Following the final match day of the academy league season, it is a heartfelt time around Carrington as some academy players say their goodbyes.

But as a touch of class, Manchester United have gifted the departing players a framed shirt to always remember their time at the club.

Five members of United’s u16s are amongst those departing this summer, all of whom have already secured deals with new clubs.

Amongst those departing is Siem Eyob-Abraha, an Eritrean forward who also received the parting gift of an u18s debut yesterday in a 3-1 win, prior to being released.

Eyob-Abraha will now join Sheffield United, a club he has recently spent time trialing with.

Another pacy forward in Majid Balogun is among the released and will join West Ham United, having been followed by a number of clubs which included a trial with Leeds United earlier in the season.

With two forwards leaving, it is likely United will look to the market to bring in a new forward to join the u18s next season and one name already mentioned is England u16s international Zyan Blake of Nottingham Forest.

Another recognisable name amongst the released is Freddie Freedman, the son of Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman, who himself has been linked in recent months with a move to join the United back room staff.

The father and son duo won’t be joining up though as young Freddie makes the move to Everton, which interestingly means he will have played for the two biggest rivals of Liverpool, a club he has a close connection with being the grandson of the late Liverpool and England legend Ray Clemence.

The final two to depart are Rory Leech, who will join Hull City and Nathaniel Mapengu, who stays in the Manchester area with Stockport County.

It is always a difficult time when departing a top club like Manchester United having often spent many formative years at the club. The club can take pride in the fact that all of those departing players have been helped in securing new clubs and that they will always be welcome back at Carrington with the newly launched alumni programme.

The released players also gives an indication of who is amongst next year’s U18 intake, with the remaining below u16s expected to make the step up: Dan Armer, James Bailey, Godwill Kukonki, Fred Heath, Albert Mills, Dante Plunkett, Cameron Byrne-Hughes, Bendito Mantato, Amir Ibragimov, Jim Thwaites.

]]>

Manchester United u21s season has ended early after being eliminated from the Premier League 2 play-offs in the first round.

United took on Arsenal in the first round where they were defeated 6-2.

Travis Binnion’s side finished 12th in the regular season, which was enough to qualify for next season’s Premier League International Cup and the post-season play-offs, but the latter have come to a disappointing quick end.

Completing the season with 8 wins, 5 draws, and 7 losses, it was an up and down year for the young reds.

Inconsistent results came at the hand of an inconsistent squad, with an incredible 46 different players featuring across the season.

A mishmash of options, the squad included at times youngsters who were training with the first team, u18s players moving up and down between levels, those coming back from unsuccessful loans and even some u16s had run outs in the latter stages of the season.

As a result, no run of form could be found at any point during the season, with United failing to win more than two matches in a row at any point, but on the other hand also never losing more than twice in a row.

United’s top two goal scorers in the season, Shola Shoretire and Joe Hugill, featured very little in the second half of the campaign due to injury and going on loan, respectively. This also left the team light in attacking threat.

Sonny Aljofree was the side’s most active player during the season, playing 1,973 minutes, one of only five players to rack up over 1,000 minutes at u21s level this season.

A somewhat concerning fact, though, is that Aljofree was actually loaned out to Altrincham in the National League in January but didn’t feature a single time for the Greater Manchester club.

The scenario was a common theme amongst the group. Sam Murray and Maxi Oyedele were also loaned out in January but neither made the grade and ended up back at United quickly for the rest of the season.

Charlie McNeill was another who spent the first half of the season on a disappointing loan spell with Stevenage where he struggled to get on the pitch before returning to United in January.

The list of development mishaps could clearly signify the club’s general lack of plan for the u21s squad.

A constant changing of lineups for a variety of reasons, a series of bad loan choices, and a preference for the well-performing u18s has left a situational malaise with seemingly no solution.

Not only were the performances often turgid and disjointed on the pitch, which felt like no one wanted to be there, but roughly half of the u21s matches were not televised and many were played at training grounds with no spectators, leaving the season as not much more than a glorified training session.

As a result, despite all of the circumstances, the season can only be summed up as rather disappointing for United’s u21s, on and off the pitch.

The post Manchester United could be about to lose Shola Shoretire on a free this summer appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

Manchester United’s famed academy has provided rare glimmers of hope in what has been a disappointing campaign for the senior team.

