Manchester United women’s team cruised to a comfortable 4-0 goal against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley to lift the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

The two sides met in front of a sold-out crowd in the national stadium as they both aimed to lift their first major trophy.

It was a more familiar venue for United, who reached the FA Cup final last year but unfortunately lost to Chelsea.

This time however, Marc Skinner’s side prevailed as they managed a 4-0 victory courtesy of goals from Ella Toone, Rachel Williams and a Luis Garcia double.

United started strongly with Rachel Williams who led the line, coming close with a header at the back post from a corner.

Leah Galton also had a sight of goal when she was put through on Rebecca Spencer’s goal but she couldn’t make something stick. She collided with the Spurs goalkeeper and both players had to receive some medical attention. Luckily, they carried on with proceedings and it was nothing serious.

The Red Devils were easily the dominant side as evidenced by having the lion’s share of possession and attempting the most shots, both on-target and off-target.

The opening 45 minutes were largely characterised by nerves and some poor finishing, up until seconds before the interval when Ella Toone came up with a moment of magic.

She took the ball and expertly evaded a tackle from Eveliina Summanen before firing a rocket from outside the area into the back of the net, giving Spencer no chance whatsoever of keeping it out.

It was an electric goal from Toone – her fourth in seven Wembley appearances.

United came out after the break stronger as they looked to pile further misery on Spurs. Six minutes later, Skinner made his first personnel change as he took off Galton and replaced her with Melvine Malard. Galton was in tears, sparking fears that she may have picked up an injury.

United were very strong in their set-pieces and looked dangerous every time a ball was put into the Spurs box. It was therefore unsurprising that their second goal came in this fashion. Williams rose highest to head in home a sublime cross from Katie Zelem to double the team’s lead and firmly put them in the driving seat.

A third would come just three minutes later in the 57th minute, this time through Lucia Garcia who was brilliant throughout the game. She capitalised on a howler from Spencer. The Spurs shot-stopper, in an attempt to clear, handed the ball to Garcia. The United star was all too happy to tap it in from close range.

Malard looked lively and almost created another goal for Toone, but her effort was saved by Spencer, who had a very busy afternoon.

Garcia sealed United’s victory with 15 minutes of regular time left on the clock as she whacked the ball into the back of the net. Malard crossed it in before Lisa Naalsund tapped it to the excellent Garcia, who was undoubtedly United’s most outstanding player. The fourth goal also ensured that the win was the biggest FA Cup final victory ever.

Spurs almost grabbed a goal to comfort them when Bethany England fired a shot from inside the box in the third minute of added time. Her effort was however blocked by Mannion and United eventually managed to clear it.

As the game entered its dying embers, a triumphant Skinner could be seen standing back on the touchline while soaking in the fantastic Wembley atmosphere. For all the criticism he has received due to Unted’s league run this term, he has still managed to bring the first major piece of silverware to United’s women’s team.

Manchester United Women’s team could not follow up last week’s late win against Leicester, as they came unstuck against old rivals Liverpool.

Coach Marc Skinner spoke before the match that United could not be distracted by next week’s FA Cup final when he stated, “We’ve got a showpiece final next week, but we’ve got a final this weekend, and we’ve got a final, obviously, when we play at Old Trafford against Chelsea.”

However, his side were unable to respond as Liverpool had almost the double of shots with 19 to United’s 10.

The Red Devils just shaded possession with 55% but a Jenna Clark goal in first-half stoppage time was enough to give Liverpool the win.

Not only was pride at stake but also the win saw the Anfield side jump above United into fourth place with only one league game left to play in the Women’s Super League.

United almost got off to the perfect start when they caught Liverpool napping as Leah Galton was put through one-on-one in the fourth minute of play, but could not convert as she fired the ball straight at Liverpool’s keeper, Teagan Micah.

The home side then had their first chance of the afternoon when Ceri Holland got through some industrious work down the right-hand side and played a great ball across which Taylor Hinds could only hit right at a grateful Mary Earps in the United goal.

Holland was once again in the thick of the action as she unleashed a dipping drive that dropped just above the United keeper’s crossbar as Liverpool began to take charge of proceedings.

