseph Neild to apply the first time finish.

United threw a flurry of attacks at Sunderland to get back into it but it wasn’t until almost the 90th minute that they managed to carve open a big chance for Sharpe to come close with. Receiving the ball inside the box following some intricate passing, the winger’s shot was tipped just wide by the Sunderland keeper.

Into injury time, the ball fell kindly to Biancheri who thought he could poke it in, but his effort was cleared off the line by some fantastic last-ditch defending.

Lawrence’s side finish the Premier League North campaign next week at home to Everton before they round out the season with the national final, which is yet to have a scheduled date.

United: Murdock, Nolan, Mills, Armer, Plunkett (Kukonki 82), Baumann, J.Fletcher, Sharpe, Thwaites, Mantato, Biancheri

Manchester United u21s picked up a point away to Nottingham Forest despite a poor performance. Here are our player ratings for the match.

Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Elyh Harrison – 8 – The clear man of the match, United can thank him for earning a point on the night. Made six saves, the majority of which were from inside the box and he had little business stopping. One stop in particular was exceptionally good as he stood tall and waited until the last moment to commit with the striker bearing down on him. The only blemish on his performance was a few sloppy passes out from the back. Might make Altay Bayindir redundant next season at this rate!

Jaydan Kamason – 4 – A night to forget for the 17-year-old, he had a really tough time with Detlaf Esapa Osong drifting wide and making runs in behind him. Only his second appearance at u21s level, he wasn’t used to the increased speed of the game and was looking for too much time and space with the ball which wasn’t given and led to a number of turnovers.

Rhys Bennett – 5 – Playing next to the inexperienced Kamason, he wasn’t able to offer enough support to cut out the constant danger in the channel between them which left a lot of openings for Forest.

Sonny Aljofree – 6.5 – Found himself in a bit of a 1v1 battle throughout the 90 minutes with Ateef Konaté and handled himself well. A skilful player and experienced at 23, Konate couldn’t get much change from Aljofree and was visibly annoyed by the end of the match as Aljofree exchanged words after their battles with a smile on his face.

Sam Murray – 6.5 – A solid performance, he defended well and in particular did well to get out and block crosses consistently. Also composed on the ball without offering a great attacking threat.

Jacob Devaney – 6 – Couldn’t really get his foot on the ball in midfield but did well defensively and often dropped deep to help cover Forest’s dangerous left side.

Ruben Curley – 5 – Never really got into the match as it passed by United’s entire midfield.

James Scanlon – 5 – Looked visibly tired from the off and was easily muscled off the ball when he received it. But with three matches in the last 7 days, it is understandable as he has played a lot of football this season for a 17-year-old.

Maxi Oyedele – 4 – Another poor match for Oyedele as he offered little control in the number 10 position with sloppy touches and erratic passing. His lack of effort was most striking late on when McAllister was pressing higher up the pitch while simultaneously tracking back deeper as well.

Sam Mather – 5 – Had a few openings on the left wing but either had his shots blocked or failed to find a teammate before completely drifting out of the match.

Charlie McNeill – 6.5 – A lone bright spark in attack for most of the match, he was left to do it all himself and almost did. His effort to chase down balls opened up chances for him, having a chance cleared off the line and hitting the post but he ultimately couldn’t quite find the finish.

Substitutes

Ethan Williams – 6.5 – Did more than the other wings combined in just half an hour with his directness and pace. Provided some good deliveries into the box too, one of which McNeill directed off the post.

Finley McAllister – 6 – Added a bit of much-needed energy in the middle of the park and looked to press high and offer support in attack.

Jack Kingdon – N/A – Not on the pitch long enough.

Gabriele Biancheri – N/A – Only on for the final minutes but still drew a yellow card with a good run down the left wing.

Manchester United U21s travelled to Loughborough University on Friday night to take on Nottingham Forest in Premier League 2 action.

With the season approaching the end, United were looking for a result to ensure they finished within the top 16 to advance to the play-offs.

