The beautiful game has always been and will always be unpredictable. From matches to seasons to football careers, nothing is a sure thing. It is a cruel truth of the game and its charm.

Nobody will acknowledge this more than Manchester United’s once-revered defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson. The Red Devils academy graduate’s fall from grace must be a bitter pill to swallow.

Goodbye Brewers

The 26-year-old’s former club Burton Albion has released him, leaving him unattached after two years with the club (via Daily Star).

Over the two years, the former United starlet featured 72 times. However, uncertainty sits firmly on the horizon for Borthwick-Jackson despite helping the team move from 16th to 15th place in League One. It is a marginal improvement but an improvement nonetheless.

Life before leaving the Theatre of Dreams

Borthwick-Jackson donned the red of United at just six years old. He rose through the ranks diligently until Louis van Gaal gifted him his first-team debut.

The youngster came to Van Gaal’s rescue in November 2015 amid an injury-stricken season. At the time, Marouane Fellaini was injured, and Marcus Rojo was running on fumes, having played one too many back-to-back games.

The desperate need to bolster the backline spelled opportunity for young Borthwick-Jackson, who repaid Van Gaal’s faith with a solid performance. Following Borthwick-Jackson’s debut, the Dutch manager said:

“I have seen him once or twice, and I have been impressed by him. I put Cameron in the line-up without any fear, and I have to say he did very well.”

The starlet went on to muster just 14 appearances for the club, which all occurred in his debut season.

Afterward, the former United back would be loaned out to Wolves, Leeds, Scunthorpe, Tranmere, and Oldham. Borthwick-Jackson eventually left the Theatre of Dreams in 2020.

Before his latest stint with the Brewers, the defender would enjoy a loan spell and free transfer to Oldham.

The unfortunate turn of events means the 26-year-old has gone from being more highly rated than stars Marcus Rashford and Ousmane Dembele to being on the hunt for a new club in the summer.

Loan starlet makes case for displacing Ten Hag protégé from starting line-up - opinion https://thepeoplesperson.com/2023/05/19/manchester-uniteds-on-loan-alvaro-fernandez-makes-case-for-first-team-consideration-264153/ Fri, 19 May 2023 03:00:28 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=264153 Sending players out on loan for their development is part and parcel…

The post Manchester United’s on-loan Alvaro Fernandez makes case for first-team consideration appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

Sending players out on loan for their development is part and parcel of today’s game but so is squad depth.

With countless competitions overlapping throughout the season, one cannot discount the importance of a fresh pair of legs or gifted replacements.

Therefore while having options can be a manager’s weekly headache, it’s also an excellent problem to have.

When asked about Amad Diallo, the Manchester United player on loan to Sunderland, Erik ten Hag responded from his seat inside the Carrington media suite, saying:

“Of course, we loan such players to make development and make progress to bring them back; that is the aim of the loan.”

“So we are really strong with them, we mentor them, we follow them, we have communication over the season, especially Darren Fletcher (technical director) invests a lot in such processes, the aim is to bring them back but as a better player with experience.”

Another rising star in United’s galaxy

While Diallo has taken the Championship by storm, another on-loan Red Devil has impressed for Preston North End.

United loanee Alvaro Fernandez has helped carry his adopted team to a decent 12th place in the league (via Manchester Evening News).

Sending players who might not make the first team regularly is a tactic that benefits both the player and the club.

The player gets precious game time and match experience. On the other hand, the club welcomes back a player who has grown and can offer an alternative to the usual roster.

20-year-old Fernandez has taken the proverbial bull by the horns and made the most of his time at Deepdale. In 42 appearances across all competitions, the youngster has managed to provide six assists.

Ryan Lowe deployed the young Spaniard as a left-back, left-sided wing-back, or left-midfield. It is also a testament to Fernandez’s versatility. He is the quintessential modern full-back, sturdy at the back but also a threat going forward.

Blessing and a curse

This season, Luke Shaw has monopolized the left-back position for the Red Devils.

Shaw’s understudy Tyrell Malacia has had to settle for playing second fiddle. Malacia has proven his worth but ultimately he still remains short of the level required to be the starting full-back for a club like United.

