Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly been approached to become the new manager of Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The Portuguese has been out of work since being sacked by Roma in January.

The Istanbul club are second in the league and have accumulated an impressive 93 points from 36 games, only losing one league match all season.

However, unluckily for them, arch-rivals Galatasaray have just been that little better and sit six points clear with two games remaining in the season.

Mourinho has been linked to numerous jobs in the last few months and there was even a shock report last week that he would love to have the opportunity to return to Old Trafford for a second bite at the cherry.

In addition, he has also been linked to the Bayern Munich job and even the Canadian national team, as has another former United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The “special one” has also been linked to a host of jobs in Saudi Arabia but he has so far failed to agree any moves.

Now reports in Turkey (via The Sun) suggest that Mourinho could be on his way to Istanbul.

Former Fenerbahce president, Aziz Yıldırım, has boldly claimed that if he were to be voted as president of the club, he already has an agreement with Mourinho to become coach of the Sarı Kanaryalar.

He posted on X yesterday, “we agreed with Jose Mourinho. If we are elected president, he will come to Turkey.”

Should this deal come to pass it would be a massive one for Turkish football and the name of Mourinho would probably attract numerous players to try their luck in Istanbul.

As one of the most dominant and richest teams in the land, who have also qualified for the Champions League, Fenerbahce are likely to be a tempting role for the Portuguese to get his teeth into.

One player Mourinho would know well should he join the side is former United man Fred. The Brazilian has enjoyed a successful first season in Turkey, playing 33 games in all competitions, scoring three goals and creating eight more for his teammates in all competitions.

In addition, never a manager to shy away from confrontation, it is possible Mourinho would thrive in the hostile, passionate cauldron of Turkish football and relish the chance to end a league trophy drought for the Turkish club that has now lasted a decade.

David Beckham believes Manchester United’s struggles in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era have gone on for “too long” and wants things to change at Old Trafford “pretty quickly”.

Speaking on Talk of the Devils podcast, the former winger was empathetic to the situation his boyhood club found themselves in the wake of Ferguson’s retirement.

“I think it has been a difficult time over the last five or ten years, but it was always going to be when the boss left the club,” Beckham contends.

The 49 year old believes it was not simply that United lost their legendary manager, however.

He also references the departures of integral players like Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville as huge losses to the club’s identity.

“It wasn’t just that, we lost players like Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Gary Neville, all of these players that had been at United for so long; you lose part of that and you lose part of the club. So it was always going to be a difficult time. But we’d like it to change pretty quickly because I think it’s gone on for too long now.”

The erosion of standards in the United dressing has been one of the most stark contrasts to the Ferguson era and Beckham clearly feels this was engendered by the loss of the leaders he came through the ranks with at Old Trafford.

One is left pondering just how a moody forward like Marcus Rashford would act if he was forced to share a dressing room with a captain like Roy Keane; or a winger like Antony would conduct himself if he had a fullback such as Gary Neville overlapping him.

One of Ferguson’s biggest strengths, amid a sea of them, was his ability to identify players with the correct attitudes – ruthless winners whose sole focus was Manchester United, not a new clothing deal or the latest Tik Tok trend.

Far too often in the last decade has Old Trafford been a beacon for players who are attracted by the wage packet on offer, rather than the red shirt. Or lucky enough to find themselves at home at a club their talent level does not match, and simply do not want to leave, despite languishing on the bench for the majority of their prime.

This type of mentality, or lack thereof, is a pernicious one; the sort which infects a dressing room and makes good players bad and bad players terrible.

Beckham is spot on in his assessment that it was not simply the loss of Ferguson which threw United into disrepair, but equally the loss of Ferguson’s lieutenants who helped distil the great Scot’s philosophy throughout his dressing room.

The post Ruud van Nistelrooy approaches former Manchester United CEO to land next managerial job appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

In recent years Eredivisie has emerged as a hotspot for European giants to find their next tactical mastermind.

Manchester United roped in Erik ten Hag after seeing his exploits at Ajax, while Liverpool are now replacing Jurgen Klopp with Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Last season, Ruud van Nistelrooy also made headlines by turning PSV Eindhoven into a winning machine.

The former Man United striker earned plenty of plaudits for implementing an attacking brand of football and leading PSV to a Dutch Cup triumph.

This season, PSV have ended their six-year wait for a league title, and many credit Nistelrooy for laying the foundation for the side’s success.

