Manchester United Women delivered a dominant performance as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Wembley to secure the team’s first ever major trophy.

Goals from Ella Toone, Rachel Williams and a brace from Lucia Garcia proved to be the difference for the Red Devils in the greatest day in the team’s history since being reformed in 2018.

United coach Marc Skinner was under no illusions about how important getting that first piece of silverware on Sunday afternoon was.

Speaking to the BBC he claimed, “we are obviously not where we want in the league right? But we are history makers for Manchester United. I didn’t need to remind the owners of that, they know. There is a lot of support and love for our team and the growth.”

“We want to compete for titles but you all know how important adding that first piece of silverware is. We’ve got nothing but growth ahead.”

The former Birmingham City boss also discussed the sense of relief he felt when Ella Toone rifled in the opener, rather than elation.

“In all honesty I felt that first half was just frustration because we didn’t score, I thought we offered more of a threat, we controlled most of their threat. As much as I am exhausted now it is a magical feeling. Tooney scored one of those goals at Leicester but it is another thing to do it at Wembley.”

The 41-year-old coach also passed on some advice to his star attacker after the game when he stated, “I told her [Toone] on the podium you have to feel it, remember it because it comes and goes too quick, and that is what she did. Congratulations to her and the team, we are FA Cup winners.”

The manager was then asked about the thorny issue of the crucially important Mary Earps’ contract situation. “That is a decision to be made later, it is not a conversation for now. I’m sure it does help but me and Mary have a great relationship. Of course I would love her to stay. She is an FA Cup winner,” he responded.

Skinner finished by claiming that the team needs a mixture of youth and experience to begin to compete for league titles and that there needed to be a little bit of “reinvention” of the side moving forward.

“I know we can challenge but we need to invest. I am sure we will, INEOS has been a breath of fresh air since they’ve come in, a real invigorating moment. I hope that can help us push forward next season.”

Opening goal scorer Ella Toone also gave her thoughts on what unfolded on a magical afternoon in the London sun: “It feels amazing. We came here last year and saw what it takes to win an FA Cup. We fell short then and we knew this time that we were hungrier than ever to get a result. We put on a great performance today and I am buzzing we managed to get the win.”

Toone then opened up on the importance of scoring just before half time, revealing she had “been practising every day in training, those types of shots from outside the box, the girls will tell you. As soon as I hit it, it felt like one of them that I knew instantly was going in.”

“For us it was a great time to score, just ahead of half time, it is always nice to get a goal then and come out for the second half a goal up.”

Toone has a wonderful record at Wembley as she also famously scored for England in the Euro finals versus Germany in 2022. Speaking on her experiences at the famous old stadium she said, “I don’t know! I wish I could play here every week! It is a great stadium, the home of football and it is a place every young player dreams of playing at.”

United’s women team have one more challenge ahead of them when they welcome second placed Chelsea to Old Trafford in the season finale.

The FA Cup success is a huge success for the club and they will be looking at using the first major trophy as a springboard to challenge for the title and bring Champions League football to Old Trafford for the first time in their history.

Manchester United Women are leading the race to sign North Carolina Courage midfielder Denise O’Sullivan.

The side are coming off the back of a disappointing league season where they will likely finish in fifth place and are currently 17 points off the top of the table.

Nonetheless, tomorrow brings an immense opportunity as the Red Devils take on Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the FA Cup.

The tie provides Marc Skinner’s side the chance to win their first piece of major silverware in the club’s short history, since being reformed in 2018.

However plans for the summer have already started in earnest according to The Daily Mail.

In his pre-match press conference, Skinner alluded to the fact and claimed that “there are things that we’ll learn from this season that I already know the answers to, that we can fix in the summer. I have no doubt about that.”

The paper reports that perhaps the club have already found one solution.

“Manchester United are leading the race to sign Republic of Ireland international Denise O’Sullivan from North Carolina Courage,” The Mail claims.

“The midfielder is out of contract when the National Women’s Soccer League season ends in November and would be available on a free transfer in January.”

“But Mail Sport understands United are expected to make a bid for O’Sullivan this summer.”

The transfer will likely be of huge interest to the experienced midfielder as she is reportedly “a lifelong United fan” and is open to a move.

The 30 year old has won 109 caps for the Republic of Ireland and would add a huge amount of experience to United’s midfield.

She would also add a winning mentality as at the Courage, she has won two NWSL Championships, two Challenge Cups and three NWSL Shields.