That is not a criticism of Malacia. After all, not only is this his first season with United after leaving Feyenoord, but it is also his first year adjusting to life abroad. ]

At 23, Malacia is only three years Fernandez’s senior. If the pair stays injury-free, they will still have many years of football and potential to fulfill.

Presently, Malacia and Fernandez have yet to develop enough to displace Shaw.

However, they are each becoming legitimate replacements that can be called upon during injury or strategic reshuffles.

As alluded to earlier, the challenge now rests with boss Ten Hag to decide what to do with his Spanish loanee next.

Whatever he decides will have consequences for the career trajectory of the young player, his temperament, and the club’s fortunes next season.

Every player wants to see their name on the team sheet, but only some players will get the opportunity. Another stint away from Old Trafford for a more competitive team may catalyze a change in Fernandez’s position at United.

Ryan Giggs is a member of the celebrated class of ’92 and Manchester United royalty. It’s only natural that his 16-year-old son Zach would be the heir to his United legacy.

However, Zach Giggs has chosen to chart his own path and write his story.

After four years in the Red Devils youth academy, Zach has opted to sign a youth contract with recently promoted Sheffield United.

It Is a bittersweet moment.

The Giggs legacy

Ryan Giggs spent two decades with the Red Devils – a rare display of loyalty and unwavering club dedication in today’s game. He amassed a jaw-dropping 963 appearances for United over 24 years.

Along the way, he helped United fill the trophy cabinet with 34 trophies.

The trophies included 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, four FA Cup titles, nine FA Community Shields, three Football League Cups, and one UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Intercontinental Cup.

It is an astonishing trophy haul that makes him the most decorated player from the English Premier League in history.

Giggs senior hung up his boots in 2014 after United’s 3-1 win over Hull City at Old Trafford.

Old Trafford would have loved to see the Giggs junior chase his old man’s records and achievements in the red of United.

For now, Ryan Giggs fans must make do with seeing the talented teenager in Sheffield United’s colours.

A done deal

Zach signed on the dotted line for the Blades on Tuesday after impressing during trials. His switch from Old Trafford to Bramall Lane came after his new club secured Premier League football earlier this month. Sheffield United finished second in the Championship.

Like his dad, Zach has pedigree and talent, having already played for Wales at youth level. Last September, the youngster debuted for the Wales’ under-17s in a clash against France.

Zach put pen to paper with ‘The Academy of Opportunity’ written on a wall behind him as the backdrop. The wall was plastered with pictures of Three Lions players Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker, and Phil Jagielka. Each of the England Internationals made their way through the Blades youth system before going on to flourishing careers.

A talented prospect, Zach Giggs is sure to light up football’s stage, albeit for another club. The footballing world will undoubtedly be watching.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has plenty to be happy with this season. Earlier this campaign, the Dutchman steered his side to their first piece of silverware in six years.

The Red Devils swept Newcastle’s Magpies aside in a 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

With just three games left to play, United are in the running for a coveted top-four finish. Ending the season in a top-four spot will guarantee Champions League football next season. The competition featuring Europe’s elite football clubs has been sorely missed by the Old Trafford faithful.

Recently, the United gaffer acquired yet another feather in his cap – the title of the World’s Sexiest Manager.
The furrow-browed, neatly bearded, suit-wearing Dutchman will undoubtedly be ecstatic to hear the news.

Criteria

SeatPick carried out a science-led study to establish which manager was the most attractive (via The Daily Star).

The criteria involved more than just outward appearance and physical characteristics.

Rankings were based on a manager’s height and net worth, analysing 100,000 tweets to see how many times they were called “sexy”, and finally, the geometric golden ratio percentage.

TikTok users will be familiar with the geometric golden ratio used to judge faces, as it has been a trending filter on the social media platform for some time.

Results & ranking

The data revealed that United boss Ten Hag took the first spot. His score was 7.78 out of 10. Next in line for the crown of sexiest manager was Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta with 7.35. Ten Hag bested the Arsenal manager in every category except net worth.

Joint third were Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, sharing a score of 7.07.