Both Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have enjoyed breakthrough campaigns while four other starlets have gone on to make their first-team debut this season.

Dan Gore, Willy Kambwala, Omari Forson and most recently Ethan Wheatley all won their first senior cap as the academy reached the prized number of 250 academy graduates who have gone on to represent the senior team.

More could be on the way with Harry Amass, Habeeb Ogunneye and Jack Kingdon all making it to matchday squads this season while Shea Lacey missed out after suffering a cruel season-ending injury at the worst time.

Academy’s rising status

While the academy and the graduates are rightly being celebrated, plenty of fans might have forgotten about Shola Shoretire, who had broken through under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 20-year-old got his big break against Newcastle United back in February 2021 when he was only 17 years 19 days, making him the seventh-youngest club debutant.

The young Englishman then proceeded to break the long-standing record of Norman Whiteside when he made his European debut against Real Sociedad in the Europa League at the age of 17 years and 23 days, surpassing the previous record by 108 days.

He was expected to become a bonafide first team member under Erik ten Hag but that never materialised as injuries started floundering his progress.

Shoretire made it to the matchday squad in all competitions last term but this term, he was only on the bench for the game against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

For the U21s, he has nine goals and four assists in 12 games and has even captained them but has not managed to make the squad since January, probably due to a minor injury as well as the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.

The England U19 international’s current deal expires in June and United’s contract offer remains on the table as relayed by The Peoples Person.

Shoretire’s exit

The club’s initial plan was to agree a new deal so as to protect his value and send Shoretire out on loan with plenty of EFL and foreign clubs interested including Turkish giants Galatasaray.

United had mulled over a sale as well but as The Manchester Evening News have now reported, the Newcastle-born star could be set to leave the club on a free.

“Manchester United remain hopeful youngster Shola Shoretire will sign a new contract with the club.

“Shoretire, 20, is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and it looks increasingly likely the curtains could be brought down on his time spent in Manchester.”

The versatile star has outgrown reserve football and needs regular minutes. With so many younger academy graduates already impressing the Dutch boss, a parting of ways might be the best way for Shoretire to get his career back on track.

]]>

Manchester United are returning to the illustrious SuperCupNI this summer and their group stage opponents have now been revealed.

United will take on County Fermanagh, Skouted FC, and Intercontinental FA in their group.

It will be a team of u16s taking part in the red of United this year after the club took part in the u18s section last summer.

But the removal of the u18s section in this year’s edition sees United return to challenge at the u16s level, having won the competition the last time they competed in 2022.

The victorious United squad in 2022 included a number of this year’s league and cup double winning u18s, including James Scanlon, Jayce Fitzgerald, and captain Finley McAllister.

Formerly known as the Milk Cup, the tournament will see United take on a variety of different teams from different countries and has been utilised by the club as a pre-season tournament for the academy since its inception in the 1980s.

Amongst their opponents, an interesting name jumps out in that of Skouted FC, a new academy founded in 2019 by former Manchester United academy graduate Febian Brandy.

The project involves a football development centre for youth players as well as a digital football app that allows footballers to upload their video footage in order to get scouted by professional football clubs.

Brandy says the concept behind the idea is “to be the link between grassroots and professional football, trying to bring them all together.”

United’s other opponents include a Northern Ireland county select side from Fermanagh, who always offer a tough physical battle, and Intercontinental FA from New England, USA who compete in MLS Next, an emerging hotbed of talent that United have experienced first hand at the Generation Adidas Cup.

The other groups also contain a fascinating mix of opponents that United could compete against in the knockout stages including a Japanese high school, a Barcelona satellite academy from Dubai, Rangers, and Toluca CF from Liga MX.

The tournament will kick off on July 21st and will likely be available to stream as it has in the past, although it has not yet been confirmed for this year.

A launchpad for many United stars in the past such as David Beckham, Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo, the tournament is always a great chance for fans to get their first glimpse of United’s next academy star.

Manchester United’s senior team may have struggled but the age group teams have been on fire with the famed United academy churning out one top talent after the other.

The United U18s clinched the U18 Premier League North title while losing only twice all season while they also clinched the Premier League Cup for the first time. The U21s have also qualified for the play-offs, where they will face off against Arsenal.