The opening stages saw the match go back and forth as both sides looked to find their feet and it was Charlie McNeill who created the first big chance when he chased down a long ball to win the ball in Forest’s area before rounding the keeper and striking towards the open goal but the recovering defender made a magnificent goal line clearance.

The match then became one-way traffic for the most part as Forest threatened and United struggled to get any sort of passing game going under the press of Warren Joyce’s home side.

The lone spark for United was McNeill who latched onto another ball before working space into Forest’s box and striking low but he was denied by a good save.

Forest’s danger man Detlef Esapa Osong was causing all sorts of trouble, especially when he drifted out to United’s righthand side. Forest’s number nine hit the back of the net just after the 40th minute but it was quickly ruled out for offside.

Osong then came close again just before the halftime break, forcing a top save from Elyh Harrison.

Into the second half, it was much of the same as United continued to look sloppy in possession and unable to keep up with Forest’s intensity.

Jaydan Kamason lost the ball at the back to give Forest a chance but Sam Murray was on hand to make an important block.

Osong then cut through United coming inside from the left to shoot from 10 yards out but he was denied again by a strong hand from Harrison.

Substitute Ethan Williams added a bit of life to the attack for United and provided a delightful cross for McNeill who poked towards goal, hitting it off the right post.

Late in the match, Osong was played in behind down the left again but despite many chances, he still couldn’t find a way to beat Harrison in goal who walked away as the clear man of the match.

With the match edging towards a close, an over-the-top challenge from Jamie Newton on Sam Murray saw the Forest substitute see a straight red card in injury time.

Fortunately, Murray was back on his feet quickly but there was no time for United to use the man advantage and the match ended 0-0.

The draw was enough to clinch a playoff berth for United though as they remain in 15th place with one match remaining. A top 12 finish to qualify for the Premier League International Cup next season is still technically within reach for United but it will require results to go their way on the final matchday.

United: Harrison, Kamason (Kingdon 86), Bennett, Aljofree, Murray, Devaney, Curley (McAllister 63), Scanlon (Williams 63), Oyedele, Mather, McNeill (Biancheri 86)

Unused subs: Plumley

Manchester United u18s took on Manchester City on Tuesday night in the Premier League Cup final.

A week on from securing the Premier League North title, Adam Lawrence’s side were looking to complete the double by winning the Premier League Cup for the first time ever.

With a strong line up that saw Harry Amass, Habeeb Ogunneye, Ethan Wheatley, Louis Jackson, and Jack Kingdon all drop back down after recent involvement with Erik ten Hag’s first team, United got off to a strong start.

Early efforts from Ethan Williams and Ruben Curley laid down the marker before Ethan Wheatley gave United the lead in just the 7th minute.

From a free kick at the halfway line, James Nolan sent Wheatley the ball in the right channel to take one touch before smashing the ball on the volley past the keeper from a tight angle.

Farid Alfa-Ruprecht looked lively on City’s left wing but it was United who added a second in the 25th minute.

Elyh Harrison drew City forward before kicking long to James Scanlon who flicked onto Nolan to play Wheatley through again. He rounded the keeper this time and dispatched into the goal.

City began to take control of the possession after United’s second goal which saw the tempo of the match slow down and United fall deeper, but despite the possession, City were unable to create anything of note in the first half.

The half time break saw Lawrence make wholesale switches as Amass, Wheatley, and Jackson departed with Erik ten Hag reportedly keen for them to be involved with the first team against Sheffield United but also wanting them to experience the cup final.

The second half started as the first ended with City controlling the ball but United posing the bigger threat on the counter.

Scanlon crossed to Gabriele Biancheri who took the ball on his head before rifling a shot off the outside of the right post.

Jacob Devaney then came close to rounding the City keeper who did well to get a hand on the ball to cut out the chance created by Scanlon.

As the match entered the latter stages, United’s tiredness began to show as they relentlessly ran throughout the match. The fatigue was evident when United were caught out in the 85th minute by a quick corner that found Stephen Mfuni in the box to head past Harrison.

There were nail-biting scenes in the dying moments as Harrison was called into action not once but twice, making incredible saves to keep United’s lead and reach the final whistle.