In a back-and-forth first half, United’s Millie Turner had a great chance to open the scoring in the 15th minute when a corner dropped in the penalty box and after some pinball, Turner swivelled and shot right down Micah’s throat.

The best chance soon fell to Liverpool just before the 20th-minute mark when Emma Koivisto found herself in oceans of space but could only head against the post, leaving Earps stranded. There was a chance for her to put away the rebound, but it came at her very quickly and from a Man United perspective, luckily bounced wide of the post.

There was drama on the touchline when Liverpool’s head coach, Matt Beard, was shown a direct red card for saying something to the referee after Koivisto went down late in the first half.

Shortly after, the Red Devil’s best chance of the game fell to the usually reliable Ella Toone. The 24-year-old snatched at a half-volley chance from just inside the box after great work from Lucia Garcia down the right-hand side had set her up perfectly to finish.

United were eventually punished in the 48th minute of play when a short corner was whipped in by Marie Höbinger and Clark got the slightest of touches to deflect the ball past the stranded Earps.

Skinner had spoken of Liverpool’s threat from set pieces before the match and United were all at sea for the goal.

The second half was largely one-way traffic as the Red Devils failed to really create any major chances to threaten the Merseysiders’ lead.

Earps made a smart save from yet another long-range effort and in the 62nd minute, Liverpool striker Mia Enderby went on a great run and after beating a couple of players, fired a long-range effort that just dipped over the bar and beat the goalkeeper’s outstretched glove.

The Old Trafford side left it late but they did have a couple of chances to find an equaliser. In the 87th minute, Katie Zelem fired in a long ball that substitute Rachel Williams got her head to but could not find the required control to threaten the Liverpool goal.

The home team did have one more chance as a mix-up in the United defence led Turner to clear the ball against the Liverpool attacker who could only fire into the side netting.

However, the Merseysiders almost paid for their wastefulness when Zelem fired a late free kick into the box, that was headed across goal and substitute Melvine Malard was almost the heroine as she produced a great header that was clawed away by the inspired Micah.

The game ended and Liverpool now find themselves three points ahead of United with only one game left in the Women’s Super League, as it looks like the Red Devils will have to content themselves with a disappointing fifth-place finish.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils can now look forward to a crucial game next weekend at Wembley when they take on Tottenham Hotspur, aiming to win the club’s first piece of silverware in the women’s game.

Manchester United Women manager Marc Skinner has expressed his joy and delight at Ella Toone’s fantastic winner for the club against Leicester City on Sunday.

United managed to beat Leicester 1-0 at the King Power Stadium and the goal was a thing of beauty.

Substitute Toone produced a moment of magic in the 83rd minute of proceedings when she picked up the ball from distance and unleashed a thunderbolt into the top-right corner of Janina Leitzig’s net.

United dominated the match but were thwarted by some heroics from the Foxes shot-stopper, who was in fine form between the sticks. It seemed like the game needed something special to be unlocked and Toone provided just that.

Skinner spoke to club media after the final whistle and gave his verdict on the match, including Toone’s screamer.

The United manager said, “It was a pretty dominant performance. We should have been more ruthless in the final third while attacking. We defended well at times. Yeah, it was a professional performance but we created too many chances to still be 0-0 at that stage.”

“And obviously a goal worthy of winning any game when Toone came on. It was a magnificent strike. I’m happy for her because she’s been practising those distances for a while and to get that to come off and win the game is just fitting for what she’s been practising, so overall three points and that’s what’s most important.”

When asked about his substitutes and the impact they made against Leicester, Skinner replied, “It’s huge for any team [subs to come on and make a difference] No game is 11 players any more.”

“It has to be a whole squad and today we selected certain players for certain aspects and we brought other players in for the same reason.”

“I think what we got from that was a good performance. I was really pleased with it, especially in the first half we dominated the possession but we created moments where we’ve got to make the keeper work more.”

He added, “Knowing that you have the quality [from the bench] coming into the game is really important, but yeah from our perspective it’s just continuing. We’ve got three finals left. Not one is any more important than the other.”

Skinner finished off by praising the fans who made their way to the King Power Stadium and were relentless in their support for the team.