Described as “midfield maestro”, she would be an inexpensive shrewd signing as United aim to qualify for the lucrative Champions League next season.

Manchester United Women’s manager Marc Skinner predicts a fascinating encounter between his side and Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup final tomorrow.

Since the reformation of the women’s team in 2018, there has been a meteoric rise but there is still no major trophy to go with the progress. This Sunday provides the chance to right this wrong, especially after losing last year’s final to Chelsea.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the United coach claimed what a big opportunity it is for his players and the club as a whole.

“You’ll have added silverware to Manchester United and that’s successful wherever you are as a club. There are things that we have learnt from this season that we already know the answers to and we can fix over the summer, I have no doubt about that.”

“When you’re at the end of the season, you want to finish it the best way that you can. We’ve got two finals to go, one at Old Trafford and obviously the Wembley one this weekend.”

The former Birmingham coach then took the opportunity to praise his opponents for the match and denied that his side are the favourites for the match, despite being seven points ahead of their opponents in the Women’s Super League table.

“It’s going to be difficult because Tottenham deserve to be in the final and I’m not having the underdog status but if we can add silverware, particularly for our fans, I think that’ll be hugely important going forward.”

“Tottenham have players that have experienced finals before, so you know those players won’t be overawed.”

When discussing what style his side will implement against Spurs, he claimed it would be different from the more physical approach adopted in the semi-final against Chelsea.

“Style is what the game will need. There will be times in a final where if you are losing, you’ll have to throw caution to the wind, if you’re winning, you may have to be more reserved. I think this game will have a bit of everything for both teams.”

The United coach then took the opportunity to mention how this season has shown what an exciting time it is in the women’s game in England.

“I think this season in general, forget the FA Cup for a second, I think in general the competition, the competitiveness of the league has been far more and what it kind of reminds you of is that you can’t stand still and you must keep progressing, keep evolving because if you don’t, you can get left behind.”

“For us, I think the investment in the league, the, the excitement of what’s to come, I only think it’s going to get better. And I think women’s football is an exciting place to take that forward.”

Skinner then lavished praise on one of his stars, Nikita Parris. There was a recent report that suggested she had turned a lucrative move to the United States last month, prioritising her team’s bid to win the FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Commenting on the forward’s contribution to United he claimed, “what I can promise you is that Nikita has always and always will remain a focused, fantastic player. Look at her numbers this year. Look how she’s played. Look at the role model she is.”

“You can tell she’s 100 per cent committed to what’s going on at Manchester United, and from my perspective, that is something that will come every single day. Having players like Nikita in our team is hugely important for our success going forward. She’s a fantastic player for Manchester United.”

Finally, the manager was able to deliver some positive news heading into tomorrow’s massive encounter. “As far as we’re aware as we sit right now, everybody – barring the longer-term injuries – is available so that is positive news. Everybody’s available for the squad and that’s nice going into a final.”

Skinner and United will be hoping they can get the monkey off their back and cap a disappointing season in the finest way possible by bringing the famous trophy back to Manchester.

Manchester United star Nikita Parris reportedly turned down a big-money move to the United States and NWSL last month in favour of potentially winning the FA Cup.

United are set to come up against Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s FA Cup final on Sunday.

Marc Skinner’s side will be hoping for better fortunes this time around having been the losing team last year against Chelsea.

However, on this occasion, United are heading into the clash as firm favourites and according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Parris snubbed a huge payday to ensure the Red Devils got over the line.

Ornstein reveals, “Manchester United striker Nikita Parris turned down a lucrative move to the United States last month, prioritising her team’s bid to win the FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.”

“Despite her contract expiring this summer, Parris was subject to a previously unreported pursuit by National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side North Carolina Courage.”

“An agreement had been reached between the clubs before the April 19 transfer deadline in what would have marked a record women’s sale for United, while the 30-year-old forward stood to earn £1million over a three-year deal.”

The Athletic note that all that was left was for the paperwork to be signed for Parris to then be officially considered a North Carolina Courage player.

Since Courage’s season was already underway, they wanted Parris to join them immediately.

However, the United striker made it clear she did not wish to leave until after the FA Cup final at Wembley is done.

On their part, Courage could not assure Parris they’d wait for her and as such, the transfer collapsed. It remains to be seen whether Courage reignite their interest in the 30-year-old when the NWSL transfer window reopens on August 1.