On 3rd June, Guardiola will be on a mission to claw one back against Erik ten Hag as their teams clash in the FA Cup Final. United will battle City for their second piece of silverware at Wembley Stadium in London.

]]>

It seems like almost a lifetime since Dean Henderson set foot on the pitch for Manchester United or laced up his training boots at Carrington. The United keeper has been on loan at Nottingham Forest but is set to return to Old Trafford in the summer.

One challenge after the other

It has not been smooth sailing for the 26-year-old. Henderson has been at the club since age 14, but appearances for his boyhood team have been few and far between.

Before his loan spell at the City Ground began, he had just three appearances for United in the previous season. Those appearances included one in the League Cup, one in the FA Cup, and one in the Champions League.

Before that, he featured just 29 times across all competitions for the Red Devils following his return from a two-year loan stint at Sheffield United. Of those 29 appearances, Henderson secured 13 clean sheets.

This term, the shot-stopper has been plagued by injury, keeping him off the field for the second half of the season.

The last occasion he took to the field came on January 14.

He suffered a torn thigh during loan club Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 win over Leicester.

Silver linings

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel following a successful surgery (via Manchester Evening News). Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the recovering goalie said:

“All good, [the operation] all went to plan.

“I had a surgery on an ongoing issue and hopefully I’ll be back on the pitch for the start of pre-season.”

Meanwhile, David de Gea’s position as United’s first-choice keeper is quickly becoming less certain.

The Red Devils No.1 goalkeeper has made numerous keeping errors, leading to the team conceding goals. Whether Erik ten Hag will look to Henderson as a replacement stands to be seen; alternatively, the manager may consider a change of personnel from further afield.

Whether Henderson stays at the Theatre of Dreams or plies his trade elsewhere will only be revealed after September 1.

What is certain is that after a prolonged time away, Henderson will be keen to get between the sticks and prove his mettle.

]]>

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoyed a glittering career as a Red Devils forward. However, as a manager, he endured a torrid time, with his tenure as United boss ending after 168 games.

The 50-year-old Norwegian left the club with a record of 91 wins, 37 draws, and 40 losses.

What went wrong

As an interim manager tasked to steer the United ship to stability, Solskjaer excelled. Sadly, the same could not be said about his fortunes as a permanent manager.

It requires little imagination to understand that the void left by Sir Alex Ferguson was colossal. It would be no mean feat to equal the accomplishments of the great Scot, let alone better them. After all, Sir Alex Ferguson is the most successful English Premier League manager to date.

For all his criticisms, Solskjaer achieved a comparatively higher win rate than most of his post-Ferguson managerial peers. He was second only to José Mourinho.

Defensively Solskjaer’s United battled.

Ultimately, he failed to bring silverware to a club desperately wanting to return to its former glory. This was also compounded by crushing defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City after an extravagant £441m spending spree in the transfer market.

Solskjaer exited the club on November 21, 2021.

One more time?

Recently, before a sold-out audience at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, Solskjaer enjoyed over an hour on stage speaking on many subjects (via The Athletic). “An Evening with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer” took place on Friday, May 12, before the 2-0 Red Devils’ victory over Wolves.

Love and admiration for the former United gaffer filled the room.

It was also clear that the United icon’s love for the club had not dampened. He does not believe his foray into management is over. Solskjaer said:

“I’ve got another job in me if it’s the right chance and exciting enough.

“There are so many clubs, but I’m not going to work just for the sake of working. It has to be something special, a new culture, or a club that really excites me. Or maybe they will want me back at the club (United) in some capacity; who knows?”

Nostalgia is a funny thing. It urges us to long for times and moments past. Often, the second time around rarely lives up to the first occasion. If the Red Devils legend does return to Old Trafford, both he and the Old Trafford faithful will be hoping for much better fortunes than his last stint.

]]>

In an exciting twist of fate, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel is pursuing a new career at 59. The real headline should be that the career in question is musical.

The 59-year-old Dane rose to legendary status during his time as keeper for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils during the 1990s.

Schmeichel accomplished many feats throughout his football playing career, including helping Denmark win the 1992 Euros against all odds.