Still, the Dutchman was not able to finish what he started reportedly due to issues behind the scenes. He departed abruptly, without managing PSV’s last game of the season.

The 47-year-old is now interested in returning to the touchline, but as per The Mirror, he will only be “tempted by the right opportunity.”

In order to ensure the same, he has knocked on the doors of United’s former chief executive Peter Kenyon, who exited Old Trafford to oversee Chelsea’s project in 2003.

Van Nistelrooy revealed: “I know Peter Kenyon from my playing days at United. He is now 70 and an independent consultant. This man has a wealth of experience, a network, a frame of reference.”

“I have asked if he would review the organisation of (interested) clubs for me. It is super important to get as complete a picture as possible. I’m really looking for the right step.”

Nistelrooy is not the only ex-United striker who has been picky when it comes to accepting a new managerial offer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who parted ways with the Red Devils in 2021, remains without a club despite being heavily linked with a number of jobs.

Most recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Solskjaer was on the radar of Canada. The Republic of Ireland national team also approached him in January but he did not feel the opportunity was “right for him.”

]]>

Former Manchester United player and Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville, believes that it is inevitable that his former side will win league titles again.

The Red Devils are on course for their worst ever Premier League finish of eighth position, with three tough-looking fixtures still left to play, starting this weekend against league leaders Arsenal.

United still need five points from their remaining matches to beat their worst ever points total set in the 2021/2022 season of 58 points and were they to concede just three more goals, this would officially be the leakiest United team in Premier League history.

The Red Devils also sit a massive 29 points off the top of the Premier League and 13 points off a Champions League spot.

Therefore, it is a little surprising that Gary Neville has claimed to PA news agency (via The Independent) that “as sure as the sun will rise, Manchester United will start to win again, it’s a fact.”

“When that is, I don’t know. It can be no guarantee, but I know that these things go in cycles.”

Neville, who grew up a United fan, claimed that he can draw on his experience as a fan in the 1980s.

The Red Devils famously went from 1967 until 1993 without winning a league title until a certain Sir Alex Ferguson changed the course of history in English football.

Speaking on his childhood experience he said, “I lived my whole childhood watching Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal win trophies, win the old Division One, and was patient.”

“I had to wait until I was 18, 19 when Manchester United first won a league title in my life – and then we won a load of league titles, and now we’ve not won one for 10 years.”

The former captain justified his response by claiming that it is inevitable that large clubs like United will eventually get it right, and this was the reason behind his bullish remarks.

“I know full well that in my lifetime – hopefully – Manchester United will win trophies, but they will win trophies again. We will get it right, just as Liverpool will, just as Arsenal will.”

“You can’t keep these great clubs down. I’m sorry, they’re too big, they’re too established, they’ve got a great history, they go through lean periods.”

Obviously all fans of the Mancunian club hope Neville is correct but in the ultra-competitive league where Aston Villa will likely play Champions League football next season and United stand a very good chance of having no European involvement, there are many obstacles to the Red Devils returning to the top of the tree.

New financial regulations like PSR and the newly voted in anchoring spending cap, means that it will be harder for United and other traditionally big clubs to solve their problems by throwing money at them.

Moreover, the league is full of great players and managers and United will certainly not always be their destination of choice, especially if the side continues to flounder as it has done.

However, it is not all bad news. The name Manchester United will always resonate proudly in the world of football and with new owners INEOS showing ruthless ambition to elevate the club’s current standings, fans can be more positive than previous years, as they at least try to make the team great again, which had not seemed a priority for the Glazers.

Legendary striking duo, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole have bemoaned how far Manchester United have fallen from the standards that their great side of the late 1990s and early 2000s set.

Both players played a pivotal role in the club’s success in that era and none more so than in the majestic 1998-1999 season, where they scored a combined 53 goals in all competitions as the Red Devils became the first English side to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Speaking at the premiere of the new Amazon documentary on the 1999 Treble, the two strikers criticised the current standing of the club.

Speaking on the red carpet Cole claimed, “I have never seen Manchester United being in this position, I’ve got to be brutally honest. The team I was involved in left a legacy for players who want to come to the club and try to emulate us. I look at the team now and teams previously, and you scratch your head, because you’ve got to understand what Manchester United is all about. It’s about winning, competing, pushing for major honours.”