Ornstein adds that United must now decide whether or not they wish to extend Parris’ current terms. The club retain an option to extend her deal by an additional 12 months.

Parris has plundered an impressive 16 goals in 28 appearances this season.

Manchester United and England star Mary Earps was honoured by Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday as she received an MBE for her services to football.

Earps was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) amidst a very successful career both for club and country.

She played a pivotal role for England as they won the European Championship on home soil in 2022. Earps was also part of the Lionesses’ run to the World Cup final last summer. Unfortunately, they fell short at the final hurdle as they were beaten by Spain.

Earps has been part of United’s ranks since 2019 but her future is uncertain with her contract expiring this summer.

Arsenal have been strongly linked to the Red Devils star.

The 31-year-old has twice been named the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper in 2022 and most recently in 2023. She also claimed the Golden Glove at the World Cup last summer.

She will have the opportunity to win her first piece of silverware with United this Sunday when Marc Skinner’s side take on Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the FA Cup.

The shot-stopper spoke to PA (via club media) about her role in the women’s game and said, “I think there’s still a lot of hard work to do. I think that’s what we’re focused on, it’s the absolute recognition of how far we’ve come and that gratitude.”

“Standing on the shoulders of the people who’ve worked before us and hopefully the future generations can stand on our shoulders as well.”

She added, “It’s continuously everybody involved in the game just continuing to try and push it in the right direction… long may it continue.”

Earps joins Marcus Rashford and Jonny Evans in a long line of United players to receive royal recognition.

Rashford was given his MBE in 2021 while Evans achieved the feat in 2023.

Marc Skinner lamented his side’s inability to take their chances as Manchester United Women lost 1-0 to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

A solitary goal by Jenna Clark was enough to allow the Merseysiders to leapfrog United into fourth place in the Women’s Super League.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the game the Red Devils’ coach stated, “I think we should be two nil up before they, they have a chance to go 2-1 it would have been at the time and one nil up at that stage, and we have another chance to make it three. And these are chances that fall in the penalty area that we should score.”

“We fell a little short today and as I say, I don’t think that it’s something that needs to be over-analysed, it’s a momentary thing and something we will fix going into the next two games.”

Skinner also bemoaned his team’s concentration for the vital corner that resulted in Liverpool’s winner late in first-half stoppage time.

“I think that’s key and switching off from one set piece. It wasn’t structural, it was an individual moment where we switched off.”

The Englishman then launched an attack on the pitch calling it “anti-football.”

“The pitch, in a way it was a bit of an anti-football game. Both teams were knocking it on, playing long and it’s not a possession-based football. We lost sight of that today.”

Skinner then claimed that it is always his side’s goal to dominate possession, to play and rotate the ball but they found that hard on today’s pitch that he described as a “tight, compact pitch where spaces are behind and not in front.”

The former Birmingham City coach was quick to try and turn the negative of defeat into a positive for his side’s chances in the mouth-watering FA Cup final tie next weekend and claimed that perhaps a poor result today will serve his side well for the showpiece event.

“Sometimes it’s good to take a hit before a really big game to focus ourselves. To really get our energy and to really get after Tottenham in the final.”

United centre back, Maya Le Tissier, echoed her coach’s sentiments by criticising her team’s inability to react well in both boxes.

“Whoever is best in both boxes usually wins the game and that wasn’t us today.”

“Of course we had maybe three chances in the first half and a few in the second but set pieces win you games and trophies and we just switched off for a second.”

Le Tissier shared her manager’s analysis of the game that United struggled to play their usual type of football and this inevitably affected the result.

“Liverpool are a difficult team to play against, especially away from home. A small pitch, tight, scrappy, you can only really play off seconds and sometimes we can’t play the pretty football we want to play.”

The young defender’s attention quickly turned to next weekend’s big event and she claimed, “our focus is on next weekend. It’s massive for us and we want to finish the season as well as we can. Just to reward the fans for sticking with us.”

All eyes will now turn to Sunday 12th of May as United head to Wembley stadium aiming to win their first piece of silverware in the women’s game.

The post Ella Toone voted Manchester United Women’s Player of the Month for April appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Manchester United women have revealed their Player of the Month for April, with Ella Toone scooping the honour for the third time this season.

As confirmed by the club’s official website, Toone pipped goalkeeper Mary Earps to the award by just three percent of the votes.

Earps’ 41% wasn’t enough to topple Toone, who has enjoyed a trio of excellent performances across the month. Maya Le Tissier finished third in the running with 15% of the votes.