The academy has been the source of the only sliver of hope this season from a first team perspective as most high-profile names have struggled this season.

Erik ten Hag has benefited from the breakthroughs of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo while the rampaging injury crisis has seen him hand out debuts to the likes of Dan Gore, Willy Kambwala, Omari Forson and most recently, Ethan Wheatley.

Lacey’s season done

The forward became the 250th academy graduate to make his debut for the first team, a remarkable record and testament to the hard work done behind the scenes.

As relayed by The Peoples Person, 17-year-old Shea Lacey was next in line for a possible debut before the season concluded. But that has to wait now.

The winger revealed on social media that he has once again suffered an injury setback and is set to be out for the remainder of the season.

“Gutted to have picked up another injury to finish my season early looking forward to next season,” the Liverpudlian wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Fans eager to see him make his debut

Lacey, who recently signed his first professional deal with the club, was out for over five months due to a torn thigh muscle which restricted him to only 10 appearances this season.

Since regaining fitness, he has been a constant presence in first team training sessions where he has impressed the Dutch manager.

Following this latest setback, the club should try and look after the super talented wonderkid even more to ensure fewer disruptions moving forward.

Hopefully, the England U17 international can regain fitness before pre-season commences as fans are desperate to see him feature for the first team and they believe they have their “very own Lionel Messi“.

Manchester United had to come back from a goal down on two separate occasions before finally seeing off Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The team needed to put on a strong show against the Blades after their capitulation on Sunday but it was the visitors who drew first blood after a careless mistake from Andre Onana.

Harry Maguire equalised before half-time but the second half once again saw Chris Wilder’s side re-take the lead through Ben Brereton Diaz.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes then took matters into his own hands, scoring from the spot to restore parity before unleashing a left-footed piledriver to hand the Red Devils the lead.

The Portuguese was not done yet as he then registered an assist for the team’s fourth netted by Rasmus Hojlund, who also ended his six-game drought.

United’s new approach

Erik ten Hag’s side clinched all three points and went up to sixth in the table and it was interesting to see the team adopt a more possession-based approach instead of the usual transition-heavy style.

Whether the change was necessitated due to Jason Wilcox’s instructions is still not clear. How the team approaches the upcoming tests will shed further light on whether this approach will be the blueprint moving forward.

The other big highlight from the game was the emergence of academy sensation Ethan Wheatley from the bench in the 90th minute. The 18-year-old became the 250th academy star to debut for the first team, a remarkable stat and testimony to the work put in behind the scenes at Carrington.

The centre-forward has 11 goals and four assists for United’s age group teams this season including a hat-trick against the Liverpool U18s earlier this month. The United U18s have run rampant all season, clinching a league and cup double.

He has been a part of the matchday squad for the games against Coventry City in the FA Cup and Bournemouth in the league and finally got a chance against the Blades.

With Anthony Martial set to leave, and with Hojlund still not fully adapted, Wheatley has the chance to try and rack up a few more caps and hopefully score before the season concludes.

With United set to go all out for a striker in the summer, the England U17 international might find chances hard to come by next season and Givemesport have already revealed that plenty of EFL clubs are interested in a potential loan.

Wheatley’s future

Academy full-back Harry Amass has also been on the first team bench a lot recently is also subject of loan interest as is Omari Forson, whose contract ends in the summer and there is plenty of uncertainty surrounding his future.

“Ethan Wheatley’s goal exploits for the Under 18 side has made him a major loan target for Championship and League One clubs next season.

“And the striker isn’t the only United player being eyed for a loan opportunity. Left-back Harry Amass and midfielder Omari Forson are both interesting Championship sides.”

More academy debutants could be on the way as the likes of Jack Fletcher, Habeeb Ogunneye, and Shea Lacey are all champing at the bit.

Whatever happens next summer, Wheatley should be proud of his rise but he needs to keep focussing on improving as the hard work has only just started.

Manchester United managed to scrape past Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend to make it back-to-back FA Cup finals under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag.

However, relinquishing a three-goal lead against a team from the Championship and eventually requiring penalties to make the summit clash was frowned upon by many, much to the disgust of the Dutchman.

But whatever the manager says will not change the fact that the current campaign has been a major disappointment with the Red Devils crashing out of Europe at the first time of asking while being on course to record their worst-ever finish in the history of the Premier League.