“We’re so far away. We keep saying: ‘Oh another couple of years,’ but it’s been longer. When are Man United going to be involved in the title race?”

Yorke added to the concern by stating, “it’s so far apart [from our team], it’s not even close. What is more painful is we can’t even qualify for the Champions League. That’s the minimum. You can accept you aren’t close to winning the league but when you aren’t even qualifying for the Champions League, that’s a whole new [low] level.”

Both players then commented on how this weekend’s opponent, Arsenal, used to be mocked for celebrating Champions League qualification like winning a trophy but that this current United side are even very far away from achieving this.

The Englishman said, “Arsenal used to finish fourth and celebrate like they’d won the league and we used to laugh at them. That’s where we are.”

Yorke added, “it’s crazy how the mindset has changed now and to hear me even get into that sort of conversation [fourth place] and we aren’t even qualifying for that.”

It is difficult viewing to see the trajectories of the two clubs and before tomorrow’s crunch tie between the two at Old Trafford, there is a chasm of 29 points between the two teams with the Gunners top of the tree and the Red Devils in a lowly eighth.

Arsenal also boast an impressive goal difference of 60 while United have a pathetic minus three after 35 matches.

Adding to the challenge that INEOS have to bring the club back to the top table of English football, Yorke claimed that he would no longer sign for the club if he was a player now.

The Trinidad and Tobago international made the switch from Aston Villa in 1998 but he would sign for a different team now he claims.

“If you’ve got the likes of Liverpool and Man City after you then United is in the second tier,” he said. “[Now] I wouldn’t want to play [for United] – it’s whether you want to face that sort of aggravation coming in.”

United will hope to at least finish the season on a positive note with three crucial league fixtures coming up, as they can still qualify for the Europa League in sixth place. Naturally, fans and players alike will be dreaming of overturning the odds heavily stacked against them and beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final in two weeks.

Manchester United legend David Beckham has warned that any United players who aren’t motivated for the FA Cup final are in the wrong team and playing the wrong sport.

The former midfielder enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Old Trafford, winning six Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and one Champions League at the club.

A United academy prospect, Beckham was the epitome of high standards, talent and work ethic back in the 90s and 2000s.

Sadly the 2024 version of United, whilst having the talent, severely lacks the work ethic and discipline required to grind out results under difficult circumstances.

This has resulted in Erik ten Hag’s side slipping to eighth in the table and losing a club record 13 matches in a single Premier League season.

There was a worrying report relayed by The Peoples Person that United’s players have “given up” and fear they will fail to win any of their remaining three crucial league games in addition to the FA Cup final against cross-city rivals, Manchester City.

Pundits have also laid into certain stars’ efforts with Marcus Rashford and Casemiro often being two of the most singled-out players for their poor displays.

Both players were vital as United ended their trophy drought last season but this term, they have been a shadow of their former selves.

Speaking at the premiere of the new 1999 Treble documentary, Beckham stated that he hoped the United manager wouldn’t have to do very much to motivate the players to seek revenge for last season’s final defeat to the same opponents.

“I think that’s the whole point of being a Manchester United player and playing in these big games you should be motivated. When you’re a professional footballer and you’re doing the job you love and you’re at the club you love, when you’re playing in any game, whether it’s a regular season game or whether it’s an FA Cup final against your rivals, that should be enough motivation.”

Drawing on his own experience as a seasoned winner at the club he stated, “And, if it’s not, then you’re in the wrong team and you’re playing the wrong sport.

“We went into every game, whether it was a youth cup game, a friendly game, off-season or a European Cup final, with the same mentality and the same drive and that’s what you’d hope that any team and any player for Manchester United go into an FA Cup final against Manchester City with enough motivation that the manager shouldn’t have to say much.”

It speaks volumes about the sad state of affairs at the club that fans have to genuinely worry about whether or not their players will be up for an FA Cup final but it is a very real concern.

In reality, there is still much to play for in the Premier League. Yes, Champions League football is out of reach but Europa League qualification is still very much within reach with three mouth-watering ties versus Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton still to play before attention can even switch to the FA Cup final.

Moreover, playing for the biggest club in England, if not the world, should be enough motivation for any player. If it is not, it is scary to think how much club standards have fallen under the incompetent Glazers.