At club level, the Great Dane won the FA Cup three times, the League Cup once, and the Premier League 5 times.

His greatest accolade came at the end of his eight-year career with United on the supreme high of winning the Treble in 1999. The Treble included the famous Red Devils Champions League victory of 1999.

Schmeichel left Old Trafford to stop shots between the sticks for Sporting Lisbon, Aston Villa, and Manchester City.

Twenty years have passed since he ended his football career.

Popular both on and off the pitch, he has appeared as a pundit for different sports broadcasters.

However, since the lockdown of 2020, Schmeichel has turned his attention in an unlikely direction. He has now chosen to swap shot-stopping for chart-topping.

Never too old to rock and roll

During the Covid pandemic, Schmeichel learned how to play the guitar (via The Sun). What’s more, he now has his own recording studio at home.

The studio boasts a piano, keyboards, guitars, and a drum kit. Recently, the goalkeeper revealed that preparations for a tour are underway.

Speaking on Proper Football! Podcast, he said:

“I had times where I’m sat there thinking, ‘Oof, I’m approaching 60, there’s so many things I really, really want to do. And one of the things was to play in a band.”

He also shared that his band is called The Ones.

“I’m playing with professional musicians who’ve had like a 30-year career here in Denmark.

“We talk as much as we play. I’ve got loads of stories to tell from my football career, and they have from their rock ’n roll career.”

Reds at war: Gary Neville bites back at Bruno Fernandes' "complete lies" claim https://thepeoplesperson.com/2023/04/17/gary-neville-accuses-bruno-fernandes-of-over-the-top-behaviour-262692/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 16:00:36 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=262692 Ex-Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has once again…

The post Gary Neville accuses Bruno Fernandes of “over the top” behaviour appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Ex-Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has once again criticised Bruno Fernandes’ actions. This time it was in response to the Portuguese player’s attempt to defend his behaviour in games past.

Fernandes bore the brunt of criticism for his petulance during United’s 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool last month. The United midfielder was seen throwing a strop with arms waved in frustration at his teammates. This was compounded by the pushing of a linesman toward the end of the game.

Fernandes comes to his own defense

Recently, Fernandes explained his actions asserting that he never disrespects his fellow players (via Mail Online). He insisted that his gestures were misunderstood and spoke out at pundits.

Fernandes told Sky Sports, “I never try to be disrespectful with anyone. 75,000 in Old Trafford, you have to make gestures with your hand.”

“We know pundits have to say things. It’s about my teammates being happy; when they are not, I want them to tell me.”
Addressing concerns raised about his antics during the 7-0 battering at Anfield, Fernandes said:

“Most of the things that were said after that game were complete lies. People said because I raised my arms, they supposed I said something that I didn’t say.

“The pundits want always to say something bad; they want to get credit and attention from the people outside.”

Neville doubles down

Neville stuck to his guns when asked about his thoughts on Fernandes’ comments. He went on to say that he was not alone in his concerns about the Portuguese’s antics.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said, “I don’t talk to any United fan that likes the way Fernandes behaves, particularly when the team are losing when he throws his arms around.

“As a football player, he’s been fantastic for United, his goals and assists. He says he doesn’t cause a problem when he throws his arms around; he does.

“I played with Roy, who would hand out the odd rollicking. The last few years there’s been players at United tutting which I think is a different type of criticism; it doesn’t help young players.”

Neville recalled harbouring similar feelings about another Portuguese player who recently exited the club.

“I called it out when Cristiano was doing it a couple of years ago; I don’t like it. Direct criticism is fine. He is passionate; he is emotional; he gets involved with the referee. I’ve got no problem with that.

“Every United man I speak to feels the same thing; sometimes he goes over the top.”

Despite drawing so much negative attention at Anfield, boss Erik ten Hag supports Fernandes. Since then, he has proved central to United’s continued resurgence.

After teammate Marcus Rashford, Fernandes is the top scorer in all competitions for United. The 28-year-old Portuguese put on a brilliant display in United’s triumph over Nottingham Forest over the weekend.

Ex-United star and England International Jesse Lingard has landed in hot water for allegedly sending false details to the police. The Nottingham Forest star reportedly shared phony details after a speed camera caught his Range Rover exceeding the limit.