The only silver lining this season has been the emergence of academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo with both looking like superstars-in-the-making.

The Academy has come up with all the answers

The Argentine has notched nine goals and four assists this season, and is the third-highest goalscorer in the squad at the age of 19.

As for the Englishman, he has netted thrice, all three of them being memorable strikes while playing with a level of maturity in midfield not seen from someone so young. He is on course to play for the Three Lions in the upcoming European Championships.

The famed United academy has come up with answers for the manager when many established names have failed with Willy Kambwala stepping up in defence due to the injury crisis prevalent at the club while the likes of Omari Forson, and Dan Gore both made their first-team debuts this term.

More could be on the way if The Sun are to be believed. Shea Lacey, considered among the brightest talents to emerge from Carrington, could be about to earn a first team debut before the season concludes.

Dubbed as “United’s very own Lionel Messi“, the versatile winger recently signed his first professional contract with the club and more surprises are on its way.

The United matchday bench has been made up of academy youngsters like Harry Amass, Habeeb Ogunneye and debut number 250 is on the horizon.

Lacey’s first-team debut on the cards

“Top kid Shea Lacey is set to get a game at Manchester United by the end of the season. Winger Lacey has been training with the first team after an injury caused by a growth spurt and is pencilled in for a debut in the run-in,” the report stated.

The 17-year-old has made 10 appearances this season for the U18s and U19s combined, scoring twice and providing four assists as the United U18s have run rampant, clinching a league and cup double.

He is yet to make a matchday squad but has been training consistently with the first team. Games against bottom dwellers Sheffield United and Burnley are up next and ideally, those would have presented the best chances of a debut.

But following their capitulation against Coventry City on Sunday, United can ill-afford to take anything for granted and need to win all three points while also performing to an acceptable level.

]]>

Manchester United have lifted the u18s Premier League Cup for the first time after a 2-1 victory over rivals Manchester City.

Founded in 2013, the competition was initially set up just at u21s level as a counterpart to the u18s FA Youth Cup. But, in 2017 the Premier League Cup was added to the u18s and u16s (later changed to u17s) age groups.

Before Adam Lawrence’s sides victory, United had failed to make it to the final of the competition in any of the three age groups, let alone go on to lift the trophy.

United’s previous best result in the u18s competition was a semi-finals loss to Manchester City in the 2018/19 season.

The club’s current u18s are the strongest group seen in a long time though, as they lift the cup and league double having also won the Premier League North – a feat achieved for the first time in six years.

Lifted by captain Finley McAllister, the Salford native is a boyhood United supporter who can regularly be found attending first-team matches home and away, and his hard work in last night’s cup win left him on the ground after the final whistle as he looked to fight off cramping muscles.

Ethan Wheatley’s first half brace ultimately secured the 2-1 win over Manchester City in what was a resilient 90 minutes of football, as United fought to the dying seconds to claim the trophy.

The striker, who was taken off at the half-time break in order to be involved with Erik ten Hag’s first team against Sheffield United on Wednesday night, has found a comfortable home in the Premier League Cup this season, scoring nine goals in six matches in the competition.

In addition to his double in the final, Wheatley also scored two in the semi-finals win over Crystal Palace. With 20 goals to his name on the season, it is no surprise his recent performances have caught the eyes of Ten Hag and seen him named to the bench for the first team.

But Wheatley wasn’t the only one to impress as United defeated Reading, Southampton, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, and Manchester City en route to lifting the trophy, with the entire squad playing a part.

Normally not having a chance to face the southern clubs due to the split in the u18s league, Adam Lawrence was happy with the club getting to experience new opponents on their run to the finals.

Lawrence stated “it’s given us a different taste and a different flavour for the boys to be playing against teams across the country.”

With development always at the forefront of the coaching staff’s minds, Lawrence added that, “I think in development, when you get to these stages you realise that you need that level of competition and you need those sort of tests to see where you’re at as part of your journey. And as part of your development as a player and as a team as well.”

A level of competition which has pushed United to the limits – quite literally as Elyh Harrison was forced to make a cup-winning save late into injury time – but has ultimately been conquered by the outstanding group of players.

With a number of the players who played a key role in winning the u18s double already working their way into Ten Hag’s matchday squads, it is only a matter of time before fans see them take the next step in their development towards make their first-team debuts.