United return to action next Sunday when they travel to Merseyside to face Liverpool, who are just behind them in the WSL standings.

Ella Toone came on from the bench and produced a moment of magic as Manchester United eventually beat Leicester City in a crucial Women’s Super League encounter.

United were in control for large spells of the game but were thwarted by Leicester City goalkeeper Janina Leitzig, who came up with some fine saves.

Leitzig kept United at bay as she denied the likes of Geyse, Melvine Malard and Leah Galton from finding the back of the net.

Leicester’s chances were few and far between each other and they only managed four shots on target. Mary Earps in the United goal had an answer for most of the questions asked of her.

The Foxes’ best opportunity to take the lead came when Jutta Rantala cut inside and released a shot but luckily for United, she couldn’t hit the target. Rantala and her teammate, Yuka Momiki were the main sources of threat for Leicester and caused the Red Devils’ backline a few fair problems.

Momiki also hit the post in the second half.

It seemed like the game was destined to end in a stalemate until Marc Skinner made some inspired personnel changes. He brought on Nikita Parris, Lucia Garcia and Toone.

Toone came up with the goods for her team and manager when she broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute of proceedings.

The United n.o 7 had been on the pitch for just 10 minutes, but that’s all she needed to make an impact. She unleashed a thunderbolt from 25 yards which flew past Leitzig. Frankly, the Leicester shot-stopper had no chance of saving it and despite her best efforts, could only watch as the ball found the top-right corner.

The strike was Toone’s ninth goal contribution in the WSL this term.

The result has left Skinner’s side in fourth position in the WSL rankings and three points ahead of Liverpool in fifth. The Merseyside outfit, who have a game in hand, face Chelsea next Wednesday.

United’s win at the King Power Stadium was significant considering they had emerged victorious in just one of their last three WSL games.

The next assignment for the Red Devils is an away trip to take on Liverpool as they aim to put some distance between themselves and their rivals.

Manchester United Women ended their long-running misery of never winning against Chelsea with a 2-1 win that sends them to Wembley for the FA Cup final against Tottenham.

United got off to a flying start as Lucia Garcia headed in Galton’s cross to the back post in the first minute. The crowd went wild.

As the game settled, Chelsea controlled possession but United looked threatening when they won the ball back.

United defended resolutely. James had a shot that went wide, much to the relief of the home fans.

At the other end, United fought hard for every ball and Toone delivered a lovely ball into the box, Garcia and Williams were waiting and it was the latter who headed it in at the near post.

United had to be patient off the ball as Chelsea launched wave after wave of attacks. With five minutes of injury time to play Chelsea’s pressure paid off. A shot came in that Earps magnificently saved.

However, although United had kept her quiet, Lauren James found a way back in for the blues, netting just before the break.

Chelsea were relentless in the second half and United were hanging on for dear life.

Earps made two fantastic saves to maintain United’s lead in the first ten minutes of the second half.

The game was getting edgy as Chelsea tried to play for free kicks and penalties, meanwhile United were putting their bodies on the line with every wave of attack.

United netted a third but it was ruled out for offside.

Corner after corner came in, free kick after free kick but there was always a Millie Turner to head away, and Hayley Ladd to boot it up field.

Every single player was defending like their lives depended on it. Earps got booked for time-wasting. There were eight minutes of injury time but somehow United held on. As the ball went wide following a corner, there was one last big kick from Earps and the ref put her whistle to her mouth.

The north stand erupted, the curse had been broken and United had beaten Chelsea for the first time in their history to book their place at Wembley. Happy tears flowed from fans and players alike.

Team: Earps, Mannion, Le Tissier, Turner, Blundell, Naalsund, Toone (Ladd), Garcia, Galton (Parris), Williams (Malard)

Manchester United women came back from a goal down to thrash Everton 4-1 in the WSL at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

The opening ten minutes saw action at both ends. Inside two minutes, some lovely build-up play presented an opportunity for the home side but the final pass was a little too far in front of Nikita Parris.

Moments later and Parris got her first sniff at goal but her shot went just wide.

At the other end, Everton got their first real chance on goal but it also went just wide of the target.

It was a fast-paced game and captain Katie Zelem got in on the act next. The skillful Geyse found the run of Lisa Naalsund who cut it back to Zelem, who was waiting on the edge of the area but her shot was rising all the time.