It’s Toone’s fifth triumph overall after being awarded the prize back-to-back in December 2023 and January 2024.

The attacking midfielder scored her 52nd goal for the club against Leicester last weekend, a crucial late strike that proved to be the match winner on the day.

Toone’s clever turn and stunning 25 yard hit fizzed into Janina Leitzig’s top corner and secured the club’s Goal of the Month award in the process.

The strike is also up for the Goal of the Month award in the Women’s Super League, which could lead to further recognition for Ella.

It’s been a special period for United’s number 7 who became the first player to reach the 50 goal mark for the Women’s team when she claimed a brace on the final day of March against Everton.

Furthermore, Toone’s fine cross that allowed Rachel Williams to nod home the killer second in the famous FA Cup semi-final win against Chelsea helped United secure their place in second successive finals in the competition.

United will start as favourites in the showpiece occasion on May 12 against Tottenham, and Toone will no doubt have a key role to play should Mark Skinner’s men lift the trophy for the first time.

Despite a disappointing league campaign overall for the Women’s team, Toone has remained an almost ever-present throughout the season and continues to give her all for the cause.

The Cup final is surrounded by two tasty looking remaining fixtures in the WSL, against Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively.

Manchester United Women pulled off a late win to defeat a difficult Leicester City side 1-0.

The Red Devils controlled most of the match but did not find a breakthrough until the 83rd minute when Ella Toone came off the bench to score a world-class winner. As her manager, Marc Skinner, commented at the end of the match, “it was a goal worthy of winning any game”.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Toone could hardly contain her delight after scoring her ninth WSL goal of the season. As relayed by the club’s official website, the midfielder claimed, “yeah, it meant a lot. The girls dug deep and I knew my job was to come on and to change the game and to try and get the girls a goal and that’s what I did”.

When discussing the goal she humbly declared it “was a decent finish” before joking off-camera that “Mary (Earps) wouldn’t have saved it either”.

The 24 year old was also asked if she knew it was in from the moment she hit it. She replied, “yeah, sometimes when you strike a ball and you know when you’ve hit it clean, you know it’s going in. To be fair, when I’d seen the keeper got dead close to it and then, yeah when it hit the back of the net, luckily, I was buzzing with it.”

Skinner had asked before the game that his side showed ruthlessness in both boxes and while this was lacking in the attacking department, the defence stayed solid and kept a vital clean sheet against a dangerous Leicester counter-attack.

Full back Hannah Blundell, spoke on the team’s togetherness and the importance of having substitutes that can make a difference in games.

Commenting on Toone’s strike she said, “incredible, I mean, to be fair the subs that came on were fantastic. Tooney’s goal, I’m honestly speechless. Incredible from her but that’s Tooney for you. She can produce those moments and thankfully she did today and got us the win.”

Elaborating further on the side’s depth she claimed, “the good thing about this team as well is that when players aren’t starting, they know they can come on and make a difference. They’ve got a positive mentality.”

Blundell went on to praise the defence for keeping a clean sheet in the face of a strong Leicester onslaught in the final ten minutes of play.

“When you keep a team like Leicester in it, they’re always going to have chances. Thankfully we have a keeper like Mary in goal and the back four. They were fantastic today and I think we have been all season.”

“You have got to stay switched on through the 113 minutes we had today and if you aren’t getting the goals, then you need to keep a clean sheet at the back.”

United’s women have an exciting final three games of the season remaining, where they take on Liverpool next Sunday and Chelsea in three weeks time. Sandwiched in between is also the small matter of the FA Cup final against Tottenham, where they will hope to go one better than last season and lift the famous trophy at Wembley.

Manchester United women’s Irish centre back, Aoife Mannion, has lavished praise on goalkeeper Mary Earps.

The United shot-stopper has had a meteoric rise over the last few seasons with her standing across world football skyrocketing.

Earps was a crucial part of England’s Euros win in 2022 and was also magnificent in her national team’s run to the final of the World Cup, saving a penalty in the final.

She has also been crowned the best keeper in world football for two consecutive years and won the BBC sports personality of the year award.

The 31 year old has carried her fine form into club football, as she put in an outstanding performance for the Red Devils when she faced a barrage of shots in the club’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the recent FA Cup semi-final.

Speaking to talkSport, her teammate Mannion has claimed, “What Mary is like on the pitch is exactly what she’s like in training.”