One of the most vital aspects new owners INEOS are looking to change is the poor culture that has festered in the club for far too long and winning an FA Cup against their neighbours would be a strong way to enter what promises to be one of the most dramatic windows in the club’s recent history.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has seemingly landed a new role, months after he was slapped with a four-year ban from professional football.

Pogba failed a drug test following Juventus’ first game of the season against Udinese. He didn’t start on that occasion but was selected for random testing.

He has repeatedly stated that he is innocent and never knowingly or deliberately took substances intended to give him a sporting advantage.

Pogba also denied that he intentionally violated anti-doping rules after testing positive for abnormal levels of testosterone. He vowed to appeal the four-year ban before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Should the ban hold, the Carrington academy graduate will be out of the game until 2027, meaning his career could potentially be over as he’d be into his mid-thirties by the time he’d be able to make his return.

Pogba last made a competitive appearance in September last year. However, he seems to be keeping busy while his football future is being sorted.

According to French publication Le Parisien, the World Cup winner is set to star in a film titled “4 Zeros”, which will be released in April 2025.

The film is a sequel to a popular French movie “3 Zeros” which came out in 2002 and drew 1.2 million spectators.

Pogba will play the role of a youth football coach and was seen filming in the streets of Paris on Thursday afternoon. “4 Zeros” is about an aspiring footballer from Africa who dreams of becoming a Paris Saint-Germain star while a scout is aiming to unearth the next Kylian Mbappe.

Le Parisien explain that Pogba appeared relaxed, was smiling and looked very comfortable in front of the cameras. A source said, “He amazed everyone with his naturalness and simplicity. He visibly appreciated the experience and said he was ready, why not, to reproduce it further.”

Pogba’s scenes were filmed at the Parc Stadium in Rueil-Malmaison on the outskirts of the city and he filmed in two separate scenes.

It’s understood that the 31-year-old then proceeded to take selfies with children and teenagers who were clearly excited to be in close proximity to him.

The post Jose Mourinho would love the opportunity to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly told those close to him that he would love to manage his former side for a second time.

It feels very much that the end is nigh for Erik ten Hag after another horrendous, embarrassing defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace yesterday.

Even though INEOS are unlikely to sack the manager until after the FA Cup final in three and half weeks’ time, it really does feel that last night could and should have been the breaking point.

In a season full of depressing lows, the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Crystal Palace will take some beating. Porous in defence, vacant in midfield and as dangerous as bubble wrap in the final third, nothing went right for Ten Hag’s men.

The Dutchman has cut an incredibly frustrated figure as of late and he has been visually irked during interviews and press conferences.

A plethora of names have been linked to replace the Dutch coach at the end of the season such as Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

However, the Manchester Evening News have suggested that former coach, Jose Mourinho, would be delighted to take a second bite at the cherry.

The paper reports “Jose Mourinho would love to manage Manchester United again” and “he has told confidants he would ‘walk’ to Manchester to manage United for a second time, having been sacked by the club in December 2018.”

The two-time Champions League winner is a friend of United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe but sadly for ‘the special one’, “the club does not want to reappoint the Portuguese.”

Therefore, “Mourinho is not expecting an approach from his former club.”

The return of the ultra-famous coach would be blockbuster but it shouldn’t be what INEOS have in mind.

He has already experienced a return to Chelsea and despite winning the league, it turned very sour towards the end of his time at the club.

In addition, despite winning the Conference League with Roma in 2022, he is hardly at the peak of his powers and if anything, his stock in the game has decreased substantially since he was fired from the Old Trafford job.

INEOS have a chance to separate themselves from the failings of the last decade and that must start with appointing a manager who not only fully understands the rigours of managing an elite club but who is in possession of a style of play that can compete at the highest level of modern football.

Former Manchester United coach, Kieran McKenna, has continued his meteoric rise by achieving promotion to the Premier League with Ipswich Town.

After achieving what Manchester United could not by beating Coventry City in 90 minutes mid-week, the Tractor Boys were only a point away from securing promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.

A no-nonsense 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town earlier this afternoon sparked pandemonium as McKenna secured back-to-back promotions and his side became the first since Southampton in 2012 to secure consecutive promotions from the third division to the Premier League.

The scale of the job the Northern Irishman has pulled off should not be underestimated.

When he left United in 2021 his reputation was hardly soaring as rumours of the United dressing room not respecting him or his methods were rife.