But the resilient and tactically professional performance saw United’s u18s secure the win to raise the Premier League Cup for the first time, despite being forced into a number of early substitutions to key players.

The cup win sees United achieve the league and cup double over Manchester City, who have finished second place in both competitions.

United: Harrison, Nolan, Jackson (Mantato 46), Kingdon, Amass (Ogunneye 46), McAllister, Curley (Devaney 64), Scanlon, J.Fletcher (Lacey 72), Williams, Wheatley (Biancheri 46)

Manchester United u21s picked up a hard-fought draw away to top-of-the-table Tottenham Hotspur. Here are our player ratings for the match.

Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Dermot Mee – 7 – Made a number of key saves and was very proactive in rushing out of his goal in particular.

Jaydan Kamason – 6 – Looked hesitant on the ball and didn’t get up to support enough in possession as we struggled to gain control in the first half. But he slowly worked his way into it and improved as the match went on.

Jack Kingdon – 6.5 – Strong defending in the box with one goal-saving last-ditch block. In possession, he moved the ball well but could have been quicker releasing at times.

Sonny Aljofree – 6 – A decent performance defensively, he made some good blocks and was strong aerially but was unusually sloppy in possession.

Sam Murray – 6.5 – Good defending against a tough opponent and keeping possession down the left side well.

Finley McAllister – 6 – Kickstarted some good counters with quick crisp passing and was lively joining the break but he got overrun in midfield in the deeper areas. Struggled a bit with his positioning on when to drop and when to push which allowed Tottenham too much time on the ball in the first half and could be seen going through it with the coaching staff after being substituted.

Ruben Curley – 7 – A wonderful strike for his goal, it was a good all-around performance from Curley. He got stuck in with tackles in midfield and was key to launching counterattacks as he covered every blade of grass.

Maxi Oyedele – 4.5 – A very poor performance as he offered no control in the number 10 spot. The match seemed to almost pass him by offensively and defensively as he lacked the intensity to keep up with the fast breaks in both directions. Travis Binnion could be heard shouting at him throughout as he failed to apply his role in the press. When he did manage to get involved he was very sloppy with his passing, putting a number of simple balls straight out of play.

James Scanlon – 6.5 – Was good on the counter and pressed well to force turnovers but just lacked the final ball into the box on the day.

Ethan Williams – 7.5 – Provided a quality delivery for Biancheri’s goal and threatened throughout with his crosses into the box. Came very close to winning the match when he forced his way through into the box and hit the post.

Gabriele Biancheri – 8 – An old-school fox in the box, his movement around the penalty area was top-tier. Took his goal well but will be disappointed not to have had more, coming close on at least two more occasions. His relentless pressing and hard work were central to United’s improvement throughout the match and ability to pin Tottenham back. Despite his short stature, his hold-up play was also very effective. Could make a push for the first team if he continues this form.

Substitutes

Jacob Devaney – 6.5 – Came in and helped solidify the midfield. Had a chance late on but put it way over the bar.

James Nolan – 6.5 – Added some fresh legs in midfield which helped United push up the field late on.

Malachi Sharpe – N/A – Only in for the last few minutes but his pace caused some troubles and created a chance for Devaney late on

Manchester United u21s took on Premier League 2 table toppers Tottenham Hotspur at Lamex Stadium as they looked to stay within the play-off positions.

It got off to a shaky start for United when the ball was lost at the back for Will Lankshear to run through but a fantastic recovery tackle from Jack Kingdon saved United’s blushes.

But it was all Tottenham in the opening stages and after Sonny Aljofree made a good block the home side eventually took the lead in the 16th minute as United couldn’t stop the relentless attacks.

The cross from the left side was missed by everyone going to Jude Soonsup-Bell on the right to deliver it back into Lankshear to finish from close range.

Tottenham’s lead lasted barely a minute though as Ruben Curley picked up the loose ball in midfield before striding forward and striking wonderfully from 25 yards into the bottom corner to draw it back level at 1-1.