Ten minutes in and it was the visitors who broke the deadlock. A short back pass from Maya Le Tissier was pounced upon by Katja Snoeijs who easily rounded Mary Earps to put the visitors ahead.

United kept making sloppy mistakes at the back but luckily Everton couldn’t capitalise further. Upfront, United seemed too scared to take the shot on even when the opportunity presented itself.

Ella Toone delivered a lovely corner which found the head of Millie Turner but her effort was just wide. It was probably United’s best chance of the half.

Heading into the break a goal behind, Marc Skinner managed to fire up his side with his half-time team talk as they came out looking like a whole new team!

United peppered the Everton goal when action resumed with the first chance falling Naalsund’s way but it was tipped over the bar by Courtney Brosnan.

Geyse soon won a corner and finally, United managed to get back to level terms. Zelem’s delivery once again found Turner who scored the equaliser for United.

The next ten minutes were madness. United came again and although the box was congested, Toone managed to find a way through to put United in the lead just three minutes after the equaliser.

Five minutes later and it was Naalsund who burst into the box, drawing Brosnan out. She cut it back to Toone who gratefully pocketed another goal with the whole net gaping.

Everton looked defeated and United weren’t finished. Leah Galton and Hinata Miyazawa came on as they returned from injury and Galton got herself on the score sheet in the last minute of the 90. It was quite the comeback as United climbed to fourth in the table.

Team: Earps, Le Tissier, Mannion, Blundell, Turner, Toone, Zelem, Naalsund, Garcia (Miyazawa), Parris (Williams), Geyse (Galton)

Manchester United Women have lost 3-1 to Manchester City in the Women’s Super League.

There were chances for both sides in the opening ten minutes.

An early corner for United was delivered well by Katie Zelem but Le Tissier’s header was off target and City eventually cleared their lines.

Lucia Garcia found herself a little too eager to launch an attack and was flagged offside moments later.

Parris too had an opportunity that Khiara Keating had to save before Geyse tested City’s resolute backline.

City had a long range shot that forced Earps into a fantastic diving save as the first half hour turned into a battle of the shot-stoppers.

However, after 37 minutes, United gave City far too much space and Jess Park opened the scoring.

Moments later, with United’s defence undone, Shaw thought she’d made it two, but was flagged offside.

A minute before half time Park was quickest to react following a corner and volleyed past Earps.

United needed a big second half but all they got was further misery as seconds into the restart Shaw made it three to the hosts.

A big blow for United came in the form of an injury to Jayde Riviere, who slipped and fell awkwardly as she changed direction.

City looked as though they were settling for the three and looked in control but United never let their heads drop and managed to bag a consolation goal.

Hannah Blundell whipped in a cross that deflected behind Khiara Keating, who had otherwise had a good afternoon.

The result means United could find themselves in fifth at the end of the weekend depending on Liverpool’s result tomorrow.

Manchester United Women have beaten Bristol City 2-0 in the league.

Naalsund opened the scoring in the tenth minute as she danced through the Bristol defence and passed it into the bottom corner in almost slow motion.

The goal woke Bristol up and they managed to get beyond the halfway line and launch an attack of their own. It went out for a corner but United’s defence dealt with it well.

United dominated possession in the first half but there was little intensity.

It was an unchanged team from the one that thumped Brighton 4-0 last weekend but they looked completely different.

In the second half, there was a scare for United as Bristol charged forward. It was squared to Hayles at the back post who rattled the woodwork.

A series of Bristol corners were dealt with well, Toone got the second away from danger and unleashed Le Tissier.

As she neared goal she panicked and instead of shooting, backheeled to Toone who was not quite on the same wavelength and the attack fizzled out.

Moments later, Garcia got a shot off and it was just millimetres wide of the top corner.

Geyse was looking a little jet-lagged but was still too much for Bristol to handle and was clattered by Napier who was already on a yellow. She was given her marching orders.

A free kick to United saw the Bristol keeper sit down ‘injured’ as the outfield players ran to the bench, angering the United fans and inspiring a debate about tactical injuries.