Seen as a “dry school teacher” and lacking ability to make a personal connection with United’s big names, not many would have held out much hope for his chances of succeeding as a manager.

However, he was given an opportunity when the Portman Road side called on his services in December 2021. McKenna took over the role on the 16th December 2021 and he took the reins of a side who were 11th in League One and had won seven out of 22 league matches.

There wouldn’t be much improvement as Ipswich finished the campaign in the same position but it was the next season which really saw the team take off.

The next campaign saw an increase of 28 points and an incredible 101 goals scored as they gained promotion to the Championship in second place.

However, his work this season has been even more impressive.

After winning 98 points last season, McKenna has gained 96 in this campaign and once again guided his side to a second place finish and automatic promotion to the Premier League.

This is even more of a jaw-dropping achievement when you consider that the Tractor Boys pay the 18th highest wages in the league.

Not that the amount of wages you pay necessarily equates to success, as any United fan can attest to, but there is no logical reason for Ipswich to be competing against much richer teams with bigger individual talents.

The work of the Enniskillen native has not gone unnoticed. He has been linked with moves to copious amounts of Premier League clubs including at his former employees, Manchester United.

He has also been named the Championship manager of the year award due to his ability to go toe-to-toe with the champions Leicester City who have numerous players from their FA Cup winning team of 2021 still playing for them.

McKenna has been described as “arguably the most exciting young manager in England” and after taking the Suffolk-based side all the way back to the big time, it is hard to argue against this logic.

In addition, his side play in a swashbuckling manner, that in true Manchester United style, gaining numerous points from losing positions and scoring a truckload of goals in the process.

In the last two seasons Ipswich have scored 193 league goals. Whilst it is hard to imagine his side being top scorers next season in the top-flight, they are also unlikely to be happy to just shut up shop and eke out 1-0 wins in the Premier League.

His adaptation to the biggest league in the world will be fascinating for United fans to witness and if he can manage to do a stellar job, more and more fans will call for the former coach to get a chance at being the manager who can finally turn around United’s fortunes.

Only time will tell if he will ever he good enough at the top level or have the opportunity to coach United but congratulations are in order for the incredible work the ex-United man has been able to pull off in such a short period of time.

Former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger has spoken out on his turbulent relationship with Jose Mourinho during the pair’s spell together at Manchester United.

The midfielder joined the club in the summer of 2015 originally under the stewardship of Louis van Gaal before the Dutchman was replaced by Mourinho at the end of the season.

Schweinsteiger was then banished from the first team squad for the early part of Mourinho’s tenure but as reported by Four Four Two, the former midfielder insists the pair never had an ugly confrontation.

Far from it in fact with the World Cup winner revealing they were quite cordial. “I must say, I always had a pretty good relationship with Jose Mourinho. When we spoke, it was very respectful. I really liked his character,” he said.

The former Bayern Munich man didn’t feature for United until December of that season and has already opened up to Gary Neville over the lack of an explanation and the treatment meted out to him.

Despite Mourinho being in charge, Schweinsteiger revealed that him being banished was “a decision by the board” while noting that his injury issues from the back end of the previous season also played a part.

“You need to understand: I injured my knee the season before, I said I was going to have my treatment in Manchester, then the same injury happened again and the Euros were coming up, so I asked the club and Louis van Gaal if I could have the treatment in Germany.

“For a player, the most important thing is to be healthy and to come back as soon as possible. That was my goal, so I decided it like that, but it was not a decision against Manchester United,” he explained.

Schweinsteiger revealed that Mourinho eventually apologised to him for the mistreatment and the German was happy to accept it with a handshake.

However, the midfielder says that he would have loved to have played more minutes that season, particularly with the talented players United had in the squad who should have gone on to win more at the club.

“I would’ve liked to have played more, definitely, and with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, because with those two players I think we could have achieved much more,” he said.

Despite the tough times, Schweinsteiger admits he is proud to have represented United and will never forget playing in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

“But I’m grateful to the supporters for the way they welcomed me when I had the chance to play.

“My dream was to play at Old Trafford again and it happened after a while, after training on my own, or with the under-19s or under-17s. Playing at Old Trafford again really meant a lot to me,” he added.

The legendary German continues to show his support to United from afar and will be desperate for Erik ten Hag and his troops to end a disappointing season with a trophy as they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at the end of the month.