United then took the lead against the run of play in the 25th minute with a dangerous low cross from Ethan Williams tapped in by Gabriele Biancheri who expertly dropped off at the back post.

But again the lead didn’t last long as Tottenham levelled in the 35th minute. After Jamie Donley threatened with a strike off the post, the number 10 delicately chipped over everyone from outside the box to even the score.

The goal wasn’t without controversy though as Dermot Mee who originally rushed out to thwart the attack left a Tottenham player down on the ground in an offside position who Mee later tripped over while retreating back to his goal. Mee and manager Travis Binnion let the referees hear about it but it wasn’t changing their mind.

Despite Tottenham having control of the first half, United did look dangerous on the counterattack and almost retook the lead just before the break after James Scanlon won the ball and squared to Biancheri who couldn’t lift his effort over the keeper, leaving it 2-2 going into half time.

United improved in the second half as they were able to get out of their half and pin Tottenham back with a high press, led by the relentless running of Biancheri, but the Reds couldn’t capitalise on the forced turnovers.

Ethan Williams came within inches when his shot was initially blocked but he collected the ball and forced his way into the box before hammering a low shot that was saved onto the post and cleared.

The home side were still a danger themselves though as they called Mee into question minutes later with a big save.

Ultimately the sides exchanged a few more blows but neither could make the breakthrough leaving it deadlocked at the final whistle. United moved up one spot into 14th place as a result.

United: Mee, Kamason, Kingdon, Aljofree, Murray, McAllister (Devaney 62), Curley, Scanlon, Oyedele (Sharpe 89), Williams, Biancheri (Nolan 75)

Unused subs: Plumley, Baumann

Manchester United u18s travelled to Wolverhampton today for a rare midweek lunch time kick-off in a fixture that could seal the Premier League North title for United with a win.

United started strongly, hitting the back of the net within three minutes, but it was quickly chalked off.

James Scanlon had broken free down the right wing and forced a big save from the Wolves’ keeper before Gabriele Biancheri pulled back the rebound for Ethan Williams to score. But the ball had already gone out before Biancheri could get to it.

It didn’t take long for United to get on the scoresheet properly though, as they stuck it past Lewys Benjamin again in the 11th minute.

Scanlon curled the through ball into the right channel perfectly for Zach Baumann to run on to and square to Biancheri to apply the finish.

The home side weren’t there to allow United to walk to the title as they equalised in the 20th minute. Min-kyu Ji crossed low from the left side to Connor McLeod to smash it past Elyh Harrison at the back post.

Immediately upon the restart, Biancheri came within inches of restoring the lead as his shot struck the left post.

It was only a matter of minutes until the Welshman would restore United’s lead, however, as he finished another fox in the box chance.

United had drawn Wolves up the pitch to press before Harrison launched the ball down the right wing to Scanlon, who ran in behind and squared to Biancheri for an easy finish.

Harrison’s next involvement wasn’t as pleasant though as he rushed out and collided with Wolves’ Lennon Patterson before Jack Kingdon importantly cleared the ball of the line.

United’s keeper remained down for several minutes before the stretcher was brough out and his right leg was secured with a splint. It was a worrying sight but fortunately it was later revealed that he had returned to his feet in the dressing room and was applying weight to his leg.

The heavy collision took some of the spark out of the match as it drifted into the the second half with neither side looking as threatening.

Biancheri came close to grabbing a hat-trick when he headed just wide from Williams’ wide free kick.

With the Premier League North title within their grasp, United maturely controlled the rest of the proceedings with no risks taken to secure the 1-2 victory.

The three points put Adam Lawrence’s United out of reach at the top of the table to win the league with two games to spare, having lost only once in the league all season. United will now move onto the national final where they will meet the winner of the Premier League South, which looks almost certain to be Chelsea.

United: Harrison (Myles 43), Kamason, Jackson, Kingdon, Nolan, McAllister, Baumann (Missin 62), Scanlon, J. Fletcher (Devaney 62), Williams (Curley 74), Biancheri (Lacey 74)