The defender was also full of praise for the attitude she brings to matchdays.

“She’s full throttle, incredibly authentic and passionate as a character and very inspiring to be around on the pitch.”

The defender once again praised Earps’ acts of heroism on the pitch and spoke of one particular save she made in the vital semi-final victory over Chelsea a couple of weeks ago.

“I was saying to her in the gym actually that there was one particular save that she made [vs Chelsea] where it almost looked like she had to hyper extend or dislocate her shoulder to stop the ball from going in the net and I’m surprised there’s not been any videos or memes [because] basically when she did that, I just put my hands to my face and gasped.

“For that moment, I was like a fan watching it and it’s very rare in football in a game as a player where you have a sense of something that’s so incredible.”

Referencing how crucial Earps is for the team she commented, “She’s an incredible goalkeeper and sometimes, little moments like that in games can remind everyone just how lucky we are to have her and how lucky I am personally to play alongside her.”

“Some of those saves were just enormous and can’t be understated how incredible and skilful they are. I’m really pleased she was in the net for us because it could have been a very different outcome if she wasn’t.”

United’s women aim to finish the season strongly as they take on Leicester City on Sunday and still have two mouth-watering fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea in the Women’s Super League.

However, Earps will be no doubt be champing at the bit to help United win their first piece of silverware when they take on Tottenham in the FA Cup final on the 12th of May.

There is little doubt that the England international will once again be of vital importance if United go on to win the trophy.

Manchester United Women’s manager, Marc Skinner, called on his team to show greater ruthlessness in front of goal than they have currently been showing as of late.

After the glory of making it into the FA Cup final, holding on to beat Chelsea, the Red Devils followed up the result with a disappointing 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in their next league fixture.

United will take on Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, aiming to fend off Liverpool to keep their fourth place in the Women’s Super League standings.

Skinner opened up his pre-match press conference by lavishing praise on new technical director Jason Wilcox and spoke of his excitement at working closely with the former Blackburn winger.

When asked his views on Wilcox potentially introducing an overarching style that both the men’s and women’s team would follow he stated, “Yeah, I think any team has an identity and I think you can talk about it. Jason’s had fantastic success at his previous clubs, including style of play and from our perspective, we welcome anyone who has fantastic input. It can only be a positive thing.”

“As a Manchester United team, an attacking style of play is really important to our fans”.

The coach was then asked about how he would continue to blood youngsters into his first-team squad after the success of the men’s side, where Ethan Wheatley became the 250th academy graduate to make a debut for the first team.

He spoke of the importance of training but also believed the success of the youth teams this season will only benefit their development.

“You can’t replicate the pressure in a game (in training). The success of the under-21s and 16s gives them exposure to pressure early.

“Pre-season will be key. We’ll see a lot of them and make a plan for each individual”.

Skinner went on to discuss this weekend’s opponent and spoke in glowing terms of the Foxes’ performance level in this campaign.

“Maybe their results have not been what they wanted but their performances have been absolutely fine. Every time I watch them, they are creating chances. Leicester are a very good team in my opinion. We look forward to playing them.”

However, the United coach believes that winning the match will be down to one factor and that is putting away their chances.

“We need to dictate but I want us to be more ruthless in both boxes. We have to get back to that. We’ve created against Tottenham, lots and lots of chances to win the game. We have to show our ruthless side.”

The 41-year-old was then asked to provide some team news and he commented that the side will largely be unchanged but Jayde Riviere was “back training individually” and that she will hopefully make a return next week.

Skinner was then asked to share his thoughts on defender Maya Le Tissier signing a new deal and he was understandably delighted.

“I think she’s going to be a cultural architect for what we want to build at Manchester United. That’s the reason she has signed again.”

Speaking on her performance against Spurs, where she scored a last-minute equaliser, he claimed, “I really enjoyed her performance barring a couple of moments. I think she really grew into the game. She led with her body language and voice. I want her to help me build this winning team that we want to see at Manchester United.”

Finally, the former Birmingham City coach commented on how his team must concentrate on winning every game, despite their chances of qualifying for the top three having already been extinguished.

“We have to focus on the here and now. There’s a great chance for us because I want my players to see every opportunity not just the one coming down the line. That shows our mentality, we want to win every game.”

With crucial ties against Leicester, Liverpool and Chelsea in the league and a showpiece FA Cup final versus Tottenham on the 12th May, there is still much to look forward to this season for United’s Women.