With eight minutes of injury time to play, there was time for late drama luckily it went in United’s favour as Naalsund hooked it in the near post following a corner delivered by Katie Zelem.

United had made hard work of it but they got the job done in the end.

Team: Earps, Le Tissier, Blundell, Toone, Malard (Geyse), Zelem, Riviere, Naalsund, Garcia, Turner, Parris (Williams)

Manchester United Women have drawn 1-1 with West Ham United in the Women’s Super League.

It looked like United were going to run away with it as they made the breakthrough early on.

Captain Katie Zelem found Rachel Williams, who made no mistake.

Three minutes later the Hammers had an opportunity from a corner, but Earps pulled off a fantastic save to maintain United’s lead.

Halfway through the first half there was worry for United. Millie Turner was already playing through illness and now a late challenge on Maya Le Tissier led to a lengthy stoppage in play as she received treatment. Luckily she was able to continue.

Just before the break there were chances for both sides. A free kick in a dangerous area for the hosts was well dealt with by Earps and Turner.

Meanwhile, West Ham keeper Arnold was forced into a fingertip save to deny Turner in first half stoppage time.

The visitors started the second half brightly. Toone had a chance but it was an easy catch for Arnold.

Another opportunity came for United as Malard tried to square to Parris but it was cut out by the Hammers’ defence.

Parris’ header from the resulting corner was just over the bar.

Naalsund worked hard in midfield and won the ball back a few times but was too hesitant to take the shot on herself when she broke into the box.

Garcia went on a good run down the right, danced round a few defenders and got her shot away but it was just wide.

United hadn’t taken their chances, and they had had plenty. In a rare break forward West Ham found an equaliser through Asseyi, five minutes from time.

Williams missed a sitter in the final minute of injury time, as she jumped to stop Arnold’s kick. She ran after it and instead of slotting it into the empty net she slotted it wide, she couldn’t believe it, neither could the fans!

United slip even further from the Champions League places with this result and find themselves in a battle for fourth place with Liverpool.

Team: Earps, Turner (Evans), Blundell, Le Tissier, Galton, Zelem, Ladd (Naalsund), Malard (Garcia), Williams, Toone, Parris

Manchester United have lost 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates, in front of a record crowd of over 60,000 people.

United started well. Nikita Parris ran onto a short back-pass from Laia Cordina and rounded the keeper, who had rushed out. She was late with her challenge and brought Parris down but the ref waved play on.

Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 10th minute following a Katie McCabe corner which was delivered low. In the melee of bodies it looked to deflect first off Geyse then off Le Tissier into the back of the net.

United struggled to get a foothold in the game after that as the Gunners launched attack after attack.

Mead delivered a rocket strike which seemed to be curling into the top corner but Turner managed to leap high enough to head it behind.

Chances were few and far between for United but they mainly came from Garcia.

She darted into the area but the attack fizzled out as she failed to control the ball. Moments later and she managed to pick out Ella Toone, but her shot deflected wide.

Ten minutes from half-time, in a desperate bid to clear the ball from the feet of Blackstenius, Zelem hit it straight towards Lacasse who headed it in at the far post.

The game was all but over by the time the break came, as Evans, who was living dangerously on a yellow card anyway, brought down Mead in the penalty area.

Kim Little calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending Earps the wrong way.

In the second half Manchester United managed to keep the hosts fairly quiet but lacked belief going forward.

Earps had a strong half between the sticks making a couple of fine saves, one on one.

There were chances for Geyse, whose strike was just wide and Parris, who managed to get her head on the end of a cross from Garcia, but it flew over the bar.

Beth Mead rattled the woodwork twice but in the closing stages of the game it was United who showed promise.

As Arsenal took their foot off the gas, Katie Zelem took a short corner to Toone who delivered it to the unmarked Garcia at the back post for a tap in.

However, it was six minutes into injury time and the visitors had left it too late to claw their way back into the game.

It leaves United seven points outside of the top three and with a mountain to climb to make the Champions League places.

Team: Earps; Le Tissier, Turner, Blundell, Evans (Galton, 45); Naalsund (Ladd 70), Zelem; Toone, Geyse (Williams, 62), Garcia; Parris (Malard, 78)