Now equipped with the experience of winning trophies, Carrington’s special class of 2024 will be looking to bring their winning mentality back to the senior level at Old Trafford.

Manchester United u18s have been crowned league champions of the Premier League North today after a 1-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The title marks the first time United have won the league since the 2017/18 season.

In a season of real dominance, Adam Lawrence’s side have lost only once, with the defeat coming at the hands of city rivals Manchester City, who sit 16 points behind in second place.

After 22 matches, United have 19 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss with 74 goals scored and only 24 conceded.

As well as winning the u18s Premier League North title for the first time in six years, it has been a record breaking season the the club at u18s level.

Kicking off the season with a 14 match winning streak that stretched all the way until February, it is the first time United has ever done so at u18s level according to Manchester United youth historian Tony Park.

The previous record was a 10 match winning streak to open the season which was done by the infamous u18s side of the 1992/93 season.

By winning the league in the North division, United will now taken on the winners of the Premier League South to crown the overall champion of England, a title United have yet to claim since the creation of the Professional Development League in 2012.

As of now, United’s opponents look set to be Chelsea which sets up a rematch of the 2017/18 finals where Chelsea came out 0-3 winners.

Interestingly, on that occasion in 2018, Manchester United’s u18s manager at the time was Kieran McKenna, who went onto coach in the first team under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before recently being named manager of the season in the Championship this season with Ipswich Town.

Looking to reverse the result this time, the timing works out well for United as a number of key players return from recent injuries, including Shea Lacey and Jack Fletcher.

But even in their absence, United’s extreme depth at u18s level has proven strong enough to continue to pick up convincing results even with heavily rotated sides.

Not relying on individuals, with 74 goals in the league, United’s top goal scorer is Gabriele Biancheri with 10, while Ethan Wheatley and James Scanlon follow closely behind with 8 goals each.

Such is the impressive depth of the squad, remarkably after 22 matches there have been 21 different goalscorers for Lawrence’s side.

It is hard to single out individual players but a special mention should be made of the group’s captain, a local boy in Finley McAllister, who is often seen in the crowd home and away for first team matches. He will no doubt have told his teammates the importance of silverware at a club like United.

Academy director, Nick Cox, has also congratulated the group saying “I am extremely proud of what Adam Lawrence, the staff and the players have been able to achieve this season.”

“The players have been stretched, with exposure to numerous competitions and age-group games, whilst also supporting the first-team squad. They have consistently risen to each challenge that we have designed for them and accomplished something really special together.”

The overall Premier League title is not the only one United’s u18s can claim for the first time ever, as they also have the Premier League Cup final coming up next week against Manchester City.

Manchester United’s injury crisis has forced Erik ten Hag to take gamble on academy talents — a move that has yielded mixed results so far.

Injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans have opened doors for Willy Kambwala to accumulate some vital first-team minutes under his belt in recent weeks.

The French centre-back made headlines with his solid performance against Liverpool, but at Bournemouth, he attracted the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, failing to keep up with Dominic Solanke all afternoon.

Fortunately for the Man United academy product, Ten Hag has shown plenty of patience with young players and should continue to hand him more chances moving forward.

In fact, the former Ajax boss was ready to open first-team doors for another academy defender last month.

According to The Sun, Ten Hag would have liked to involve Sonny Aljofree in some capacity against Liverpool in the FA Cup clash.

However, the home-grown defender, who captains United’s Under-21s in Premier League 2, missed out on a fantastic opportunity due to a “little-known” loan ruling.

The Plymouth-born defender has been on a joint registration deal with National League outfit Altrincham since February 1.

Accordingly, the joint loan system has made Aljofree ineligible for the United first team for the ongoing campaign.

Aljofree — son of former United youth player Hasney – has made 16 appearances in PL 2 and has impressed with his defensive acumen.

Considering the trend under the Dutch coach, if the 19-year-old maintains his form he should bag a spot in the senior squad soon.

Apart from Kambwala and Aljofree, Habeeb Ogunneye and Harry Amass have also attracted the attention of Ten Hag’s backroom staff with their defensive showings for United’s youth sides.

Both Ogunneye (right-back) and Amass (left-back) were named on the first-team bench against Liverpool in the Premier League earlier this month.