The Forest midfielder is now due to stand trial in court (via The Mirror). Lingard has been charged with failure to supply information about who was driving his vehicle after a name and address were provided and ‘linked’ to a supposed NIP (Notices of Intended Prosecution) farm.

The 30-year-old enjoyed a 22-year relationship with Manchester United before leaving his childhood club in June last year. His side of the story was heard for the first time on Friday at Stockport Magistrates Court.

Court proceedings

However, Lingard was not present. His lawyer entered the not-guilty plea on his behalf. The court heard that a speed camera allegedly flashed Lingard’s Range Rover Sport exceeding the speed limit. The violation reportedly took place on the A56 in Trafford in August 2022. The driver was neither spoken to nor stopped.

Mike Arden, representing the Greater Manchester Police (GMP), stated that the force “wrote to Lingard at his then home address in Altrincham” with a notice of intended prosecution and Section 172 notice. The Section 172 notice requested that the driver be identified.

Arden also explained that the notice “made it clear that the individual it was addressed to was to respond” and that “they are not to pass it on to anyone.”

Arden confirms that roughly two weeks later that details were provided online “on the face of it by someone appearing to be Lingard” using his email address.

The nomination identified George Bolt as the driver. The nomination also said that George Bolt lived at an address on Pretoria Road in Oldham. The court was then told that the alleged Mr. Bolt was written to, but no response was received.

The plot thickens

In a quote to the Manchester Evening News, Arden said, “That’s not a surprise because he doesn’t exist. We’re quite certain about that.

The GMP prosecutor explained that the name had been “linked to a so-called NIP farm.”

Arden maintains that checks were conducted, and GMP was “satisfied George Bold doesn’t exist at that address.”

To make matters worse, Arden suggests even the address appears false saying, “We’re not even sure the address exists. We think it is a car park.”

He continued, “Therefore, the nomination of Mr. Bolt was inaccurate and misleading and prevents police getting to the bottom of who was driving the Range Rover.”

Lingard’s representative, Frank Rogers, asserted, “Mr. Lingard will say he never saw the notice of intended prosecution and never had any dealings with it.

Manchester United icon Paul Ince has been axed by Reading. The sacking follows a run of poor form that saw the club struggle through an eight-game winless run.

The losing streak includes the club’s latest 2-1 defeat at the hands of Preston North End on Easter Monday.

The forgettable Easter Monday scoreline leaves Reading in the unenviable position of 22nd in the Championship.

Ince has since exited the manager role, with Noel Hunt appointed interim manager (via The Mirror).

When it rains, it pours

55-year-old Ince’s departure comes just seven days after Reading accepted a six-point dedication for breaching financial rules.

The former United midfielder and England International’s stint at the club lasted just over a year.

His tenure at the Select Car Leasing Stadium occurred eight years after his exit from Blackpool.

The departure confirmed

Reading released a statement that read:

“Reading Football Club can confirm that the contract of first-team manager Paul Ince has been terminated with immediate effect.

“Ince was appointed initially on an interim basis with his assistant Alex Rae in February 2022 and, alongside the likes of Academy Manager Michael Gilkes and Under-18s manager Mikele Leigertwood in the dugout, he did an admirable job in helping the club stave off the threat of relegation with four wins from the final 14 fixtures last season.

“Ince took the reins permanently in the summer and, having to cope with strict transfer embargo restrictions, he helped to piece together a new squad on a much-reduced wage budget – and with five wins from our first seven home games, the season began brightly.

“However, without a win in our last eight matches and with a relegation battle to fight following a six-point deduction imposed last week, owner Mr. Dai Yongge has decided that a change is needed. Assistant Manager Alex Rae has also departed the club.”

“Our Under-21s Manager and former Royals striker, Noel Hunt, has been installed as Interim First Team Manager until the end of the season.”

“Director of Player Development, Eddie Niedzwiecki, will be his Assistant Manager accompanied by First Team Coach James Oliver-Pearce – a management team who will take to the home dugout for the first time when we host league leaders Burnley at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday.”
